A Study Of Teachers Using 21st Century Tools In A Rural South Carolina School District, Amanda Elmore Moss Jan 2011

A Study Of Teachers Using 21st Century Tools In A Rural South Carolina School District, Amanda Elmore Moss

Education Dissertations and Projects

Students currently live surrounded by technology and the tools of the 21st Century, but as Prensky (2008) asserted, students feel like they "have to power down" when they go to school by working without many of the technology tools with which they are comfortable and by changing, even slowing, their ways of thinking (p. 42). One purpose of this study was to evaluate the technology tools used by students and the quality or types of usage by teachers and students as defined by the recommendations of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills in a rural school district. The study also …

A Comparative Case Study Analysis Of Administrators Perceptions On The Adaptation Of Quality And Continuous Improvement Tools To Community Colleges In The State Of Michigan, Ted B. Mattis Jan 2011

A Comparative Case Study Analysis Of Administrators Perceptions On The Adaptation Of Quality And Continuous Improvement Tools To Community Colleges In The State Of Michigan, Ted B. Mattis

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether community college administrators in the state of Michigan believe that commonly known quality and continuous improvement tools, prevalent in a manufacturing environment, can be adapted to a community college model. The tools, specifically Six Sigma, benchmarking and process mapping have played a critical role in improving performance in the manufacturing sector. In 2008, the Obama administration made restoration of America'sEducational prominence a campaign promise and committed to the development of the American Graduation Initiative, a $12 billion plan to reform U.S. community colleges to be executed over the next decade. The …

Slope Failures And Cross-Valley Profiles, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, Richard A. Marston, Brandon J. Weihs, William D. Butler Jan 2011

Slope Failures And Cross-Valley Profiles, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, Richard A. Marston, Brandon J. Weihs, William D. Butler

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

This project described and explained the pattern of slope failures (falls, slides, flows, snow avalanches) and the shape of valley cross-profiles in five canyons of Grand Teton National Park. Shapefiles were created in ArcMap 9.3 for slope failures using existing data sets plus newly mapped failures. Valley cross-profiles were prepared for 44 locations in the canyons using digital elevation models (DEMs). The distribution of slope failures were found to be related, to various degrees, to slope aspect, distance from the Teton Fault, rock mass strength, Schmidt rock hammer values, and slope gradient. Shape files were generated that show sections of …

Gis-Based Estimation Of Housing Amenities: The Case Of High Grounds And Stagnant Streams, Shibashis Mukherjee, Arthur J. Caplan Jan 2011

Gis-Based Estimation Of Housing Amenities: The Case Of High Grounds And Stagnant Streams, Shibashis Mukherjee, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

We use GIS and econometric methods to estimate the marginal implicit values of environmental amenities associated with residential land parcels in the mountain town of Logan, Utah. Amenities include proximity to open spaces (such as parks, golf courses and lakes), commercial zones, major roads, streams, and general visibility of surrounding topography in the valley as determined by the elevation of the land parcel. The amenity value estimates are corrected for spatial autocorrelation. We find spatially dependent relationships between (1) a parcel’s value and its elevation, and (2) a parcel’s value and its adjacency to a stagnant stream. To our knowledge, …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Although sediment is a natural constituent of rivers, excess loading to rivers and streams is a leading cause of impairment and biodiversity loss. Remedial actions require identification of the sources and mechanisms of sediment supply. This task is complicated by the scale and complexity of large watersheds as well as changes in climate and land use that alter the drivers of sediment supply. Previous studies in Lake Pepin, a natural lake on the Mississippi River, indicate that sediment supply to the lake has increased 10-fold over the past 150 years.Herein we combine geochemical fingerprinting and a suite of geomorphic change …

Closing The Gap Between Watershed Modeling, Sediment Budgeting, And Stream Restoration, Sean M.C. Smith, Patrick Belmont, Peter Wilcock Jan 2011

Closing The Gap Between Watershed Modeling, Sediment Budgeting, And Stream Restoration, Sean M.C. Smith, Patrick Belmont, Peter Wilcock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The connection between stream restoration and sediment budgeting runs both ways: stream restoration is proposed as a means to reduce sediment yields, but an accurate understanding of sediment supply is necessary to design an effective project. Recent advances in monitoring technology, geochemical techniques, high-resolution topography data, and numerical modeling provide new opportunities to estimate sediment erosion, transport, and deposition rates; upscale them in a geomorphically relevant fashion; and synthesize sediment dynamics at watershed scales. For practical application at large scale, watershed models used to predict yield often do not resolve lower-order channels, leaving an essential “blind spot” regarding sediment processes. …

You're Doing It Wrong: How The Anti-Law School Scam Blogging Movement Can Shape The Legal Profession, Lucille A. Jewel Jan 2011

You're Doing It Wrong: How The Anti-Law School Scam Blogging Movement Can Shape The Legal Profession, Lucille A. Jewel

Scholarly Works

One of the biggest social advancements that the Internet has given us is the capacity for an individual’s idea to reach a mass audience. Internet-based communication forms, particularly blogs, enable an idea to gain credence without the involvement of traditional mass media outlets, such as newspapers or television stations. With no “top-down” filter that controls what ideas get disseminated, the Internet can amplify voices speaking from outside the mainstream culture that perhaps would not be heard under the traditional media system. The open network structure of the Internet also allows ideas to reach broad audiences and enables individuals, operating independently, …

Unbound By Theory And Naming: Survival Feminism And The Women Of The South African Victoria Mxenge Housing And Development Association, Becky Jacobs

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

The emergence of a uniquely African formulation of feminism is one of the most energizing developments in feminist theory and discourse in recent history. As African women confront unprecedented economic and political challenges, they also are questioning, and, in some instances, redefining, individual and societal orthodoxies of gender and family roles. This Article will examine the discourse on African feminism and will consider the practical utility of feminist theory in the context of one extraordinary group of South African women, the members of the Victoria Mxenge Housing and Development Association. The discussion will review the historical context in which the …

China’S Water Challenges: A Quick Q & A With Environmental Historian Kenneth Pomeranz, Jeffrey Wasserstrom Jan 2011

China’S Water Challenges: A Quick Q & A With Environmental Historian Kenneth Pomeranz, Jeffrey Wasserstrom

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Ken Pomeranz, Kate Merkel-Hess and I had various reasons for launching this blog at the start of 2008. One thing that led us to start the venture, at a time when Kate was the only one of us with any blogging experience, was simply a sense that some of the things that we were saying to one another over lunch and in the hallways at UC Irvine might be of interest to people in other places who were working on, living in, or just curious about China. As much as the venture has developed since then (adding new contributors continually, …

Differences Between Human Oriented And Machine Oriented Information Standards: Implications For Design Of Enterprise-Scale Information Systems, Joann Brooks, David Mann Jan 2011

Differences Between Human Oriented And Machine Oriented Information Standards: Implications For Design Of Enterprise-Scale Information Systems, Joann Brooks, David Mann

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Enterprise-scale information systems are deeply entwined with the networks of social practice that use and support them. Yet “interoperability” between information systems and social communities of practice is not always easily achieved, because these disparate types of entities operate according to different logics and respond differently to innovation processes. In this paper we identify differences between the types of information standards used in information systems and those commonly used within social communities of practice, terming the former “machine oriented standards” and the latter “human oriented standards.” We then provide a catalog of commonly used human oriented standards. We conclude by …

A Model To Predict The Evolution Of A Gravel Bed River Under An Imposed Cyclic Hydrograph And Its Application To The Trinity River, E. Viparelli, D. Gaeuman, Peter Wilcock, G. Parker Jan 2011

A Model To Predict The Evolution Of A Gravel Bed River Under An Imposed Cyclic Hydrograph And Its Application To The Trinity River, E. Viparelli, D. Gaeuman, Peter Wilcock, G. Parker

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Major changes in the morphology of the Trinity River in California, such as narrowing of the cross section and sedimentation of fine sediment in pools, occurred after the closure of a system of dams. These changes caused a dramatic reduction in the salmonid population and a resulting decline of the fishery. Gravel augmentation, regulated flood releases, and mechanical channel rehabilitation are currently being implemented to help restore the aquatic habitat of the river. The present paper describes a tool, named the Spawning Gravel Refresher, for designing and predicting the effects of gravel augmentation in gravel bed rivers. The tool assumes …

A Financial Impact Assessment Of Ld 1725: Stream Crossings, New England Environmental Finance Center

Economics and Finance

This report looks at the potential financial impact of LD 1725 on the estimated 30,000 stream crossings in the State of Maine that would be affected by the law. Our research for this report included the analysis of nearly 2000 stream crossings and the data collection necessary for the development of extensive stream crossing replacement cost models. We found that the 1.2 bankfull requirements in LD 1725 would result in a 75% ‐ 250% increase in structure widths for stream crossing projects across the state. An upsize of this magnitude would increase the cost of replacing stream crossings statewide by …
