Historic And Contemporary Trends Of The Conservation Reserve Program And Ring-Necked Pheasants In South Dakota, Chris Laingen Apr 2011

Historic And Contemporary Trends Of The Conservation Reserve Program And Ring-Necked Pheasants In South Dakota, Chris Laingen

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Over the past century, the interactions between agricultural land use and government cropland retirement programs have affected pheasant population change. Two government land retirement programs that returned croplands to grasslands, Soil Bank in the 1960s and the current Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), help to illustrate these connections. From 2007 to 2010, South Dakota lost 41% of its CRP lands and experienced an 18% decline in pheasants per mile. However, because of where CRP expirations have occurred and where pheasant populations are found , some regional variability is seen. Western South Dakota (Region 1) had an 80% increase in pheasants per …

In order to fully understand the topic, the research included not only mathematics curriculum, but also methods of instruction, the system for teacher preparation, and an evaluation of community perceptions. Data collection integrated participant observations in two francophone primary schools in Dschang, interviews with primary school teachers, interviews with ministry of education officials, and survey data from teachers and community members in Yaoundé, Ngaoundéré and Dschang. Overall, three conclusions were drawn from the data collected. First, that mathematics is perceived as important by the …

“It’S Just Not That Simple:” Territory And Politics At Girdwood Park, Kyra Fallon Apr 2011

“It’S Just Not That Simple:” Territory And Politics At Girdwood Park, Kyra Fallon

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This report is the outcome of a month long study of space and territory in North Belfast. Data was obtained by way of qualitative methods using focused interviews and mapping, within theoretical frameworks from sociology and human geography. Segregation, space, and demographic change are explored as factors of localized territorial conflict. This theory is applied to the Crumlin Road Gaol and Girdwood Barracks regeneration project in North Belfast, where the contentious issue of housing on the site has stalled other development. The research finds that these factors do play a role in the project and also seeks to explore the …

Academic Journal Publishing In Nigeria: Issues, Challenges And Prospects, A.O. Amusan, Dele Olanisimi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Compared to the situation up to the late 1970s, academic publishing in Africa and its concomitant effect of scholarly research has declined in terms of output, quality and regularity of a publications (Olukoju, 2002). This reflects the general decline in the standards and funding of education, a consequence of prolonged military rule characterized by lack of accountability and thinly veiled culture of obscurantism (Olukoju, 2002). He also stressed the problem of collapsed currency, owing to plunder, and mismanagement by the country’s military rulers and their civilian collaborations.

From Famine To Feast: The Give And Take Of Food In A Global Subsistence Environment, Laurence M. Carucci Apr 2011

From Famine To Feast: The Give And Take Of Food In A Global Subsistence Environment, Laurence M. Carucci

Pacific Studies

Food is the primary transactional substance for Enewetak/Ujelang people [Republic of the Marshall Islands] and its production, preparation, consumption and exchange are central to how local people fashion and maintain social relationships and how they construct identities. At the same time, while the constitutive properties of food have remained culturally vigorous, the foods themselves have changed radically under colonialism. In particular, rehabilitation attempts in the post-nuclear testing era on Enewetak introduced extraordinary rapid dietary changes in the community and resulted in the onset of an epidemic of sedentary illnesses. The social practices that relate to food production and consumption are …

Determinants Of Management Control At Responsibility Centre Level: Software Industry As A Case, L S Murty, G Ramesh

Working Papers

Current body of knowledge primarily focuses on variations in and determinants of management control systems at organizational level and, to some extent, at Strategic Business Unit (SBU) level. This study proposes that the level of analysis be extended to Responsibility Center (RC) level. Further, the extant studies focus on limited contingent variables like size, top management style, strategy, structure, etc. This paper makes a departure by extending the control system determinants at RC level to also include its own environmental variables in terms of its product market characteristics, client characteristics, and profitability of unit and project. The study is set …

The Migrant Making Organization Gender, Labor And Agency In A New Migration Process, Marit Aure Apr 2011

The Migrant Making Organization Gender, Labor And Agency In A New Migration Process, Marit Aure

Journal of International and Global Studies

Labor migration is increasing in scale and diversity and is characterized by a new feminization. Despite these transformations, a common theme remains unchanged: immigrant workers are employed in low-skilled jobs. This study of labor migration from Russia to Norway analyzes the establishment of a new migration process, who was involved in this migration, and why this migration from Russia to Norway became dominated by women. It also discusses the situation of the Russian workers in the Norwegian labor market. Analyses of the recruitment processes show how gender, sexuality, age, marital status, education, and motherhood construct women as suitable migrants and …

Missionaries To The Wilderness: A History Of Land, Identity, And Moral Geography In Appalachia, Jill M. Fraley Apr 2011

Missionaries To The Wilderness: A History Of Land, Identity, And Moral Geography In Appalachia, Jill M. Fraley

Scholarly Articles

This article revisits the relationship between missionaries and Appalachian stereotypes, bringing to the discussion new developments in geographical theory and the intellectual history of ideas of wilderness. The article argues that missionary activities during the early twentieth century are best understood through their beliefs about wilderness and particularly about the moral climate of man within it. In this way the missionaries also contributed to the process of intermingling ideas about the land and the people and thereby contributed to the formation of a quasi-ethnic regional identity in the American public consciousness—and also substantially changed Appalachia by applying a set of …

A ‘Driving Force’ In Developing The Nation’S Forests: The Mcintire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program., Steven H. Bullard, Perry J. Brown, Catalino A. Blanche, Richard W. Binker, Don H. Thompson

Faculty Publications

The McIntire-Stennis (M-S) Cooperative Forestry Research Program has provided fundamental support for creating and strengthening forestry research and graduate training efforts at colleges and universities across the nation for nearly 50 years. M-S funding has helped produce thousands of forestry scientists and other research professionals, and M-S–supported research has provided critical basic understanding and applied solutions to extend the benefits that flow from forests and related rangelands across the nation over time. The 1962 legislation that created the M-S program authorized funding of up to one-half of the funds appropriated for federal forestry research conducted directly by the USDA. Throughout …

Making The Inscrutable, Scrutable: Race And Space In Victoria's Chinatown, 1891, Patrick A. Dunae, John S. Lutz, Donald Lafreniere, Jason Gilliland

Geography & Environment Publications

  • This article analyzes the racial and social structure of Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, in particular its Chinatown neighbourhood. The authors' methodology combines the use of geographical information systems (gis) with discourse analysis, and devise a theoretical framework derived from the ideas of Henri Lefebvre. The authors come to the view that the community "was extensively but not exclusively Chinese and a Chinese population that was not confined to Chinatown"; and further that "the boundaries of race were not as fixed as they have often been assumed to be.". Homelessness And The Mobile Shelter System: Public Transportation As Shelter, Laura Nichols, Fernando Cázares Apr 2011

Homelessness And The Mobile Shelter System: Public Transportation As Shelter, Laura Nichols, Fernando Cázares

Sociology

Those without housing often use public space differently than those who are housed. This can cause dilemmas for and conflicts among public officials as guardians of public space and goods. In this paper, we look at one such utilisation of space from the perspective of those who board 24-hour public transportation routes and ride the bus all night for shelter. We describe the results of a preliminary survey, observations and informal conversations with unhoused riders on the bus over three nights in one county in the United States. We found that a substantial number of the unhoused riders we surveyed …

Culinary Voices: Perspectives From Dublin Restaurants, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Apr 2011

Culinary Voices: Perspectives From Dublin Restaurants, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Articles

Despite growing interest in culinary history and gastronomy in the last three decades, the use of oral history within the culinary field remains in an embryonic stage. By discussing the strength of oral history, particularly when triangulated with other sources, and surveying some food related projects, the article focuses on the power of oral history to capture the life experiences of chefs, waiters, restaurateurs and diners. The article calls on curators of culinary libraries to build oral history archives which can be accessed electronically.
