“That’S What Friends Do”: Informal Caregiving For Chronically Ill Midlife And Older Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Adults, Anna M. Muraco, Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen
Sociology Faculty Works
This study examines the relationships between friends; a caregiver who provides care to a care recipient, who is a lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) adult over age 50 in need of assistance due to chronic physical or mental health conditions. Using a sample of 18 care pairs (n = 36), this work examines qualitative interview data. Findings from the study include: (a) both the care recipient and the caregiver receive benefits from the friendship; (b) caregiving alters and challenges the friendship; and (c) friends assume differential levels of commitment and responsibility in providing care. Studying this population of LGB …
Diffusion Tensor Imaging Data Reveals Grm3 Polymorphism's Association With White Matter Integrity In Schizophrenia, Joanna Mounce
Diffusion Tensor Imaging Data Reveals Grm3 Polymorphism's Association With White Matter Integrity In Schizophrenia, Joanna Mounce
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
While the functional disconnectivity hypothesis of schizophrenia has been the subject of much study, very little is known about the contribution of individual genotypes to connectivity between brain regions in either schizophrenia patients or in healthy controls. In this study, we obtained diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) maps and genome-wide SNP data from 74 cases and 87 age- and gender-matched controls. Correlations were performed between loading coefficients obtained from fractional anisotropy (FA) values in networks of regions representing 6 maximally independent components and 134 SNPs in genes that have been found to be important in myelination and/or schizophrenia. By using independent …
Assessment Of Functional Characteristics Of Small Gtpases Using Small Molecules, Jacob Ongudi Agola
Assessment Of Functional Characteristics Of Small Gtpases Using Small Molecules, Jacob Ongudi Agola
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Rab and Rho subfamilies of GTPases are functionally linked to intracellular trafficking and organization of the cytoskeleton respectively. Despite their roles, use of small molecule inhibitors or activators to map the functionality of these GTPases remains largely underexplored due to lack of suitable compounds. In this dissertation, we report on the functional characterization of Rab7 and Rac1 GTPases using small molecules. 2-(benzoylcarbamothioylamino)-5,5-dimethyl-4,7- dihydrothieno[2,3-c]pyran-3-carboxylic acid (PubChem #: CID1067700) has been used to characterize Rab7. Using bead based flow cytometry, CID1067700 was found to have significant inhibitory potency on Rab7 nucleotide binding with a respective inhibitory efficacy of 80% for BODIPY-GTP and …
Efficiently Bootstrapping Extreme Scale Software Systems, Joshua Goehner
Efficiently Bootstrapping Extreme Scale Software Systems, Joshua Goehner
Computer Science ETDs
Many scientific fields and commercial industries need to solve computationally large problems. These problems can often be broken into smaller tasks, which can be executed in parallel, on large computer systems. In pursuit of solving ever larger problems in a more timely manner, the number of nodes in these large computer systems have grown to extremely large scales. All of the extreme-scale-software systems that run on these extreme-scale-computational systems go through what we call a bootstrapping phase. During this phase, the software system is deployed onto a set of computers and its initialization information is disseminated. In this thesis, we …
Analysis Of Turnip Crinkle Virus Effects On The Innate And Adaptive Immunity In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Teresa J. Donze
Analysis Of Turnip Crinkle Virus Effects On The Innate And Adaptive Immunity In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Teresa J. Donze
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The ability to understand the interactions between plants and the variety of pathogens they encounter on a daily basis is an important area of research. In the following work presented in this dissertation, I sought to better understand the mechanisms that Turnip crinkle virus (TCV) employs to elude the defense responses of the host plant Arabidopsis thaliana. It was previously determined that TCV coat protein (CP) interacts with a transcription factor, TIP, within the about 10 amino acid region near the N-terminus of the CP called the R-domain. When this interaction was disrupted by making single amino acid substitutions …
Globalization And Commitment In Corporate Social Responsibility: Cross-National Analyses Of Institutional And Political-Economy Effect, Alwyn Lim, Kiyoteru Tsutsui
Globalization And Commitment In Corporate Social Responsibility: Cross-National Analyses Of Institutional And Political-Economy Effect, Alwyn Lim, Kiyoteru Tsutsui
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article examines why global corporate social responsibility (CSR) frameworks havegained popularity in the past decade, despite their uncertain costs and benefits, and how theyaffect adherents’ behavior. We focus on the two largest global frameworks—the United NationsGlobal Compact and the Global Reporting Initiative—to examine patterns of CSR adoption bygovernments and corporations. Drawing on institutional and political-economy theories, wedevelop a new analytic framework that focuses on four key environmental factors—globalinstitutional pressure, local receptivity, foreign economic penetration, and national economicsystem. We propose two arguments about the relationship between stated commitment andsubsequent action: decoupling due to lack of capacity and organized hypocrisy due …
A Comparison Of Renewable Portfolio Standards And Feed-In Tariffs As Legislative Mechanisms To Provide Renewable Power Incentives: Impacts On Power Supply, Transmission, And Grid Intermittency, Steven Ferrey
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
A federalist form of government is used in several important nations, including the United States, Germany, India, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia, and Switzerland. A federalist form of government divides political sovereignty between a central federal authority and constituent states or provinces. To implement new government policy regulating private power, the challenging transcendent issues are legal and regulatory, rather than technical. Certain measures in various industrialized countries, when implemented at the state rather than federal level, must be designed and implemented carefully to achieve a legal, regulatory fit in a federalist system of government.
For purposes of comparison, this article considers …

Modeling Parental Provisioning By Red-Winged Blackbirds In North Dakota, George M. Linz, Richard S. Sawin, Mark W. Lutman, William J. Bleier
The Prairie Naturalist
Male red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) exhibit a difference in nest provisioning rates along an east-west gradient in North America. North Dakota is located in the center of North America and harbors a large population of breeding red-winged blackbirds (RWBL). This location provided an opportunity to compare provisioning rates in the central U.S. with those reported for the eastern and western populations. We placed video cameras at RWBL nests to record male and female feeding trips. Thirty-four nests were located on territories with original males and 30 were on territories where a replacement (floater) male had taken over a …

State Mandated Disability Insurance As Salve To The Consumer Bankruptcy Imbroglio, Alena Allen
State Mandated Disability Insurance As Salve To The Consumer Bankruptcy Imbroglio, Alena Allen
BYU Law Review
From Main Street to Wall Street, Americans are hurting. In 2009, over 1.4 million families filed for bankruptcy. Researchers examining the causes of bankruptcy discovered that as many as sixty-two percent of all bankruptcies were precipitated by a medical crisis. Because many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and lack disability insurance, when a medical crisis strikes, bank accounts are quickly depleted by the amalgam of high medical bills and lost wages. Disability insurance provides needed wage replacement when a worker is unable to work due to an illness or injury. This Article presents the case for statemandated disability insurance …

Creating A Self Learning Module For Nurses Caring For Patients Undergoing Angioplasty And Receiving Anticoagulation Therapy, Stacy Incardone
Creating A Self Learning Module For Nurses Caring For Patients Undergoing Angioplasty And Receiving Anticoagulation Therapy, Stacy Incardone
Nursing Masters
Nurses in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (CCL or commonly referred to as the Cath Lab) play a critical role in the delivery of high quality care to their patients. Being knowledgeable and current on evidence based practice is the key to being an effective and efficient nurse. Every year there are annual competencies that nurses must demonstrate to prove that they are capable of performing these patient tasks independently. These annual competencies are institution and unit specific and may include tasks such as demonstration of inserting an intravenous catheter, drawing a blood specimen from an arterial line, and reading and …
Putting Students At The Center Of Legal Education: How An Emphasis On Outcome Measures In The Aba Standards For Approval Of Law Schools Might Transform The Educational Experience Of Law Students, Janet W. Fisher
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Legal education has been notably absent from the assessment movement that has been underway in American higher education for over twenty-five years. Accreditors of virtually every other area of professional education in the United States have adopted assessment of educational outcomes as part of their accreditation process. Legal education is poised to join this movement as the American Bar Association considers revisions to its Standards for Approval of Law Schools that would emphasize educational outcomes.
This Article explores how the assessment of educational outcomes might be implemented in legal education at the institutional, programmatic and course levels. The Article focuses …
Fill Material Pollution Under The Clean Water Act: A Need For Legislative Change, Kory R. Watson
Fill Material Pollution Under The Clean Water Act: A Need For Legislative Change, Kory R. Watson
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The Clean Water Act was implemented to restore and maintain the Nation’s waters. The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System is the principal permitting scheme under the Clean Water Act that is designated to achieve that objective. In the wake of ambiguous regulations on fill material, a loophole in the Clean Water Act has arisen. Currently, an entity can apply for a fill permit to discharge waste normally regulated under the Nation Pollutant Discharge Elimination System if the discharge is composed of a sufficiently high concentration of solids. This Comment discusses the regulations on fill permitting and the cases interpreting them. …
Anesthesia Implications For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Jessica Bratrud
Anesthesia Implications For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Jessica Bratrud
Theses and Dissertations
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects 33% of the population. Eighty percent of those are undiagnosed (Downey, 2011). This number is expected to grow as our population gets older and more obese. Forty one million surgical procedures are performed in the United States each year, so this does affect the practice of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist’s (CRNA). OSA can lead to an array of complications including cardiac arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure, myocardial ischemia, cerebrovascular insufficiency, intracranial hypertension, gastroesophageal reflux disease, difficult intubation, and unanticipated admissions to the ICU. It is estimated that the average life span of …

Analysis Of Leo Radiation Environment And Its Effects On Spacecraft's Critical Electronic Devices, Luz Maria Martines Sierra
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Spacecraft, space stations, satellites and astronauts are exposed to an increased level of radiation when in space, and it is important to evaluate the risks associated with extended radiation exposures in missions and space travel in general. The thesis focuses on the LEO radiation environment and how the particles in it interact with materials. Using existing empirical models, the exposed dosage due to the LEO space environment radiation sources, as a function of orbital altitude, orbital inclination and duration is studied. The physical processes that can result in failures and long term degradations of electronic devices due to solar radiation, …
What Is Appealing? Sex And Racial Differences In Perceptions Of The Physical Attractiveness Of Women, Rachel Sewell
What Is Appealing? Sex And Racial Differences In Perceptions Of The Physical Attractiveness Of Women, Rachel Sewell
HIM 1990-2015
In today's society a beauty ideal exists in America, which attempts to define female beauty as fitting into a certain mold. Certain characteristics have been deemed the most attractive when it comes to female physical attractiveness, and an ideal image of beauty has been presented by the media. This research focuses on whether or not everyone buys into that beauty ideal, and examines the impact that a person's sex and race has on the physical characteristics which that individual defines as the most appealing. Surveys were administered to 300 UCF students age 18-35. Participants were asked about ten different physical …
Social Learning And General Strain Theories' Relationship With Prescription Stimulant Misuse For Academic Purposes Among College Students, Julianne Ong
HIM 1990-2015
The instrumental misuse of prescription stimulants as "study drugs", particularly by college students, is a serious issue that needs to be further investigated. Using data from a sample of 549 University of Central Florida Orlando students, the current study tested the relationship between prescription stimulant misuse and social learning theory, as well as general strain theory. Approximately 17% of participants reported misusing prescription stimulants for academic purposes at least once in the past year. Findings show support for social learning theory; the number of friends who use prescription stimulants and the individual's attitudes about the effectiveness of the drugs are …
The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Cognitive Symptoms Of Depression, Katy Manganella
The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Cognitive Symptoms Of Depression, Katy Manganella
Psychology and Counseling Theses
Existing research on exercise habits typically focuses on the physical health benefits. However, this research tends to neglect the potential psychological benefits of exercise. The present research adopts a different perspective by investigating the relationship between exercise and different symptom types of depression. By establishing the amount of physical activity participants consider to constitute exercising on a regular basis, participants were separated into self-reported high and low-exercise groups and completed the Zung-Self Rating Depression Scale. By employing a factor analysis of the Zung SDS, the results were analyzed assessing each symptom type of depression: Cognitive, affective, and somatic. Results suggest …
Impact Of Social Capital On Employment And Marriage Among Low Income Single Mothers, Jennifer A. Johnson, Julie A. Honnold, Perry Threlfall
Impact Of Social Capital On Employment And Marriage Among Low Income Single Mothers, Jennifer A. Johnson, Julie A. Honnold, Perry Threlfall
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA, P. L. 104-93) called primarily on women to achieve two goals: work and/or marriage. For low income single mothers with limited access to capital, the PRWORA presents a quagmire in that the public safety nets previously guaranteed by the policies of the New Deal were abruptly supplanted by policies with obligations that require various forms of capital. Using longitudinal data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing dataset, we examine the impact of social capital on the chances of marriage and employment among single, unemployed mothers. We find …
Emergency Room Use By Undocumented Mexican Immigrants, Ayse Akincigil, Raymond Sanchez Mayers, Fontaine H. Fulghum
Emergency Room Use By Undocumented Mexican Immigrants, Ayse Akincigil, Raymond Sanchez Mayers, Fontaine H. Fulghum
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This study examined emergency room use by undocumented Mexican immigrants and their sources of health care information. Thirty-eight percent of the respondents reported that they would use a hospital emergency room (ER) for primary medical care. ER use rates declined with time spent in the United States. Emergency room use rates varied significantly by region. Respondents receiving information from a church reported less ER use, compared to all others; respondents receiving information from U.S. newspapers reported higher ER use rates. Lack of health care access for undocumented immigrants remains a public health issue as well as a social justice concern.

Health Service Access For Rural People Living With Hiv/Aids In China: A Critical Evaluation, Xiying Wang, Xiulan Zhang, Yuebin Xu, Yurong Zhang
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The increasingly serious HIV/AIDS epidemic creates a significant burden for the public health system; however, little attention has been paid to the issue of health service access in rural China. Based on a qualitative study of 34 Chinese rural People Living with HIVIAIDS (PLWHA) and 13 health providers, this study fills a gap by examining health service access from both the demand and supply-side. Utilizing access theory, this study explores the availability, affordability and acceptability of health services in rural China. Moreover, this study focuses on access barriers and institutional obstacles that PLWHA meet during their illness and considers the …
