Malawi: Classroom Construction, Solar Water Pump, And Rocket Stove, Ryan Arling, Kelli Schimmoelller, Mark Abram
ETHOS Technical Reports
For a ten week period, Ryan Arling, Mark Abram, and Kelli Schimmoeller worked on various projects in Malawi, Africa. The main project was the design and construction of a classroom building for Bawa Orphan Care Centre using local materials and labor. The school project relied upon the very limited availability of materials in a developing country. The project was completed, except for the iron sheets of the roof, which will be installed when funding becomes available.
A second project involved the diagnosis of an existing solar-powered water pump system that once pumped water to the hilltop of Sangilo Village, including …

Nicaragua: Solar Autoclave For Medical Supplies, Jason Roland, Joseph Schambach
ETHOS Technical Reports
The ETHOS Nicaragua team of summer 2011 continued work on a solar autoclave started by a non-profit group called Salud del Sol in 2008. The technology aims to harness solar energy in the form of heat and pressure high enough to sterilize medical instruments at clinics in rural Nicaragua that may or may not have electricity. After a few summers of attempting to use the solar cookers already in use, new prototypes were tested and a particular design has the potential to be produced in country. The final design uses a reflector of an array of small mirrors that concentrates …

Guatemala: Water Purification And Related Projects, Jennifer Dodaro, Claire Ellerhorst, Dan Kemlage
ETHOS Technical Reports
The engineering team travelled to the small town of Comitancillo, Guatemala for the summer to work with the local organization AMMID for community improvements. The major projects of the team included development of a water filtration project using ceramic filters, water deposit construction, and attempts to develop an existing design for a manual, low-tech PVC water pump. After much research, it is still undetermined whether or not a water filtration project is feasible – more groundwork needs to be done regarding collection and distribution of project funds, organization of materials and other resources needed for filter fabrication, and overall business …

Brazil: Solar Cookers And Pv In Amazon Rainforest, Phil Clauda, Michael Zimmerman
ETHOS Technical Reports
During the summer of 2011 two University of Dayton engineering students lived in Porto De Moz, Para, Brazil. This community is located on the Xingu River in the Amazon Rainforest. An organization called the Xingu Mission worked with the students to identify and execute an engineering based project to bring appropriate technology to the region. A survey of the region’s socio-economic condition suggested that building solar ovens could be a viable cost savings project for people in the region. A solar oven was prototyped using local materials and tested for its ability to heat up food. The solar oven reached …

Bolivia: Oil Extraction, Rocket Stove, And Wood Dryer, Monica Guisfredi, Chelsea Miko, Charles Weikert
ETHOS Technical Reports
Monica Guisfredi, Chelsea Miko, and Charles Weikert worked on appropriate technologies at the research company Proleña in La Paz, Bolivia, for ten weeks this summer through the Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities for Service-learning (ETHOS) program at the University of Dayton (UD).
Monica investigated past and current processes of essential oil extraction from orange peels. After much experimentation with cold press systems, distillation systems, and solvent extraction, an appropriate small scale distillation setup was designed and built that was technologically feasible and sustainable for La Paz, Bolivia.
Chelsea worked on the prototyping of a new design for a rocket stove …

Interventions For The Treatment Of Oral And Oropharyngeal Cancers: Surgical Treatment., A Bessell, A-M Glenny, S Furness, Je Clarkson, R Oliver, Di Conway, M Macluskey, S Pavitt, P Sloan, Hv Worthington
School of Psychology
BACKGROUND: Surgery is an important part of the management of oral cavity cancer with regard to both the removal of the primary tumour and removal of lymph nodes in the neck. Surgery is less frequently used in oropharyngeal cancer. Surgery alone may be treatment for early stage disease or surgery may be used in combination with radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy/biotherapy. There is variation in the recommended timing and extent of surgery in the overall treatment regimens of people with these cancers. OBJECTIVES: To determine which surgical treatment modalities for oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers result in increased overall survival, disease …

Identity, Nationalism And Cultural Heritage Under Siege: The Case Of Pomaks (Bulgarian-Speaking Muslims) In Bulgaria, Fatme M. Myuhtar-May
Student Theses and Dissertations
This research explores selected cultural traditions and histories associated with the Pomaks, a community inhabiting the Rhodope Mountains of southwestern Bulgaria. They speak Bulgarian as a mother tongue, but profess Islam as their religion unlike the country's Orthodox Christian majority. Based on this linguistic unity, the Pomaks have been subjected to recurring forced assimilation since Bulgaria's independence from Ottoman rule in 1878. Today, taking advantage of Bulgaria's democratic rule, they are beginning to assert a heritage of their own making. Still, remnants of entrenched totalitarian mentality in the official cultural domain prevent any formal undertaking to that effect. With the …

Common Ground: Addressing Attrition Across Diverse Institutions In Higher Education, Rebecca L. Jobe, Jim Lenio
Higher Learning Research Communications
Student attrition is an ongoing concern in American higher education, where institutions are being increasingly held accountable for the success of the students they admit. While differences across diverse institutions exist, research suggests that there are many similarities regarding issues related to student persistence and success. In fact, this common ground presents an opportunity for common solutions. The variety of higher education institutions utilizing knowledge gained through institutional initiatives continues to identify new, better ways of serving students. This article sheds light on the known differences between institution types while recognizing the common goals of improving student persistence. The article …

Franz Boas: Geographer/Anthropologist, Ryan B. Anderson
Franz Boas: Geographer/Anthropologist, Ryan B. Anderson
Faculty Publications
The separation between anthropology and geography is a factor of time, and the divergent meanderings of disciplinary histories. As Larry Grossman once argued, “Cultural geographers and anthropologists are like brothers separated in infancy and taught to speak different languages” (1977:126). In many ways, this is quite true. Anthropology and geography actually do share many roots and intellectual origins, even if these connections aren't exactly emphasized in the respective disciplinary histories. Interestingly, if there is one crucial common ancestor that American geographers and anthropologists share, it is none other than one of the icons of North American anthropology: Franz Boas.

Assessing Near-Field Black Carbon Variability Due To Wood Burning And Evaluating Regression Models And Isc Dispersion Modeling, Stella Tan
Master's Theses
PM2.5 variability within the neighborhood scale has not been thoroughly studied for wood burning communities. High variability in near-field PM2.5 concentration may lead to harmful public exposure since monitoring does not occur on that scale. This study measures near-field PM2.5 variability by measuring black carbon (BC), a component of PM2.5, in a 1 km2 area located in Cambria, California. BC and meteorological data (when meteorological instruments were available) were measured over thirteen 12-hour intensive operation periods (IOPs) occurring over the winters of 2009 and 2010. Near-field BC variability was measured to understand the type …

Local Food Systems
Like everyone else in these troubled economic times, Mainers are looking for ways to create jobs that will remain relevant and vital in a global economy, that cannot be outsourced, and that will regenerate rather than exploit our natural resources.
A growing number of people believe that a food system rooted in local farms, fisheries, and food production and distribution enterprises can strengthen Maine’s economy and its communities’ health, thereby increasing revenue and decreasing an expense that is crippling government agencies and individuals alike – healthcare. Business people who want to make a living related to food, and public and …

Getting Noticed: Middle Childhood In Cross-Cultural Perspective, David F. Lancy, M. Annette Grove
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Although rarely named, the majority of societies in the ethnographic record demarcate a period between early childhood and adolescence. Prominent signs of demarcation are: for the first time, pronounced gender separation in fact and in role definition; increased freedom of movement for boys while girls may be bound more tightly to their mothers; and heightened expectations for socially responsible behavior. But, above all, middle childhood is about coming out of the shadows of community life and assuming a distinct, lifetime character. Naming and other rites of passage sometimes acknowledge this transition, but it is, reliably, marked by the assumption or …

Genius Against Copyright: Revisiting Fichte's Proof Of The Illegality Of Reprinting, Mario Biagioli
Genius Against Copyright: Revisiting Fichte's Proof Of The Illegality Of Reprinting, Mario Biagioli
Notre Dame Law Review
The article discusses the dichotomy between idea and expression in copyright law in 2012 by focusing on philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte's 1793 work "Proof of the Unlawfulness of Reprinting: A Rationale and a Parable." The author argues that the legal community has overlooked parts of Fichte's claims and have chosen to only apply personal expression to authors. Originality in authorship is also examined in defining what is and is not covered under U.S. copyright law.
