Writing Next To The West: A Spatial Consideration Of Women In The American West, Elizabeth Anne Boeheim Jan 2011

Writing Next To The West: A Spatial Consideration Of Women In The American West, Elizabeth Anne Boeheim

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Mary Clearman Blew and Judy Blunt are contemporary women writers of the American West. Both women grew up on ranches in Montana but left in adulthood. Despite leaving, each woman maintains significant intellectual and emotional connections to the land and culture of her youth in her writing. Blew's memoir All But the Waltz and Blunt’s memoir Breaking Clean reveal a friction between dependency on the land and necessary distancing from it that presents the opportunity to employ geographical analysis to the ways in which place figures into the production of identity and of these texts. In this paper, I seek …

Psychosocial Effects On Academic Performance, Aria Zhalet Higgins

Online Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that academic performance can be affected by many variables, such as parental involvement, family rules, family resources and homework. The present study focuses on these variables and their association with academic performance using 3,932 participants from the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS). Results showed positive associations between Parental Involvement and Family Resources on Homework, which also had a positive association with Academic Performance; Family Rules had a negative association with Homework, which resulted in a negative association with Academic Performance.

Mental Health Services In Appalachia, Miranda Renee Waters Jan 2011

Mental Health Services In Appalachia, Miranda Renee Waters

Online Theses and Dissertations

People from rural areas of the country, such as the Appalachian region of Kentucky, continue to struggle with inadequate mental health services. Past research has identified several barriers for mental health services in rural communities such as lack of mental health providers, lack of transportation, and lack of education. The purpose of this study was to examine the severity of a psychological problem and how it could influence Appalachian and non-Appalachians' preference for type of help. It was hypothesized that people from the Appalachian region would recommend seeing a mental health professional when a problem had reached its highest severity. …

Courting Toyota, Selling Kentucky: Conflict And Relationship Building In The Establishment Of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Of Kentucky, 1984-1989, Eric Shea Bailey

Online Theses and Dissertations

This study is an examination of the social, economic, and governmental factors that surrounded the establishment of Toyota Motor Corporation's first wholly owned automobile plant in the United States. After a lengthy negotiation with several states, the plant was built in Scott County, Kentucky, near the city of Georgetown. The collected and archived correspondence of Governor Martha Layne Collins as well as contemporary media accounts and interviews with Governor Collins, Larry Hayes, Jiro Hashimoto, and Bill Londrigan served as the evidentiary basis for the research for this thesis. Previous interpretations have regarded the establishment of the factory as both a …

The Classification And Assessment Of Vegetation For Monitoring Coastal Sand Dune Succession: The Case Of Tuzla In Adana, Turkey, Hali̇l Çakan, Kemal Tulühan Yilmaz, Hakan Alphan, Yüksel Ünlükaplan

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study aimed to provide an assessment of coastal sand dune vegetation through a number of analyses meant to provide a better understanding of the structure of plant communities and the successional stages of coastal sand dunes in a human-induced coastal landscape, the Seyhan Delta in southern Turkey. Therefore, as a baseline data inventory for monitoring, succession and the community-based classification of sand dune vegetation and human impacts were the major concerns of this study. The zonation of coastal sand dune vegetation was also determined within this scope, providing a contemporary assessment of different successional stages. A total of 96 …

Diversity And Ecology Of Algae In The Algeti National Park As A Part Of The Georgian System Of Protected Areas, Sophia Barinova, Lali Kukhaleishvili, Eibi Nevo, Zurab Janelidze Jan 2011

Diversity And Ecology Of Algae In The Algeti National Park As A Part Of The Georgian System Of Protected Areas, Sophia Barinova, Lali Kukhaleishvili, Eibi Nevo, Zurab Janelidze

Turkish Journal of Botany

Algal communities from the Algeti National Park in eastern Georgia were studied between 2005 and 2008. The algal species diversity comes from 77 algological samples and includes 315 species and infraspecies, which belong to 7 taxonomical divisions. Of these findings, 295 species are reported for the first time in the Algeti National Park and 9 of them are new for Georgia. The most abundant are diatoms, with 220 species. Communities were dominated by Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. (Chlorophyta), Spirogyra sp. (Charophyta), Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère (diatom), and Phormidium autumnale (C.Agardh) R.Trevis. ex Gomont (Cyanobacteria). The index of species diversity per …

Localism And Capital Punishment, Stephen F. Smith Jan 2011

Localism And Capital Punishment, Stephen F. Smith

Journal Articles

Professor Adam Gershowitz presents an interesting proposal to transfer from localities to states the power to enforce the death penalty. In his view, state-level enforcement would result in a more rationally applied death penalty because states would be much more likely to make capital charging decisions based on desert, without the distorting influence of the severe resource constraints applicable to all but the wealthiest of localities. As well conceived as Professor Gershowitz’s proposal is, however, I remain skeptical that statewide enforcement of the death penalty would be preferable to continued local enforcement. First, Professor Gershowitz underestimates the benefits of localism …

See The Mojave!, John Copeland Nagle Jan 2011

See The Mojave!, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

This article examines how the law is being asked to adjudicate disputed sights in the context of the Mojave Desert. The Mojave is the best known and most explored desert in the United States. For many people, though, the Mojave is missing from any list of America’s scenic wonders. The evolution in thinking about the Mojave’s aesthetics takes places in two acts. In the first act, covering the period from the nineteenth century to 1994, what began as a curious voice praising the desert’s scenery developed into a powerful movement that prompted Congress to enact the CDPA. The second act …

An Investigation Of How Elementary School Teachers Make Data-Driven Instructional Decisions In Literacy, Cheryl Carangian Pham Edd Jan 2011

An Investigation Of How Elementary School Teachers Make Data-Driven Instructional Decisions In Literacy, Cheryl Carangian Pham Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed methods phenomenological study was to explore the data-driven instructional decisions that elementary teachers make in literacy. Educators have moved towards a culture of being data-driven, and have declared data use in schools to be significant to school improvement and accountability. Yet, as school districts make great strides in creating a culture of data-driven decision making – collecting, analyzing and interpreting data – little is known about how individual teachers make sense of data and how they use the data to inform instruction. To explore the data-driven instructional decisions made by classroom teachers using literacy assessment …

Effects Of Prescribed Fires On Young Valley Oak Trees At A Research Restoration Site In The Central Valley Of California, K. A. Holmes, Kari E. Veblen, T. P. Young, A. M. Berry Jan 2011

Effects Of Prescribed Fires On Young Valley Oak Trees At A Research Restoration Site In The Central Valley Of California, K. A. Holmes, Kari E. Veblen, T. P. Young, A. M. Berry

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Woodland restoration sites planted with Quercus lobata (valley oak) often have serious invasions of nonnative annual grasses and thistles. Although prescribed fire can effectively control these exotics, restoration managers may be reluctant to use fire if it causes substantial mortality of recently planted saplings. We studied the effects of prescribed fires on the survival and subsequent growth of 5- and 6-year-old valley oak saplings at a research field near Davis, California. One set of blocks was burned in summer 2003 at a time that would control yellow star thistle, a second set of blocks was burned in spring 2004 at …

“Which Is The Wisest Course?”: Political Power And Prophetic Agency In Nineteenth-Century Mormon Rhetoric, Richard Benjamin Crosby Jan 2011

“Which Is The Wisest Course?”: Political Power And Prophetic Agency In Nineteenth-Century Mormon Rhetoric, Richard Benjamin Crosby

Faculty Publications

This article enters the conversation about religion and communication at the crossing of two important but under-traveled paths: prophetic rhetoric and Mormonism. Mormon polygamy has a rich and controversial history that includes a series of public arguments and internal debates over how to navigate the historically radical religion through the political landscape of nineteenth-century mainstream America. Wilford Woodruff, president and prophet of the church when the government compelled the Mormons to stop the practice of polygamy, needed to end “plural marriage” without undermining the vitality of the church’s revelatory claims. I argue that Woodruff’s response breaks the limited rules of …

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

A two-pronged process, AmplifyPDX required managing two parallel and concurrent but mutually informative processes: creation of the Community Assessment Workbook as well as implementation of the Workbook in a particular community. To develop the Workbook, Mosaic Planning Group conducted a literature review, assembled an Advisory Committee and interviewed key informants with expertise on neighborhood planning, community organizing, and the Portland metropolitan region. Finally, in order to develop a user-friendly and effective community assessment workbook, Mosaic Planning Group tested certain elements of the Workbook in the Southeast Portland neighborhoods of Brentwood-Darlington and Woodstock. This project was conducted under the supervision of …

A Grounded Theory Approach To Use Of Differentiated Instruction To Improve Students' Outcomes In Mathematics, Juniace Senecharles Etienne Jan 2011

A Grounded Theory Approach To Use Of Differentiated Instruction To Improve Students' Outcomes In Mathematics, Juniace Senecharles Etienne

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Teachers in a school district in a southeastern state are being challenged to meet the needs of students who have learning disabilities (LDs) and who require an individualized education program with a mathematics goal. The students are in danger of not passing state, district, and classroom mathematics tests, and not all the schools are meeting adequate yearly progress (AYP). Funding from the federal government is denied if a school does not achieve AYP; the school personnel must then complete a school improvement plan. The purpose of this study was to explore which differentiation instructional (DI) practices inclusion teachers were using …

Succinct yet insightful reports are most welcome – especially in our era, distracted as it is by a rising tide of shallow commentary. For those who care about foreign direct investment (FDI), the premier reports are Columbia FDI Perspectives, published every few weeks by the Vale Columbia Center on Sustainable International Investment. Since the first issue (here republished as chapter 2) appeared in November 2008, the Perspectives have adhered to a format of about two pages, authored by a leading expert, on an FDI question of immediate interest. Consequently, there is no better way to keep abreast of changing trends …

From ‘Entrepreneur Of The Self’ To ‘Care Of The Self’: Neo-Liberal Governmentality And Foucault’S Ethics, Andrew Dilts Jan 2011

From ‘Entrepreneur Of The Self’ To ‘Care Of The Self’: Neo-Liberal Governmentality And Foucault’S Ethics, Andrew Dilts

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

In his 1979 lectures, Foucault took particular interest in the reconfiguration of quotidian practices under neo-liberal human capital theory, re-describing all persons as entrepreneurs of the self. By the early 1980s, Foucault had begun to articulate a theory of ethical conduct driven not by the logic of investment, but of artistic development and self-care. This article uses Foucault’s account of human capital as a basis to explore the meaning and limits of Foucault’s final published works and argues for two interrelated genealogical projects focused on the ethics of economic activity.

Negotiated Regulation: The Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board As A Model Regulatory Process, Caroline E. Wellman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Using a comparative framework and based on interviews with the primary actors involved in the debate for and against humane farm animal standards in Ohio, this thesis examines the roles of special and public interest groups, bureaucrats, technocrats, and the public in the rulemaking process of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. This study finds that the creation of the board as a policy solution was likely impossible without the efforts of a policy entrepreneur and a "fixer;" that the board's relevance relies on a problem-setting approach to developing standards that includes a multitude of interests; and that continued public …

Real Time Semantic Analysis Of Streaming Sensor Data, Harshal Kamlesh Patni Jan 2011

Real Time Semantic Analysis Of Streaming Sensor Data, Harshal Kamlesh Patni

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of dynamic information sources - like social, mobile and sensors, has led to ginormous streams of real time data on the web also called, the era of Big Data [1]. Research studies suggest, these dynamic networks have created more data in the last three years than in the entire history of civilization, and this trend will only increase in the coming years [1]. Gigaom article on Big data shows, how the total information generated by these dynamic information sources has completely surpassed the total storage capacity. Thus keeping in mind the problem of ever-increasing data, this thesis focuses …

Placing Agency In Neoliberalism: Contested Citizenship In Spaces Of Migrant Organizing, Joseph Rasmussen Jan 2011

Placing Agency In Neoliberalism: Contested Citizenship In Spaces Of Migrant Organizing, Joseph Rasmussen

Geography Honors Projects

The presence of millions of immigrants without recognition from the federal government presents serious challenges to American democracy and its legitimacy. By analyzing immigration activism in Austin, Texas, this paper will consider how those excluded from formal citizenship seek full membership, or at least its associated rights and protections, and how institutions at a variety of scales responds to these efforts. This activism challenges prevalent notions of what citizenship means, expanding the lines of who deserve rights and protection, and constructs participatory citizenship at the city level rather than relying on the more passive, exclusionary model of federal politics.

Forest Biomass Mapping From Lidar And Radar Synergies, Guoqing Sun, K. Jon Ranson, Z. Guo, Z. Zhang, P. Montesano, D. Kimes

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

The use of lidar and radar instruments to measure forest structure attributes such as height and biomass at global scales is being considered for a future Earth Observation satellite mission, DESDynI (Deformation, Ecosystem Structure, and Dynamics of Ice). Large footprint lidar makes a direct measurement of the heights of scatterers in the illuminated footprint and can yield accurate information about the vertical profile of the canopy within lidar footprint samples. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is known to sense the canopy volume, especially at longer wavelengths and provides image data. Methods for biomass mapping by a combination of lidar sampling and …

This case study examines the broader trends in demographic change experienced by children in the foster care system in Worcester County, Massachusetts by comparing information regarding removal and placement locations of youth in the Y.O.U., Inc. foster care program with 2000 census data describing the poverty levels, household incomes and racial composition of these locations. The findings demonstrate that children were likely to be removed from areas with high levels of poverty and low numbers of non-Hispanic white residents and placed into areas with low levels of poverty and high numbers of non-Hispanic white populations. This demographic analysis is contextualized …
