Preservation, Passivity, And Pessimism, Sheila Lintott

Many committed and passionate environmental thinkers currently champion restoration as an appropriate and positive model for human-nature interaction and interdependence. Recent philosophical defenses of restoration sidestep the issues that have been raised about the possibility of restoring degraded nature to a state that is identical, ontologically or evaluatively, to some pre-degraded state. Informed by feminist theory, I expose and explore some problematic assumptions and associations found in common defenses of restoration and defend the thesis that preservation is the more promising avenue to character remediation and the forging of a harmonious human-nature culture. The GVSU University Libraries has responded in the last five years to internal and external emphases on assessing student learning outcomes and our contributions to student learning. We’ve conducted a higher-level information literacy assessment, and have made a priority of developing information literacy tools for use by classroom faculty. We have twice administered SAILS, the "Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills," to provide us with a broad benchmark measure of student IL skills against a cohort of our institutional peers. We discovered that large scale efforts such as SAILS can be at odds with our approach to IL, proving to …

A plethora of literature discusses the flattening of the world we live in (Friedman, 2007) and the need for teachers to educate K-12 students for global learning. However, the literature is critically lacking in empirical evidence in how this is to take place in classrooms. This creative independent study project began as a photo documentation of the environment along a two-week hiking trip on the Great South West Walk in Victoria. It developed into a lesson in experiential education in nature and environmental education through children’s literature that ultimately produced a photographically illustrated children’s story called The Future of Cobboboonee. The story, written in poetry, takes the main characters on an adventure into an unfamiliar world in search of more space for expanding their population. Ultimately, they learn lessons of sustainability and conclude that they must conserve their home, for it is all they have. …

I chose to conduct a dual internship with Environment Tasmania and Ocean Planet. Although I was located in the ET office and conducted participant observation within that environment, I specifically worked on the Ocean Planet campaign to promote marine conservation efforts throughout Tasmania. I was drawn to this internship because the oceans are often disregarded within the environmental movement despite the fact that they are the key to life on earth and are in a degraded state. My research asks: what are the lived experiences of female farmers within the hegemonic construction of the Dutch farmer and how have their roles shifted through time? Popular culture has implanted stereotypes that most female farmers are uneducated, low-class individuals but the six women whom I interviewed present life stories that complicate this. How did these women come into their roles as farmers? Once they became such entrepreneurs, what were their challenges in a potentially male-dominated profession? The andean tapir (Tapirus pinchaque) is a threatened species, in Ecuador it is considered in critical danger of extinction(Cr). In the town of Oyacachi located within the boarders of the National Park Cayambe-Coca on the eastern cordillera of the Andes of Ecuador, a study was created analyzing the fecal contents of T. pinchaque. The study was carried out during the month of November, 2011 by walking 4 transects once ever week where data was collected on observations of fenology and fauna. Along the transects feces samples were collected and the location where they were found was described. …

In the fall of 2011, the Environmental Studies capstone class led by Professor Rutherford Platt was asked to write Gettysburg College’s first Sustainability Plan. The goal of the plan was to develop specific sustainable practices for the campus that were related to the three pillars of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental, and how integrating diligent sustainable practices into each of these respected pillars will result in a more conscious campus, community, and future. Twenty years ago, Stange and her husband traded a modest New Jersey house for seven square miles of overgrazed prairie and set out to right the wrongs done to a place that had been mismanaged ecologically as well as environmentally. The restoration begins disastrously with llamas before it proceeds to success with bison. Her narration includes her own experiences, but most of her essays are serious, in-depth studies of the broader topics that constitute life in the great grasslands spreading across the interior of the country. Bulk depositional fluxes of ⁷Be and ²¹⁰Pb in precipitation measured over a period of 16 months (April 2009–July 2010) in Huelva, Spain varied between 5.6 and 186 Bq m⁻² month⁻¹ (annual mean: 834 Bq m⁻² year⁻¹) and 0.8 and 8.1 Bq m⁻² month⁻¹ (annual mean: 59 Bq m⁻² year⁻¹), respectively, with the lowest depositional fluxes occurring during dry summer months. Quantitative evaluation of the precipitation-normalized seasonal depositional fluxes of ⁷Be and ²¹⁰Pb indicates that the enrichment factor in winter is < 1.0 while in 2010 spring, it is significantly higher than 1, possibly indicating input of air from the stratosphere-troposphere exchange (for ⁷Be).
