Body Image, Self-Esteem, And Sexual Self-Consciousness In Men And Woman As Predicted By Experiences Of Sexual Objectification By Others, Linda Rae Baggett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
As the result of living in a culture that increasingly places importance oh physical appearance, both men and women are sexually objectified by others. This leads to harmful objectification of the self and past research has shown self-objectification to predict decreased self-esteem and greater body image disturbances and sexual self-consciousness. However, the direct effects of sexual objectification by others were not examined. Further, most studies on the topic focused on the experiences of women and did not allow for the exploration of the positive experiences of being sexually objectified, despite evidence that they existed. Therefore, the purpose of this study …

After combat, social support may reduce the severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol consumption. This study tested the buffering and direct effect theories of social support to determine if combat exposure moderated the relationship between unit cohesion and PTSD and the relationship between postdeployment social support and PTSD. The impact of combat exposure, unit cohesion, and postdeployment social support on alcohol consumption was investigated. Seventy hazardous-drinking veterans (63% Caucasian, 90% men) completed structured interviews and self-report measures. Combat exposure moderated the relationship between unit cohesion and PTSD. Unit cohesion was related to reduced PTSD severity for lower combat …

The Effectiveness Of Treatments For Trauma: A Quantitative Review, Joseph M. Roberts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This quantitative review examined the published research on the effectiveness of treatments for trauma. The review included 31 studies that compared treatment for trauma with a wait-list or placebo control group and provided information about the time between the traumatic event and when therapy occurred.Findings from the review confirm there is a beneficial effect of therapy and suggest that gains made in therapy are maintained and increase after therapy ends. Congitive-behavioral therapies appeared to be better than other treatments.Analysis also revealed that treatment was less effective, and sometimes harmful, for patients undergoing psychological debriefings. The differences between treatments did not depend on …
Two Novel Applications Of The Information Entropy Method For Evaluation Of Acoustic Emission Measurements, Ming Fan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Two of the major obstacles that limit the applications of the acoustic emission (AE) technique from being more acceptable for material characterization are: 1) difficulty of finding an efficient method to evaluate AE measurements when there are incomplete signals; and 2) poor repeatability and reproducibility of AE results. This thesis contains two manuscripts to address these problems. The first one is aimed at studying the consequence of incompleteness of AE signals, and our results suggest that the information entropy method is able to minimize inconsistent results caused by the incompleteness. The second one is aimed at studying the reproducibility of …

Sperm Allocation And Sociosexual Behavior In Meadow Voles, Ashlee Anne Vaughn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, are microtine rodents that inhabit grasslands in the temperate zone of northeastern and central North America. During the breeding season, males inhabit large overlapping home ranges that encompass the territories of one or more females. Males and females are promiscuous and males compete with other males for mating opportunities with females. The threat of this competition varies depending on the presence of a rival, the number of rivals, and the quality of a rival. Male and female meadow voles scent mark and conspecifics use the information contained in these scent marks to locate mates and rivals. …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study provided analysis of the distribution of solids, volume of solids by weight and volume of discharge of the backwash operations at Sheahan Pumping Station. The sample data was analyzed statistically against factors that potentially affect the results. The combination of the data and statistical analysis helped formulated a theory of how the solids behave within the recovery basin. The suggested behavior of the suspended solids within the recovery basin is supported by visual observations, recovery basin characteristics, residual pump location and suspended solid data. Knowing the behavior of suspended solids within the basin is critical in designing an …

Binning Metagenomic Data By Cssr, Rekha Bhaskarabhatla
Binning Metagenomic Data By Cssr, Rekha Bhaskarabhatla
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Metagenomics is the study of microbes in their natural environments without the need for isolation and lab cultivation. The DNA fragments obtained from sequencing of a sample of mixed species requires taxonomic characterization called binning. My research concerns binning of metagenomic data using a novel approach. Each genomic sequence was codified based on their Cistronic Stop Signal Ratio (CSSR) values. Since the genic CSSR values of phylogenetically related organisms often share a definable pattern, a neural network was trained to recognize the genic CSSR patterns of known species. The trained neural network was then used to cluster the CSSR values from …

Do Exercise Motives Predict Obligatory Exercise?, Mary Pritchard, Jessica L. Beaver
Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Few studies have examined whether factors predicting obligatory exercise differ by gender. 303 participants completed the Obligatory Exercise Questionnaire and the Reason for Exercise Inventory. All variables correlated significantly. However, the correlation between exercising for fitness and obligatory exercise was significantly stronger in women than men. In women, obligatory exercise was predicted by exercising to improve body tone, fitness, and to enhance mood; in men, obligatory exercise was predicted by exercising to improve body tone, enjoyment, and perceived attractiveness. Implications for treatment are discussed.

The Chinese Brush Stroke Experience In Bereavement Counseling, Grace Kwan
The Chinese Brush Stroke Experience In Bereavement Counseling, Grace Kwan
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
In the field of expressive therapies, there are different techniques to help bereaved people to better cope with their losses (e.g., Attig, 2000; Thompson, 2003; Gulledge, 2003; Rogers, 2007; Chandler, 2007). Among various expressive arts techniques, Chinese calligraphy has been used as a therapeutic intervention for behavioral, emotional, and mental health issues (Kao, 1991; Chen, 2003). However, there is no research on using Chinese brushstroke techniques in working with people who have experienced losses. This research focuses on the experience of practicing Chinese brushstroke technique as an expressive therapeutic approach to work with seniors in expressing their feelings toward the …
