Using An Ethical Model To Manage Patient-Soldier Confidentiality When Medical Treatment For Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Is Refused, Janet C. Kelly Rgn, Rm, Ma, Llb (Hons), Pgche, Fhea Nov 2011

Using An Ethical Model To Manage Patient-Soldier Confidentiality When Medical Treatment For Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Is Refused, Janet C. Kelly Rgn, Rm, Ma, Llb (Hons), Pgche, Fhea

Journal of Health Ethics

This paper reviews the ethical tensions and the dual loyalty conflict between following military orders and professional codes of conduct. All competent patients have a right to refuse medical treatment. However, maintaining confidentiality is not an absolute right. In the military, a doctor may have a dual loyalty conflict between obeying military orders and following professional codes of practice. This can become exacerbated when a doctor in a military environment does not consider all the parties’ interests. This paper suggests that dual loyalty conflict in military healthcare practice in this environment is best managed via a discretionary ethic-role. This then …

Personhood And The Fetus: Settling The Dispute , Amanda Relph M.S. Nov 2011

Personhood And The Fetus: Settling The Dispute , Amanda Relph M.S.

Journal of Health Ethics

The concept of personhood and its relationship to health care has long been examined and debated. The working definition of personhood holds great power over many life-altering decisions, particularly in the realm of medical ethics. This article examines the very idea of personhood, current concept definitions and their impact on society, and poses an alternative view and definition for the concept. The final portion of the manuscript discusses potential areas of affect should the new definition be embraced. Information was gathered via historical research and literature review.

Severity Of Scope Versus Altruism: Working Against Organ Donation’S Realization Of Goals- An Essay, Michele Battle-Fisher Mph, Ma

Journal of Health Ethics

The number of incidences of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) supports the case that it is a public health emergency. The burden is often quantified by rates, leaving many people cold and unresponsive, leading to, as Nordgren and Morris McDonnell (2011) state, “the diminishing identifiably of a large number of victims” snarled in the scope-severity paradox. The subject may identify with the disease or illness, but who are these ill-fated others? It must go beyond recognition that there is an ESRD problem at hand. “Strength in numbers” hurts---according to scope-severity paradox and its close kin, scope insensitivity. There appears to …

The Ethics Issues Of Nuclear Energy: Hard Lessons Learned From Chernobyl And Fukushima, Hui Xiang, Yi Zhu Nov 2011

The Ethics Issues Of Nuclear Energy: Hard Lessons Learned From Chernobyl And Fukushima, Hui Xiang, Yi Zhu

Journal of Health Ethics

The Japan nuclear disaster once again raised the ethical issues of nuclear energy programs. Nuclear energy is considered as a sustainable energy source that reduces green house gas emission and produces far less wastes than conventional energy. On the other hand, nuclear fuel and wastes are highly radioactive, posing many threats to public health and the environment. Nuclear accidents are catastrophic and have a far-reaching impact on global health. Based on the ethical principles of utilitarilism, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, disclosure, and autonomy, mankind needs to take a more stringent approach on nuclear programs. Steps to be taken include improving nuclear …

A Holistic Approach Of Care For The Hearing Impaired Patient, Brett E. Kemker Ph.D., Edward L. Goshorn Ph.D., Virginia Sumrall Ph.D., Rn, Charles G. Marx Aud Nov 2011

A Holistic Approach Of Care For The Hearing Impaired Patient, Brett E. Kemker Ph.D., Edward L. Goshorn Ph.D., Virginia Sumrall Ph.D., Rn, Charles G. Marx Aud

Journal of Health Ethics

Theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness, as it applies to hearing impairment, requires that, for an individual to see health as the pattern of the whole, one needs to be able to see that disease or impairment is not a separate entity, but rather a manifestation of the evolving pattern of person-environment interaction (Newman, 2008). In the typical diversity training programs for health care professionals, diversity generally pertains to culture and ethnicity (Radler, 1999). However, the authors suggest that we should consider individuals with disabilities as an element of diversity training. Caring for patients with hearing loss including practical and …

The Bouvia Case Revisited: An Introduction To The Bioethical Topics Of Individual Rights, Acts Of Conscience, And The Right To Die, Rosann M. O’Dell M.S.

Journal of Health Ethics

After a series of court appeals Elizabeth Bouvia won her right to die in 1986. Twenty-five years after the Bouvia case, issues of individual rights, acts of conscience for health care professionals, and the right to die continually inform health care practice and public policy. This article examines these three vital issues in the context of their relevance today, as well as the progression of health policy in regard to these topics since the Bouvia case. The complexity of the Bouvia case keeps it in the forefront of bioethics and health law studies; it begs one to consider how the …

Parathyroid Hormone-Related Protein Is Not Required For Normal Ductal Or Alveolar Development In The Post-Natal Mammary Gland, Kata Boras-Granic, Joshua Vanhouten, Minoti Hiremath, John Wysolmerski Nov 2011

Parathyroid Hormone-Related Protein Is Not Required For Normal Ductal Or Alveolar Development In The Post-Natal Mammary Gland, Kata Boras-Granic, Joshua Vanhouten, Minoti Hiremath, John Wysolmerski

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

PTHrP is necessary for the formation of the embryonic mammary gland and, in its absence, the embryonic mammary bud fails to form the neonatal duct system. In addition, PTHrP is produced by the breast during lactation and contributes to the regulation of maternal calcium homeostasis during milk production. In this study, we examined the role of PTHrP during post-natal mammary development. Using a PTHrP-lacZ transgenic mouse, we surveyed the expression of PTHrP in the developing post-natal mouse mammary gland. We found that PTHrP expression is restricted to the basal cells of the gland during pubertal development and becomes expressed in …

Coming To Terms With Family Of Origin Issues And Relationship Satisfaction For Native American Individuals In Committed Intimate Relationships, Krystal Cobell Dagley Nov 2011

Coming To Terms With Family Of Origin Issues And Relationship Satisfaction For Native American Individuals In Committed Intimate Relationships, Krystal Cobell Dagley

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between childhood family of origin (FOO) adversities, coming to terms with them, and adult intimate relationship satisfaction for Native American individuals. The sample consisted of 186 Native American individuals in committed relationships who responded to the RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE). Among the items in the questionnaire were measures of childhood FOO adversity, whether respondents had come to terms with FOO problems, relationship quality and depression. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that coming to terms buffered the negative effects of childhood family of origin adversities on depression and relationship quality. Results suggest that coming to terms …

Indecisiveness And Hoarding, Randy O. Frost, David F. Tolin, Gail Steketee, Milim Oh Nov 2011

Indecisiveness And Hoarding, Randy O. Frost, David F. Tolin, Gail Steketee, Milim Oh

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Hoarding behavior and the problems associated with it have been the subject of an increasing amount of research. Early theorizing has suggested that problems with decision-making constitute a core feature, yet relatively few studies have examined this in depth. In the present study, indecisiveness was examined in large samples of adults who self-identified as having significant hoarding problems (n = 887), adult children of such individuals (n = 295), and spouses of such individuals (n = 120). People with hoarding problems reported more decision-making problems than children or spouses, and considerably more than community controls from other studies. Adult children …

Computational Modeling And Simulation Study Of Dermal Wound Healing Proliferative Phase, Le Yang Nov 2011

Computational Modeling And Simulation Study Of Dermal Wound Healing Proliferative Phase, Le Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Dermal wound healing proliferative phase is a complicated physiological process in which many growth factors, cell types and matrix components participate. The process must be well coordinated to restore the structural and functional integrity of tissue injured. Many disorders interrupting healing process result in abnormal healing such as chronic wounds or excessive scarring. Mathematical modeling has been used to investigate many aspects of wound healing. Angiogenesis is pertinent for dermal wound healing since the cellular activities involved in tissue repair requires oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to the wound site. By using a hybrid agent-based model, we investigated the …
