Atlas Of Myriapod Biogeography. I. Indigenous Ordinal And Supra-Ordinal Distributions In The Diplopoda: Perspectives On Taxon Origins And Ages, And A Hypothesis On The Origin And Early Evolution Of The Class, Rowland M. Shelley, Sergei I. Golavatch

Insecta Mundi

The biogeographic significance of Diplopoda is substantiated by 50 maps documenting indigenous occurrences of the 16 orders, the three Spirostreptida s. l. suborders – Cambalidea, Epinannolenidea, Spirostreptidea – and all higher taxa including Diplopoda itself. The class is indigenous to all continents except Antarctica and islands/archipelagos in all temperate and tropical seas and oceans except the Arctic; it ranges from Kodiak Island and the northern Alaskan Panhandle, United States (USA), southern Hudson Bay, Canada, and near or north of the Arctic Circle in Iceland, continental Scandinavia, and Siberia to southern “mainland” Argentina, the southern tips of Africa and Tasmania, and …

The Diversity And Distributions Of The Beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) Of The Northern Leeward Islands, Lesser Antilles (Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Nevis, Saba, St. Barthélemy, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, And St. Martin-St. Maarten, Stewart B. Peck

Insecta Mundi

This paper summarizes the published information on the beetle fauna of the northern Leeward Islands (Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Nevis, Saba, St. Barthélemy, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, St. Martin-St. Maarten, and smaller associated islands, excluding Montserrat). These islands are generally smaller, lower, and drier than the remaining Leeward and Windward islands of the Lesser Antilles island arc. The fauna contains 26 families, with 155 genera, and 218 species. The families with the largest number of recorded species are Staphylinidae (36), Cerambycidae (28), Scarabaeidae (25), Tenebrionidae (23), Curculionidae (18), and Carabidae (15). At least 7 species (3.2% of the fauna) were probably …

Molar Macrowear Reveals Neanderthal Eco-Geographic Dietary Variation, Luca Fiorenza, Stefano Benazzi, Jeremy Tausch, Ottmar Kullmer, Timothy G. Bromage, Friedemann Schrenk

Publications and Research

Neanderthal diets are reported to be based mainly on the consumption of large and medium sized herbivores, while the exploitation of other food types including plants has also been demonstrated. Though some studies conclude that early Homo sapiens were active hunters, the analyses of faunal assemblages, stone tool technologies and stable isotopic studies indicate that they exploited broader dietary resources than Neanderthals. Whereas previous studies assume taxon-specific dietary specializations, we suggest here that the diet of both Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens is determined by ecological conditions. We analyzed molar wear patterns using occlusal fingerprint analysis derived from optical 3D …

Home: The Place The Older Adult Can Not Imagine Living Without, Catharina Gillsjö, Donna Schwartz-Barcott, Iréne Von Post

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Background:

Rapidly aging populations with an increased desire to remain at home and changes in health policy that promote the transfer of health care from formal places, as hospitals and institutions, to the more informal setting of one's home support the need for further research that is designed specifically to understand the experience of home among older adults. Yet, little is known among health care providers about the older adult's experience of home. The aim of this study was to understand the experience of home as experienced by older adults living in a rural community in Sweden.

Localization Of Open Educational Resources (Oer) In Nepal: Strategies Of Himalayan Knowledge-Workers, Tiffany Ivins Mar 2011

Localization Of Open Educational Resources (Oer) In Nepal: Strategies Of Himalayan Knowledge-Workers, Tiffany Ivins

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines localization of Open Educational Resources (OER) in Himalayan community technology centers of Nepal. Specifically, I examine strategies and practices that local knowledge-workers utilize in order to localize educational content for the disparate needs, interests, and ability-levels of learners in rural villages. This study draws on insights from non-formal education (NFE) stakeholders in Nepal, including government, UN, international and national NGOs, local knowledge-workers, and learners from different villages. I specifically focus on a sample of seven technology centers to better understand how localization is defined, designed, and executed at a ground level. I illuminate obstacles knowledge-workers face while …

Arctic Observing Network Social Indicators Project: Overview, Jack Kruse, Marie Lowe, Sharman Haley, Ginny Fay, Larry Hamilton, Matthew Berman

ISER Reports

The Arctic Observing Network Social Indicators Project (NSF OPP0638408) is intended to contribute to the development of the Arctic Observation Network and to the science goals of SEARCH in two ways: (1) develop and make available to the science community relevant datasets and (2) identify gaps in the existing observation system and recommend appropriate actions to fill those gaps. The SEARCH Implementation Plan identified the following arenas of human activity likely to involve climate–human interactions: (1) subsistence hunting; (2) tourism; (3) resource development and marine transportation; and (4) commercial fishing. This project seeks to develop and assess datasets in these …

United States Census: Finding Numbers, Using Data, Kirsten Clark, Amy West Mar 2011

United States Census: Finding Numbers, Using Data, Kirsten Clark, Amy West

Library Technology Conference

The Census is more than just a count of the number of people in a geographic area. The data collected determine the political power of our Congressional representatives, decide the amount of federal money that comes to our state, and help inform state, federal, and local agencies on policy issues related to its citizens. Its use extends beyond governments to social action groups, those seeking grant funding, small business owners, and the new resident wanting to learn more about their city. The recent release of data from the American Community Survey and the upcoming releases of 2010 Census information make …

Increasing Efficiency In Boundary Security With Wireless Sensor Networks And Geospatial Information Systems Using Homology Theory, Luis Berumen^, Eric Chaidez^, Hamide Dogan*, Jose Gerardo Rosiles**

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011

As part of an institutional investigation, we attempt to address the challenges the US customs and Border protection agency faces in the El Paso region. Our research focuses on defining a system for the surveillance application, and the use of mathematical models employed to achieve a greater efficiency of such architecture. With the use of the defined system, we apply homology theory through the algebraic process of topology, to accomplish an independent coordinate-free based system, which covers the surveillance area, with lesser quantity of sensor nodes. Our architecture makes the use of an operating system for wireless sensor networks; TinyOS, …

Human Trafficking: What Is The Role Of The Health Care Provider?, Patricia A. Crane, Melissa Moreno Mar 2011

Human Trafficking: What Is The Role Of The Health Care Provider?, Patricia A. Crane, Melissa Moreno

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The article will address the global and local issue of human trafficking. An estimated 20,000 people are trafficked within the U.S. each year. Trafficked people are forced, defrauded and coerced into labor and sexual service for profit of others. Traffickers use individual vulnerabilities and immigration status, language ability and poor understanding of U.S. laws to identify future victims. One case in 2005 in Texas resulted in 100 victims being identified, none of whom revealed themselves to health care professionals.

Health care professionals need contemporary and updated information and resources about health risks, screening methods, and identification of trafficked persons. Readers …
