Evolution Of Natural History Information In The 21st Century – Developing An Integrated Framework For Biological And Geographical Data, Deborah A. Reusser, Henry Lee Ii Jan 2011

Evolution Of Natural History Information In The 21st Century – Developing An Integrated Framework For Biological And Geographical Data, Deborah A. Reusser, Henry Lee Ii

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Threats to marine and estuarine species operate over many spatial scales, from nutrient enrichment at the watershed/estuarine scale to invasive species and climate change at regional and global scales. To help address research questions across these scales, we provide here a standardized framework for a biogeographical information system containing queriable biological data that allows extraction of information on multiple species, across a variety of spatial scales based on species distributions, natural history attributes and habitat requirements. As scientists shift from research on localized impacts on individual species to regional and global scale threats, macroecological approaches of studying multiple species over …

A Trans-Dimensional Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo Algorithm For Model Assessment Using Frequency-Domain Electromagnetic Data, Burke J. Minsley Jan 2011

A Trans-Dimensional Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo Algorithm For Model Assessment Using Frequency-Domain Electromagnetic Data, Burke J. Minsley

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A meaningful interpretation of geophysical measurements requires an assessment of the space of models that are consistent with the data, rather than just a single, ‘best’ model which does not convey information about parameter uncertainty. For this purpose, a trans-dimensional Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is developed for assessing frequency domain electromagnetic (FDEM) data acquired from airborne or ground-based systems. By sampling the distribution of models that are consistent with measured data and any prior knowledge, valuable inferences can be made about parameter values such as the likely depth to an interface, the distribution of possible resistivity values …

Compiling, Synthesizing And Analyzing Existing Boreal Forest Fire History Data In Alaska, Diana L. Olson, James B. Cronan, Donald Mckenzie, Jennifer L. Barnes, Anne E. Camp, Mike Tjoelker, Jennifer Northway, Paige Eagle Jan 2011

Compiling, Synthesizing And Analyzing Existing Boreal Forest Fire History Data In Alaska, Diana L. Olson, James B. Cronan, Donald Mckenzie, Jennifer L. Barnes, Anne E. Camp, Mike Tjoelker, Jennifer Northway, Paige Eagle

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

Wildland fires play a critical role in maintaining the ecological integrity of boreal forests in Alaska. Identifying and maintaining natural fire regimes is an important component of fire management. There are numerous research projects that directly or indirectly address historical fire regimes in the Alaskan boreal forest, but many are unpublished, have many unprocessed dendrochronological (tree age and fire scar) samples, or their data were used for other purposes. Furthermore, no assessment of these data exists to understand how fire has historically affected the boreal forest ecosystems of Alaska. The goal of this project was to compile and synthesize existing …

Development Of An Instrument To Measure Faculty Adherence To The Norms Of Science, Eric D. Motycka Jan 2011

Development Of An Instrument To Measure Faculty Adherence To The Norms Of Science, Eric D. Motycka

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The norms of science of Communalism, Universalism, Disinterestedness, and Organized Skepticism provide a framework for understanding and examining faculty activity related to the triple helix of university, industry, and government relations. Despite the increase in scholarship regarding faculty and the norms of science, there is a lack of research focused on measuring faculty adherence to the norms that is psychometrically valid and reliable. The goal of thisDissertation was to contribute to the literature by developing and testing such an instrument. This instrument differentiates among the norms of Organized Skepticism, Universalism, Commercialism, and Scientific Puritanism , the latter two being refined …

Feedlot Manure Handling And Application Strategies On Surface Runoff Of Artificial Hormones Applied To Rowcrop Fields, Sagor Biswas, William L. Kranz, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, Terry L. Mader, Charles A. Shapiro, David P. Shelton, Daniel D. Snow, David Tarkalson, Simon Van Donk, Tian Zhang, Steve Ensley

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Hormones are essential to the function and propagation of almost all organisms, yet the environmental fate of hormones is not well understood. Because these substances are so common in nature, the question is not whether they will be found, but rather at what concentrations and in what form (biologically active or inactive) will they be found. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of manure handling and application strategies on artificial hormone losses in runoff through the use of simulated rainfall. In 2008, rainfall simulations were conducted at the Haskell Agricultural Laboratory near Concord, NE (Latitude: 42 …

Review Of Fur, Fortune, And Empire: The Epic History Of The Fur Trade In America, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr. Jan 2011

Review Of Fur, Fortune, And Empire: The Epic History Of The Fur Trade In America, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Faculty Publications & Research

Eric J. Dolin’s Fur, Fortune, and Empire is a concise, engaging, and remarkably comprehensive survey of the American fur trade. Though aimed at a general readership, the author presents a broad-ranging, sophisticated story of the commerce, supported by nearly a hundred pages of citations. The author says that the inspiration for the book came from a passage in James Truslow Adams’s The Founding of New England: “The Bible and the Beaver were the two mainstays of the Plymouth Colony in its early years.” He knew something about Pilgrims and something about the fur trade, but nothing of the Pilgrim fur …

Pay Attention To Biophilia It's In The Flow, Ashley King Jan 2011

Pay Attention To Biophilia It's In The Flow, Ashley King

Theses & ETDs

This study sought to explore the possible relationship between two theories addressing psychological health: Wilsons Biophilia Hypothesis and Csikszentmihalyis Flow. Undergraduate college students played Tetris before viewing either a nature video or a built environment video. After the video, participants completed another game of Tetris and a shortened version of the Flow State Scale. It was hypothesized that contact with nature would restore attention capacity and facilitate the flow experience, leading to a higher level of improvement from pre-test to post-test and also higher scores on the FSS in the nature condition than in the built environment condition. As expected, …

Homegrown Harvest A Beginner's Guide To Small-Scale Edible Gardening, Mallika Nair Jan 2011

Homegrown Harvest A Beginner's Guide To Small-Scale Edible Gardening, Mallika Nair

Theses & ETDs

Small-scale edible gardening is a multifaceted solution to many of the environmental, dietary, social and economic issues of our time. This guide provides information on small scale organic growing methods with the intention of helping new gardeners grow food at home or in a community plot. I used information from new and classic gardening books, websites, magazines, blogs, and scientific articles. I drew from my experience gardening as well as from conversations with other gardeners. This guide consists of ideas, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) instructions, and reviews of products for gardening in small spaces such as balconies, terraces and windows. Methods for …

Teaching To Cultivate Gardening Education Programs In Public Elementary Schools, Andrew Noune Jan 2011

Teaching To Cultivate Gardening Education Programs In Public Elementary Schools, Andrew Noune

Theses & ETDs

In an attempt to explore ways that the educational system can encourage an understanding of food production systems and their effect on the environment and human health, I explore the components of edible school gardening programs. Eight public elementary school programs in a county in southwest Florida were studied by interviewing the facilitating teachers and observing in-class activities. Components related to horticultural procedures, academic connections, and students' home life were identified and analyzed. The findings of this research suggest that in-ground school gardens are likely to contain more horticultural components and academic connections than earth box or hydroponic gardens. Therefore, …

Bioremediation Of Contaminated Effluent An Integrated Approach, Arielle Vicaria Jan 2011

Bioremediation Of Contaminated Effluent An Integrated Approach, Arielle Vicaria

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the use of constructed wetlands to bioremediate effluent from municipal wastewater treatment. An effluent is wastewater, which is released into natural bodies of water from a wide variety of industrial and municipal sources. Polluted effluent that joins fresh water can disturb the self-regulating process of downstream ecosystems. Bioremediation, the use of living organisms such as fungi, plants and bacteria, to degrade environmental pollutants is a promising method for detoxifying aquatic environments. Constructed wetlands provide a practical and environmentally friendly means of treating contaminated wastewaters before release into the environment.

Social Perceptions Of Government Regulated Ecological Managment In Sarasota County Past, Present, And Potential Future Of Tree Ordinances, Dayna Lazarus Jan 2011

Social Perceptions Of Government Regulated Ecological Managment In Sarasota County Past, Present, And Potential Future Of Tree Ordinances, Dayna Lazarus

Theses & ETDs

Rules that require us to consider the health of the environment have been increasingly finding their way into American politics. However, rigid regulations are sometimes more of a monkey wrench in the gears of sustainability than a catalyst for achieving a communitys sustainability goals, especially when regulations require expert knowledge and careful consideration of local conditions. An overall negative social perception of a regulation is one indication that the monkey-wrench phenomenon may be in play. Negative social perception, and any other indication that a regulation is either not working or causing more harm than good, calls for a code review. …

Implementing A Food Waste To Compost Program At The University Of Arkansas: An Economic Feasibility Analysis, Zoe Teague

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The University of Arkansas Fayetteville (UAF) is actively pursuing ways to increase sustainability on campus. Through the establishment of the Sustainability Council and campus centers, multiple projects are attempting to reduce the carbon footprint at UAF. One particular study is designed to eliminate food waste on campus through composting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and project the economic savings of implementing a food waste composting system using Earth Tubs. Earth Tubs are an in-vessel electrical composting system capable of diverting up to 150 pounds of organic material daily with minimal odor. Results suggest that composting food waste …

What Ever Happened To Canadian Environmental Law?, Stepan Wood, Georgia Tanner, Benjamin J. Richardson Jan 2011

What Ever Happened To Canadian Environmental Law?, Stepan Wood, Georgia Tanner, Benjamin J. Richardson

All Faculty Publications

This Article examines the history of Canadian environmental law in order to explain why it has become a laggard in both legal reform and environmental performance. Canadian environmental law has long been of interest to scholars worldwide, yet its record is often poorly understood. The Article contrasts recent developments with the seemingly progressive initiatives of the 1970s, and analyzes these trends in light of their political, economic and governance context, as well as the wider critiques of environmental law. It argues that there is considerable room for Canadian governments to adopt more robust methods of environmental law, including following pioneering …
