The Hegemony Of Language - Literary Writing And The Quest For Subjectivity In The Works Of Michel De Montaigne And Charles Ferdinand Ramuz, Carla Bota Vance Jan 2011

The Hegemony Of Language - Literary Writing And The Quest For Subjectivity In The Works Of Michel De Montaigne And Charles Ferdinand Ramuz, Carla Bota Vance

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Starting from the premise that one’s identity is first and foremost construed in language, this dissertation argues that language is the fundamental site of resistance for writers who define themselves through linguistic difference. Recognizing also that language and literary production frequently fall under the control of complex authorities, this thesis examines literature as a site where confrontation is played out aesthetically. Literary writing, in other words, is exposed as a point of intersection between writers whose language draws its sources from a peripheral location and the centers of authority that regulate and dictate what is accepted as artistically and culturally …

Transnational Spaces And Communal Land Tenure In A Caribbean Place: "Barbuda Is For Barbudans", Amy E. Potter Jan 2011

Transnational Spaces And Communal Land Tenure In A Caribbean Place: "Barbuda Is For Barbudans", Amy E. Potter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the last decade, transnational migration research has gained considerable ground in geography. There is still more to be done, however, in order to understand the complex relationship between migrants and the lands they leave behind. The island of Barbuda in the Lesser Antilles is the ideal place to study the larger issues of transnational migration on a smaller scale, particularly research that focuses on both migration and land tenure. Barbudan land tenure is common property, something that was in practice for more than a century and formalized into law in January of 2008. Because of this particular system of …

Large-Scale Influences On Tropical Cyclogenesis For Selected Storms In The 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Jinwoong Yoo Jan 2011

Large-Scale Influences On Tropical Cyclogenesis For Selected Storms In The 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Jinwoong Yoo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Unpreparedness of large and increasing populations to Atlantic tropical cyclones (TCs) in North and Central America often causes a significant percentage of human casualties and economic losses, which results in part from the difficulty of forecasting tropical cyclogenesis (TCG) and changes in TC track and intensity. Although the mechanisms that lead to TCG have been studied extensively, lack of knowledge still exists about the relative importance of the precursor factors responsible for TCG, especially in the Gulf of Mexico/Caribbean basin where no clear genesis mechanism has been identified for TCs. A series of studies in this dissertation examines influences of …

(Be)Coming Home: The Complexity Of Home As Revealed In Young Adult Novels Of Disaster, Charity Elise Cantey Jan 2011

(Be)Coming Home: The Complexity Of Home As Revealed In Young Adult Novels Of Disaster, Charity Elise Cantey

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Inspired by the researcher’s work with five displaced New Orleans teenagers in the months after Hurricane Katrina, this research examined twelve young adult novels in which characters face a loss of or damage to home in the wake of a natural or humanly-caused disaster. The study sought ways in which home is represented in young adult literature of disaster by analyzing passages in which characters discuss, remember, imagine, and rebuild or reestablish home after its damage or loss. A phenomenological approach was used to examine these fictional experiences of home in order to discern their contribution to an understanding of …

Fatalities Due To Hurricane Katrina's Impacts In Louisiana, Ezra Clay-Kelly Boyd Jan 2011

Fatalities Due To Hurricane Katrina's Impacts In Louisiana, Ezra Clay-Kelly Boyd

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a comprehensive analysis of the loss of life in Louisiana associated with Hurricane Katrina and the catastrophic failure of the federal hurricane protection system. While Louisiana officials attribute 1,464 deaths to this disaster, a Louisiana Katrina Victim Database compiled for this dissertation lists 1,575 victims whose death can be linked to circumstances related to the disaster. First, this dissertation presents a comprehensive assessment of the multiple hazards impacting a dynamic population within southeast Louisiana. This is followed by a comprehensive descriptive analysis of victims’ characteristics. Both of these assessments point to an important conclusion: circumstances matter in …

The Attitudes Of African American Students Towards The Study Of Foreign Languages And Cultures, Katrina Watterson Jan 2011

The Attitudes Of African American Students Towards The Study Of Foreign Languages And Cultures, Katrina Watterson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the reasons that African American students participate at lower levels in foreign language programs in terms of taking courses and majoring and minoring in foreign languages. The primary foreign language that it explores is Spanish, and its findings suggest that the introduction of the language devoid of the influence of Afro-diasporic linkages to Spanish culture leads to the topic being taught in abstraction, therefore causing a lack of interest among African American students. As this study shows, a teacher's thinking about cultural and racial difference is often intimately woven into their disciplinary training, and as a result, …

Lavapiés, Madrid As Twenty-First Century Urban Spectacle, Matthew Isaiah Feinberg Jan 2011

Lavapiés, Madrid As Twenty-First Century Urban Spectacle, Matthew Isaiah Feinberg

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Informed by the theories of Henri Lefebvre regarding the production of space and the theories of scale found in current scholarship in Cultural Geography, my methodology analyzes both dramatic texts and theater spaces to investigate how cultural production and capital converge in the “spectacle” of urban space. While employing this term “spectacle” to describe how dramatic texts, theater productions, and modern architecture transform the urban landscape into a metaphoric theater space for the production of local, national, and global identities, this project examines the relationship between theater and urban change in Lavapiés, an iconic, multicultural, and oftenunderserved neighborhood located in …

Cultural Production And Ephemeral Art: Feminicide And The Geography Of Memory In Ciudad Juárez, 1998-2008, Alice Laurel Driver Jan 2011

Cultural Production And Ephemeral Art: Feminicide And The Geography Of Memory In Ciudad Juárez, 1998-2008, Alice Laurel Driver

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation examines representations of feminicide victims in documentary film, novels, non-fiction, art, and graffiti and argues that these images express anxiety about they way women traverse and inhabit the geography of Ciudad Juárez, often giving precedence to the idea of the public female body as hypersexualized. In order to reclaim memory of the victims some cultural producers focus on the testimonial form in which victims’ families and other activists share their stories or construct informal memorials in the city; these remembrances later appear in works of non-fiction, film, and art, as markers of the process of creating and preserving …

Hezbollah Operations In The Tri-Border Area Of South America, Nicholas Kleck Jan 2011

Hezbollah Operations In The Tri-Border Area Of South America, Nicholas Kleck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines Hezbollah's depth of involvement in the illegal activities of the tri-border area of South America. This case study used multiple sources ranging from press releases, government publications, to Latin American Journals. The methodology used was supported by Joe Feagin's imaginary analytical induction, which complemented the wide-berth of sources. This study hypothesizes that Hezbollah is utilizing the tri-border area of South America to generate multiple sources of revenue. This concept is confirmed by this study where Hezbollah's activities were researched in depth. Consideration of this research by American policymakers would aid in the development of tailored strategies for …

Mortgage Foreclosures, Mortgage Morality, And Main Street: What’S Really Happening?, Jennifer M. Smith Jan 2011

Mortgage Foreclosures, Mortgage Morality, And Main Street: What’S Really Happening?, Jennifer M. Smith

Journal Publications

The American economy is in the tank. Millions of citizens are without jobs, overwhelmed with credit card debt, and losing their homes. The brighter side is that as a result, America has finally embraced financial reform, and the unstable economy is stabilizing marriages. Nevertheless, the United States remains in the midst of a housing crisis, and the ending remains uncertain.

There has been a media blitz about the housing crisis and Wall Street - corporate interests, but much less about the actual impact of the housing crisis on Main Street - America's working class people and small business owners. This …

Encontrando La Comida Saludable: Identifying Food Access Barriers For The Adams County, Pennsylvania Latino Community, Gwendolyn D. Brown, Olivia A. Haddad

Student Publications

Overwhelming research indicates that recent national trends in U.S. food systems have led to the increased prevalence of processed foods and associated diet-related diseases. The effects of unhealthy diets have been distributed unevenly across the country’s socioeconomic and ethnic groups. Certain socioeconomic and ethnic groups face greater geographic, financial and cultural barriers to healthy food access. In Adams County, Pennsylvania, Latinos comprise 5.6% of the population, making them the county’s largest minority group, yet little is known about the food access barriers they face. In this study, we used a combination of surveys and focus groups with Latino residents and …

Mapping The Human Right To Water On The Colorado River, Bret C. Birdsong Jan 2011

Mapping The Human Right To Water On The Colorado River, Bret C. Birdsong

Scholarly Works

Colorado River systems-both ecological and legal-are facing a coming crisis. The river snakes its way from the Rocky Mountain crest to the Gulf of California, draining 245,000 square miles encompassing parts of seven of the United States ("U.S.") and two Mexican states. The river and its tributaries provide drinking water for growing population of thirty million in an even larger area because some of its water is diverted to serve out-of-basin demands in both the U.S. and Mexico. Aside from bringing life-sustaining water to people for personal use, it provides irrigation water for some of the most valuable agricultural lands …

A Riverbank Filtration Demonstration Project On The Kali River, Dandeli, Karnataka, India, Pamela Cady

Open Access Master's Theses

A small scale RBF system was installed in a village near the Kali River in the state of Karnataka to evaluate the performance of riverbank filtration (RBF) under the hydrogeological and climatological conditions of southern India. A series of hydraulic and tracer tests were carried out along with periodic biological and geochemical monitoring of various water sources in the study area.

Hydrogen and oxygen isotopes highlight the impact of evaporation and irrigation at nearby rice paddies on the RBF production well. Dissolved silica data used to determine the relative contributions of surface and groundwater indicate that this RBF system derives …

Geographic Distribution And Life History Aspects Of The Freshwater Shrimps, Macrobranchium Ohione And Palaemonetes Kadiakensis (Decapoda: Palaemonidae), In Arkansas, H. W. Robison, C. T. Mcallister

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Two species of shrimps occur in Arkansas; they include the Ohio shrimp, Macrobrachium ohione (Smith) and the Mississippi grass shrimp, Palaemonetes kadiakensis Rathbun. The present survey is based on collections made between 1974 and 2008 with additional supplemental data from museum specimens to document the overall distribution of the 2 species. Our survey found a total of only 42 specimens of M. ohione from 6 localities (2 counties) in Arkansas, all taken from the Mississippi River. Specimens were seined over sandy substrates in 0.6-0.9 m of water without vegetation. A 1914 museum collection of 5 individual M. ohione is the …

16s Rdna Clone Library Analysis Of Soil Bacteria From Three Different Sites In Peninsula Antarctica / Tahereh Yazdani Nia, Tahereh Yazdani Nia

Student Works (2010-2019)

Soil bacterial diversity from three locations on maritime Antarctica was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene clone library construction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) fingerprinting. Soil samples were from near Rothera Research Station in Rothera Point from Adelaide Island, from Viking Valley on north-eastern side of Mars Glacier from Alexander Island, and from Léonie Island on northern Marguerite Bay, Antarctic Peninsula. Five hundred and forty-eight clones were screened by RFLP and representatives of each phylotype were sequenced for identification. The phylotype sequences showed close relationship (i.e. ≥95% similarity) with bacterial divisions Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadetes, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia …

Genetic Diversity Of Plasmodium Falciparum Isolated From Yemen Based On The Genes Of Merozoite Surface Proteins (Msp-1 And Msp-2) / Nazeh Mohammed Al-Abd Ali, Nazeh Mohammed Al-Abd Ali

Student Works (2010-2019)

Malaria is a major health problem causing substantial morbidity and mortality with Plasmodium falciparum being the causative agent of the most severe and deadly form of malaria in humans. In Yemen Malaria is one of the most serious health problems. About 60% of the populations live in areas with malaria transmission. P. falciparum is the predominant species and accounts for more than 90% of malaria cases. Information on the nature and extent of genetic diversity within P. falciparum is essential for understanding the mechanism underlying the pathology of malaria, the acquisition of immunity, the spread of drug resistance and the …

Descartes And Popper On The Foundations Of Knowledge / Mohd Khairul Anam Che Mentri, Che Mentri Mohd Khairul Anam

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study attempts to examine the philosophical experiments of Descartes and of Popper in dealing with the problem of the foundations of knowledge. It analyses and presents their instruments and tools, concepts and methods of thinking that they have developed in their struggle to provide answers to such problems. Apart from presenting those experiments separately, this study also narrates in comparative manner the differences and similarities that can be found in their epistemological principles and methods. Conceptually, I divide the study into three major themes. The first theme deals with the historical dimension. In order to throw light on the …

Anthoethnography: Emerging Research Into The Culture Of Flora, Aesthetic Experience Of Plants, And The Wildflower Tourism Of The Future, John C. Ryan Jan 2011

Anthoethnography: Emerging Research Into The Culture Of Flora, Aesthetic Experience Of Plants, And The Wildflower Tourism Of The Future, John C. Ryan

Research outputs 2011

How does anthoethnography contribute to the development of understandings of aesthetic experiences of wild plants and wildflower tourism? As exemplified by the quintessentially aesthetic industry of wildflower tourism, the culture of flora represents diverse engagements between people and plants. Such complex engagements offer further avenues for research. The critical methodology of anthoethnography has been one such approach to circumscribing the values, practices and rhetoric of wildflower tourism. Interviews have revealed perceptual phenomena such as the orchid and everlasting effects as two counterpoised examples of the differences between visual aesthetic values occurring in the region. For appreciators such as Tinker, botanical …

Everyday Life In The Tourist Zone, Donell J. Holloway, David Holloway Jan 2011

Everyday Life In The Tourist Zone, Donell J. Holloway, David Holloway

Research outputs 2011

This article makes a case for the everyday while on tour and argues that the ability to continue with everyday routines and social relationships, while at the same time moving through and staying in liminal or atypical zones of tourist locales, is a key part of some kinds of tourist experience. Based on ethnographic field research with grey nomads (retirees who take extended tours of Australia in caravans and motorhomes) everyday life while on tour is examined, specifically the overlap and intersection between the out-of-the-ordinary “tourist zone” and the ordinariness of the “everyday zone.”

Cultural Botany: Toward A Model Of Transdisciplinary, Embodied, And Poetic Research Into Plants, John C. Ryan Jan 2011

Cultural Botany: Toward A Model Of Transdisciplinary, Embodied, And Poetic Research Into Plants, John C. Ryan

Research outputs 2011

Since the eighteenth century, the study of plants has reflected an increasingly mechanized and technological view of the natural world that divides the humanities and the natual sciences. In broad terms, this article proposes a context for research into flora through an interrogation of existing literature addressing a rapprochement between ways to knowledge. The natureculture dichotomy, and more specifically the plant-to-human sensory disjunction, follows a parallel course of resolution to the schism between objective (technical, scientific, reductionistic, visual) and subjective (emotive, artistic, relational, multi-sensory) forms of knowledge. The foundations of taxonomic botany, as well as the allied fields of environmental …
