Colonial Photography Across Empires And Islands, Mark Rice Jan 2011

Colonial Photography Across Empires And Islands, Mark Rice

American Studies Faculty/Staff Publications

When the US acquired its colonies of Puerto Rico and the Philippines in the aftermath of the 1898 war with Spain, those colonies had to be made known to American citizens. Lanny Thompson has described what he calls the “principle narratives” of the different colonies, and the ways that those narratives helped shape political debates about those colonies. Thompson notes that photography played an instrumental role in developing and representing those narratives. “Colonial Photography Across Empires and Islands” discusses the specific uses of photography in the US colonial regimes in the Philippines and Puerto Rico, the two colonies most frequently …

Human and natural forces are rapidly modifying the global distribution and structure of terrestrial ecosystems on which all of life depends, altering the global carbon cycle, affecting our climate now and for the foreseeable future, causing steep reductions in species diversity, and endangering Earth's sustainability. To understand changes and trends in terrestrial ecosystems and their functioning as carbon sources and sinks, and to characterize the impact of their changes on climate, habitat and biodiversity, new space assets are urgently needed to produce high spatial resolution global maps of the three-dimensional (3D) structure of vegetation, its biomass above ground, the carbon …

Mixed-Source Reintroductions Lead To Outbreeding Depression In Second-Generation Descendents Of A Native North American Fish, David D. Huff, Loren M. Miller, Christopher J. Chizinski, Bruce Vondracek Jan 2011

Mixed-Source Reintroductions Lead To Outbreeding Depression In Second-Generation Descendents Of A Native North American Fish, David D. Huff, Loren M. Miller, Christopher J. Chizinski, Bruce Vondracek

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Reintroductions are commonly employed to preserve intraspecific biodiversity in fragmented landscapes. However, reintroduced populations are frequently smaller and more geographically isolated than native populations. Mixing genetically, divergent sources are often proposed to attenuate potentially low genetic diversity in reintroduced populations that may result from small effective population sizes. However, a possible negative tradeoff for mixing sources is outbreeding depression in hybrid offspring. We examined the consequences of mixed-source reintroductions on several fitness surrogates at nine slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus) reintroduction sites in south-east Minnesota. We inferred the relative fitness of each crosstype in the reintroduced populations by comparing …

Candy Land, Brittney Champagne Jan 2011

Candy Land, Brittney Champagne

Theses & ETDs

Sweetness functions as a symbolic prop for human desire. My artwork questions the cost of this desire, troubling what can and should be consumed, while negotiating the environmental and social histories of human desire for sugar. This project generates a subjective history for the strange, perhaps unnatural, commodities that people desire, through which I aim to plant them more firmly into the natural world from which they have been separated by so much plastic, foil, and ornament.

Transfiguration, Carmen Guillen-Casal Jan 2011

Transfiguration, Carmen Guillen-Casal

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the disparities between our ideals of beauty and imperfect bodies, using painting as a vehicle to de-familiarize ourselves with these flaws. Like artists Jenny Saville, John Coplans and Lisa Yuskavage, I hope to diversify views of bodies and confuse the spaces that they define through abstraction. I n doing so, I encourage the viewer to examine expanses of flesh in order to decode the culturally prescribed values which the viewer has been assigned. The subject volunteers a formerly concealed body and in doing so reclaims agency. This agency over their own bodies is garnered where the lines …

Transubstantiation Through Time Peter Paul Rubens's "Triumph Of The Eucharist" Tapestry Series And "The Meeting Of Abraham And Melchizedek", Sarah Schlosser Jan 2011

Transubstantiation Through Time Peter Paul Rubens's "Triumph Of The Eucharist" Tapestry Series And "The Meeting Of Abraham And Melchizedek", Sarah Schlosser

Theses & ETDs

The Old Testament figure of Melchizedek, the priest-king of Salem, was a popular image in religious art from the Early Medieval period to the Rococo. Melchizedeks unique position as both priest and king caused Paul to compare Melchizedek to Christ in his Epistle to the Hebrews, while Melchizedeks offering of bread and wine to the patriarch Abraham in the Book of Genesis was identified by the Early Church Fathers as a prefiguration of the Eucharist. This association with Christ and the Eucharist causes Melchizedek to take an important role in religious art beginning in the Early Medieval period, and his …

The Great Ringling A Cristical Archaeology Of Cad'zan In Sarasota, Florida, Michael Sanderson Jan 2011

The Great Ringling A Cristical Archaeology Of Cad'zan In Sarasota, Florida, Michael Sanderson

Theses & ETDs

Beginning in the 1980s, historical archaeologists began to scrutiny the residential gardens of the North American elite, analyzing how these deliberately-created landscapes were both produced and were the product of their hierarchical, elite-controlled societies. John Ringling's Sarasota estate was part of his larger social action in 1920s America, and this thesis uses archival research and analysis of the landscape to document how Ringling used the estate to create a local identity for Sarasota based on climate, coastline, and culture (meaning the arts and links to Europe). The thesis argues this identity was only partially present before and that Ringling used …

Geometric Geography Harmonizing With The Florida Keys, Lauren Parker Jan 2011

Geometric Geography Harmonizing With The Florida Keys, Lauren Parker

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is comprised of a series of paintings that investigate the landscape of the Florida Keys with an intention to convey ideas about mankinds relationship to nature in the region. Throughout the body of work, non-naturalistic color and graphic brush mark are imposed on naturalistic compositions to create a theme that integrates organic and artificial forms in the landscape scene. This process juxtaposes styles of representation and abstraction, informed by 19th century American landscape painting and 20th century landscape painter Charles Burchfield, respectively. Ideas are symbolized by combining conventions from both periods, similar to the processes of contemporary painters …

A Resource For Harmony An Etunographic Study Of Exhibition, Heritage, And Race At Family Heritage House Museum, Bradenton, Florida, Christina Chavez

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is the product of ethnographic fieldwork spanning from January 2010 to January 2011. The artifacts, exhibits, and events which are a part of Family Heritage House Museum were methodological tools which provided cultural insight into the community-centered African American heritage museum. An analysis of specific artifacts, exhibits, and events illustrate the manner in which exhibition, heritage, and race intersect at Family Heritage House Museum. As an instrument of power exhibition separates the subject from the object turning the intangible and ephemeral responses to culture into a tangible thing. Through this process, the museum constructs heritage for specific social …

Seeing Through The Grid, Sarah Newberry Jan 2011

Seeing Through The Grid, Sarah Newberry

Theses & ETDs

This thesis began as an investigation of three-dimensional space through pattern, repetition, modulation and transmutation of geometric forms. In response to the formalist aesthetic of the modernist grid[1] seen in the works of artists like Piet Mondrian, Sol Lewitt, and Josef Albers, a body of work was actualized. Works have evolved into a further exploration, one in which the aesthetic nature of the grid is subverted and its logical beginnings devolve into consistently warped, imprecise, and affected representations. This thesis utilizes this logical chaos to relate the dynamic qualities of specific spaces, their constant devolution, and the capacity of the …

The Role Of Guanxi In Chinese Economic Transition Firm Networking & Market Autonomy, Chelsea Dye Jan 2011

The Role Of Guanxi In Chinese Economic Transition Firm Networking & Market Autonomy, Chelsea Dye

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the role of guanxi in China's economic transformation. Guanxi is an institutionalized form of social capital in China that has evolved since the time of Confucius. Social capital is lauded as a resource that may help economic actors overcome the uncertainties of economic transition through the use of social networks to share information. When examining the history of China's economic transition since 1979, it is evident that guanxi has had many roles in facilitating cooperation and information sharing among Chinese firms. Yet as the transition progressed, the use of social networks to surmount barriers to entry and …

Bon Voyage? Tourism And Development In The Caribbean The Case Of Barbados, Nicole Whalen Jan 2011

Bon Voyage? Tourism And Development In The Caribbean The Case Of Barbados, Nicole Whalen

Theses & ETDs

International tourism has become a significant economic sector for many developing countries, and its potential to contribute to national development has become the subject of recent development literature. Due to the increased advocacy by international organizations and national governments to adopt tourism as a development strategy, it is important to examine how tourism has affected past development endeavors before prescribing the tourism treatment to other developing countries. This thesis examines the divergent development experience of two Caribbean islandsBarbados and Jamaicato examine how the recent development of mass tourism has affected each islands quest for economic growth and development. It concludes …

"100 Spears Worth 100 Pieces": The Impact Of Ashigaru On Sengoku Jidai, Austin W. Clark Jan 2011

"100 Spears Worth 100 Pieces": The Impact Of Ashigaru On Sengoku Jidai, Austin W. Clark

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

In the year 1545, during the latter half of Japan‘s Sengoku Period or ―Age of Warring States‖, the minor samurai Ukida Naoie was assigned thirty men and a small fief in the province of Bizen. His task was to cultivate and defend this small corner of the province from the ambitious and power-hungry lords and bandits that abounded in the Sengoku Period, but Naoie set his sights higher. Given direct control over his thirty men, a mere garrison force of infantry, he used them to conquer and rule over neighboring fiefs in the province. His reputation and his army grew …

Nature, Domestic Labor, And Moral Community In Susan Fenimore Cooper's Rural Hours And Elinor Wyllys, Richard M. Magee Jan 2011

Nature, Domestic Labor, And Moral Community In Susan Fenimore Cooper's Rural Hours And Elinor Wyllys, Richard M. Magee

English Faculty Publications

Cooper's argument for a domestic ideal situated within a rural setting reinforces the importance of community connections through a shared sense of morality, as well as understanding of the natural world. Community alone—the human connections—never seems to be enough in Cooper's formulation, but must always exist with an awareness of the world outside the narrow confines of one's own domestic sphere. Concern for one's fellow-beings necessitates a concern for the world in which these beings live, and Cooper understands that when any bonds are broken—such as the bonds that connect us to the natural world—other bonds are threatened. Thus, when …

Ecological Design Of Marine Construction For Socio-Economic Benefits: Ecosystem Integration Of A Pipeline In Coral Reef Area, Sylvain Pioch, Philippe Saussola, Kirk Kilfoyle, Richard E. Spieler Jan 2011

Ecological Design Of Marine Construction For Socio-Economic Benefits: Ecosystem Integration Of A Pipeline In Coral Reef Area, Sylvain Pioch, Philippe Saussola, Kirk Kilfoyle, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

It is critical to understand that an ecosystem integration of construction requires a close Engineering/Biology partnership to meet socio-economic benefits in management goals. Biologists are not typically trained or licensed for the requisite engineering involved in construction. Likewise, non-biologists designing habitat often can lead to egregious results. For example, unintentionally constructing the wrong habitat, i.e., refuge for predators in a nursery area, or habitat that facilitates the spread of non-desirable species can increase, rather than ameliorate, the impact of construction. In recent years, Pioch and co-workers (unpublished) developed an alternative to the “classic” engineering approach to marine construction. This new …

An Immigrant, Not A Worker: Depiction Of The 2006 ‘Day Without An Immigrant’ Protests In Printed Media Of The United States, Teal Ruthschild

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

writing about the Day Without an Immigrant (DWI) Protests within the year of the 2006 protests are analyzed in order to understand narratives on labor activism of documented and undocumented immigrants in the United States. DWI protests marked an anticipated ‘turning point' in collective action among immigrant workers in the United States. Content analysis was employed to ascertain the portrayal of the protesters by a variety of print media sources. Both univariate and multivariate procedures utilized find that charged rhetoric of racialized anti-immigrant sentiment is present in most sources regardless of the ‘political leaning' of the press, reaffirming the status …

United States Public Health Resources

Background: Malaria control programs require a detailed understanding of the contemporary spatial distribution of infection risk to efficiently allocate resources. We used model based geostatistics (MBG) techniques to generate a contemporary map of Plasmodium falciparum malaria risk in Indonesia in 2010.

Methods: Plasmodium falciparum Annual Parasite Incidence (PfAPI) data (2006–2008) were used to map limits of P. falciparum transmission. A total of 2,581 community blood surveys of P. falciparum parasite rate (PfPR) were identified (1985–2009). After quality control, 2,516 were included into a national database of age-standardized 2–10 year old PfPR data (PfPR …

United States Public Health Resources

The activity of natural killer cells depends on the balance between activating and inhibitory signals coming from their receptors. Among these are the killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) that recognize specific HLA class I allotypes. Here we characterized KIR genetic diversity and their HLA ligands in the population of Curitiba, Paraná State (n=164), and compared it with other worldwide populations. The distribution of 2DL4 alleles was also analyzed. The Curitiba population did not differ significantly from European and Euro-descendant populations, but as an admixed population showed higher genetic diversity. We found 27 KIR profiles, many of them uncommon in European …

An Introduction To Cyrus* Engineering Leadership Paradigm, Davood Salmani, Ali Taatian Jan 2011

An Introduction To Cyrus* Engineering Leadership Paradigm, Davood Salmani, Ali Taatian

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In this time of dwindling resources, economic uncertainty, climate change, global conflict and both natural and manmade disasters causing massive impact to whole communities and cultures, there is a significant need developing for new leadership, for a new way. The increasing global competition in technology leads to a concept called Engineering Leadership including leadership skills and engineering competencies. They address the “Real Problems facing mankind” like energy security (D. Apelian, 2007, pp. 21-30). Greenhouse effect, the diminishing ozone layer, water and air pollution, the growing desserts, energy related problems along with global economy recession are the issues that seriously challenge …

Patronage Of Educational Broadcasts And Its Effects On Academic Growth Of Students Of Winneba And Apam Senior High Schools In The Central Region Of Ghana., Daniel Yelkpieri, Wilson Esia-Donkoh Kweku, Kwesi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The importance of Mathematics transcends all definitions and the prosperity of any country depends on the volume and quality of Mathematics offered in its school system. Obe (1996) conceptualises Mathematics as the master and servant of most disciplines and thus, a source of enlightenment and understanding of the universe. He further opines that without it, the understanding of national problems would be superficial. Graeber and Weisman (1995) agree that Mathematics helps the individual to understand his/her environment and to give accurate account of the physical phenomena around him/her. To this end, Setidisho (2001) submits that no other subject forms a …

Effective Language Arts Teachers Of Urban African American Middle School Students In The Greater Detroit Area, Lanissa Laura Freeman Jan 2011

Effective Language Arts Teachers Of Urban African American Middle School Students In The Greater Detroit Area, Lanissa Laura Freeman

Wayne State University Dissertations

Teaching in a large urban district has been historically described as a complex task and with the growing number of diverse students, the challenge continues to grow. The challenge is now coupled with major budget shortfalls. Across the nation public schools are struggling to keep the doors open, and provide basic supplies for students and teachers. Despite looming layoffs, closing schools, consolidations, and increased academic demands, there is a group of teachers in every urban district that consistently get results. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the beliefs, backgrounds, and classroom practices effective language arts teachers used …

The Changing Structure Of Beef Production: Stockers, Calf Feds And Yearlings, Tom Brink Jan 2011

The Changing Structure Of Beef Production: Stockers, Calf Feds And Yearlings, Tom Brink

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Beef production is always in a state of flux. Nothing in this business stays the same for very long. The current situation is truly unique compared to anything we have experienced in the past. Demand is growing. Supply is shrinking. Cattle prices are rising and show no sign of stopping, despite reaching record highs this year. Production costs are also increasing. There are some very real opportunities in the cow-calf business and other producer segments. But financial risks exist as well. My belief is that the good outweighs the bad. Cow-calf producers could see some of the best profits during …
