Disarming Youth Combatants: Mitigating Youth Radicalization And Violent Extremism, Alpaslan Özerdem, Sukanya Podder Jan 2011

Disarming Youth Combatants: Mitigating Youth Radicalization And Violent Extremism, Alpaslan Özerdem, Sukanya Podder

Journal of Strategic Security

In the complex of motivating variables that define the push and pull factors behind recruitment and participation in civil conflict, "radicalization"—or "violent extremism"—is not conceived as a very strong motive, as is the case with studies on terrorism. As part of disarming youth combatants, the linkages between reintegration outcomes and possible rerecruitment into radical and extremist violence must be better understood to mitigate such risks. In our analysis, the policies guiding reintegration of child soldiers and youth should be better attuned to the relationship between recruitment motivations and reintegration outcomes, and must be approached from a political lens rather than a …

Claims And Coverage In Montana For Damage To A Victim's Family Members, Greg Munro

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article explores those situations in which Montana tort law now recognizes secondary injuries to family members resulting from primary severe injuries or death of another family member, which recognition may invoke additional auto insurance coverage. The article first makes a short survey of the development of Montana tort law insofar as it has come to take cognizance of family injuries. The article then looks at the application of insurance law to those claims with special emphasis on recent cases.

Private Interest, Ethics, And Sincere Medical Practice, Yousuf Sayeed Jan 2011

Private Interest, Ethics, And Sincere Medical Practice, Yousuf Sayeed

Quill & Scope

Healthcare providers are held to high standards in society. They are venerated as saintly figures that always mean well, working solely for the benefit of their patients. Upon closer observation, it seems that this is not always the case. With the juxtaposing relationship between private interest and genu-ine healthcare, patients are beginning to realize that some healthcare providers are more concerned with generating profit rather than treating their patients. Through examining personal experiences, documented studies, and enlightening cases of unethical medical practice, it is evident that work must be done to restore the trust between patients and their healthcare provider.

A Nutty Approach To Disease Prevention, Amin Esfahani Jan 2011

A Nutty Approach To Disease Prevention, Amin Esfahani

Quill & Scope

Tree nuts are healthy foods with a favourable macro- and micronutrient profile. They are low in sat-urated fats and high in mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are also good sources of vegeta-ble protein, fiber, phytosterols, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals. Because of this healthy nutrient profile, it has been postulated that tree nuts may play a significant role in health maintenance and disease prevention. The purpose of this paper is 1) to provide a brief overview of the current scien-tific evidence on the role of tree nuts in prevention and management of diabetes and heart disease and 2) to outline …

A Possible Rejuvenation Of Neurons Using Human Umbilical Cord Blood Through The Akt Pathway, Vijay Mehta Jan 2011

A Possible Rejuvenation Of Neurons Using Human Umbilical Cord Blood Through The Akt Pathway, Vijay Mehta

Theses & ETDs

In the last 20 years the use of Human Umbilical Cord Blood Cells (CB), specifically the mononuclear cellular fraction of HUCB (MNC), has become an important therapy in multiple diseases, such as leukemia, and tissue degeneration. In the last 10 years the use of CB has been expanded to include neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injuries. Its use in in vivo studies of stroke and traumatic brain injury has resulted in more than 80% recovery of brain cells in damaged areas. Studies have elucidated that the peripheral response, the cells outside the brain, is responsible for much of the neuronal …

The Republic & Islam Tensions Of Secularism And Contemporary Islamic Expression, Christopher Hanks Jan 2011

The Republic & Islam Tensions Of Secularism And Contemporary Islamic Expression, Christopher Hanks

Theses & ETDs

Since the Algerian Revolution in the 1960s, the French Republic has cultivated a rather abrasive relationship with its Muslim immigrant population. Scholars like Jonathan Laurence (2006) and Bronwyn Winter (2008) espouse this problematic relationship to three Franco-Muslim controversies: a lack of Muslim interest group representation in the public sphere, a disproportionate representation of Islamic prayer spaces, and a twenty-year legal battle on religious head garments. Divided into three sections, this project attempts to analyze each controversy and its effect on the French-Muslim population. The first section, entitled French Muslim Associations and Federations, focuses primarily on the issues surrounding religious associations …

There has been compelling signs of the great potential of building further synergy with academics, researchers, and industry practitioners from the areas of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) managing risk events. This paper provides an introduction to risk management and how M&S has permeated the risk management process. The trend has been to harness the advantages of M&S tools and techniques in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in managing risks. However, the more important contribution of M&S may be in how it provides a way for specialists in various disciplines or industries interact to manage risks that require multi-disciplinary approach. Evaluating Algal Growth At Different Temperatures, Keelin Owen Cassidy Jan 2011

Evaluating Algal Growth At Different Temperatures, Keelin Owen Cassidy

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

In recent years, there has been a concern for the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and how it will be captured. One way to capture carbon dioxide is with algae. In this study, algae's growth was measured at different temperatures. The first part of the study was to grow Scenedesmus and Chlorella with M8 or urea growth media at a temperature of 25, 30 or 35ºC. It was found that 30ºC had the best growth rates for both algae. The second part studied Scenedesmus growth with urea, more in-depth, and found the optimum growth temperature to be …

Crummer Truist Portfolios

The analysis of the current economic situation forecasts a favorable environment for growth for U.S. corporations. The desired asset class allocation distributes only the minimum to cover the fixed income and cash constraint; the rest of the portfolio is allocated to equities. Predicted economic growth means increased production and low interest rates will provide a favorable environment for U.S. corporations to grow earnings. In addition, low inflation will help keep costs low, allowing businesses to hold prices for their goods and services. Even though we believe U.S. consumers are not ready to pay higher prices due to continued high unemployment, …

The Search For The Cure : Exploring The Mystery Behind The Importance Of Animal Therapy, Music Therapy, And Weighted Vests On Children Who Have Autism, Hailey Paver

Honors Capstones

The number of people diagnosed with autism has been dramatically increasing over the last ten years. It is estimated that in the next decade there will be more than four million people on the autism spectrum. There is a mystery surrounding autism in the world today, and that is because the cause and cure remain unknown and the symptoms seen are variable. New treatment approaches have been created to alleviate the debilitating symptoms of autism, but many treatments lack scientific evidence. My goal for this project was to investigate autism and the recently popular therapy approaches attached with the condition. …

A Post-Partisan Victory? Addressing The Success Of President Obama And The 111th Congress., Austin Bergan

Honors Capstones

In a time when high partisanship in Washington D.C. stymies the flow of legislative productivity, I seek to determine the success of President Obama and the 111th Congress in addressing "controversial" policy topics. President Obama entered office with a wide range of goals, and also pledged to implement a "post-partisan" style of politics. Using policy topics from the Congressional Digest, a publication that has provided nonpartisan policy coverage since 1921, I seek to determine how successful President Obama and the 111th Congress were in crafting new public laws. In order to measure demand for controversial legislation, the number of topics …

Gender And Ethnicity As Moderator Of Young Adults' Perception With Their Mother And Grandparents, Erika Quezada

Honors Capstones

Limited research is available on adolescent-grandparent relationships, especially from the young adult perspective and across ethnicities. This study explores the perception of the child-mother and the grandchild-grandparent relationships across Caucasian, African American and Hispanic ethnicities as well as the role young adults' gender plays in predicting the quality of the grandchild-grandparent relationship. This study was based on answers to a structured questionnaire from a sample of274 undergraduate students aged 19-24 at a large Midwestern university. Mixed results suggest that perception of the relationship is moderated by ethnicity and gender. Findings suggest that young adults of Caucasian descent perceived a more …

Children Giving Eyewitness Testmionies In A Court Of Law, Kaitlin Hargate Jan 2011

Children Giving Eyewitness Testmionies In A Court Of Law, Kaitlin Hargate

Honors Capstones

In a court of law, the issue of a child giving an eyewitness account has been debated among professionals. There is a significant amount of evidence suggesting that children are unable to give a reliable account. Their cognitive ability to perceive a questionable situation is not fully developed, and neither is their ability to recall memories. In order to examine the different variables surrounding this issue, a literature review was conducted. The results of numerous studies suggest that although children may not be the most reliable witnesses, sometimes they are the only witnesses. The following literature review discusses the conditions …
