Principals' Perceptions Of The Importance Of Classroom Walkthroughs, Shannon Anne Mcgill Dec 2011

Principals' Perceptions Of The Importance Of Classroom Walkthroughs, Shannon Anne Mcgill

Dissertations

Education reform has required school administrators to become instructional leaders that ensure teacher effectiveness and academic success for all students. Classroom walkthroughs are one way that instructional leaders can accomplish this task. This study examined the level of importance that principals place on the practice of classroom walkthroughs and on specific elements of classroom walkthroughs; it further explored the relationships among perceptions about classroom walkthroughs and student achievement, school performance levels (AYP), and socio-economic status (SES) of the school.

This was a quantitative study that utilized survey methodology, archival data and correlational analyses to identify the relationships among principals‟ perceptions …

Leadership Practices That Promote Increased Student Achievement In Secondary Schools, Billy Ray Jones Dec 2011

Leadership Practices That Promote Increased Student Achievement In Secondary Schools, Billy Ray Jones

Dissertations

The purpose of the following study was to determine the degree to which the perceptions of teachers and school level administrators may differ, and the effects of these perceptions on student achievement as measured at the school level by the school’s accountability score reported in the form of the Quality Distribution Index (QDI). This index ranges from 0 to 300 and is used in the state of Mississippi to assign schools to one of seven accountability labels. Schools may be classified as one of the following depending on their QDI score: star, high performing, successful, academic watch, at risk of …

Dual Enrollment: Breaking The Mold For College Readiness And Persistence In An Urban Charter School, Robert Lemoyne Robinson Dec 2011

Dual Enrollment: Breaking The Mold For College Readiness And Persistence In An Urban Charter School, Robert Lemoyne Robinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In the later part of the twentieth century, the continued growth in high school and college dropout rates led to the development of educational reform measures that would address an education model that was seen as applicable to a disproportionate percentage of the nation’s students, thereby leaving the majority of schools and their students to struggle (Simmons, 2008). Efforts to increase matriculation between secondary and postsecondary institutions must be connected at all levels of education, which is critical to educational reform—worldwide (Zhou, 2008). Due to its ability to increase the rigor of high school curriculum, an increasingly favored measure of …

A Tale Of Two Plantations: The Comparative Development Of The Ensley And Davies Plantations In Shelby County, Tennessee And The Museums That Interpret Them, Emily Rosalind Schwimmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study compares the histories of two plantations in Shelby County, Tennessee - the Ensley Plantation in Southwest Memphis and the Davies Plantation in Bartlett. During broad national transformations such as the Great Migration and suburbanization, proximity to or distance from the City of Memphis strongly influenced divergent land-use, demographic and socio-economic composition, and political and economic resources in each historic plantation area. The historical experiences of each area and its contemporary socio-economic and demographic composition, in turn, influences the way that a museum at each site addresses the past and, particularly, the historical presence of African Americans. The C. …

The purpose of this thesis is to determine the appropriate scale to detect Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense Lour.), an invasive plant species in Shelby Farms Park. To test predictions that accuracy of detection of Chinese Privet varies with the spatial resolution of WorldView-2 satellite imagery. Supervised maximum likelihood classifications are performed upon WorldView-2, 8-band multispectral image mosaics at 2, 4, 6, and 8 meter pixel resolutions. The appropriate scale for detection was selected by performing accuracy assessments of selected land use classes, which were shown to be the least spectrally separable from Chinese Privet, using confusion matrices to report user’s …

Note – Fashioning A New Look In Intellectual Property: Sui Generis Protection For The Innovative Designer, Linna T. Loangkote Dec 2011

Note – Fashioning A New Look In Intellectual Property: Sui Generis Protection For The Innovative Designer, Linna T. Loangkote

UC Law Journal

Fashion design is weaving its way through the fabric of American society by transforming how people think about fashion apparel. The $350 billion fashion industry not only puts the clothes on our backs, but gives individuals an outlet for individual expression as well. More and more, the fashion design process is recognized as a creative process where vision, raw materials, and skill meet to produce fashion apparel that should be worthy of sui generis protection.Current intellectual property regimes fail to adequately equip designers with legal remedies to guard against design piracy, and this affects both innovation and competition. Moreover, even …

Crime Mapping And The Fourth Amendment: Redrawing “High-Crime Areas”, Andrew Guthrie Ferguson Dec 2011

Crime Mapping And The Fourth Amendment: Redrawing “High-Crime Areas”, Andrew Guthrie Ferguson

UC Law Journal

Crime-mapping technology has the potential to reshape Fourth Amendment protections in designated “high-crime areas.” In Illinois v. Wardlow the Supreme Court held that presence in a high-crime area is one of only two factors necessary for creating reasonable suspicion to stop an individual. Since Wardlow, thousands of federal and state cases have used the term “high-crime area,” yet only a handful of courts have considered how to define it. New crime-mapping technologies can now address that definitional problem. Crime-mapping technologies can collect and analyze crime statistics so that police districts can produce almost perfect information about the level, rate, and …

Our Cities And The City: Incompatible Classics?, Carl Abbott Dec 2011

Our Cities And The City: Incompatible Classics?, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

At the end of the 1930s, Americans interested in the fates and futures of their cities had the opportunity to consider two new efforts to summarize urban problems and propose solutions. The first was Our Cities: Their Role in the National Economy, published in 1937 under the auspices of the National Resources Board. The second was The City, a film sponsored by the American Institute of Planners for showing at the New York world's fair in 1939. The report and the film arose out of different analytical traditions, the first from the approach that embedded urban planning within a larger …

The Nubian Complex Of Dhofar, Oman: An African Middle Stone Age Industry In Southern Arabia, Jeffery I. Rose, Vitaly I. Usik, Anthony E. Marks

KIP Articles

Despite the numerous studies proposing early human population expansions from Africa into Arabia during the Late Pleistocene, no archaeological sites have yet been discovered in Arabia that resemble a specific African industry, which would indicate demographic exchange across the Red Sea. Here we report the discovery of a buried site and more than 100 new surface scatters in the Dhofar region of Oman belonging to a regionally-specific African lithic industry - the late Nubian Complex - known previously only from the northeast and Horn of Africa during Marine Isotope Stage 5, ∼128,000 to 74,000 years ago. Two optically stimulated luminescence …

Hearing The Voice Of Faculty: Global Recommendations For Faculty Recognition In Higher Education Institutions, Águeda Benito, Fionna Scott-Milligan

Higher Learning Research Communications

Faculty constitutes one of the most important elements of Higher Education institutions. Their role is key in curriculum development, as well as in guiding students´ learning and driving their engagement, in conducting research and in the overall success of their institutions. This paper presents the results of a number of faculty interviews, and a focus group carried out in nine different Laureate institutions, operating in eight different countries. Faculty were asked about professional recognition, its importance and how it should occur. The results of the study show a lot of consistency, starting with the conviction of its importance, and then …

Living Well: The Value Of Teaching Place, Catherine M. English Nov 2011

Living Well: The Value Of Teaching Place, Catherine M. English

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation is a teaching memoir that examines the implementation of a place conscious pedagogy as a means to teach sustainable living practices into a secondary English classroom in a rural Nebraska school. It is framed upon the premise of instilling five senses of place consciousness into students as defined by Haas and Nachtigal (1998) including living well in community or a sense of belonging; living well spiritually or a sense of connection; living well economically or a sense of worth; living well politically or a sense of civic involvement; and living well ecologically or a sense of place. A Core Knowledge Based Curriculum Designed To Help Seventh And Eighth Graders Maintain Artistic Confidence, Debbie Ann Labrum Nov 2011

A Core Knowledge Based Curriculum Designed To Help Seventh And Eighth Graders Maintain Artistic Confidence, Debbie Ann Labrum

Theses and Dissertations

How do we as art educators help adolescents maintain artistic creation as a way of visual expression? This study reviews artistic approaches among kindergarten through eighth grade students as they relate to the U-curve model of development (Davis, 1997; Pariser & van den Berg, 1997). As an art educator, my observation has been that as students approach seventh and eighth grades they lose confidence in their art making abilities as they try to draw in a realistic manner. When asked if they think they are artists, most are certain that they are not. This lack in confidence is in stark …

What Good Is Growth? Reconsidering Dewey On The Ends Of Education, R.W. Hildreth Nov 2011

What Good Is Growth? Reconsidering Dewey On The Ends Of Education, R.W. Hildreth

Education and Culture

One of the most persistent criticisms of John Dewey is his failure to provide definite ends for education. This essay reconstructs Dewey’s educational thought to provide more guidance on the nature of educational ends. Rather than impose external ends and a rigid curriculum, Dewey provides evaluative criteria so that citizens themselves can assess the educational and democratic value of any practice, curricula or institution. The political implications of this position are profound. It pushes away from expert driven models of educational authority and towards empirically grounded deliberative processes to guide educational practice and policy.

Political Goals And Social Ideals: Dewey, Democracy, And The Emergence Of The Turkish Republic, Charles Dorn, Doris A. Santoro Nov 2011

Political Goals And Social Ideals: Dewey, Democracy, And The Emergence Of The Turkish Republic, Charles Dorn, Doris A. Santoro

Education and Culture

Most historical scholarship on John Dewey’s 1924 educational mission to Turkey has focused on the degree to which the educator and philosopher’s recommendations were actually implemented. By bringing the disciplinary lenses of history and philosophy to bear on Dewey’s mission, this collaborative study differs from previous work by illuminating the disjuncture between Dewey’s conception of democratic localism as essential to an educational system in a vibrant democracy (a social ideal) and Turkish officials’ view of centralized, formal education as a means to promulgate a homogeneous, modern, secular and democratic identity for their new nation-state (a political goal).

Surface Modeling Topsoil Distribution On A Reclaimed Coal-Mine Site At Blackmesa Mine Complex, Kayenta, Arizona, Janine Ferarese Nov 2011

Surface Modeling Topsoil Distribution On A Reclaimed Coal-Mine Site At Blackmesa Mine Complex, Kayenta, Arizona, Janine Ferarese

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

A necessary precursor to ensure proper vegetation growth on reclaimed coal-mine areas is even distribution of topsoil. This capstone discusses development of surface models to describe the accurate determination and visualization of the distribution of topsoil. Prediction surfaces from topsoil-depth point samples were created using the surface interpolation methods, Inverse Distance Weighted and Kriging. The validity and accuracy of each method was assessed to determine the best method to evaluate actual topsoil distribution at a coal mining site. The model can be utilized by non- spatially trained personnel working in the mining arena as an aid in assessing how appropriately …
