The Consequences of Living and Dying Without an Estate Plan Most of us expect that tomorrow will be another day like any other. But, as Euripides said, “No one can confidently say that he will still be living tomorrow.” If you don’t have the proper documents for your estate, the court will make decisions for you and your family

Mapping The Residual Landscape: Dilapidation, Abandonment, And Ruin In The Built Environment, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl Oct 2011

Mapping The Residual Landscape: Dilapidation, Abandonment, And Ruin In The Built Environment, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl

Sociology Faculty Publications

This article examines the extent to which spaces are structuring influences on, or targets of, action. Two factors and their interactions are presented: the extent to which a space is 1) maintained and 2) used. As these factors increase in strength, the structural influences of a space increase while agential opportunities are diminished. Conversely, as spaces become dilapidated and abandoned, structural forces are weakened and the potential for creative action heightens. These spaces can be conceptualized as elements of the ‘residual landscape’: spaces left behind by socio-historical processes and practices. Special cases are considered where the factors are inversely related …

Propaganda And The 21st Century Student, Miguel Martinez-Saenz , Provost, Academic Affairs, Tammy M. Proctor Oct 2011

Propaganda And The 21st Century Student, Miguel Martinez-Saenz , Provost, Academic Affairs, Tammy M. Proctor

Administrators/Executives/Staff Scholarship

This short piece provides a way of thinking about the Enlightenment’s legacy and the strength of modern propaganda in order to enable world history teachers to use these themes in their classes, both for teaching history and for helping students to reflect on their own lives. The authors provide background on the ideas of 1930s critical theorists and their impact on the interwar period, then suggest practical ways that world history instructors (in high schools and universities) can use these insights in developing lectures, lesson plans, and assignments for their classrooms.

Winning Percentage And Attendance In The Nhl, Daniel Peters Oct 2011

Winning Percentage And Attendance In The Nhl, Daniel Peters

Sport Management Undergraduate

This research extends the analysis of winning on attendance, looking specifically at its prevalence in the National Hockey League. Data was collected from 2005-2006 through the 2010-2011 season for the each of the league’s 30 teams. Each club’s winning percentage at the midway point of each year was noted, and attendance at each of the remaining home games was analyzed. Statistical analysis revealed that the only season in which there was a significant relationship between midpoint winning percentage and second half attendance was 2010-2011. This study also explored patterns of attendance across the league over this six-year span.

Nutrient And Fecal Microbe Assessment Of The Water Quality Of Tates Creek, Madison County, Kentucky, Kristopher Carroll Oct 2011

Nutrient And Fecal Microbe Assessment Of The Water Quality Of Tates Creek, Madison County, Kentucky, Kristopher Carroll

Geosciences Undergraduate Theses

Tates Creek is a significant tributary to the Kentucky River that has shown high levels of microbial and nutrient pollution. We sampled the waters of Tates Creek comprehensively by occupying 25 stations along its 13-mile length, collecting stream water at the confluence of major tributaries from its headwaters to the Kentucky River. Samples were collected four times between May and August 2011 during dry periods as well as immediately after a rainfall event. We measured ammonium (NH₄⁺), nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO4-) concentrations using colorimetry. Microbial samples were measured for total coliform and Escherichia coli using …

Examining The Circular Relationship Between The Heroin Trade In Afghanistan And Afghan Insurgency Funding, Edward J. Kljunich Oct 2011

Examining The Circular Relationship Between The Heroin Trade In Afghanistan And Afghan Insurgency Funding, Edward J. Kljunich

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The heroin trade is a vital part of the Afghan economy. The heroin trade in Afghanistan has represented 40% to 50% of the country's entire gross domestic product for the past 30 years. The aim of this study was to examine the heroin trade as a circular circuit. Disrupt or break the circuit and the heroin trade comes to a halt. A disruption in the drug trade is also a disruption for the insurgency since the majority of the insurgency's funding is generated by the heroin trade. Historically, there have been times when neighboring borders were closed, poppy crops failed, …

Tibetan Refugees As Objects Of Development. Indian Development Philosophy And Refugee Resistance In The Establishment Of Lukzung Samdrupling, The First Tibetan Refugee Settlement In India, Jan Magnusson

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The paper looks at the development philosophy behind the establishment of the Lukzum Samdrupling, the first Tibetan refugee settlement in India and how it was received by the refugees. After reviewing Chinese development concepts in the 1950’s and 1960’s with an emphasis on Tibet, the paper explores the central concepts of Indian development philosophy at that time, such as cooperative, scientific farming and modern family planning, and how they were implemented in the design of Lukzum Samdrupling. Based on documents in the old settlement files the impact of various development schemes as well as resistance among the refugees are also …

Laws And Regulations Impacting The Enclosure Movement On The Tibetan Plateau Of China, Kenneth Bauer, Yonten Nyima Oct 2011

Laws And Regulations Impacting The Enclosure Movement On The Tibetan Plateau Of China, Kenneth Bauer, Yonten Nyima

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

There are few comprehensive surveys addressing the evolution of China’s grassland policies, particularly with respect to fencing. As a necessary prologue to such an inquiry, this paper presents the national-level laws and regulations that have structured contemporary property regimes and affected the rate and extent of the enclosure movement in pastoral western China, with a focus on Tibetan areas. Based on this review of the legal and political framework of enclosure on the Tibetan Plateau, I will argue that the intent and sequencing of development policies in pastoral areas has been based on the overriding logic of modernization, privatization, and …

"Not Found In Tibetan Society": Culture, Childbirth, And A Politics Of Life On The Roof Of The World, Sienna R. Craig

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This article explores the work of culture and politics in the context of health-development interventions. Specifically, I discuss a maternal-child health project that was conceived and executed in the Tibet Autonomous Region, China, and the place of engaged medical anthropology therein. This work takes inspiration from Pigg's (1997) insights about the ways health-development programs can adopt specific interpretive lenses that "create" categories of being and experience such as "Traditional Birth Attendants" (TBAs). This article illustrates the ways such categories circulate to serve the needs of governmental and non-governmental organizations, and, in the process, how they run the risk of essentializing …

The purpose of this Independent Research Project is to study the geology of the Gokyo Ri Trek and record it in the form of a publishable, trailside guidebook. This guidebook will not only enhance trekkers’ academic experience with enjoyable, interesting facts about Gokyo’s geology, but will also inform them of the natural hazards all around. From glacial lakes and high mountain peaks to precarious scree slopes and towering ice falls, the geology of Sagarmatha National Park offers more than just rocks and snow. With these natural, yet highly unpredictable wonders and the tourists they attract also comes the power to …

Fabulating Romania: Review Of Filip Florian’S Little Fingers And Alta Ifland’S Elegy For A Fabulous World, Ania Spyra

English

In 2007 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania launched a public image campaign in an effort to create a new brand for the country, a brand that would build a positive image, rather than only counteract – defensively – negative stereotypes. An advertising agency created the new brand by merging the words fabulous and spirit into “fabulouspirit” – a word, which ended up sounding better in Romanian than it does in English even though it was intended for an Anglophone audience. The campaign encountered so much criticism that despite the plans to implement it over several years, the word …

Local Solutions For A Global Problem: The Role Of Ngos In Maximizing The Efficacy Of Local Government Sanitation Efforts In Rural Maharashtra, Jorge Aceves Oct 2011

Local Solutions For A Global Problem: The Role Of Ngos In Maximizing The Efficacy Of Local Government Sanitation Efforts In Rural Maharashtra, Jorge Aceves

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This independent study project looks at the topic of sanitation within rural Maharashtra. Although the Government of India, through the state governments, has initiated nationwide campaigns against poor sanitation and waterborne illnesses, these programmes do not reach all communities or find significant success in improving sanitation. Recent revisions of these sanitations programs have shifted their focus from a centralized supply-driven approach to a localized demand-driven approach, yet the system requires more work to become fully functional. In some areas, non-government organizations, such as the Comprehensive Rural Help Project (CRHP), have stepped up to bridge the gap between the available government …

Portraits Of The Land: Environmentalism And Contemporary Art In Mongolia, Sarah Morgan Oct 2011

Portraits Of The Land: Environmentalism And Contemporary Art In Mongolia, Sarah Morgan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Environmental concerns are globally relevant, but in Mongolia they hold special importance. Not only does Mongolia contain an unusual amount of pristine wilderness, but Mongolian history and culture are also deeply rooted in a close bond with the land. Now, increased development and globalization are placing new pressures on environmental systems. In response to these pressures, Mongolians artists are joining a national (and global) conversation about the interactions between art, environment, cultural heritage, and activism.

This study explores the sources of inspiration and motivation for these artists. Through this research, I hope to bring to light the role of the …

Pulling The Cash From Cashmere: Reviving Nepal's Pashmina, Corinne Prevot Oct 2011

Pulling The Cash From Cashmere: Reviving Nepal's Pashmina, Corinne Prevot

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study is an in depth examination of the dynamics behind the Nepali Pashmina industry. Since its boom in 2000, Nepal’s once-number-one industry has faced a stagnant lull. Driven by the Nepali Pashmina Industries Association (NPIA), the industry continues to strive to overcome obstacles posed by the vagaries of globalization and changing economies worldwide. Considering the insurmountable level of capital required for the industry’s necessary industrial development to become a key competitor, perhaps, as a leading export industry, pashmina is no longer viable. This research concludes that as long as high-quality genuine Pashmina continues to be in demand, Nepali Pashmina …
