Now For The Science Bit: Implementing Community-Based Learning In Chemistry, Claire M. Mcdonnell, Patricia Ennis, Leslie Shoemaker

Articles

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of student learning from community engagement by critically assessing the implementation of this pedagogical approach in the context of teaching and learning chemistry and also evaluating the role of personal development in student-community engagement.

Design/methodology/approach – A case study on the implementation since 2007 of community-based learning (also called service-learning) projects in an academic department in Ireland is presented. Analysis of assessment grades, student reflective accounts and evaluation questionnaires informs this work as does a recently completed self-assessment of our activities using Shumer’s Self-Assessment for Service Learning. …

Synthesis, Evaluation And Structural Studies Of Antiproliferative Tubulin-Targeting Azetidin-2-Ones, Niamh O'Boyle, Lisa M. Greene, Orla Bergin, Jean-Baptiste Fichet, Thomas Mccabe, David G. Lloyd, Daniela M. Zisterer, Mary J. Meegan Jan 2011

Synthesis, Evaluation And Structural Studies Of Antiproliferative Tubulin-Targeting Azetidin-2-Ones, Niamh O'Boyle, Lisa M. Greene, Orla Bergin, Jean-Baptiste Fichet, Thomas Mccabe, David G. Lloyd, Daniela M. Zisterer, Mary J. Meegan

Articles

A series of azetidin-2-ones substituted at positions 2, 3 and 4 of the azetidinone ring scaffold were synthesised and evaluated for antiproliferative, cytotoxic and tubulin binding activity. In these compounds, the cis double bond of the vascular targeting agent combretastatin A-4 is replaced with the azetidinone ring in order to enhance the antiproliferative effects displayed by combretastatin A-4 and prevent the cis/trans isomerization that is associated with inactivation of combretastatin A-4. The series of azetidinones was synthetically accessible via the Staudinger and Reformatsky reactions. Of a diverse range of heterocyclic derivatives, 3-(2-thienyl) analogue 28 and 3-(3-thienyl) analogue 29 displayed the …

Protecting The Ivory Tower: Sensible Security Or Invasion Of Privacy, Stephen D. Lichtenstein

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Our beginning point is a recognition that the modern American college is not an insurer of the safety of its students. Whatever may have been its responsibility in an earlier era, the authoritarian role of today's college administrations has been notably diluted in recent decades. Trustees, administrators, and faculties have been required to yield to the expanding rights and privileges of their students. By constitutional amendment, written and unwritten law, and through the evolution of new customs, rights formerly possessed by college administrations have been transferred to students. College students today are no longer ninors; they are now regarded as …

Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice,, Katherine Womack

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This article first examines the historical background of the Virginian-American Indian identity after European contact in Part I. This section looks at the early interactions between American Indians and colonial settlers, the treaties that defined American Indian identity, and the first government-to-government relationships between the tribes and colonial powers. It also follows the changing social attitudes toward American Indians. Part II discusses how social attitudes in the early twentieth century about American Indians led to longreaching legal effects for Virginian-American Indians. Part III details the federal recognition process, and discusses how and why it denies Virginia's tribes an equal place …

Assistive Technology: Effects Of Training On Education Assistants' Perceptions Of Themselves As Users And Facilitators Of Assistive Technology And Consequent Transfer Of Skills To The Classroom Environment, Dianne J. Chambers

Theses

With the increasing use of Education Assistant Special Needs (EASN) to support students with special needs in regular settings, it is important to consider the tools and knowledge that they bring to the role. The use of assistive technology (AT) as a support for students with special needs in Australia and globally is becoming more prevalent as the technology becomes increasingly affordable and more widely available. Consequently, it is important that the staff who are most likely to be working closely with these students are competent and confident in the use of AT. The purpose of this research was to …

Pakistan's Failed Commitment: How Pakistan's Institutionalized Persecution Of The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Violates The International Covenant On Civil And Political Rights, Qasim Rashid Jan 2011

Pakistan's Failed Commitment: How Pakistan's Institutionalized Persecution Of The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Violates The International Covenant On Civil And Political Rights, Qasim Rashid

Law Student Publications

The United Nations (“UN”) adopted the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (“ICCPR”) in 1966 and officially implemented it in 1976 to ensure, among other guarantees, that no human is denied his or her right to equal voting, freedom of political association, due process of law, freedom of life, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is among 166 nations that have signed and ratified the ICCPR. Since signing the ICCPR in 2008 and ratifying it in 2010, however, Pakistan has perpetuated state-sanctioned and violent persecution of religious minority groups such …

The Reproductive Morphology And Physiological Age-Grading Of Female Cyrtobagous Salviniae, The Salvinia Weevil, Lee Jared Eisenberg Jan 2011

The Reproductive Morphology And Physiological Age-Grading Of Female Cyrtobagous Salviniae, The Salvinia Weevil, Lee Jared Eisenberg

LSU Master's Theses

Over 1000 dissections were performed on field, greenhouse and lab specimens in order to describe the reproductive system of Cyrtobagous salviniae, a biocontrol agent of Salvinia molesta (giant salvinia). The reproductive morphology of C. salviniae was described, the classes of reproductive development were characterized, and oviposition assessed. The reproductive system of C. salviniae consists of two ovaries, each of which is comprised of two membraneous ovarioles. These are each divided into a distal germarium and a proximal vitellarium that is connected to a lateral oviduct. The lateral oviducts unite to form a common oviduct through which eggs must pass for …

An Advanced Controller For A Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension, David J. Smith Jan 2011

An Advanced Controller For A Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension, David J. Smith

Master's Theses

An Advanced Controller for a Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension was designed, built and tested.  The suspension consisted of a Goodyear 1S3-011 air spring, IQ Valves high speed proportional solenoid valve, and a custom made accumulator.  Several controller designs specific to semi-active suspensions were designed and tested.  The controllers investigated were skyhook, acceleration driven damping, and a combined control law employing both a dual and single sensor version.  The implementation of skyhook control suffered performance degradation from the idealization due to particular elements of hardware, however acceleration driven damping showed a marked and statistically significant improvement over skyhook control, in hardware, by …

Performance Of Control Room Operators In Alarm Management, Dileep Buddaraju Jan 2011

Performance Of Control Room Operators In Alarm Management, Dileep Buddaraju

LSU Master's Theses

Pipelines transport millions of barrels of petroleum products every day. These systems have significant safety concerns. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, while concerned with oil and gas extraction rather than distribution, shares many of the same safety and reliability issues as distribution systems, and demonstrates the significant potential for major disasters in the pipeline industry. In this work, a research study is being conducted to further understanding of the role of operators in the management of alarm systems and to measure the performance of operators in handling abnormal situations like pressure loss, liquid inflow/outflow variation and …
