A Brief Overview Of Adolescent Developmental Problems In Hong Kong, Daniel T. L. Shek, Hing Keung Ma, Rachel C. F. Sun
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Several adolescent developmental problems in Hong Kong are briefly reviewed in this paper. First, rising adolescent substance abuse trends are described. Second, Internet use problems and Internet addiction among young people are examined. Third, worrying trends in adolescent sexuality are identified. Fourth, phenomena on bullying among young people are reviewed. Finally, phenomena related to adolescent materialistic orientation are focused upon. With reference to these adolescent developmental problems, possible solutions are briefly discussed particularly with reference to the ecological perspective. It is argued that the related scientific literature provides useful pointers for designing the curriculum in the extension phase of the …
Shrubs As Sentinels Of Ordnance Contamination: Using Plant Physiology And Remote Sensing To Detect Tnt In Soils, Kathryn Rubis
Shrubs As Sentinels Of Ordnance Contamination: Using Plant Physiology And Remote Sensing To Detect Tnt In Soils, Kathryn Rubis
Theses and Dissertations
Methods for rapid, safe and effective detection of unmapped buried ordnance are vital to the protection of humans and environmental quality throughout the world. This study aimed to investigate the use of phytosensing and to understand the physiological response of woody plants to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) contamination. Baccharis halimifolia were potted in soils containing various concentrations of TNT and physiological responses were observed over a 9-week experimental period. Measurements included the collection of remotely sensed data, such as hyperspectral reflectance and chlorophyll fluorescence, and traditional plant-level physiological data. In accordance with the hypothesis, low levels of TNT improved physiological response in …

Molecular Diagnostics In Periprosthetic Joint Infection., Javad Parvizi, Lesley Walinchus, Bahar Adeli
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a significant and costly challenge to the orthopedic community. The lack of a gold standard for diagnosis remains the biggest obstacle in the detection and subsequent treatment of PJI. Molecular markers in the serum and joint fluid aspirate hold immense promise to enhance the development of a firm diagnostic criterion. The primary goal is one marker with high sensitivity and specificity. Here, we review our current research efforts in the field of molecular markers: C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, white blood cells, and leukocyte esterase. Each marker has been studied to determine its sensitivity, specificity, …

Hypothetical Thermodynamic Properties: Application Of Correlation Gas-Chromatography To The Evaluation Of The Vaporization Enthalpies Of Fluorinated Compounds, Darrell Wayne Hasty
Hypothetical Thermodynamic Properties: Application Of Correlation Gas-Chromatography To The Evaluation Of The Vaporization Enthalpies Of Fluorinated Compounds, Darrell Wayne Hasty
Theses
Relatively little vaporization enthalpy data has been published for fluorinated compounds. The increasing commercial use of fluorinated chemicals and their rapid spreading within our biosphere necessitates a better understanding of their thermodynamic properties and long-term stability. This paper presents an initial attempt at applying correlation gas chromatography (C-GC) to investigate its possible use in deriving the enthalpy of vaporization at 298 K for twenty-seven partially or fully fluorinated compounds. Additionally, the behavior of the n-perfluoroalkanes are examined and compared to their hydrocarbon analogues. Although published data for the n-perfluoroalkanes as a function of the number of carbons appears to be …

Efficacy Of A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment For Insomnia Among Afghanistan And Iraq (Oef/Oif) Veterans With Ptsd, Margolies Skye Ochsner
Theses and Dissertations
Sleep disturbances are a core and salient feature of PTSD and can maintain or exacerbate associated symptoms. Recent research demonstrates that cognitive-behavioral sleep-focused interventions improve sleep disturbances as well as PTSD symptoms. The present study is a randomized controlled trial comparing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) to a waitlist control group. Conducted at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the study: 1) compared subjective outcome measures of sleep amongst veterans assigned to either a treatment group (CBT-I) or a waitlist control group; (2) examined the influence of the intervention on measures of PTSD, general mood and daytime functioning, comparing veterans …

Checking The Walls For Cracks: Race/Ethnic Differences In Age-Related Arterial Changes, And The Relevance Of Carotid Ultrasound For Subclinical Neurovascular Disease, Matthew Scott Markert
Open Access Dissertations
Despite advances, stroke remains the largest cause of disability and fourth leading cause of death in the United States. The relationship between changes in human vasculature (atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis) prior to clinical incident, and other risk factors for stroke remains unclear. This dissertation represents work towards the identification of imaging biomarkers for vascular change, focusing on ultrasound to characterize persons at risk, including differences among race/ethnic groups. This research contained three distinct projects. The first goal was to determine if changes within ultrasonographic measures of carotid vasculature could be found across race/ethnic groups after adjustment for risk factors. The second …

Predictors Of Nulliparas' Childbirth Preferences, Adriana Arcia
Open Access Dissertations
The aims of this study were to describe the childbirth preferences of nulliparous women in early pregnancy and to develop a model of the predictors of those preferences. Participants were recruited with Facebook advertisements and data were collected from 344 women via online survey. Predictors were measured using the Utah Test for the Childbearing Year. Predictors of childbirth preferences (type of birth care provider, birth setting, mode of delivery, and use/avoidance of pain medication) were tested using structural equation modeling. Conventional content analysis was employed to analyze women’s reasons for selecting the type of provider and setting they expected for …

Sustainable Cooperation In Global Climate Policy: Specific Formulas And Emission Targets To Build On Copenhagen And Cancun, Valentina Bosetti, Jeffrey Frankel
Sustainable Cooperation In Global Climate Policy: Specific Formulas And Emission Targets To Build On Copenhagen And Cancun, Valentina Bosetti, Jeffrey Frankel
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We offer a framework to assign quantitative allocations of emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), across countries, one budget period at a time. Under the two-part plan: (i) China, India, and other developing countries accept targets at Business as Usual (BAU) in the coming budget period, the same period in which the US first agrees to cuts below BAU; and (ii) all countries are asked in the future to make further cuts in accordance with a common numerical formula to all. The formula is expressed as the sum of a Progressive Reductions Factor, a Latecomer Catch-up Factor, and a Gradual Equalization …

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
In order to reach a goal of universal access to modern energy services in Africa by 2030, consideration of various electricity sector pathways is required to help inform policy-makers and investors, and help guide power system design. To that end, and building on existing tools and analysis, we present several ‘high-level’, transparent, and economy-wide scenarios for the sub-Saharan African power sector to 2030. We construct these simple scenarios against the backdrop of historical trends and various interpretations of universal access. They are designed to provide the international community with an indication of the overall scale of the effort required. We …
Adaptation Can Help Mitigation: An Integrated Approach To Post-2012 Climate Policy, Francesco Bosello, Carlo Carraro, Enrica De Cian
Adaptation Can Help Mitigation: An Integrated Approach To Post-2012 Climate Policy, Francesco Bosello, Carlo Carraro, Enrica De Cian
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The latest round of international negotiations in Copenhagen led to a set of commitments on emission reductions which are unlikely to stabilise global warming below or around 2°C. As a consequence, in the absence of additional ambitious policy measures, adaptation will be needed to address climate-related damages. What is the role of adaptation in this setting? How is it optimally allocated across regions and time? To address these questions, this paper analyses the optimal mix of adaptation and mitigation expenditures in a cost-effective setting in which countries cooperate to achieve a long-term stabilisation target (550 CO2-eq). It uses an Integrated …

Who Should Bear The Cost Of China’S Carbon Emissions Embodied In Goods For Exports?, Zhongxiang Zhang
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
China’s capital-intensive, export-oriented, spectacular economic growth since launching its open-door policy and economic reforms in late 1978 not only has created jobs and has lifted millions of the Chinese people out of poverty, but also has given rise to unprecedented environmental pollution and CO2 emissions. While estimates of the embedded CO2 emissions in China’s trade differ, both single country studies for China and global studies show a hefty chunk of China’s CO2 emissions embedded in trade. This portion of CO2 emissions had helped to turn China into the world’s largest carbon emitter, and is further widening its gap with the …

Longitudinal High-Dimensional Data Analysis, Vadim Zipunnikov, Sonja Greven, Brian Caffo, Daniel S. Reich, Ciprian Crainiceanu
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
We develop a flexible framework for modeling high-dimensional functional and imaging data observed longitudinally. The approach decomposes the observed variability of high-dimensional observations measured at multiple visits into three additive components: a subject-specific functional random intercept that quantifies the cross-sectional variability, a subject-specific functional slope that quantifies the dynamic irreversible deformation over multiple visits, and a subject-visit specific functional deviation that quantifies exchangeable or reversible visit-to-visit changes. The proposed method is very fast, scalable to studies including ultra-high dimensional data, and can easily be adapted to and executed on modest computing infrastructures. The method is applied to the longitudinal analysis …
Assessing Association For Bivariate Survival Data With Interval Sampling: A Copula Model Approach With Application To Aids Study, Hong Zhu, Mei-Cheng Wang
Assessing Association For Bivariate Survival Data With Interval Sampling: A Copula Model Approach With Application To Aids Study, Hong Zhu, Mei-Cheng Wang
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
In disease surveillance systems or registries, bivariate survival data are typically collected under interval sampling. It refers to a situation when entry into a registry is at the time of the first failure event (e.g., HIV infection) within a calendar time interval, the time of the initiating event (e.g., birth) is retrospectively identified for all the cases in the registry, and subsequently the second failure event (e.g., death) is observed during the follow-up. Sampling bias is induced due to the selection process that the data are collected conditioning on the first failure event occurs within a time interval. Consequently, the …
