A Study Of Riders' Noise Exposure On Bay Area Rapid Transit Trains, Alexis Dinno, Cynthia Powell, Margaret Mary King Feb 2011

A Study Of Riders' Noise Exposure On Bay Area Rapid Transit Trains, Alexis Dinno, Cynthia Powell, Margaret Mary King

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Excessive noise exposure may present a hazard to hearing, cardiovascular and psychosomatic health. Mass transit systems, such as the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, are potential sources of excessive noise. The purpose of this study was to characterize transit noise and riders' exposure to noise on the BART system using three dosimetry metrics. We made 268 dosimetry measurements on a convenience sample of 51 line segments. Dosimetry measures were modeled using linear and non-linear multiple regression as functions of average velocity, tunnel enclosure, flooring, and wet weather conditions, and presented visually on a map of the BART system. This …

Culture-Independent Characterization Of A Novel, Uncultivated Magnetotactic Member Of The Nitrospirae Phylum, Christopher T. Lefevre, Richard B. Frankel, Fernanda Abreu, Ulysses Lins, Dennis A. Bazylinski Feb 2011

Culture-Independent Characterization Of A Novel, Uncultivated Magnetotactic Member Of The Nitrospirae Phylum, Christopher T. Lefevre, Richard B. Frankel, Fernanda Abreu, Ulysses Lins, Dennis A. Bazylinski

Physics

A magnetotactic bacterium, designated strain LO-1, of the Nitrospirae phylum was detected and concentrated from a number of freshwater and slightly brackish aquatic environments in southern Nevada. The closest phylogenetic relative to LO-1 is Candidatus Magnetobacterium bavaricum based on a 91.2% identity in their 16S rRNA gene sequence. Chemical and cell profiles of a microcosm containing water and sediment show that cells of strain LO-1 are confined to the oxic–anoxic interface and the upper regions of the anaerobic zone which in this case, occurred in the sediment. This microorganism is relatively large, ovoid in morphology and usually biomineralizes three braid-like …

Sola In Nature, Yeonhee Choi Feb 2011

Sola In Nature, Yeonhee Choi

Theses

Sola in Nature is an invitation to encounter the internal human experience inspired by nature. Each photograph exhibits different sensibilities; exploring what the psychological self represents in nature through the images. The human mind is like air. We cannot smell, hold, and see the air, but we can feel it when we breathe. We cannot live without it. This thesis transcribes personal experience into a photographic spectacle that provides the public access, with which to examine the sophisticated mind as reflection of the self. Nature is, in this work, considered not only as spiritual existence but also as the psychological …

Urban Environmental Education From A Social-Ecological Perspective: Conceptual Framework For Civic Ecology Education, Keith G. Tidball, Marianne E. Krasny Jan 2011

Urban Environmental Education From A Social-Ecological Perspective: Conceptual Framework For Civic Ecology Education, Keith G. Tidball, Marianne E. Krasny

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

A variety of environmental education practices are emerging to address the needs of an increasingly urban population. Drawing from social-ecological systems and social learning theory, we propose a conceptual framework to stimulate research questions in urban environmental education. More specifically, our conceptual framework focuses on environmental education programs that are nested within and linked to community-based stewardship or civic ecology practices, such as community forestry, streamside restoration, and community gardening. It suggests ways in which educational programs, stewardship practice, and other social-ecological system components and processes interact through feedback loops and other mechanisms, as well as means by which urban …

Assessing The Effects Of The Urban Forest Restoration Effort Of Milliontreesnyc On The Structure And Functioning Of New York City Ecosystems, P. Timon Mcphearson, Michael Feller, Alexander Felson, Richard Karty, Jacqueline W.T. Lu, Matthew I. Palmer, Tim Wenskus Jan 2011

Palmer, Tim Wenskus

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Current forest restoration practices for New York City’s (NYC) MillionTreesNYC Initiative on public parkland include site preparation with extensive invasive species removal and tree and shrub planting with the goal of creating new multi-layered forests. We have launched a long-term investigation of these sites in order to understand the primary physical, chemical, and biological responses of urban ecosystems to MillionTreesNYC forest restoration practices. This research will examine high and low diversity tree and understory planting combinations in permanent experimental forest restoration plots across NYC. The study assesses how the interactions between soil heterogeneity, plant population dynamics, and forest restoration management …

Biological, Social, And Urban Design Factors Affecting Young Street Tree Mortality In New York City, Jacqueline W.T. Lu, Erika S. Svendsen, Lindsay K. Campbell, Jennifer Greenfeld, Jessie Braden, Kristen L. King, Nancy Falxa-Raymond Jan 2011

Biological, Social, And Urban Design Factors Affecting Young Street Tree Mortality In New York City, Jacqueline W.T. Lu, Erika S. Svendsen, Lindsay K. Campbell, Jennifer Greenfeld, Jessie Braden, Kristen L. King, Nancy Falxa-Raymond

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

In dense metropolitan areas, there are many factors including traffic congestion, building development and social organizations that may impact the health of street trees. The focus of this study is to better understand how social, biological and urban design factors affect the mortality rates of newly planted street trees. Prior analyses of street trees planted by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation between 1999 and 2003 (n=45,094) found 91.3% of those trees were alive after two years and 8.7% were either standing dead or missing completely. Using a site assessment tool, a randomly selected sample of 13,405 …

Tambang Dan Perlawanan Rakyat: Studi Kasus Tambang Di Manggarai, Ntt, Max Regus

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Since a little over a decade ago, Mining Corp. had come to maintain a challenging role in the presence of the host government and local indigenous community, particularly landowners. The reflection of tensions and social complexities have become apparent in Manggarai, Flores, NTT (an exception to many advanced countries with indigenous communities). Mining Corp. did not cultivated a favourable relationship with the indigenous local communities. In other words, they tend to have expansive destruction in local communities. In recent years, global corporations have been speaking the language of development. While corporations are increasingly being imputed a major development role by …

Governmentality Dan Perberdayaan Dalam Advokasi Lingkungan: Kasus Lumpur Lapindo, Abdil Mughis Mudhoffir

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This essay examines the social movement within the upturn of environmental problem in ecological disaster case in Sidoarjo. Bringing up the new social movement paradigm, environmental movement is a form of resistance that has never been classified as a Marxist class consciousness social movement. The author argues that Social movement could also be the result of the problem rising from environmental degradation as an effect of state industrialization. As a movement which is not based on determinism of certain class awareness, collaboration turns into important factor of civil society consolidation forces. However, NGO initiative in building alliance with grassroots habitually …

Kaum Miskin Kota, Sampah, Dan Rumah: Studi Tentang Akses Migran Miskin Terhadap Sumber Daya Lingkungan Dan Perumahan Di Tangerang, Rusli Cahyadi

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

A slum or squatter is identified by poor quality of housing and unsanitary conditions. The common agreed explanation of the conditions is to link the rapid growth of population, poverty and environment limitations. It implies that, internal factors of the poor people was the major cause the environmental deteorization. This article is an attemp to explore another explanation. It argued that external factors, i.e. government polices, are the ultimate cause. Using the case of waste management and urban housing supply system, the article propose a different view. The poor and unsanitary housing was the result of lack and absence of …
