Investigation Of The Hygroscopic And Morphological Properties Of Atmospheric Aerosols, Laura Cook Jan 2011

Investigation Of The Hygroscopic And Morphological Properties Of Atmospheric Aerosols, Laura Cook

Master’s Theses

The first objective of this thesis was to examine the hygroscopic and morphological nature of various substances through the use of an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM). The hygroscopic growth and changes in morphology for pure-component aerosols were studied for particles greater than 2 µm in size. Hygroscopic growth was observed through changes in relative humidity (RH) and hygroscopic growth curves were created. The second objective of this thesis, the hygroscopic growth of multi-component aerosol mixtures, was studied using Hygroscopic Tandem Differential Mobility Analysis(HTDMA). The size distribution for an aerosol stream was determined before and after the stream was subjected …

Challenges To The Patent System, Giuseppina D'Agostino Jan 2011

Challenges To The Patent System, Giuseppina D'Agostino

All Papers

One of the underlying justifications of the patent system is to encourage dissemination of scientific knowledge and promote innovation. Yet, the patent system is not a green card to innovation. Indeed, given our progress in science and the increasing rate of technological developments it is ironic that there is arguably a declining rate of innovation. From this perspective, it might be contended that the patent system is not meeting its said objectives. But the patent system should be seen in a wider context. While well-intended, it is far too simplistic to argue that patents are good or bad for innovation, …

Hibernacula Microclimate And White-Nose Syndrome Susceptibility In The Little Brown Myotis (Myotis Lucifugus), Laura Grieneisen Jan 2011

Hibernacula Microclimate And White-Nose Syndrome Susceptibility In The Little Brown Myotis (Myotis Lucifugus), Laura Grieneisen

Master’s Theses

The objective of this project was to determine the relationship between hibernacula microclimate and White-nose Syndrome (WNS), an emerging infectious disease in bats. Microclimate was examined on a species scale and at the level of the individual bat to determine if there was a difference in microclimate preference between healthy and WNS-affected little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) and to determine the role of microclimate in disease progression. There is anecdotal evidence that colder, drier hibernacula are less affected by WNS. This was tested by placing rugged temperature and humidity dataloggers in field sites throughout the eastern USA, experimentally determining the …

A Study Of High Solids Anaerobic Digestion Of Bucknell University Food Waste Followed By Aerobic Curing, Margaret Drennan Jan 2011

A Study Of High Solids Anaerobic Digestion Of Bucknell University Food Waste Followed By Aerobic Curing, Margaret Drennan

Master’s Theses

Anaerobic digestion of food scraps has the potential to accomplish waste minimization, energy production, and compost or humus production. At Bucknell University, removal of food scraps from the waste stream could reduce municipal solid waste transportation costs and landfill tipping fees, and provide methane and humus for use on campus. To determine the suitability of food waste produced at Bucknell for high-solids anaerobic digestion (HSAD), a year-long characterization study was conducted. Physical and chemical properties, waste biodegradability, and annual production of biodegradable waste were assessed. Bucknell University food and landscape waste was digested at pilot-scale for over a year to …

The Relationship Between Parenting Styles, Learning Autonomy, And Scholastic Achievement In Undergraduate College Students, Meghan L. Starr Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Parenting Styles, Learning Autonomy, And Scholastic Achievement In Undergraduate College Students, Meghan L. Starr

Master’s Theses

Throughout the years, the role that parents play with regard to a child’s academic achievement has been the source of considerable research. The type of parenting style employed by parents, whether it is authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive, has and continues to be a major theme in these studies. One area of particular interest that has been overlooked in these studies, however, is the influence that parents may have on a student’s learning autonomy. Learning autonomy is the idea that a student has internal motivation to learn or achieve. The purpose of this study was to investigate therelationship among the three …

Increasing Participation In The Classroom For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Heather Vining Jan 2011

Increasing Participation In The Classroom For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Heather Vining

Master’s Theses

Active participation is as essential a skill to children with autism as it is for children without autism, as children are expected to engage in these skills both in and outside the classroom. Without participation skills, children are at a disadvantage when it comes to school and other settings, such as extracurricular activities and the workforce. Recent research has shown that there are interventions available that aim to improve the social skills of children in the home and in the school. These interventions can be delivered in varying forms with the primary caregiver as the interventionist, the specialist as the …

Corrosion Characteristics And Mechanical Properties Of Aluminum Coatings Applied By The Cold Spray Process, Ben Bouffard

Master’s Theses

Aluminum coatings were applied to 2024-T3 and 7075-T6 aluminum alloys via the Cold Spray process. The coatings were applied to substrateswith various surface preparation and Cold Spray carrier gas combinations. Some samples were coated with an additional sealant with and without a chromate conversion layer. An exhaustive corrosion analysis was then performed which utilized a number of long termand accelerated tests in order to characterize the corrosion protection of the coatings.

The Happiness Of Single Mothers After Welfare Reform, John Ifcher Jan 2011

The Happiness Of Single Mothers After Welfare Reform, John Ifcher

Economics

U.S. welfare and tax policies targeting single mothers were transformed over a decade ago. What was the impact on single mothers' happiness? Using data from the General Social Survey, difference in difference estimators are calculated. The results appear to indicate that the package of welfare and tax policy changes increased happiness. The results are largely consistent across three comparison groups and robust to various specification checks. This research nicely complements the literature by examining the impact of the welfare and tax policy changes on a novel outcome measure, self-reported happiness.

Reading Dialogically : A Bakhtinian Approach To Interpreting Elijah, Mark Hoehner Jan 2011

Reading Dialogically : A Bakhtinian Approach To Interpreting Elijah, Mark Hoehner

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

In this introduction, we will explore the great debate about the proper interpretation of textual characters within the past century, as well as the presuppositions that led to certain interpretations of textual characters. 3 We will also see how narrative-critical approaches have influenced the interpretation of Old Testament characters since Auerbach’s 1947 work. This will set the stage for showing that Mikhail Bakhtin’s dialogic approach is a valuable contribution to the great debate over how to interpret textual characters, specifically the characters found in Old Testament narratives.

Repression Of Protein Kinase C Delta In Human Squamous Cell Carcinomas By Ras, Fyn And Nf-Kappa B Signaling, Vipin Yadav Jan 2011

Repression Of Protein Kinase C Delta In Human Squamous Cell Carcinomas By Ras, Fyn And Nf-Kappa B Signaling, Vipin Yadav

Dissertations

The delta isoform of Protein Kinase C (PKC-delta) is widely expressed in many normal tissues, including epidermal keratinocytes, and has a critical role in UV-induced apoptosis. However, PKC-delta is frequently lost in chemically or UV-induced mouse skin tumors, as well as in human cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). Furthermore, re-expression of PKC-delta in human SCC lines is sufficient to induce apoptosis and suppress tumorigenicity, making PKC-delta a potential tumor suppressor gene for SCCs. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the mechanism of PKC-delta loss in human SCCs.

To determine the mechanism of PKC-delta loss in human SCCs, we …

Keeping True To The Cathedral Within: A Case Study Of Wheaton Academy And The Initiation, Development, And Fulfillment Of Its Christian Saga Of Social Justice, Barbara Dill-Varga

Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on a case study of Wheaton Academy, a nondenominational Christian high school in West Chicago, Illinois. This study seeks to understand, through a study of its organizational saga, how and why this antebellum academy has survived for over 157 years and to what extent it has been able to maintain its founding fathers' Christian vision of social justice. Robert Benne's framework, focused on Vision, Ethos, and People as detailed in Quality with Soul, provides a useful lens to organize the study through three phases of the life of the school's saga: initiation, development, and fulfillment.

The central …

Russia’S Revival: Ambitions, Limitations, And Opportunities For The United States, John W. Parker Jan 2011

Russia’S Revival: Ambitions, Limitations, And Opportunities For The United States, John W. Parker

INSS Strategic Perspectives

Independent Russia is approaching the start of its third decade of post-Soviet existence. After the economic chaos of the Boris Yeltsin decade and the recovery and stabilization of the Vladimir Putin decade, Russia’s leaders have high ambitions for a return to great power status in the years ahead. Their aspirations are tempered, however, by the realities of Russia’s social, economic, and military shortcomings and vulnerabilities, laid painfully bare by the stress test of the recent global financial crisis. Looking ahead, some also calculate that Russia will be increasingly challenged in the Far East by a rising China and in the …

Getting Beyond Taiwan? Chinese Foreign Policy And Pla Modernization, Michael A. Glosny Jan 2011

Getting Beyond Taiwan? Chinese Foreign Policy And Pla Modernization, Michael A. Glosny

Strategic Forums

Since the mid-1990s, China’s military modernization has focused on deterring Taiwan independence and preparing for a military response if deterrence fails. Given China’s assumption of U.S. intervention in a Taiwan conflict, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has been developing military capabilities to deter, delay, and disrupt U.S. military support operations. The 2008 election of Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, however, has contributed to improved cross-strait economic and political cooperation and dramatically reduced the threat of Taiwan independence and war across the Taiwan Strait. Cooperation has included full restoration of direct shipping, flights, and mail across the strait, Taiwan’s participation in the …

Collagen Binding Proteins In Helicobacter Pylori, Carmel Cremin Jan 2011

Collagen Binding Proteins In Helicobacter Pylori, Carmel Cremin

Masters

Helicobacter pylori is a human pathogen and the causative agent of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric malignancies. A number of H. pylori virulence factors have been described including, CagA, VacA, neutrophil activating protein, and expression of receptors for binding to extracellular matrix proteins (adhesins). H. pylori interacts with extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins such as collagen IV, laminin, vitronectin and fibronectin, that can be exposed due to loss of integrity of the gastric epithelial cell layer. These interactions may be important in the pathogenesis of the organism. This study examines the interaction of H. pylori with collagen IV in an …

Feminist Legal Theory As Embodied Justice, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Isabel Karpin Jan 2011

Feminist Legal Theory As Embodied Justice, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Isabel Karpin

Articles & Book Chapters

This chapter examines a shift within feminist legal theory from a central concern with sexual difference to one of embodied difference. The subject at the center of this theorizing is marked by bodily (as opposed to sexual) difference from the normative, self-actualizing individual of legal subjecthood. Bioethical and biotechnological inquiries too are concerned with bodily differentiation. Bodies discussed in these contexts are often anomalous or pathologized. They are brought under scrutiny, when they deviate from what is often regarded as "normal," that which is both valorized for its "species typicality" and, by extension, held out as the "natural" state of …

Mechanisms Linking Violence Exposure And School Engagement Among African American Adolescents: Examining The Roles Of Psychological Problem Behaviors And Gender, Dexter R. Voisin Jan 2011

Mechanisms Linking Violence Exposure And School Engagement Among African American Adolescents: Examining The Roles Of Psychological Problem Behaviors And Gender, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

This study examines whether the relationship between violence exposure and school engagement is mediated by psychological problem behaviors and whether such relationships are gendered. Five hundred and sixty-three high school African American adolescents (ages 13-19 years) completed questionnaires that assessed two types of violence exposure (community violence and marital conflict), psychological problem behaviors (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggressive behaviors), and school engagement (i.e., student-teacher connectedness and grade point average [GPA] obtained from school records). For male adolescents, psychological problem behaviors collectively mediated the relationship between community violence exposure and student-teacher connectedness. For female adolescents, both community …

Embryonic Stem Cell Bioprinting For Uniform And Controlled Size Embryoid Body Formation, Umut A. Gurkan Jan 2011

Embryonic Stem Cell Bioprinting For Uniform And Controlled Size Embryoid Body Formation, Umut A. Gurkan

Faculty Scholarship

Embryonic stem cells ESCs are pluripotent with multilineage potential to differentiate into virtually all cell types in the organism and thus hold a great promise for cell therapy and regenerative medicine. In vitro differentiation of ESCs starts with a phase known as embryoid body EB formation. EB mimics the early stages of embryogenesis and plays an essential role in ESC differentiation in vitro. EB uniformity and size are critical parameters that directly influence the phenotype expression of ESCs. Various methods have been developed to form EBs, which involve natural aggregation of cells. However, challenges persist to form EBs with controlled …

Changing Property In A Changing World: A Call For The End Of Perpetual Conservation Easements, Jessica Owley Jan 2011

Changing Property In A Changing World: A Call For The End Of Perpetual Conservation Easements, Jessica Owley

Journal Articles

Increasing environmental problems, including those associated with climate change, highlight the need for land conservation. Dissatisfaction with public methods of environmental protection has spurred conservationists to pursue private options. One of the most common private land conservation tools is the conservation easement. At first blush, this relatively new servitude appears to provide a creative method for achieving widespread conservation. Instead, however, conservation easements often fail to accommodate the reality of our current environmental problems. These perpetual (often private) agreements lack flexibility, making them inappropriate tools for environmental protection in the context of climate change and our evolving understanding of conservation …

A Review Of Flavobacterium Psychrophilum Biology, Clinical Signs, And Bacterial Cold Water Disease Prevention And Treatment, Michael E. Barnes, Michael L. Brown Jan 2011

A Review Of Flavobacterium Psychrophilum Biology, Clinical Signs, And Bacterial Cold Water Disease Prevention And Treatment, Michael E. Barnes, Michael L. Brown

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Flavobacterium psychrophilum is a ubiquitous bacterium in the aquatic environment, particularly in freshwater [1]. As the etiological agent of bacterial coldwater disease, it is a serious fish pathogen causing substantial economic losses and rearing difficulties to both commercial and conservation aquaculture [2]. This review paper describes the epidemiology, clinical signs, prevention, and treatment of the fish diseases attributed to this pathogen, which are similar despite the different geographic labels. In addition, the basic biology of F. psychrophilum and the techniques required for successful bacterial culture, isolation, and identification are discussed.
