Baby Boomers At Work: Growing Older And Working More, Eve M. Brank
Baby Boomers At Work: Growing Older And Working More, Eve M. Brank
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
In the current chapter, I will first detail the legal framework for workplace age discrimination and court case examples that have largely mirrored race and gender discrimination law. Next, I will discuss the psychological research that details the consequences of age discrimination with a particular focus on the combined effects of stereotype assimilation and notions of deservingness of respect. Last, I will suggest that until we know the causes of age discrimination, we cannot legitimately address its consequences the same way we have addressed other forms of discrimination. Specifically, I will argue that legislating against age discrimination is inherently different …

Trends In Primary Care Specialization Among Physicians And Non-Physician Clinicians, 1989-2009, Joseph Rojas
Trends In Primary Care Specialization Among Physicians And Non-Physician Clinicians, 1989-2009, Joseph Rojas
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
An overwhelming body of health policy literature points to an impending shortage of health care providers in the United States, with special emphasis on a growing shortage of primary care providers. As such literature and similar claims made in the mass media influence political debate and government policy, it becomes necessary to determine whether the assumptions on which these predictions are based are, in fact, valid. The purpose of this study is to examine changes in primary care practice among allopathic (MD) and osteopathic physicians (DO), physician assistants (PA), and nurse practitioners (NP) over the past 20 years, specifically, how …

This study assessed the reliability of the interRAI Community Health Assessment (interRAI CHA) and Deafblind Supplement (DbS). The interRAI CHA and DbS represents a multidimensional, standardized assessment instrument for use with adults (18 and older) who are deafblind. The interrater reliability of the instrument was tested through the completion of dual assessments with 44 individuals who were deafblind in the province of Ontario, Canada. Overall, nearly 50% of items had a kappa value of at least 0.60, indicating fair to substantial agreement for these items. Several items related to psychosocial well-being, mood, and sense of involvement had kappa scores of …

Director's Editorials from Age in Action
With age we become more and more like ourselves. This would mean millions and millions of individual Baby Boomers, each with his or her own characteristics and life trajectory. Stereotyping would, therefore, be wrong, but it is happening.

Skin Blood Flow Response To 2-Hour Repositioning In The Long-Term Care Residents: A Pilot Study, Vivian K. Wong
Faculty Publications
PURPOSE: The purpose of this noninvasive pilot study was to examine the changes in transcutaneous oxygen (tcO2), skin temperature, and hyperemic response in the heels, sacrum, and trochanters in a 2-hour loading-unloading condition in nursing home residents who are positioned in supine and lateral positions. DESIGN: A 1-group, prospective, repeated-measures design was used. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Nine subjects (5 males, 4 females) with a mean age of 85.3 ± 10.86 years (mean ± SD) who required help in turning and positioning at a skilled nursing facility participated in the study. METHODS: Oxygen and temperature sensors were placed on the heels, …
Decisional Strategy Determines Whether Frame Influences Treatment Preferences For Medical Decisions, Erin L. Woodhead, E. B. Lynch, B. A. Edelstein
Decisional Strategy Determines Whether Frame Influences Treatment Preferences For Medical Decisions, Erin L. Woodhead, E. B. Lynch, B. A. Edelstein
Faculty Publications
Decision makers are influenced by the frame of information such that preferences vary depending on whether survival or mortality data are presented. Research is inconsistent as to whether and how age impacts framing effects. This paper presents two studies that used qualitative analyses of think-aloud protocols to understand how the type of information used in the decision making process varies by frame and age. In Study 1, 40 older adults, age 65 to 89, and 40 younger adults, age 18 to 24, responded to a hypothetical lung cancer scenario in a within-subject design. Participants received both a survival and mortality …
