4-H Membership Recruitment/Retention Problems: A Meta-Analysis Of Possible Causes And Solutions, Lynndell Newby, Jeff Sallee Dec 2011

4-H Membership Recruitment/Retention Problems: A Meta-Analysis Of Possible Causes And Solutions, Lynndell Newby, Jeff Sallee

Journal of Youth Development

As the largest youth organization in the United States, the opportunity for 4-H to be a positive influence on America’s youth has never been greater. 4-H not only has a mandate to serve the needs and interests of young people today, but to provide a life experience that will enrich their lives and enable them to succeed in whatever path they so choose. 4-H has struggled with recruitment and member retention of certain age groups, especially teenage members. Researchers have sought to determine why youth do not join or drop out of 4-H. This article reviews that literature and summarizes …

Teachers' Perception Of Computer Use And Technical Support In A Rural Virginia School Division: A Case Study, Rodney Berry Dec 2011

Teachers' Perception Of Computer Use And Technical Support In A Rural Virginia School Division: A Case Study, Rodney Berry

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher perceptions of computer-based technology and technology support provided by a rural school division; the extent of teachers’ self reported computer skills, comfort levels, perception of obstacles; and the amount of support, time, and training available to them to accomplish the integration during the course of instruction. This research was conducted during the 2010-2011 school term as a case study of a small rural K-12 school division in southern Virginia, consisting of teachers from each core curriculum from each of the three schools, selected deliberately. The study was divided into three phases: …

Delineating Europe's Cultural Regions: Population Structure And Surname Clustering, James Cheshire, Pablo Mateos, Paul A. Longley Dec 2011

Delineating Europe's Cultural Regions: Population Structure And Surname Clustering, James Cheshire, Pablo Mateos, Paul A. Longley

Human Biology

Surnames (family names) show distinctive geographical patterning and in many disciplines remain an underutilized source of information about population origins, migration and identity. This paper investigates the geographical structure of surnames, using a unique individual level database assembled from registers and telephone directories from 16 European countries. We develop a novel combination of methods for exhaustively analyzing this multinational data set, based upon the Lasker Distance, consensus clustering and multidimensional scaling. Our analysis is both data rich and computationally intensive, entailing as it does the aggregation, clustering and mapping of 8 million surnames collected from 152 million individuals. The resulting …

The Evolution Of Sensory Divergence In The Context Of Limited Gene Flow In The Bumblebee Bat, Sebastian J. Puechmaille, Meriadeg Ar Gouilh Dec 2011

The Evolution Of Sensory Divergence In The Context Of Limited Gene Flow In The Bumblebee Bat, Sebastian J. Puechmaille, Meriadeg Ar Gouilh

KIP Articles

The sensory drive theory of speciation predicts that populations of the same species inhabiting different environments can differ in sensory traits, and that this sensory difference can ultimately drive speciation. However, even in the best-known examples of sensory ecology driven speciation, it is uncertain whether the variation in sensory traits is the cause or the consequence of a reduction in levels of gene flow. Here we show strong genetic differentiation, no gene flow and large echolocation differences between the allopatric Myanmar and Thai populations of the world's smallest mammal, Craseonycteris thonglongyai, and suggest that geographic isolation most likely preceded sensory …

Evaluating The Success Of Benefit Fraud And Compliance Act In Affecting Wages And Offers For Seven Common H1b Occupations In Virginia, 2002-2010, Khalafala Alsadig

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the role of the Benefits Fraud and Compliance Act (BFCA) in affecting H1B hiring policy in the state of Virginia, as it pertained to seven computer science-related occupations. By employing an independent samples t-test approach, it was discovered that there was a statistically significant difference in H1B actual wages, proposed wages, and per-employer offers before and after BFCA.

Devastated Utopias, Or How To Leave A Legacy: Communist Art & Personality Cults In 20th Century Russia, China And Cambodia, Natalie Ruth Koho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The rise of Marxist regimes altered the stylistic course and purpose of art. Although a new style, Socialist Realism, was formed to reflect communism's visual intentions, this style borrowed and adapted older artistic traditions to increase the reception and understanding of new communist ideologies. The artistic blend of old and new also reflected a trend within communist leadership; Stalin and Mao particularly came to resemble powerful monarchs of the previous imperial eras. Although greatly influenced by Maoist thought, the Khmer Rouge communist regime contrasts both the Chinese and Soviet model by producing an extremely low amount of art and shrouding …

Social Capital In Senegal: Bane Or Boom?, Laura Livesay Dec 2011

Social Capital In Senegal: Bane Or Boom?, Laura Livesay

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

In Senegal, at first glance, it appears that one’s social capital allows the individual to be able to survive, but not thrive. Social capital in Senegal appears to hinder local economic development. For my Capstone, I would like to focus more on what social capital means in Senegal, looking at both the benefits and drawbacks of its’ affect on local economic development. I will be focusing my research within my site, Dahra, population 40,000, and drawing upon case studies as I begin work. I will also be looking at the role of non-governmental organizations (specifically Peace Corps) in generating social …

Water Borne Diseases: A Cry Of A Trapped Community, Passmore Mudundulu

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

The purpose of this study was to understand the problem of attaining safe and clean water that has contributed to high incidence of water borne diseases and to investigate its effects on the residents of Chawama Township, Lusaka, Zambia. A survey was used to collect data from 400 male and female participants to determine their source, treatment and storage of water; sanitary facilities; attitude, experience and knowledge of waterborne diseases. Putting Their Eggs In India’S Basket: What Vertical Integration, Church’S Chicken, And Globalization Mean To Increasing Chicken Consumption In India, Scott E. Basford

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

India has the second largest population in the world and a rapidly growing economy, yet it lags far behind the world average in chicken meat consumption. Nonetheless, rates are increasing briskly and are expected to double within five years. Understanding the factors that contribute to this rise can provide broader insight into political, economic and social developments in Indian society. This paper reviews current and projected levels of chicken consumption across India through an investigation of current literatures which assert that a cultural dietary aversion to red meat, rising incomes, increased urbanization, lower consumer cost, and, most importantly, vertically integrated …

Asset Gathering By Hedge Fund Firms, Melvyn Teo Dec 2011

Asset Gathering By Hedge Fund Firms, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

We explore agency issues within hedge fund firms. We find that firms that launch many funds tend to underperform other firms by between 3 to 5 percent per year after adjusting for risk. These findings are strongest for firms offering funds that pursue many distinct strategies, invest in a variety of geographical regions, locate in a gamut of countries, and offer different base currencies. Our results allow fund investors to distinguish, ex-ante, firms that focus on delivering alpha from those that focus on gathering assets.
