Climate Change And The Conservation Of Archaeological Sites: A Review Of Impacts Theory, Caithleen Daly

This article identifies the current state of knowledge in the literature regarding the possible impacts of future climatic change on archaeological sites and ensembles. Drawing on the literature review a matrix of potential impacts is collated to provide a simplified overview. This theoretical ‘menu’ is then tested by applying it to a vulnerability assessment of the World Heritage site of Skellig Michael in Ireland. The case study results reveal some knowledge gaps, particularly in regard to the impacts of climate change on buried archaeological remains.

Environmental Impact Comparison Of Distributed And Centralized Manufacturing Scenarios, Lionel Senyana
Theses
Centralized manufacturing and distributed manufacturing are two fundamentally different methods for producing components. This work describes a centralized manufacturing scenario in which parts are produced via forging and finish machining at one central location and are then shipped to the end user. The distributed manufacturing model involves a scenario in which an additive manufacturing process (Electron Beam Melting) is used to produce parts to near net shape with minimal finish machining. Because the process doesn't require molds or dies, production can take place in small production quantities "on demand" at job shops located close to the end user with little …

Historical Vegetation Of Central Southwest Oregon, Based On Glo Survey Notes : Final Report To Usdi Bureau Of Land Management, Medford District, O. Eugene Hickman, John A. Christy

Historical vegetation at the time of European settlement is of great interest to both the public and land managers, but is poorly documented. One source of data are the earliest land survey records of the General Land Office (GLO). Rectangular township surveys in Southwest Oregon were initiated in the mid 1850’s as settlers began to claim homesteads in the Bear Creek Valley surrounding what is now Medford. We examined GLO land survey field notes and plats (maps) accompanying the surveys, transcribed GLO landscape data into an Access database, and classified the data set into very general vegetation types for mapping. …

Green Economy Does Not Necessarily Mean Sustainability, Adriana Sánchez
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
A number of multinational corporations have adopted the concept of a "green economy," a model that allows the private sector to implement practices that save energy and reduce pollution. These corporations have not hesitated in using the terms "green" or "sustainable" in their mission statements and in marketing products ranging from shampoo to hydroelectric projects. And while there are some good-faith efforts to promote good environmental practices, critics argue that the moves are more cosmetic and that the bottom line remains profit and not sustainability.

Hybrid Veggies & Mixed Kids: Ecocriticism And Race In Ruth Ozeki's Pastoral Heartlands, Melissa Eriko Poulsen
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
This paper explores the troping of racial categories and mixed race bodies in Ruth Ozekis All Over Creation (2003) and My Year of Meats (1999). Moving through both transnational and local space, Ozekis writes an ecocritical pastoral text in order to resist representations of people of mixed race stemming from nineteenth century racial theory. Drawing attention to the consumption of food within and across national borders, whether genetically modified potatoes or hormone-infused beef, Ozeki simultaneously highlights the uncritical consumption of the language of biology around the mixed race body. Linkages Between East Antarctic Ice Sheet Extent And Southern Ocean Temperatures Based On A Pliocene High‐Resolution Record Of Ice‐Rafted Debris Off Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, Sandra Passchier

[1] Ice‐rafted debris mass accumulation rates (IRD MAR) at a drill site on the Antarctic continental margin are investigated to evaluate the linkages between East Antarctic Ice Sheet extent and Southern Ocean temperatures in the early to mid‐Pliocene. ODP Site 1165 is within 400 km of the Antarctic coastline and in the direct pathway of icebergs released by the Amery Ice Shelf. The Amery Ice Shelf is the largest ice shelf in East Antarctica and it buttresses the Lambert Glacier drainage system, which accounts for 14% of the outflow from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet.
