City Walks And Tactile Experiences, Mădălina Diaconu
City Walks And Tactile Experiences, Mădălina Diaconu
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This paper is an attempt to develop categories of the pedestrian’s tactile and kinaesthetic experience of the city. The beginning emphasizes the haptic qualities of surfaces and textures, which can be “palpated” visually or experienced by walking. Also the lived city is three-dimensional; its corporeal depth is discussed here in relation to the invisible sewers, protuberant profiles, and the formal diversity of roofscapes. A central role is ascribed in the present analysis to the formal similarities between the representation of the city by walking through it and the representation of the tactile form of objects. Additional aspects of the “tactile” …

Current And Emerging Transportation Technology: Final Nails In The Coffin Of The Dying Right Of Privacy?, James D. Phillips, Katharine E. Kohm
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Transportation networks constitute “the circulatory system of our economy.” The distinct modes that constitute the American transportation system—air, rail, transit, highways, and waterways—impact the entire range of our daily activities. Just as the human body depends on its circulatory system for life and well being, the United States’ vitality would grind to a halting stop without a vibrant transportation system.
Mixed-Mode Control Interfaces Of Mobile Robot Teams, Erik Karulf
Mixed-Mode Control Interfaces Of Mobile Robot Teams, Erik Karulf
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
We propose applying various techniques and ideas, from video games, to the design of a task-level control interface for teams of mobile robots. The control interface, which visually resembles a video game and contains the functional elements of traditional robot control software, was designed and implemented using the ROS software framework. Unlike previous interfaces in the literature, our interface allows the user to control more than one robot and supports "sliding autonomy." This application allows the user to assign differing levels of independence to the robots dynamically, dependent on the situation. We present an overview of the implemented system, a …

Children's And Parents' Depression In Relation To Family-Based Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment Outcome, Rachel Kolko
Children's And Parents' Depression In Relation To Family-Based Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment Outcome, Rachel Kolko
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Baseline parent-report of child depression and parent self-reported depression have been found to predict childrenΓÇÖs outcome in family-based behavioral weight loss treatment: FBT), although less is known about how child self-reported depression, changes in depression over time, and depression assessed via multiple informants is associated with FBT outcome. Two hundred and forty-one overweight children and their parents entered FBT, and 178 completed the pre- and post-FBT assessments. Depression was assessed via child and parent self-report, and parent-report on child. Linear regression examined child and parent depression: both baseline and change from baseline to post-FBT) as predictors of child FBT outcome: …

Women in the United States are becoming infected with HIV more quickly now than ever before; many of whom are at higher risk because of their substance use habits or that of their partners.: CDC, 2010) This study analyzes cross sectional data regarding the risk behaviors and addiction severity of a sample of women receiving treatment for substance use disorders: SUDs). The data was gathered between 2006 and 2010 at a women's substance use treatment center in St. Louis, Missouri: MO), the name of which cannot be disclosed. We develop a scale, the HIV Risk Scale: HRS), to quantify a …
Decoding Brain Activation From Ipsilateral Cortex Using Ecog Signals In Humans, Yuzong Liu
Decoding Brain Activation From Ipsilateral Cortex Using Ecog Signals In Humans, Yuzong Liu
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Today, learning from the brain is the most challenging issue in many areas. Neural scientists, computer scientists, and engineers are collaborating in this broad research area. With better techniques, we can extract the brain signals by either non-invasive approach such as EEG: electroencephalography), fMRI, or invasive method such as ECoG: electrocorticography), FP: field potential) and signals from single unit. The challenge is, given the brain signals, how can we possibly decipher them? Brain Computer Interfaces, or BCIs, aim at utilizing the brain signals to control prothetic arms or operate devices. Previously almost all the research on BCIs focuses on decoding …

Motion-Based Video Games For Stroke Rehabilitation With Reduced Compensatory Motions, Gazihan Alankus
Motion-Based Video Games For Stroke Rehabilitation With Reduced Compensatory Motions, Gazihan Alankus
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability among adults in industrialized nations, with 80% of people who survive strokes experiencing motor disabilities. Recovery requires daily exercise with a high number of repetitions, often without therapist supervision. Motion-based video games can help motivate people with stroke to perform the necessary exercises to recover. We explore the design space of video games for stroke rehabilitation using Wii remotes and webcams as input devices, and share the lessons we learned about what makes games therapeutically useful. We demonstrate the feasibility of using games for home-based stroke therapy with a six-week case study. …
Quantitative Perfusion-Sensitive Mri Phantoms, Jeff Anderson
Quantitative Perfusion-Sensitive Mri Phantoms, Jeff Anderson
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Perfusion-sensitive MR methods are increasingly utilized in preclinical and clinical MR research studies with the promise of providing quantitative estimates of parameters that describe in vivo microvasculature. One of these techniques, dynamic contrast enhanced: DCE) MRI, has found particularly common use in oncology for the detection, staging, and monitoring of highly vascularized tumors. DCE-MRI has been qualitatively validated by various studies that show a high correlation between modeled parameters from DCE and histologically measured microvascular density: MVD). However, in the absence of a matching "gold-standard" technique, DCE-MRI has not yet been quantitatively validated: i.e., the accuracy of the estimated parameters …
Atrial Arrhythmogenic Substrates: The Role Of Structure And Molecular Remodeling, Christina Ambrosi
Atrial Arrhythmogenic Substrates: The Role Of Structure And Molecular Remodeling, Christina Ambrosi
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Atrial tachyarrhythmias, specifically atrial flutter: AFl) and fibrillation: AF), affect over 2.2 million Americans, leading to more hospitalizations than any other cardiac arrhythmia. These arrhythmias are defined by the presence of reentrant circuits of excitation leading to high atrial rates and uncoordinated activation of the ventricles. The underlying mechanisms of AFl/AF have proven complex and, despite a century of research, no one effective treatment has been developed. Surgical ablation and pharmacological therapies are both fraught with risks and potential pro-arrhythmic side effects. Electrical cardioversion, on the other hand, is extremely effective in terminating these arrhythmias, but the high-energy shocks required …
Mechanisms Of Observed Neuroprotection Of Dopaminergic Neurons In Wallerian Degeneration Slow (Wlds) Mice, Jo Ann Antenor-Dorsey
Mechanisms Of Observed Neuroprotection Of Dopaminergic Neurons In Wallerian Degeneration Slow (Wlds) Mice, Jo Ann Antenor-Dorsey
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
An emerging hypothesis in Parkinson's disease: PD) is that dopaminergic: DA) neurons degenerate through a "dying back" axonopathy wherein degeneration begins in the distal axon and progresses over time towards the cell body. Impaired axonal transport also appears to play an early, pivotal role in PD. Thus processes that delay axonal transport dysfunction and/or axonal degeneration might slow PD progression. Previously, we and others have found that the WldS mouse mutant: "Wallerian degeneration-slow"), which exhibits delayed axonal degeneration after peripheral axonopathy, also protects DA terminal fields from the PD-mimetics 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine: MPTP) and 6-hydroxydopamine: 6-OHDA) in vivo. To understand the mechanisms …

Lustmord And Loving The Other: A History Of Sexual Murder In Modern Germany And Austria (1873-1932), Amber Aragon-Yoshida
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Lustmord and Loving the Other: A History of Sexual Murder in Modern Germany and Austria: 1873–1932) examines the historical significance of German–speaking Europeans’ responses to crises of modernity vis–Ã –vis their fin de siècle cultural fascination with crimes and representations of Lustmord. I address the emergence and development of the concept of Lustmord, particularly the changing ways in which medical, legal, and criminal experts, survivors, perpetrators, neighbors, the press, and artists understood and attempted to explain this modern phenomenon. I demonstrate the ways in which a society came to name, understand, and, to some degree, even accept a troubling new …
Mass Spectrometry For Determination Of Conformation And Dynamics Of Proteins And Structure And Biosynthesis Of Bacterial Peptidoglycan, Jiawei Chen
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Mass spectrometry: MS) has emerged as an important tool for analyzing and characterizing large biomolecules. In this dissertation, two aspects of the development and application of MS-based approaches are presented; they include: 1) protein conformation and folding dynamics: in Chapters 2 to 5) and bacterial peptidoglycan: PG) structure and biosynthesis: Chapters 6 to 8). Chapter 1 serves as the introduction for both aspects. Part I of the dissertation focuses on the development of analytical methods combining fast photochemical oxidation of proteins: FPOP) and mass spectrometry analysis. In chapter 2 to 4, we discuss protein folding with sub-millisecond time resolution by …
Protein-Dna Recognition Models For The Homeodomain And C2h2 Zinc Finger Transcription Factor Families, Ryan Christensen
Protein-Dna Recognition Models For The Homeodomain And C2h2 Zinc Finger Transcription Factor Families, Ryan Christensen
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Transcription factors: TFs) play a central role in the gene regulatory network of each cell. They can stimulate or inhibit transcription of their target genes by binding to short, degenerate DNA sequence motifs. The goal of this research is to build improved models of TF binding site recognition. This can facilitate the determination of regulatory networks and also allow for the prediction of binding site motifs based only on the TF protein sequence. Recent technological advances have rapidly expanded the amount of quantitative TF binding data available. PBMs: Protein Binding Microarrays) have recently been implemented in a format that allows …
Development Of Speed, Memory, And Fluid Reasoning In Children, Duneesha De Alwis
Development Of Speed, Memory, And Fluid Reasoning In Children, Duneesha De Alwis
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Children's memory and higher-order cognitive abilities such as fluid reasoning improve with age, but the relationships between these abilities are not well understood. The developmental cascade model proposed by Fry and Hale: 1996) suggests that age related improvements in speed of processing are related to improvements in working memory, which in turn influence fluid reasoning. Recent research in adults suggests secondary memory is also an important predictor of fluid reasoning. The relations between working memory and fluid reasoning have been studied extensively in both adults and children. However, the relationships between working memory, secondary memory, and fluid reasoning have not …
A Hybrid Theory Of Global Justice, Jill Delston
A Hybrid Theory Of Global Justice, Jill Delston
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Although we have obligations to address global problems at a political level, we disagree on the source, justification, and content of these norms. For example, what kinds of obligations exist across national borders and why? What international actions are right and wrong? Who is required to perform these actions? When it is it permissible to use coercion at the global level? In my dissertation, I develop an original theory of global justice that can answer these questions and I show how my theory applies to current problems. I start by articulating why we need a theory of international justice and …
Real-Time Bioluminescence Imaging Of Salmonella-Neoplastic Cell Interactions, Kelly Flentie
Real-Time Bioluminescence Imaging Of Salmonella-Neoplastic Cell Interactions, Kelly Flentie
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Salmonella Typhimurium is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen and a common cause of gastroenteritis in humans. The organism utilizes a multitude of well-studied virulence factors to invade and replicate in host intestinal epithelial cells and macrophages. Interestingly, Salmonella is also capable of localizing to tumors in in vivo model systems, and while the typical route of Salmonella infection and pathogenesis has been thoroughly investigated, the behavior of Salmonella in the tumor microenvironment has not. Therefore, to investigate Salmonella and host behavior during bacterial-neoplastic cell interactions, I utilized two high-throughput screens. In the first, I designed a bioluminescent transposon-reporter trap to identify …
Practical And Robust Power Management For Wireless Sensor Networks, Gregory Hackmann
Practical And Robust Power Management For Wireless Sensor Networks, Gregory Hackmann
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Wireless Sensor Networks: WSNs) consist of tens or hundreds of small, inexpensive computers equipped with sensors and wireless communication capabilities. Because WSNs can be deployed without fixed infrastructure, they promise to enable sensing applications in environments where installing such infrastructure is not feasible. However, the lack of fixed infrastructure also presents a key challenge for application developers: sensor nodes must often operate for months or years at a time from fixed or limited energy sources. The focus of this dissertation is on reusable power management techniques designed to facilitate sensor network developers in achieving their systems' required lifetimes. Broadly speaking, …
Systematic Identification Of Independent Functional Non-Coding Rna Genes In Oxytricha Trifallax, Seolkyoung Jung
Systematic Identification Of Independent Functional Non-Coding Rna Genes In Oxytricha Trifallax, Seolkyoung Jung
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Functional noncoding RNAs participate in a variety of biological processes: for example, modulating translation, catalyzing biochemical reactions, sensing environments etc. Independent of conventional approaches such as transcriptomics and computational comparative analysis, we took advantage of the unusual genomic organization of the ciliated unicellular protozoan Oxytricha trifallax to screen for eukaryotic independent functional noncoding RNA genes. The Oxytricha macronuclear genome consists of thousands of gene-sized "nanochromosomes", each of which usually contains only a single gene. Using a draft Oxytricha trifallax genome assembly and a custom-written noncoding nanochromosome classifier, we identified a subset of nanochromosomes that lack any detectable protein coding gene, …
Joachim Du Bellay's Occasional Poetry: The Poetics Of Female Patronage, Elizabeth Landers
Joachim Du Bellay's Occasional Poetry: The Poetics Of Female Patronage, Elizabeth Landers
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This study seeks to demonstrate that female patrons at the Valois court--particularly Marguerite de France, and, to a lesser extent Diane de Poitiers--had a defining influence on both the career and the aesthetic choices of the sixteenth-century French poet Joachim Du Bellay. Although it has often been acknowledged that Du Bellay and Marguerite enjoyed a special relationship, the current study reveals the extent to which Marguerite served as an organizing principal for Du Bellay's entire writing life. As an admired patron, she provided moral support and networking opportunities that encouraged and rewarded Du Bellay's poetic production; her erudition and literary …
New Paradigm Of Defibrillation: Towards Painless Therapy, Wenwen Li
New Paradigm Of Defibrillation: Towards Painless Therapy, Wenwen Li
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Sudden cardiac death: SCD) causes approximately 300,000 - 400,000 deaths a year in the United States. It usually starts as ventricular tachycardia: VT) and then degenerates into ventricular fibrillation: VF). Implantable cardioverter defibrillator: ICD) therapy is the only reliable treatment of VT/VF and has been shown to effectively reduce mortality by many clinical trials. However, high-voltage ICD shocks could result in myocardial dysfunction and damage. The majority of patients receiving ICD therapy have a history of coronary disease; their hearts develop myocardium infarction, which could provide a substrate for reentrant tachy-arrhythmias. Other than lethal ventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation: AF) became …
Family Policy, Family Resources, And Children's Educational Achievement: A Comparative Study Of 18 Rich Countries, Yung Soo Lee
Family Policy, Family Resources, And Children's Educational Achievement: A Comparative Study Of 18 Rich Countries, Yung Soo Lee
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Educational achievement among children is one of the most important concerns for most contemporary societies. While numerous studies have explored factors associated with children's educational achievement, little research fully incorporated multi-level, multi-faceted contexts of child education. More specifically, less attention has been paid to the role of macro-level, policy contexts and their interactions with various aspects of family-level resources. To help fill the gap in the literature, this study investigates: 1) the role of various aspects of family-level resources, that is family financial, human, and social capital, in children's educational achievement,: 2) mediating pathways among those family-level resources, and: 3) …
Cardiac Remodeling Of Conduction, Repolarization And Excitation-Contraction Coupling: From Animal Model To Failing Human Heart, Qing Lou
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with rising impact with the increasing ageing population. This is in sharp contrast with the limited and non-ideal therapies available. Approximately 50% of deaths from heart failure are sudden and unexpected, and presumably the consequence of lethal ventricular arrhythmias. Despite significant reduction of mortality from sudden cardiac death achieved by ICDs and drugs such as beta-blockers, there remains a large room for improving the survivability of heart failure patients by advancing our understanding of arrhythmogenesis from molecular level to multi-cellular tissue level. Another important aspect of heart failure is …
