Covering Terrorism: A Comparative Analysis Of Al Jazeear New Site And Al Arabiya News Site., Khalaf Mohammad Tahat

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how two Arab news sites, Al Jazeera news site and Al Arabiya news site, portrayed terrorism events from Sept.11, 2009 to Sept.10, 2010. A total of 200 stories were analyzed, with 100 stories from each sites. The two sites have failed to correct the stereotype of Muslims as terrorists. They didn't make serious efforts to dispel the negative image of Islam, which Western media frequently accused Arab and Muslims as being terrorism makers. In addition, they were unable to crystallize clear trends, specific and bold positions to reflect the Arab-Islamic culture regarding …

Phylogeography Of The Polychaete Phragmatopoma Californica (Family Sabellarididae) In The Southern California Bight (Scb), Praneeth Kamana

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study measured the genetic differentiation among populations of Phragmatopoma californica and compared this genetic structuring with another polychaete species (Neries grubei) having a different life history. A total of 234 samples from 13 populations of the sabelleriid polychaete Phragmatapoma californica (Fewkes) from six mainland sites along the southern California coast and two Channel Islands were studied by way of inter simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) to determine genetic diversity, divergence and to estimate gene flow among populations. The results were compared to another polycheate species, Neries grubei which has a shorter larval development than P. californica, reducing potential dispersal and …

Memory, Identity, And Paternalism: Creating An Appalachian Camelot, Lisa R. Perry May 2011

Memory, Identity, And Paternalism: Creating An Appalachian Camelot, Lisa R. Perry

Student Theses and Dissertations

Wheelwright, Kentucky was founded as a coal camp, a community built to serve the needs of the mining industry and intended to last only as long as the coal. Hundreds of communities such as this flourished in the Appalachian Mountains from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century. In 1930, however, Inland Steel Company purchased the town from Elk Horn Coal Company and began a period of community development that ushered in an era that some today refer to as Camelot, a golden age when all one could want could be found within the confines of a two-mile long …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of Black males being raised in a mother-only household and their career aspirations. The absence of the father in a home stands at the forefront as the cause of family dysfunction, which subsequently leads to the destruction of many hopes and dreams of the Black male.Is a mother-only household a preconceived environment for failure for the Black male?

Leaders Of '98: Murphy And Mccracken A Comparison Of The 1798 Rebellion In Wexford And Antrim, David Carton May 2011

Leaders Of '98: Murphy And Mccracken A Comparison Of The 1798 Rebellion In Wexford And Antrim, David Carton

Graduate Theses

This study examines the relationship between the Irish nationalist risings in Wexford and Antrim in 1798. The Antrim Rising was a largely ideological movement that was influenced by the beliefs of the United Irishmen; in contrast, the Wexford Rising was a reactionary movement that was influenced by the leadership of Fr. John Murphy of Boolavogue. An analysis of the differences and similarities of these two leaders serves as the primary mode of analysis. McCracken restructured the United Irishmen in Belfast into a secret revolutionary society, as Murphy mobilized rebel forces in Wexford and inspired a military uprising. This thesis seeks …

Democratic Nationalistic Privilege And The Exclusion Of Europe's "Gypsy", Eli E. Roth May 2011

Democratic Nationalistic Privilege And The Exclusion Of Europe's "Gypsy", Eli E. Roth

Senior Honors Projects

Europe is the world’s best example of a group of countries offering similar levels of political freedom, tolerance, and economic prosperity and security. Following the fall of Communism, Europe began to outpace the rest of the planet on aggregated indicators of development, and, according to Freedomhouse.org, only two of the world’s forty seven “not free” countries, Belarus and Russia, can be found on this continent. The Roma, frequently mislabeled as “Gypsies,” are among the few troubled populations residing in Europe. In the comprehensive 2006 Final Report on the Human Rights Situation of the Roma in Europe, one Romani man describes …

The Reciprocal Reshaping Of The American Dream And American Religion, Samir S. Gupte May 2011

The Reciprocal Reshaping Of The American Dream And American Religion, Samir S. Gupte

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Religion has played an important role in the creation and dissemination of the idea now called the American Dream since the discovery of the North American continent. The first iteration of the American Dream manifested in the sixteenth century as a Return to Eden. The next phase was best represented by the Puritan quest for freedom of religion. In the eighteenth century, independence was the object of the American Dream. This was supported by the First Great Awakening. The nineteenth century American Dream can be characterized as opportunity as evidenced by immigration, westward migration, and the growth of commercial enterprise. …

Caring For Grandchildren And Intergenerational Support In Rural China: A Gendered Extended Family Perspective, Zhen Cong, Merril D. Silverstein

Falk College Research Center

This investigation examines how support from adult children is affected by their parents’ involvement in grandchild care. Instead of focusing on dyadic interactions, we adopt a gendered extended family perspective to examine how financial and emotional support from children was influenced when their siblings received help with child care from their elder parents. The data were from a two-wave (2001, 2003) longitudinal study of 4,791 parent–child dyads with 1,162 parents, aged 60 and older, living in rural areas of Anhui Province, China. Random effects regression showed that emotional support from both sons and daughters was strengthened when parents provided more …

Geologic Composition Influences Distribution Of Microbiotic Crusts In The Mojave And Colorado Deserts At The Regional Scale, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Nicole Pietrasiak, Jeffrey R. Johansen

Biology

Abiotic and biotic factors influencing distribution of microbiotic crusts within hot deserts, such as the Mojave and Colorado Deserts, are poorly known. Our objective was to examine microbiotic crust distribution with reference to soil and parent material characteristics as well as plant functional groups in wilderness areas of Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP). A total of 75 sites were visually assessed for crust abundance and plant community composition; soil physical and chemical factors also were measured. Microbiotic crusts of JTNP, in particular lichen and moss crusts, were not as well-developed or as widely distributed as in other arid regions of …

National Park Service Cave And Karst Resources Management Case Study: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Daniel C. Nolfi May 2011

National Park Service Cave And Karst Resources Management Case Study: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Daniel C. Nolfi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As discussed in the National Parks Service’s (NPS) Directors Orders/Natural Resources Management Reference Manual #77 and the 2006 NPS Management Policy Handbook, implementing a management plan specifically for cave and karst resources within a national park is paramount to afford these resources appropriate protection. With support from the Federal Cave Resources Protection Act and the National Park Service Organic Act of 1906, management actions protecting caves has begun to place significant importance outside the traditional cave environment onto a broader karst landscape. The need to understand and protect the karst environment and caves as a karst resource has taken a …

Determining The Lon-Exchange Mechanism Of Strontium Into A Niobium Doped Titanosilicate, Samantha Jane Kramer May 2011

Determining The Lon-Exchange Mechanism Of Strontium Into A Niobium Doped Titanosilicate, Samantha Jane Kramer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A 25% niobium substituted sitinakite was exchanged with strontium as time resolved X-ray diffraction data was collected. The structural modeling of this data by Rietveld method1 has lead to the determination of the atomic positions of the ions and unit cell parameters as strontium occupancy increases.

The starting material of the exchange experiment is the protonated phase, H2Nb0.67Ti1.33SiO7·1.9 H2O, with space group P42/mcm2,3. Once strontium (Sr2+) enters the unit cell, extra-framework H2O molecules shift to provide the necessary hydration coordination. These new positions of H2O result in a lowering of symmetry to the P-42m space group, and it is thought …

The Need For Authentic Assessments, Gayle Y. Thieman May 2011

The Need For Authentic Assessments, Gayle Y. Thieman

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

As state and local policymakers develop valid assessments, as proposed by Secretary Duncan, I suggest they incorporate criteria of “authentic assessment.” Unlike traditional tests of factual recall, authentic assessments are designed to examine students’ performance on real-world tasks. Authentic assessments require active learning and involvement on the part of students who construct their own understanding and apply what they have learned. Students may use digital tools to interpret and evaluate complex information while considering multiple perspectives and alternative solutions. Students use ideas and methods of inquiry that are central to the discipline, e.g., doing the work of policy makers, historians, …

The Transformation Of A Shire: Local Negotiation In The Society For Creative Anachronism, Suzanne Barber May 2011

The Transformation Of A Shire: Local Negotiation In The Society For Creative Anachronism, Suzanne Barber

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis, I am examining how a small branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Loch an Fhraoich, whose values and identity center around camaraderie and narrative and aesthetic coherence, attempts to balance these two often contradictory principles. To better illustrate the negotiations taking place, I have used ethnographic fieldwork to focus on the areas of material culture, ethno-kinetics, persona, knowledge, and events. These areas are tightly interwoven, and almost never operate independently, but the exercise of isolating them is useful in seeing the complexities of choices that members must make to navigate the social world of the Society …

Economic Impacts Of Drought On Kentucky Corn, Hay, And Soybeans, Kortney E. Craft May 2011

Economic Impacts Of Drought On Kentucky Corn, Hay, And Soybeans, Kortney E. Craft

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Understanding climatic impacts is important if we are to comprehend the relationship between climate and society. Weather phenomena can have environmental, economical, and social impacts. Drought is the natural hazard that affects people the most. It is also the most complex and least understood. There is no one universally accepted definition for drought which makes its examination difficult. Droughts’ duration is also difficult to determine because it has no clearly defined onset and end. Also, drought varies both geographically and temporally making uniform drought monitoring difficult. Since drought is difficult to monitor and access, drought impacts are often poorly documented. …

The Assembly Of Ecological Communities Inferred From Taxonomic And Functional Composition, Eric R. Sokol, E. F. Benfield, Lisa K. Belden, H. Maurice Valett May 2011

The Assembly Of Ecological Communities Inferred From Taxonomic And Functional Composition, Eric R. Sokol, E. F. Benfield, Lisa K. Belden, H. Maurice Valett

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Among-site variation in metacommunities (beta diversity) is typically correlated with the distance separating the sites (spatial lag). This distance decay in similarity pattern has been linked to both niche-based and dispersal-based community assembly hypotheses. Here we show that beta diversity patterns in community composition, when supplemented with functional-trait information, can be used to diagnose assembly processes. First, using simulated data, we show how the relationship between distance decay patterns in taxonomic and functional measures of community composition can be used to predict the influence of a given trait on community assembly. We then use the patterns generated by the simulation …

Effects Of Soil Biota From Different Ranges On Robinia Invasion: Acquiring Mutualists And Escaping Pathogens, Ragan M. Callaway, Eulogio J. Bedmar, Kurt O. Reinhart, Cinta Gómez Silvan, John Klironomos May 2011

Effects Of Soil Biota From Different Ranges On Robinia Invasion: Acquiring Mutualists And Escaping Pathogens, Ragan M. Callaway, Eulogio J. Bedmar, Kurt O. Reinhart, Cinta Gómez Silvan, John Klironomos

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The net effects of soil biota on exotic invaders can be variable, in part, because net effects are produced by many interacting mutualists and antagonists. Here we compared mutualistic and antagonistic biota in soils collected in the native, expanded, and invasive range of the black locust tree, Robinia pseudoacacia. Robinia formed nodules in all soils with a broad phylogenetic range of N-fixing bacteria, and leaf N did not differ among the different sources of soil. This suggests that the global expansion of Robinia was not limited by the lack of appropriate mutualistic N-fixers. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) from the …

Franchise Partnership And International Expansion: A Conceptual Framework And Research Propositions, Dhruv Grewal, Golpalkrishnan R. Iyer, Rajshekar G. Javalgi, Lori Radulovich May 2011

Franchise Partnership And International Expansion: A Conceptual Framework And Research Propositions, Dhruv Grewal, Golpalkrishnan R. Iyer, Rajshekar G. Javalgi, Lori Radulovich

Business Faculty Publications

Although academic research has provided tremendous insights about the organizational form of franchising, considerable work remains with regard to understanding the critical factors that enable international franchise expansion and performance. The authors advance the argument that a franchise relationship is essentially an entrepreneurial partnership, and that this partnership influences the speed, scale, and scope of franchise expansion into international markets. In the proposed conceptual model, the authors detail the links among the franchise partnership, international expansion, and franchise system performance.

An Application Of The Edge Effect In Measuring Accessibility To Multiple Food Retailer Types In Southwestern Ontario, Canada, Richard Casey Sadler, Jason Gilliland, Godwin Arku May 2011

An Application Of The Edge Effect In Measuring Accessibility To Multiple Food Retailer Types In Southwestern Ontario, Canada, Richard Casey Sadler, Jason Gilliland, Godwin Arku

Geography & Environment Publications

Trends in food retailing associated with the consolidation of smaller-format retailers into fewer, larger-format supercentres have left some rural areas with fewer sources of nutritious, affordable food. Access to nutritious, affordable food is essential for good dietary habits and combating health issues such as type-2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Many studies on food environments use inaccurate or incomplete methods for locating food retailers, which may be responsible for mischaracterising food deserts. This study uses databases of every residence in and every food retailer in and around Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. Residences were geocoded to their precise address, and network …

Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Malaria In Paraguay, Nicole M. Wayant May 2011

Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Malaria In Paraguay, Nicole M. Wayant

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease that has afflicted humans for thousands of years. Today it is considered a re-emerging disease. Malaria is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical parts of the world. The disease has been linked to several environmental parameters, including precipitation, temperature, and deforestation. However, these relationships have mainly been studied in Africa and have not been explored in other parts of the world. The study area for this thesis was the South American country of Paraguay.

Paraguay has experienced an oscillation in malaria cases over the past 20 years, with monthly cases ranging from 0 to 1,200. …
