Stakeholders in the educational role of technology include students, faculty members, institutions, and manufacturers. While the benefits of such technologies are still under investigation, the technology landscape offers opportunities to enhance face-to-face and online teaching, including contributions in the understanding of abstract concepts and training in real environments and situations. Barriers to technology use …

Mountains Of Injustice : Social And Environmental Justice In Appalachia, Michele Morrone, Geoffrey L. Buckley Nov 2011

Mountains Of Injustice : Social And Environmental Justice In Appalachia, Michele Morrone, Geoffrey L. Buckley

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Research in environmental justice reveals that low-income and minority neighborhoods in our nation’s cities are often the preferred sites for landfills, power plants, and polluting factories. Those who live in these sacrifice zones are forced to shoulder the burden of harmful environmental effects so that others can prosper. Mountains of Injustice broadens the discussion from the city to the country by focusing on the legacy of disproportionate environmental health impacts on communities in the Appalachian region, where the costs of cheap energy and cheap goods are actually quite high.

Through compelling stories and interviews with people who are fighting for …

Políticas Y Cultura En La Última Argentina Autoritaria: Estado Y Teatro Entre 1976 Y 1983, Leonardo Mangialavori, Miguel Barrientos

Research Papers

Inquisitive Objects: Material Culture And Conversos In Early Modern Ciudad Real, Jessica Weiss Nov 2011

Inquisitive Objects: Material Culture And Conversos In Early Modern Ciudad Real, Jessica Weiss

Research Papers

Between 1483 and 1526, one-hundred and twenty-four trials were conducted by the Spanish Inquisition against conversos in Ciudad Real. The notarial records from these trials contain a multitude of references to material culture, including sculpted artworks, candles, and effigies. This essay analyzes the references to materiality utilized in arraignments, witness testimonies, and verdicts, and then correlates them to broader constructions of cultural identity. These references reveal a pre-modern animistic world view in which objects both shape and are shaped by their participation as active agents in religious ritual.

Anaplasma Phagocytophilum Remodels Its Host Cell-Derived Vacuole Into A Protective Niche By Redecorating The Vacuolar Membrane With Select Rab Gtpases And Bacterial Proteins, Bernice Huang Nov 2011

Anaplasma Phagocytophilum Remodels Its Host Cell-Derived Vacuole Into A Protective Niche By Redecorating The Vacuolar Membrane With Select Rab Gtpases And Bacterial Proteins, Bernice Huang

Theses and Dissertations

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligate intracellular bacterium that infects neutrophils to cause the emerging tick-transmitted disease, human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). Following entry, the pathogen replicates within a host cell-derived vacuole that fails to mature along the endocytic pathway, does not acidify, and does not fuse with lysosomes. Selective fusogenicity is prototypical of many vacuole-adapted pathogens and has been attributed, at least in part, to pathogen modification of the vacuolar inclusion membrane and/or to selective recruitment or exclusion of host trafficking regulators. As a result, the A. phagocytophilum-occupied vacuolar membrane (AVM) provides a unique interface to study the host-pathogen interactions critical …

RELICS is a group of familiar, yet evocative objects, handcrafted in wood. Inspired by first-hand experiences living abroad, each sculpture aims to represent the physical remains and ideologies of past cultures around the world. The work reflects gently on universal themes of cultural persistence and survival, and presents a thoughtful investigation into our current patterns of living. My message is in support of a sustainable future, celebrating diversity, and nurturing nature.

Conservation And Loss Of Ribosomal Rna Gene Sites In Diploid And Polyploid Fragaria (Rosaceae), Bo Liu, Thomas M. Davis Nov 2011

Conservation And Loss Of Ribosomal Rna Gene Sites In Diploid And Polyploid Fragaria (Rosaceae), Bo Liu, Thomas M. Davis

Biological Sciences

The genus Fragaria comprises species at ploidy levels ranging from diploid (2n = 2x = 14) to decaploid (2n = 10x = 70). Fluorescence in situ hybridization with 5S and 25S rDNA probes was performed to gather cytogenetic information that illuminates genomic divergence among different taxa at multiple ploidy levels, as well as to explore the evolution of ribosomal RNA genes during polyploidization in Fragaria.

Asset Poverty In Urban China: A Study Using The 2002 Chinese Household Income Project, Jin Huang, Minchao Jin, Suo Deng, Baorong Guo, Li Zou, Michael Sherraden Nov 2011

Asset Poverty In Urban China: A Study Using The 2002 Chinese Household Income Project, Jin Huang, Minchao Jin, Suo Deng, Baorong Guo, Li Zou, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

Defining asset poverty as insufficiency of assets to satisfy household basic needs for a limited period of time, the study examines asset poverty rates in urban China using the 2002 survey data from the Chinese Household Income Project (CHIP). We find that asset poverty rates in urban China are lower than those of developed countries, in part due to Chinese households’ strong commitment to precautionary savings and the low poverty standards. However, the liquid asset poverty rate is five times that of the income poverty rate in urban China. Notably, the asset-poverty-gap ratio shows that most households in asset poverty …

A Comparison Between Cluster Busting Technique And A Classification Tree Algorithm Of A Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (Modis) Land Cover Map Of Honduras, Samuel Rivera, John H. Lowry, Alexander J. Hernandez, R. Douglas Ramsey, Ricardo Lezama, Miguel A. Velasquez Nov 2011

A Comparison Between Cluster Busting Technique And A Classification Tree Algorithm Of A Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (Modis) Land Cover Map Of Honduras, Samuel Rivera, John H. Lowry, Alexander J. Hernandez, R. Douglas Ramsey, Ricardo Lezama, Miguel A. Velasquez

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

A national land cover map derived from moderate resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS) imagery products was developed for Honduras, Central America. We compared two methods of image classification: a cluster busting (CB) classification technique and a classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm. Field data samples were used to validate the resulting classifications. Inthe classification process, we used: a Google Earth™ sampling scheme, a time series of MODIS's Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and digital elevation data(shuttle radar topography mission, SRTM). The CART classification method provided a more accurate classification (Kappa coefficient, K = 74%, overall model accuracy = 79.6%) while compared to …

Forest disturbances greatly alter the carbon cycle at various spatial and temporal scales. It is critical to understand disturbance regimes and their impacts to better quantify regional and global carbon dynamics. This review of the status and major challenges in representing the impacts of disturbances in modeling the carbon dynamics across North America revealed some major advances and challenges. First, significant advances have been made in representation, scaling, and characterization of disturbances that should be included in regional modeling efforts. Second, there is a need to develop effective and comprehensive process-based procedures and algorithms to quantify the immediate and long-term …
