47 | The Ramat Bet Shemesh Regional Project: Landscapes Of Settlement From The Paleolithic To The Ottoman Periods, Yehuda Dagan

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

The Ramat Bet Shemesh Project was a high-resolution regional study of an area in the Judean Shephelah designated for urban developments, which aimed at recording the ancient remains as well as the natural environment that were to be completely destroyed. The first volume, the Gazetteer (IAA Reports 46), described all the sites surveyed during the project, as well as the results of 100 small-scale excavations. This second volume presents the methodology and field techniques of the project, the ecological and environmental studies, the use of GIS technology, and discussions of the settlement patterns and agricultural activity of each period, as …

Interdisciplinary Authentic Assessment: Cognitive Expectations And Student Performance, Jenni M. Taylor Jan 2011

Interdisciplinary Authentic Assessment: Cognitive Expectations And Student Performance, Jenni M. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This two-pronged quantitative, non-experimental design study, conducted at an urban secondary school of 472 students in Los Angeles, California, was designed to gain understanding of the potential impact of interdisciplinary authentic assessment and the manner and complexity with which such tasks push students to think. Since limited research has been conducted around the results of such practices at the secondary school level, this research serves as a pilot study to examine (a) cognitive levels of Bloom's Taxonomy present within four interdisciplinary authentic assessment tasks, following an ongoing professional development intervention and (b) student performance on these assessments of varying cognitive …

Multi-Element Regulation Of The Tropical Forest Carbon Cycle, Alan R. Townsend, Cory C. Cleveland, Benjamin Z. Houlton, Caroline B. Alden, James W. C. White Jan 2011

Multi-Element Regulation Of The Tropical Forest Carbon Cycle, Alan R. Townsend, Cory C. Cleveland, Benjamin Z. Houlton, Caroline B. Alden, James W. C. White

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Tropical ecosystems dominate the exchange of carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and terrestrial biosphere, yet our understanding of how nutrients control the tropical carbon (C) cycle remains far from complete. In part, this knowledge gap arises from the marked complexity of the tropical forest biome, in which nitrogen, phosphorus, and perhaps several other elements may play roles in determining rates of C gain and loss. As studies from other ecosystems show, failing to account for nutrient–C interactions can lead to substantial errors in predicting how ecosystems will respond to climate and other environmental changes. Thus, although resolving the complex nature …

Destructive Coordination, Charles K. Whitehead Jan 2011

Destructive Coordination, Charles K. Whitehead

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

An important goal of financial risk regulation is promoting coordination. Law's coordinating function minimizes costly conflict and encourages greater uniformity among market participants. Likewise, privately developed market standards, such as standard-form contracts and rules incorporated into widely-used vendor technology systems, help to lower transaction costs partly by increasing coordination.

By contrast, much of financial economics is premised on a world without coordination. Basic tools used to manage financial risk presume that changes in asset prices follow a random walk and individuals buy and sell assets independently. Thus, a bedrock premise of traditional risk management is that a portfolio manager’s actions …

Water Budget On Various Land Use Areas Using Narr Reanalysis Data In Florida, Chi-Han Cheng, Fidelia Nnadi Jan 2011

Water Budget On Various Land Use Areas Using Narr Reanalysis Data In Florida, Chi-Han Cheng, Fidelia Nnadi

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

1992 to 2002 data from North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) were used to investigate water budget on five land use areas: urban, forest, agriculture, lake, and wetland in the state of Florida, USA. The data were evaluated based on the anomalies of rainfall, evaporation, and soil moisture from the average condition. The anomalies were used to investigate the effect of extreme conditions on water budget parameters for various land uses in both northeast and south of Florida. The results showed that extreme events such as La Nina strongly affected the water budget on land-use areas in both regions as the …

Rawls's Theory Of Justice A Necessary Extension To Environmentalism, Andrew Greene Jan 2011

Rawls's Theory Of Justice A Necessary Extension To Environmentalism, Andrew Greene

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

John Rawls‟s stated intergenerational justice scheme, known as the just-savings principle, does not include an institutional concern for the environment and is therefore incomplete and incapable of maintaining meaningfully just relations between generations. The theory‟s emphasis on economic theory and capital accumulation demonstrates a misinterpretation of environmental issues and concerns as well as their underlying causes and repercussions. This lapse in Rawls‟s intergenerational scheme exposes flaws in his larger theory of justice by leaving the stability of society in question and placing arbitrary burdens on generations and peoples without institutional recourse. However, by supplementing justice as fairness (JAF) with Rawls‟s …

A Standardized Design For Quagga Mussel Monitoring In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Wai Hing Wong, Shawn Gerstenberger, Jennell M. Miller, Craig Palmer, Bryan Moore

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

The discovery of quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) in Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, on January 6, 2007 is the first known occurrence of dreissenid species in the western United States. This study developed elements of a cost-effective and standardized quagga mussel-monitoring program for Lake Mead using preliminary data to arrive at statistically based numbers of sampling sites. To represent the abundance of adult/juvenile quagga mussels in Lake Mead’s heterogeneous floor with 95% confidence, a stratified simple random sampling design revealed a requirement of 41 samples from hard substrates (i.e., rocky areas) and 97 samples from soft substrates (i.e., sandy and muddy …

Experiences In Coexistence And Anti-Normalization Phenomenological Case Study: Arab Alumni Of The Arava, Lauren Rauch Jan 2011

Experiences In Coexistence And Anti-Normalization Phenomenological Case Study: Arab Alumni Of The Arava, Lauren Rauch

Capstone Collection

Many Arabs are confronted with the accusation that they are “normalizing with the Zionist enemy” when they participate in people-to-people programs with Israeli Jews. This paper explores the phenomenon of Arab participation in the Arava Institute of Environmental Studies, an academic coexistence program in Israel, and how the participants relate their experiences to the anti-normalization discourse. At the Arava Institute, Palestinian and Jordanians study and live alongside Israelis; Arab participants are often labeled “normalizers” within their society, a term associated with being a traitor or collaborator. From an anti-normalization perspective, people-to-people programs promote a positive public image of Israel and …

Changing Hearts: The Future Of The Environmental Movement, Emily Casey Jan 2011

Changing Hearts: The Future Of The Environmental Movement, Emily Casey

Global Tides

For many, the environmental movement is a consumer fad with very little intellectual or emotional investment. Generally, sustainability is deemed a “good thing” but given low priority at both the personal level and the public policy level. In this paper, I argue that environmentalism must be modified to meet the needs of the general populace in order to gain momentum as a contemporary political movement. In other words, I examine how the environmental movement can attract the massive number of active members necessary to change public policy and conclude that this movement will need to adapt to the public in …

Climate Change, Forests, And Federalism: Seeing The Treaty For The Trees, Blake Hudson Jan 2011

Climate Change, Forests, And Federalism: Seeing The Treaty For The Trees, Blake Hudson

University of Colorado Law Review

Despite numerous attempts over the past two decadesincluding, most recently, the Copenhagen climate discussions in late 2009-international forest and climate negotiations have failed to produce a legally binding treaty addressing global forest management activities. This failure is due in large part to a lack of U.S. leadership. Though U.S. participation in ongoing forest and climate negotiations is essential, scholars have not fully explored the potential limiting effects of federalism on the United States' treaty power in the area of forest management. Such an exploration is necessary given the debate among constitutional law scholars regarding the scope of the treaty power, …

Water Wars Down South An Analysis Of The Tri-State Battle Over The Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin, Marilyn Payne Jan 2011

Water Wars Down South An Analysis Of The Tri-State Battle Over The Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin, Marilyn Payne

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the southeastern water war among Alabama, Georgia, and Florida over the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. It focuses on the political and legal issues at hand, while analyzing the circumstances of each that contributed to the current resource battle. I argue that the political factors associated with the ACF River Basin, coupled with the environmental and economic aspects at stake, have over time led to an inefficient use of water that created the battle over the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. Furthermore, this thesis examines the three main possibilities for a resolution: congressional apportionment, judicial apportionment and interstate compact. After analyzing …

Rescuing The Strong Precautionary Principle From Its Critics, Noah M. Sachs Jan 2011

Rescuing The Strong Precautionary Principle From Its Critics, Noah M. Sachs

Law Faculty Publications

The Strong Precautionary Principle, an approach to risk regulation that shifts the burden of proof on safety, can provide a valuable framework for preventing harm to human health and the environment. Cass Sunstein and other scholars, however, have consistently criticized the Principle, rejecting it as paralyzing, inflexible, and extreme.

In this reassessment of the Strong Precautionary Principle, I highlight the significant benefits of the Principle for risk decision making, with the aim of rescuing the Principle from its dismissive critics. The Principle sends a clear message that firms must research the health and environmental risks of their products, before harm …

The Effect Of Risk, Time Preference, And Poverty On The Impacts Of Forest Tenure Reform In China, Karen Anne Sullivan Jan 2011

The Effect Of Risk, Time Preference, And Poverty On The Impacts Of Forest Tenure Reform In China, Karen Anne Sullivan

Open Access Dissertations

Forest degradation has steadily increased throughout much of the world. The cause of this continued degradation is complex and multifaceted but there is a growing realization that a key cause, especially in developing countries, is insecure rights to ownership and use of forest resources. This realization coupled with a call for pro-poor forestry policy has stimulated the recent trend in forest policy toward strengthening property rights for forest resources by transferring property rights from the state to communities and individuals, giving them defined rights to manage and extract forest resources. However, a big puzzle remains unsolved—such reforms on property rights …
