Borders, Bridges, And Beer: Performances Of Cultural Identities In The Washington Birthday Celebration, Diana Carolina Ramos Jul 2011

Borders, Bridges, And Beer: Performances Of Cultural Identities In The Washington Birthday Celebration, Diana Carolina Ramos

Communication ETDs

In this study I describe how individuals living in Laredo, Texas, a city situated in the U.S.-Mexico border region, make sense of their identities through their experiences in the Washington Birthday Celebration (WBC). By focusing on communication as means for creating cultural identities, this study provides insight into how communication is used in the construction and performance of cultural identities. Specifically, I focus on The Society of Martha Washington, one of the several affiliate organizations that participates in the WBC, in order to answer the following research questions about the enactment of cultural identities in the WBC: (1) What cultural …

Polygonal Sandcracks: Unique Sedimentary Desiccation Structures In Bahamian Ooid Grainstone, Bosiljka Glumac, H. Allen Curran, Sarah A. Motti, Madeline M. Weigner, Sarah Pruss Jul 2011

Polygonal Sandcracks: Unique Sedimentary Desiccation Structures In Bahamian Ooid Grainstone, Bosiljka Glumac, H. Allen Curran, Sarah A. Motti, Madeline M. Weigner, Sarah Pruss

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Sandcracks, which are ubiquitous in Holocene eolian and beach backshore carbonate grainstone on Alligator Point, Cat Island, Bahamas, resemble polygonal mudcracks, but formed in ooid sand without muddy matrix. In experiments on Cat Island beach sand, sediment surfaces cracked polygonally in the absence of mud or biofi lms while drying at room temperature due to contraction generated by capillary effects related to surface tension attraction of interstitial water. Gravitational collapse of irregular open pores and repacking of sand grains due to loss of cohesion between particles caused by evaporation of water enhance the cracking process and appearance of polygons by …

Preventing Workplace Injuries Commonly Sustained By Hotel Guestroom Attendants, Jennifer Daros Jul 2011

Preventing Workplace Injuries Commonly Sustained By Hotel Guestroom Attendants, Jennifer Daros

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Introduction:

Hotels are generally organized into various departments. These provide specialized services to guests. Almost every hotel in the world has (in one form or another) a housekeeping department. Guestroom attendants (GRAs) are a primary component of any housekeeping department. GRAs (also known as maids, housekeepers, or room/suite service attendants) are employed by hotels to clean guestrooms, change bed linens, restock supplies, and provide turn down services when requested (see Appendix A). Those employed as GRAs frequently suffer injuries at work that can be costly to employers. This paper reviews some of the more common causes of GRA workplace injuries …

Green Jobs And The Ohio Economy: The Workforce Skills And Training Ohio Green Industries Need, Wright State University, Center For Urban And Public Affairs, U.S. Department Of Labor Employment And Training Administration

Economic Development

In spring 2011, a survey was conducted with private employers representing selected sectors within the potential green industry. The following report presents research results about employers and the labor force skills they require to be successful in Ohio’s Green Industry.

As mentioned in earlier parts of this report series, there are many challenges to studying the green economy. The word “potential” in the first sentence of this report is a critical term, because there is no known listing of companies in the green industry. Green industry business association lists exist, but those are membership-based lists and not intended to be …

Teaching Sustainability Analysis In Electronics Lecture Courses, David Braun Jun 2011

Teaching Sustainability Analysis In Electronics Lecture Courses, David Braun

Electrical Engineering

Based on positive prior experiences teaching sustainability analysis in electronics laboratory courses, this work explores techniques for teaching sustainability analysis in lecture courses. As difficult as it may seem to incorporate sustainability into integrated circuit courses or other engineering courses, it may prove as easy as asking students to consider how the coursework relates to sustainability issues.

The need to educate students “to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability” has gained sufficient value to deserve its own ABET Program Outcome, …

Embodied Culture: An Exploration Of Irish Dance Through Trauma Theory, Erica Burgin Jun 2011

Embodied Culture: An Exploration Of Irish Dance Through Trauma Theory, Erica Burgin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines traditional Irish dance as a locus of cultural memory, inscribed on the body. The native people of Ireland experienced invasion and oppression for nearly a millennium, beginning with Viking invasions at the end of the 8th century and ending in the 1940s, when the British finally departed Ireland, now an independent country. During the years of English rule, the British imposed harsh laws and sought to eradicate all vestiges of Irish culture in an attempt to diminish Irish identity. Through the ages, the definition of what it means to be Irish has changed widely, frequently resulting in …

(Re)Placing Nation: Postcolonial Women's Contestations Of Spatial Discourse, Michelle N. Ramlagan Jun 2011

(Re)Placing Nation: Postcolonial Women's Contestations Of Spatial Discourse, Michelle N. Ramlagan

Open Access Dissertations

“(Re)Placing Nations: Postcolonial Women’s Contestations of Spatial Discourses” reads the proliferation of literary representations of landscapes in recent work by Jamaica Kincaid, Shani Mootoo, Edwidge Danticat, Yvonne Vera, Monica Arac de Nyeko and Toni Morrison as a trope for rethinking the nation as a space with physical boundaries. In this project I make the distinction between space as an ideological construct and place as a physical entity. Both place and space are connected to ideologies yet have specific implications for constructions of gender and sexuality. My project considers the dual yet dialectically related processes of creating physical space and identity …

Managed Control Of Composite Cloud Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Christopher C. Lamb, Pramod A. Jamkhedkar, Gregory L. Heileman

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Cloud providers have just begun to provide primitive functionality enabling users to configure and easily provision resources, primarily in the infrastructure as a service domain. In order to effectively manage cloud resources in an automated fashion, systems must automate quality-of-service (QoS) metric measurement as a part of a larger usage management strategy. Collected metrics can then be used within control loops to manage and provision cloud resources. This basic approach can be scaled to monitor the use of system artifacts as well as simple QoS parameters, and can also address the needs of large systems spanning the boundaries of single …

The 4+1 Program And Distance Learning Meeting Objectives And Outcomes, Daniel W. Walsh, Lanny Griffin, Robert S. Crockett

Biomedical Engineering

Graduate engineering education is a key to the maintenance of U.S. competitiveness in the world market. The world has been an extremely dynamic engine during the last fifty years, and we have witnessed a dramatic change in the world order. The change has been evolutionary in many cases, but events in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the erstwhile Soviet Union are only slightly less cataclysmic than the Second World War. In a world where strength is measured in terms of the financial resource, the technological ability and the intellectual capability of a populace Japan, China, India and the EEC …

Soil Temperature Response To 21st Century Global Warming: The Role Of And Some Implications For Peat Carbon In Thawing Permafrost Soils In North America, Dominik Wisser, S Marchenko, Julie Talbot, C C. Treat, Steve Frolking Jun 2011

Soil Temperature Response To 21st Century Global Warming: The Role Of And Some Implications For Peat Carbon In Thawing Permafrost Soils In North America, Dominik Wisser, S Marchenko, Julie Talbot, C C. Treat, Steve Frolking

Earth Sciences

Northern peatlands contain a large terrestrial carbon pool that plays an important role in the Earth’s carbon cycle. A considerable fraction of this carbon pool is currently in permafrost and is biogeochemically relatively inert; this will change with increasing soil temperatures as a result of climate warming in the 21st century. We use a geospatially explicit representation of peat areas and peat depth from a recently-compiled database and a geothermal model to estimate northern North America soil temperature responses to predicted changes in air temperature. We find that, despite a widespread decline in the areas classified as permafrost, soil temperatures …

The Role Of The Textile Materials Library: Providing Access To Multimodal Knowledge In Design Research, Marie O’Mahony, Tom Barker Jun 2011

The Role Of The Textile Materials Library: Providing Access To Multimodal Knowledge In Design Research, Marie O’Mahony, Tom Barker

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper considers the role of the textile materials library as an effective research tool through its provision of tactile, visual samples, technical data and project application information. The abundance of new materials and the increasing complexity of materials and processes that are used by designers requires a comprehensive rethink of the traditional ‘samples in a box’ approach. The physical handling of fabrics samples allows for a haptic learning tool to isolate and combine the senses in information gathering. Written data in the form of books, papers, and specification sheets can communicate information about the composition, origin, designer/manufacturer, production process, …

Staging Multi-Modal Explorative Research Using Formalised Techniques Of Performing Arts, Karin Søndergaard, Kjell Yngve Petersen Jun 2011

Staging Multi-Modal Explorative Research Using Formalised Techniques Of Performing Arts, Karin Søndergaard, Kjell Yngve Petersen

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper presents methods of experiential research derived from formalised techniques of performing arts practice. Through a process of dedicated laboratories, expert practices are extracted and formalised into methods of situating analytic experientiality. The paper reports and reflects on the developed methods as a system for the design of research in situated experience. The proposed methods of staged experientiality build on previous research in enabling participation as an analytic medium of research. Further, the insights in expert practices of performance arts derive from the authors’ position as expert performance practitioners, and their long standing engagement in formalisation and transfer of …

Generating Tacit Knowledge Through Motion: A Vision On The Matter Of Space, Liselotte Vroman, Thierry Lagrange, Luiz Naveda Jun 2011

Generating Tacit Knowledge Through Motion: A Vision On The Matter Of Space, Liselotte Vroman, Thierry Lagrange, Luiz Naveda

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper aims to observe and bring forth the embodied experience of space, while an individual interacts through moving. This research project is about how architecture can be conceived, setting out from the embodied experience of space. There is main focus on dance, because of the level of spatial awareness and expression of the movements. The boundaries of architecture are explored by means of empirical methods. The experienced space is based on the subject’s practice but can this embodied experience be handled and moulded by the architect, the so-called designer of spaces? Movements can be considered as an expression drawn …

Why Should States Pay For Prisons, When Local Officials Decide Who Goes There?, W. David Ball Jun 2011

Why Should States Pay For Prisons, When Local Officials Decide Who Goes There?, W. David Ball

Faculty Publications

In the United States, states typically pay for prisons, even though the decisions that lead to prison admissions — arresting, charging, and sentencing — are made by local officials. The practice of state subsidies is relatively recent: there were no state prisons in the early part of the country’s history, and even as state institutions began to be developed, they largely supported themselves financially, rendering the notion of subsidies moot. Given the political economy of local decision-making, local preferences are unlikely to result in optimally-sized state prison populations. This Article suggests that since state prison subsidies may not be desirable …

Rethinking The Nature Of The Firm: The Corporation As A Governance Object, Peer Zumbansen Jun 2011

Rethinking The Nature Of The Firm: The Corporation As A Governance Object, Peer Zumbansen

Seattle University Law Review

This Article attempts to bridge two discourses—corporate governance and contract governance. Regarding the latter, a group of scholars has recently set out to develop a more comprehensive research agenda to explore the governance dimensions of contractual relations, highlighting the potential of contract theory to develop a more encompassing theory of social and economic transactions. While a renewed interest in the contribution of economic theory for a concept of contract governance drives one dimension of this research, another part of this undertaking has been to move contract theory closer to theories of social organization. Here, these scholars emphasize the “social” or …
