Effects Of Weathering On Aromatic Compounds In Beach Tars From The Deepwater Horizon Disaster, Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Usa, Michael A. Kruge

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Operators aboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform lost control of the Macondo No. 1 well about 90 km southwest of the Louisiana coast on April 20, 2010, leading to a catastrophic release of ca. 550 Gg of crude oil over the next 86 days [1]. Oil from the spill soon found its way to nearby coastal areas, leaving tarry deposits on beaches and marshes. Oil was reported on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama (180 km northeast of the well) on June 5 and the relatively fresh sample discussed herein (GSA) was collected that same day. Oil reached the beach …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is broad consensus regarding the health impact of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, yet considerable ambiguity exists about the nature and consequences of thirdhand smoke (THS). We introduce definitions of THS and THS exposure and review recent findings about constituents, indoor sorption-desorption dynamics, and transformations of THS; distribution and persistence of THS in residential settings; implications for pathways of exposure; potential clinical significance and health effects; and behavioral and policy issues that affect and are affected by THS. Physical and chemical transformations of tobacco smoke pollutants take place over time scales ranging from seconds to months and include …

Estimating Water Supply Arsenic Levels In The New England Bladder Cancer Study, John R. Nuckols, Laura E. Beane-Freeman, Jay H. Lubin, Matthew S. Airola, Dalsu Baris, Joseph D. Ayotte, Anne Taylor, Chris Paulu, Margaret R. Karagas, Joanne Colt Sep 2011

Estimating Water Supply Arsenic Levels In The New England Bladder Cancer Study, John R. Nuckols, Laura E. Beane-Freeman, Jay H. Lubin, Matthew S. Airola, Dalsu Baris, Joseph D. Ayotte, Anne Taylor, Chris Paulu, Margaret R. Karagas, Joanne Colt

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Ingestion of inorganic arsenic in drinking water is recognized as a cause of bladder cancer when levels are relatively high (≥ 150 µg/L). The epidemiologic evidence is less clear at the low-to-moderate concentrations typically observed in the United States. Accurate retrospective exposure assessment over a long time period is a major challenge in conducting epidemiologic studies of environmental factors and diseases with long latency, such as cancer.

Objective: We estimated arsenic concentrations in the water supplies of 2,611 participants in a population-based case–control study in northern New England.

Methods: Estimates covered the lifetimes of most study participants and were …

Survey Report : Understanding The Preconceptions Of Local Citizens In Tuen Mun Regarding Waste Management, Office Of Service-Learning, Lingnan University

OSL Research Report 研究報告

As a highly developed city, it is surprising to find that proper waste management behavior has not yet been well-established in Hong Kong. In order to investigate the causes of this phenomenon, a study with a sample size of 1,001 was conducted. It has been found that most of the respondents were willing to participate in waste separation at the source, and the majority of them to separate waste were because of environmental protection reason, which contradicts the phenomenon seen in the landfill. The gap between the finding of the study and reality may be due to the fact that …

Interdisciplinary Campus, Interdisciplinary World: Reshaping Higher Education For The 21st Century, Editorial Staff

New Science

In recent years, interdisciplinary fields have increased in academia. Some, such as biomedical science and genomics, are pairings of disciplines that, through their combined knowledge, have created new fields with unique focuses. Others, such as urban studies and gender studies, combine politics, social science and history to create fields that educate the public and inform policymakers. In her book, Creating Interdisciplinary Campus Cultures, Julie Thompson Klein, Ph.D., professor of humanities in Wayne State University's Department of English, argues that these and other interdisciplinary fields are among the most important in modern higher education. Through recommendations and examples, the book …

The Valles Caldera: Recreationists' Perspectives On Access And Management, Matt Gagnon Aug 2011

The Valles Caldera: Recreationists' Perspectives On Access And Management, Matt Gagnon

Geography ETDs

With the public acquisition of Valles Caldera National Preserve in 2000, Congress granted management to a Board of Trustees, a unique experiment in public land management. Ten years into the experiment, the trust model has been failing to meet certain management objectives and is under pressure by outdoor recreationists to provide greater public access to this treasured piece of land in New Mexico. Pressure has become so great that the United States Senators from New Mexico have introduced legislation, the Valles Caldera National Preserve Management Act, which would transfer management to the National Park Service. To address this blossoming issue, …

Getting “Greener”: Lawrence’S Second Solar Array Installed On Hiett Hall, Lawrence University

Press Releases

Lawrence’s utility bill and carbon footprint both will get a little smaller thanks to the recent installation of a 20-kilowatt solar panel on the roof of Hiett Hall. Through the efforts of Green Roots to secure funding for the project, approximately $65,000 of the solar panel array’s $77,000 cost was covered by grants and rebates from WE Energies, Wisconsin Focus on Energy and Solar Innovations Inc.

The estimated payback on the project’s initial investment is approximately six years with an expected useful life span of the panels of 30-40 years.

The Hiett Hall installation is the second solar panel array …

Arctic Sea Ice: Satellite Observations, Global Climate Model Performance, And Future Scenarios, Tracy S. Rogers Aug 2011

Arctic Sea Ice: Satellite Observations, Global Climate Model Performance, And Future Scenarios, Tracy S. Rogers

Natural Resources

This thesis examined Arctic sea ice trends through observational records and model-derived scenarios. A regional analysis of Arctic sea ice observations 1980-2008 identified regional trends similar to the pan-Arctic. However, winter maximum (March) extent in the Atlantic quadrant declined faster. Through an analysis of Atlantic Ocean temperatures and Arctic winds, we concluded that melting sea ice extent may result in increased Atlantic Ocean temperatures, which feeds back to further reductions in Atlantic quadrant extent. Further, Arctic winds do not appear to drive Atlantic ice extent. We evaluated performance of 13 Global Climate Models, reviewing retrospective (1980-2008) sea ice simulations and …

Coca And Conservation: Cultivation, Eradication, And Trafficking In The Amazon Borderlands, David S. Salisbury, C. Fagan Aug 2011

Coca And Conservation: Cultivation, Eradication, And Trafficking In The Amazon Borderlands, David S. Salisbury, C. Fagan

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

The cultivation and traffic of coca, Erythrolxylum coca, and coca derivatives remain understudied threats to the conservation of the Amazon rainforest. Currently the crop is transforming land use and livelihoods in the ecologically and culturally rich borderlands of Amazonian Peru. The isolated nature of this region characterized by indigenous populations (both settled and uncontacted), conservation units, resource concessions, and a lack of state presence provides fertile ground for the boom and bust cycle of coca production and facilitates the international transport of the product to neighboring Brazil. This paper explores the social and environmental impacts of coca production, eradication, and …

Rumbling In The Benthos: Acoustic Ecology Of The California Mantis Shrimp Hemisquilla Californiensis, E. Staaterman, C. Clark, A. Gallagher, M. Devries, T. Claverie, S. Patek

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Although much research has focused on acoustic mapping and exploration of the benthic environment, little is known about the acoustic ecology of benthic organisms, particularly benthic crustaceans. Through the use of a coupled audio–video system, a hydrophone array, and an autonomous recording unit, we tested several hypotheses about the field acoustics of a benthic marine crustacean, Hemisquilla californiensis. Living in muddy burrows in southern California, these large mantis shrimp produce low frequency ‘rumbles’ through muscle vibrations. First, we tested whether acoustic signals are similar in the field and in the laboratory, and discovered that field-produced rumbles are more acoustically and …
