Enso And Iod Teleconnections For African Ecosystems: Evidence Of Destructive Interference Between Climate Oscillations, Christopher A. Williams, N. P. Hanan Jan 2011

Enso And Iod Teleconnections For African Ecosystems: Evidence Of Destructive Interference Between Climate Oscillations, Christopher A. Williams, N. P. Hanan

Geography

Rainfall and vegetation across Africa are known to resonate with the coupled ocean-atmosphere phenomena of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). However, the regional-scale implications of sea surface temperature variability for Africa's photosyntheis have received little focused attention, particularly in the case of IOD. Furthermore, studies exploring the interactive effects of ENSO and IOD when coincident are lacking. This analysis uses remotely sensed vegetation change plus a land surface model driven with observed meteorology to investigate how rainfall, vegetation, and photosynthesis across Africa respond to these climate oscillations. In addition to the relatively well-known ENSO …

Reproduction And Genetic Detection Of Veligers In Changing Dreissena Populations In The Great Lakes, Jeffrey L. Ram, Aos S. Karim, Payel Acharya, Pranav Jagtap, Sonal Purohit, Donna R. Kashian

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Dreissenid bivalves, Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) and Dreissena bugensis (quagga mussel) are biofouling species that invaded the Great Lakes region of North America from source populations in Europe in the 1980s. Initially, D. polymorpha spread faster and farther; however, D. bugensis have recently displaced D. polymorpha in many areas of the Great Lakes and was the first to be found west of the Continental Divide. Early detection of dreissenids is important in anticipating and preventing potentially high economic impacts. To study population dynamics and to enhance detection methods, we assessed “spawnability” using a serotonin bioassay and developed a new, sensitive, …

Faculty Publications

Background

The care and protection of the estimated 143,000,000 orphaned and abandoned children (OAC) worldwide is of great importance to global policy makers and child service providers in low and middle income countries (LMICs), yet little is known about rates of child labour among OAC, what child and caregiver characteristics predict child engagement in work and labour, or when such work infers with schooling. This study examines rates and correlates of child labour among OAC and associations of child labour with schooling in a cohort of OAC in 5 LMICs.

Methods

The Positive Outcomes for Orphans (POFO) study employed a …

Le Spleen De Poughkeepsie, Joshua Harmon Jan 2011

Le Spleen De Poughkeepsie, Joshua Harmon

University of Akron Press Publications

Winner of the 2010 Akron Poetry Prize, Le Spleen de Poughkeepsie is "a tender anti-epic, a grunge-tinged love song to America's benighted post-industrial heartland." Harmon's Poughkeepsie shimmers just beyond the borders of banal recognition. "If you're not part of the problem, / you're part of the lengthening / tragedy," Harmon writes in an introductory pastoral, seeking out "the stray / detours and workarounds of the secret / city inside the more obvious one...on the outskirts of the absurd / attention to the material life." Poughkeepsie is that city of the heart where no one can look at anyone else "alone," …

Theorizing And Tracing The Legal Dimensions Of A Control Framework: Law And The Arab-Palestinian Minority In Israel's First Three Decades (1948-1978), Ilan Saban Jan 2011

Theorizing And Tracing The Legal Dimensions Of A Control Framework: Law And The Arab-Palestinian Minority In Israel's First Three Decades (1948-1978), Ilan Saban

Emory International Law Review

This Article analyzes the main ways in which Israeli law was involved in the lives of Israel's Arab-Palestinian minority in the first thirty years of Israeli statehood'from its establishment in 1948 until the period soon after the first Land Day in 1976. This is a detailed and complex story, which requires a theoretical or analytical key to cut through the complexity and sort out the abundance of data by relevancy and importance. The potential theoretical contribution of this Article derives from the effort to develop such a theoretical or analytical key, and from an attempt to gain a deeper understanding …

Does Emigration Benefit The Stayers? The Eu Enlargement As A Natural Experiment. Evidence From Lithuania, Benjamin Elsner Jan 2011

Does Emigration Benefit The Stayers? The Eu Enlargement As A Natural Experiment. Evidence From Lithuania, Benjamin Elsner

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The eastern enlargement of the European Union in 2004 triggered a large flow of migrant workers from the new member states to the UK and Ireland. This paper analyzes the impact of this migration wave on the real wages in the source countries. I consider the case of Lithuania, which had the highest share of emigrants relative to its workforce among all ten new member states. Using data from the Lithuanian Household Budget Survey and the Irish Census, I find that emigration had a significant positive effect on the wages of men who stayed in the country, but no such …

Entry On Export Markets And Firm-Level Performance Growth: Intra-Industrial Convergence Or Divergence?, Florian Mayneris Jan 2011

Entry On Export Markets And Firm-Level Performance Growth: Intra-Industrial Convergence Or Divergence?, Florian Mayneris

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper investigates theoretically and empirically the endogenous investment decision of firms conditioning on export decision. It shows that theoretically, whatever the form of preferences, firms that start exporting invest more and grow more than the others. However, it is shown that when preferences are CES, within each category of firms (domestic and switchers), initial productivity and investment are strategic complements, inducing intra-industrial divergence. On the contrary, when preferences are quadratic, initial productivity and investment are strategic substitutes: less productive firms invest more and grow more than the others, inducing intra-industrial convergence. Empirical results on French data support the predictions …

Robust Control And Hot Spots In Dynamic Spatially Interconnected Systems, William Brock, Anastasios Xepapadeas Jan 2011

Robust Control And Hot Spots In Dynamic Spatially Interconnected Systems, William Brock, Anastasios Xepapadeas

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper develops linear quadratic robust control theory for a class of spatially invariant distributed control systems that appear in areas of economics such as New Economic Geography, management of ecological systems, optimal harvesting of spatially mobile species, and the like. Since this class of problems has an infinite dimensional state and control space it would appear analytically intractable. We show that by Fourier transforming the problem, the solution decomposes into a countable number of finite state space robust control problems each of which can be solved by standard methods. We use this convenient property to characterize “hot spots” which …

Carbon Capture; Transport And Storage In Europe: A Problematic Energy Bridge To Nowhere?, Johannes Herold, Sophie Rüster, Christian Von Hirschhausen Jan 2011

Carbon Capture; Transport And Storage In Europe: A Problematic Energy Bridge To Nowhere?, Johannes Herold, Sophie Rüster, Christian Von Hirschhausen

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper is a follow up of the SECURE-project, financed by the European Commission to study “Security of Energy Considering its Uncertainties, Risks and Economic Implications”. It addresses the perspectives of, and the obstacles to a CCTS-roll out, as stipulated in some of the scenarios. Our main hypothesis is that given the substantial technical and institutional uncertainties, the lack of a clear political commitment, and the available alternatives of low-carbon technologies, CCTS is unlikely to play an important role in the future energy mix; it is even less likely to be an “energy bridge” into a low-carbon energy future.

Carbon Abatement Leaders And Laggards Non Parametric Analyses Of Policy Oriented Kuznets Curves, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Antonio Musolesi Jan 2011

Carbon Abatement Leaders And Laggards Non Parametric Analyses Of Policy Oriented Kuznets Curves, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Antonio Musolesi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We study the eventual structural differences of climate change leading ‘actors’ such as Northern EU countries, and ‘lagging actors’ - southern EU countries and the ‘Umbrella group’ - with regard to long run (1960-2001) carbon-income relationships. Parametric and semi parametric panel models show that the groups of countries that were in the Kyoto arena less in favour of stringent climate policy, have yet to experience a turning point, though they at least show relative delinking in their monotonic carbon-income relationship. Northern EU instead robustly shows bell shapes across models, which seem to depend on time related (policy) events. Time related …

Trends And Variability In Localized Precipitation Around Kibale National Park, Uganda, Africa, Mary D. Stampone, Joel N. Hartter, Colin A. Chapman, Sadie J. Ryan Jan 2011

Trends And Variability In Localized Precipitation Around Kibale National Park, Uganda, Africa, Mary D. Stampone, Joel N. Hartter, Colin A. Chapman, Sadie J. Ryan

Geography

Our objective was to understand and describe local spatial and temporal variability in precipitation around Kibale National Park, a tropical forest area of high conservation value. Continental or regional-scale trends are often relied upon to make policy and management decisions, but these analyses are often at too coarse a resolution to capture important variability at a finer scale where management actions operate. Monthly rainfall data derived from ten long-term station records (1941-1975) were used to evaluate local spatiotemporal variability in seasonal and annual rainfall for the area surrounding Kibale National Park. The magnitude, direction and significance of trends in seasonal …

Bats Of Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado: Composition, Reproduction, And Roosting Habits, Thomas J. O'Shea, Paul M. Cryan, E. Apple Snider, Ernest W. Valdez, Laura E. Ellison, Daniel J. Neubaum Jan 2011

Bats Of Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado: Composition, Reproduction, And Roosting Habits, Thomas J. O'Shea, Paul M. Cryan, E. Apple Snider, Ernest W. Valdez, Laura E. Ellison, Daniel J. Neubaum

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

We determined the bat fauna at Mesa Verde National Park (Mesa Verde) in 2006 and 2007, characterized bat elevational distribution and reproduction, and investigated roosting habits of selected species. We captured 1996 bats of 15 species in mist nets set over water during 120 nights of sampling and recorded echolocation calls of an additional species. The bat fauna at Mesa Verde included every species of bat known west of the Great Plains in Colorado, except the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus). Some species showed skewed sex ratios, primarily due to a preponderance of males. Thirteen species of bats …

Slow Slip Beneath The Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica And Its Effect On The Interseismic Cycle, Kimberly C. Outerbridge Jan 2011

Slow Slip Beneath The Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica And Its Effect On The Interseismic Cycle, Kimberly C. Outerbridge

Open Access Dissertations

The close proximity of the Nicoya Peninsula to the Cocos-Caribbean Subduction zone plate boundary makes it a prime location to use GPS to study episodic tremor and slip. Nicoya Peninsula currently has operating networks of both continuous GPS (CGPS) and seismic stations designed to identify and characterize the pattern of episodic tremor and slip (ETS) events along the seismogenic zone under Costa Rica's Pacific Margin. The occurrence of slow slip events has been previously postulated in this region based on correlated fluid flow and seismic tremor events recorded near the margin wedge in 2000 and from sparse GPS observations in …
