A rating of Silver puts UNLV in great company – with …

Groundwater Research In Middle Earth, Thomas Lapoint Jun 2011

Groundwater Research In Middle Earth, Thomas Lapoint

Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies

My senior project focused on studying saltwater intrusion in a coastal town of New Zealand. I feel lucky that I was able to travel to such a distant place, conduct research that was insightful and interesting, and immerse myself in an international culture all in the name of my education. As a Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies student, I aim to analyze not only the cultural differences and similarities that the foreign environment offers to me but also the detailed, technical, engineering aspect of my research. I believe that my education should be approached with a well rounded perspective that …

Transboundary Water Issues In The Kura-Araks River Basin, Marianna Khachaturyan, Karina A. Schoengold Jun 2011

Transboundary Water Issues In The Kura-Araks River Basin, Marianna Khachaturyan, Karina A. Schoengold

Cornhusker Economics

Water resources that are shared across boundaries by different states or countries are referred to as “transboundary” or “international” water resources. Worldwide, there are about 263 international basins that are shared by two or more countries, with 40 percent of the world population living on these international basins (Giordano and Wolf, 2003). This is an increase from the 214 basins that were identified in 1978, due to better mapping technology and newly emerging nations. For example, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 created 15 new independent nations and simultaneously created new transboundary water resources.

Factors For Improved Fish Passage Waterway Construction, David N. Sillars, Hamid Moradkhani, Nicholas Tymvios, Trevor D. Smith Jun 2011

Factors For Improved Fish Passage Waterway Construction, David N. Sillars, Hamid Moradkhani, Nicholas Tymvios, Trevor D. Smith

TREC Final Reports

Streambeds are important fish passageways in Oregon; they provide for the necessary habitats and spawning cycles of a healthy fish population. Oregon state law requires that hydraulic structures located in water properly provide fish passage. Increasingly stringent state and federal regulations apply to these fish passageways, and designers must become more cognizant of conditions over a range of flows to accommodate fish movement and avoid expensive structural failure of these passageways. Fish passage structures are built when roads cross streambeds and may include culverts, or bridges. When these structures are built, the streambeds are re-created using a technique called “roughened …

Changing The City Landscape: From Garages To Second Residential Units, Scott Andrew Robidoux

Master's Theses

The City of Santa Maria, located between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara in California, is experiencing rapid population growth, cultural transformation, and growth in household size. The growth rate of the city has been a consistent 20% for the past 20 years. Culturally, more than 70% of the almost 100,000 city residents predominantly identified as Hispanic or Latino in the 2010 census. The household size has consistently increased for the past 20 years; currently it is 3.52 people per household.

An issue which is becoming a growing problem for the city is the prevalence of illegal housing in the …

Exit Surveying Of Interns: Demonstrating Impact On Young Professionals, Cara Muscio Jun 2011

Exit Surveying Of Interns: Demonstrating Impact On Young Professionals, Cara Muscio

Journal of Extension

Documenting impact is becoming increasingly important as funding becomes tighter for Extension programs. An exit survey for interns conducted via an online survey tool is an opportunity to collect information on knowledge and skill gains, as well as document changes in intentions and attitudes about future career paths. An exit survey conducted between 2006-2010 demonstrated increases in knowledge and skills related to coastal science. In addition, the internships enabled students to better define their career goals. There are many activities that we routinely participate in that could benefit from this type of impact data collection in addition to routine evaluation.

Update 2000: Progress And Limitations In Developing A Water Market In California, Peter L. Yolles May 2011

Update 2000: Progress And Limitations In Developing A Water Market In California, Peter L. Yolles

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Water markets have long been proposed for California
as a water management tool to increase water use
efficiency. Variability of precipitation across time and
space, a fast growing population with strong
environmental concerns, a vocal agricultural sector, and
a powerful service economy combine to create pressure
on limited indigenous water supplies. While continued
investments in conservation are needed to continue to
reduce demand-side pressure, California water
policymakers are seeking innovative market-based
solutions to cooperatively and efficiently allocate water.
So far, California has failed to create the key elements
that would support a dynamic water market. This paper
will review efforts …

“Unconventional Supplies” And The Water Dispute Among The Riparians Of The Jordan River Watershed, Jeff Albert May 2011

“Unconventional Supplies” And The Water Dispute Among The Riparians Of The Jordan River Watershed, Jeff Albert

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Proposed resolutions to the Arab-Israeli water conflict
that fail to consider the introduction of alternative
freshwater sources in the not-too-distant future cannot
be taken seriously. Each of three major forms of
freshwater supply augmentation (the “unconventional
supplies”) is likely to be implemented on a widespread
basis in the region, thereby substantially altering the
regional water balance. These unconventional supplies
are desalination, water imports, and the reclamation of
wastewater. This paper assesses the relevance of the
unconventional supplies in achieving regional
accommodation over shared and scarce freshwater, with
particular attention to the advantages, disadvantages,
and complexities introduced by wastewater reclamation.

Planting Seeds For An Improved Agrifood System? Linking The Aims Of The Alternative Agrifood Movement To Executive Action In The First Two Years Of The Obama Administration, K. Glowa, Sarah Carvill, Costanza Rampini May 2011

Planting Seeds For An Improved Agrifood System? Linking The Aims Of The Alternative Agrifood Movement To Executive Action In The First Two Years Of The Obama Administration, K. Glowa, Sarah Carvill, Costanza Rampini

Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies

This paper uses several case studies to look at the dialogic relationship between the Obama administration and the alternative agrifood movement. We evaluate the case studies based on criteria developed from the agroecology literature and literature on food security, agrarianism, and the alternative agrifood movement as a whole. Additionally we compare the policy tools utilized and the funding levels of each of the cases. Our findings suggest that the Obama administration is committed to tackling issues of food security and promoting the well-being of small- and mid-scale farmers and their local agrifood economies. Deconsolidation of large agribusiness, equitable trade, and …

Every Day Is Earth Day: Using A Latent Curriculum To Develop An Ethic Of Sustainability Among College Students, Robert Longwell-Grice, Rebecca Nordensten May 2011

Every Day Is Earth Day: Using A Latent Curriculum To Develop An Ethic Of Sustainability Among College Students, Robert Longwell-Grice, Rebecca Nordensten

New York Journal of Student Affairs

As educators, colleges are in a unique position to inform future leaders about environmental issues. This paper reviews a specific plan for developing an ethic of care for the environment in students, based on the work of Aldo Leopold. The plan focuses on the latent curriculum, and argues that divisions of student affairs are best suited to develop it.

Market-Driven Development In Frontier Ecologies, Dolly Daftary May 2011

Market-Driven Development In Frontier Ecologies, Dolly Daftary

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation investigates the interaction of market-based development policy with democratic decentralization in ecological frontiers in western India inhabited by the vast majority of the country's poor. The study explores how the leaders of elected local bodies called panchayats who are driven by the imperatives of broad-based distribution deliver upwardly distributive capital-intensive development in resource-poor communities during a period of state-neoliberalization. On the basis of eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in eastern Gujarat, the study explores how the implication of panchayats- the world's largest system of democratic politics- in large-scale politics shapes the distribution of material resources in resource-dependent communities. …

Is Ecuador's Refinery Of The Pacific On Track?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

In 2008, PDVSA and PetroEcuador agreed to build the "Eloy Alfaro Delgado" Refinery of the Pacific, which reportedly will be the only high-conversion plant on Latin America's Pacific coast. The facility will require an investment of $12 billion, of which Venezuela and Ecuador have so far committed $3 billion. On March 9, Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa announced that more money would be distributed to accelerate the manufacturing of construction equipment. Is preliminary work on the refinery on track to be ready by 2015? Are the right plans in place for the refinery to attract the necessary investment and who would …

The Superfund Program Past And Present Funding Implications, Nicole Franklin May 2011

The Superfund Program Past And Present Funding Implications, Nicole Franklin

Theses and Dissertations

The present research examines the impact of not reauthorizing the Superfund taxes on the operations of the program. EPA NPL site status data were obtained from the EPA CERCLIS database for analysis in this study. Data were selected for the fiscal years 1981 to 2009 in four NPL listing status categories: proposal to the NPL, final NPL listing, deletion from the NPL, and achievement of construction completion. Since the Superfund tax expired in 1995, data from the 1981 to 1995 fiscal years and data from the 1996 to 2009 fiscal years were analyzed to determine if there were mean differences …
