Not Just A Walk In The Park: Methodological Improvements For Determining Environmental Justice Implications Of Park Access In New York City For The Promotion Of Physical Activity, Keith K. Miyake, Andrew R. Maroko, Kristen L. Grady, Juliana A. Maantay, Peter S. Arno Feb 2011

Arno

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that access to parks in New York City is not equitable across racial and ethnic categories. It builds on previous research that has linked access to parks and open space with increased physical activity, which in turn may reduce the risk for adverse health outcomes related to obesity. Systematic patterns of uneven access to parks might help to explain disparities in these health outcomes across sociodemographic populations that are not fully explained by individual-level risk factors and health behaviors, and therefore access to parks becomes an environmental justice issue. This …

How Do New York City’S Recent Rezonings Align With Its Goals For Park Accessibility?, Simon T. Mcdonnell, Josiah Madar, Vicki Been

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

In 2007, New York City adopted a long-term sustainability plan that announced a goal of ensuring that almost every New Yorker lives within a ten minute walk of a park of substantial size. At the same time, policymakers are rewriting the City’s land use map through an unprecedented series of neighborhood level rezonings that involve changing the use type and residential capacity of affected lots or groups of lots. Despite the confluence of these interventions, no research has analyzed how the rezonings interact with the City’s park infrastructure, and specifically, whether residential capacity changes in areas close to parks differ …

Economics Of Literary Translation. A Simple Theory And Evidence, Victor Ginsburgh, Shlomo Weber, Sheila Weyers Feb 2011

Economics Of Literary Translation. A Simple Theory And Evidence, Victor Ginsburgh, Shlomo Weber, Sheila Weyers

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Books are an important factor of cultural transmission, but often need to be translated to achieve this goal. English is sometimes accused of dominating in terms of translations. We develop a simple theoretical model, which is estimated using UNESCO translation data, and show that if account is taken of factors such as production in the original language and distances between cultures, translations from English are by-passed in relative terms by translations from other idioms, including Scandinavian languages and French. Very little is however translated into English.

Parental Perceptions Of The Rural School’S Role In Addressing Childhood Obesity, Ann M. Stalter, Mary Beth Kaylor, Jessica D. Steinke, Rosanta M. Barker

Nursing Faculty Publications

This study employed cross-sectional, descriptive design with convenience sampling to explore rural parent perceptions of child obesity, use of Body Mass Index (BMI) in schools, preferences for receipt of BMI information and, the rural school’s role in obesity prevention/treatment. The survey “Parental Perceptions of BMI and Obesity in the School-Age Child” was used. Of the 183 surveys distributed, 65 were returned (35.5%). Fifty-five percentage of parents were in agreement of school-based BMI screening. Fifty-four percentage of parents selected a combination of ways to receive BMI information (letter from school nurse, face-to-face conference with nurse, or via report card). Few parents …

Do The Gses Expand The Supply Of Mortgage Credit? New Evidence Of Crowd Out In The Secondary Mortgage Market, Stuart A. Gabriel, Stuart S. Rosenthal

Economics - All Scholarship

The dramatic government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in September, 2008 was motivated in part by a desire to ensure a continued flow of credit to the mortgage market. This study examines a closely related issue: the extent to which GSE activity crowds out mortgage purchases by private secondary market intermediaries. Evidence of substantial crowd out suggests that government support for the GSEs may be less warranted, whereas the absence of crowd out implies that GSE loan purchases enhance liquidity.

Using 1994-2008 HMDA data for conventional, conforming sized loans, three distinct periods with regard to GSE crowd out …

A Study Of Riders' Noise Exposure On Bay Area Rapid Transit Trains, Alexis Dinno, Cynthia Powell, Margaret Mary King Feb 2011

A Study Of Riders' Noise Exposure On Bay Area Rapid Transit Trains, Alexis Dinno, Cynthia Powell, Margaret Mary King

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Excessive noise exposure may present a hazard to hearing, cardiovascular and psychosomatic health. Mass transit systems, such as the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, are potential sources of excessive noise. The purpose of this study was to characterize transit noise and riders' exposure to noise on the BART system using three dosimetry metrics. We made 268 dosimetry measurements on a convenience sample of 51 line segments. Dosimetry measures were modeled using linear and non-linear multiple regression as functions of average velocity, tunnel enclosure, flooring, and wet weather conditions, and presented visually on a map of the BART system. This …

Meeting Learning Objectives Through Service-Learning: A Pomology Case Study, Lauren C. Garner Feb 2011

Meeting Learning Objectives Through Service-Learning: A Pomology Case Study, Lauren C. Garner

Horticulture and Crop Science

Undergraduate students enrolled in the introductory pomology course at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, from 2007 to 2010, participated in a service-learning project. Students helped the community organization, the California Rare Fruit Growers (CRFG), teach grafting skills to San Louis Obispo County high school students and community members. At the end of each quarter, pomology students completed evaluations of their experience. Results of these evaluations were used to improve teaching methodology and the experience in which the students participated. Self-reported and instructor evaluations of the service-learning project demonstrated that students increased their grafting knowledge and skills, their …

Engine Performance And Emissions Analysis Using “Envo Diesel” And Coconut Biodiesel Blended Fuel As Alternative Fuels, A.M. Liaquat, M.A. Kalam, Haji Hassan Masjuki, M.H. Jayed

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The Environmental concerns and regulations to reduce green house gas emission and fluctuation of fossil fuel price have stimulated research on alternative fuels. Moreover, use of unproductive land to produce vegetable oil which is a potential biodiesel source has opened up a way to reduce oil bill. Biodiesel does not need major modification in engine, even though it causes some engine problems in long term use. This paper presents experimental results that evaluates the performance and exhaust emissions of a diesel engine operated on “Envo Diesel” which consists of 5% palm diesel and 95% ordinary diesel fuel (also termed as …

Utilization Of Geographic Information System For Research, Management, And Education In The Natural Resources Management Department At California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, David In Yun

Master's Theses

Geographic Information System (GIS) is “an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information” (ESRI, 1997a). The Natural Resources Management Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, hereafter NRM, was one of the early users of GIS technology. Although GIS was primarily used as an educational tool, it was also used for cataloging and displaying resource information for management planning and research projects. As the computing technology advanced, GIS became more powerful and easier to use. NRM faculty and …

Campus Violence, Pamela Jenkins

DRU Workshop 2011 Presentations - Disaster Resistant University Workshop: Building Partnerships in Mitigation

Universities are often portrayed as sanctuaries of learning – of places where students, faculty and staff come together to think and talk about ideas.  After four or five years, a student leaves and takes this learning to his or her new workplace.  That view of college campuses is nostalgic and inaccurate. Colleges, like all parts of the community, are affected by a variety of crimes and criminal behavior.  How a university responds to this problem sets the stage for defining the institution’s climate.  It is not only about how safe students are, but more importantly how safe students feel.  In …
