After The Smoke Clears: Examining Curricular Approaches To Environmental Education In Bhopal, India, R Iyengar, Monisha Bajaj Jan 2011

After The Smoke Clears: Examining Curricular Approaches To Environmental Education In Bhopal, India, R Iyengar, Monisha Bajaj

School of Education Faculty Research

This article examines approaches to environmental education in Bhopal, India. It is an attempt to understand how much environmental education as a topic has been incorporated into formal curricula. An analysis of state and national syllabi indicates a focus on conventional, natural sciences approaches to the environment, thus neglecting the social science aspects of education for sustainable development across all grade levels. Environmental disasters are given a very general treatment with no contextual link to incidents like the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984. Social dimensions like environmental citizenship are also minimally mentioned. Finally, the article highlights the large gap between …

Understanding Self And Society Through The Visual Arts, Catherine Melendez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

There are growing concerns that traditional public schools fail in giving children a sound basis of values to prepare them to think critically and take responsible roles in society. This capstone project focused on using the rich resource of contemporary art to engage students in a discourse about present day social issues, and their relation to personal values and ethics. The project was comprised of five workshop classes held at the Boys and Girls Club in Santa Cruz for children ages eleven to thirteen. Each class was centered around a contemporary artist, or collective group of artists that have a …

How Much Clinic For How Many Students?: Examining The Decision To Offer Clinics For One Semester Or An Academic Year, Kele Stewart

Articles

Many law schools are engaged in curricular reform aimed at more effectively preparing students for practice. Two publications that have influenced these reform efforts, Best Practices for Legal Education and the Carnegie Foundation's report Educating Lawyers: Preparation for the Profession of Law, suggest that there should be more clinical opportunities. With limited resources, there is an apparent tension between providing live-client clinics to as many students as possible versus a deeper clinical experience over an academic year. This Article examines the questions raised by a law school's decision to offer a clinic for one semester or two. In designing …

Fighting Back: Indigenous Mobilization In The Ecuadorian, Peruvian And Brazilian Amazon, Emily Culver Jan 2011

Fighting Back: Indigenous Mobilization In The Ecuadorian, Peruvian And Brazilian Amazon, Emily Culver

Latin American and Latino Studies Honors Papers

Progress, as defined by this thesis, is the continuing placement of profits over human beings. The pursuit of progress in Latin America has its roots in the colonial age when elites created a hierarchical system that served only their own interest and marginalized other members of their populations. Progress is particularly negative for indigenous people in the Amazonian region who find themselves giving up their land, resources and in turn their traditional lifestyles for the benefits of outsiders.

This framework has manifested itself in several examples: oil exploration and exploitation in Ecuador and Peru, rubber in Brazil and later hydroelectric …

Do Environmental Audits Improve Long-Term Compliance: Evidence From Manufacturing Facilities In Michigan, Mary F. Evans, Lirong Liu, Sarah L. Stafford Jan 2011

Do Environmental Audits Improve Long-Term Compliance: Evidence From Manufacturing Facilities In Michigan, Mary F. Evans, Lirong Liu, Sarah L. Stafford

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Using a unique facility-level dataset from Michigan, we examine the effect of environmental auditing on manufacturing facilities’ long-term compliance with U.S. hazardous waste regulations. We also investigate the factors that affect facilities’ decisions to conduct environmental audits and whether auditing in turn affects the probability of regulatory inspections. We account for the potential endogeneity of our audit measure and the censoring of our compliance measure using a censored trivariate probit, which we estimate using simulated maximum likelihood. We find that larger facilities and those subject to more stringent regulations are more likely to audit; facilities with poor compliance records are …

Prevalence, Knowledge, And Concern About Bed Bugs, Mary Beth Kaylor Jan 2011

Prevalence, Knowledge, And Concern About Bed Bugs, Mary Beth Kaylor

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Recent research suggests that the United States and the world are on the verge of a bed bug pandemic. Assumptions have been made that socioeconomic status is not an indicator and that bed bugs are not competent disease vectors. However, little information is available at the local level about the prevalence of bed bugs in private homes. This study aimed to identify prevalence, knowledge, and concern about bed bugs in one village in Ohio. Responses from 96 individuals who completed the Prevalence, Knowledge, and Concern about Bed Bugs (PK CABB) survey were utilized for data analysis. The majority of the …

Engaging With Environmental Justice: Governance, Education And Citizenship., Bernardo Heisler Motta, Michael Cotton Jan 2011

Engaging With Environmental Justice: Governance, Education And Citizenship., Bernardo Heisler Motta, Michael Cotton

Faculty Books

Engaging with Environmental Justice: Governance, Education and Citizenship presents a range of works about the impact of science, economy, laws, education, practice, and policy on social groups and their surrounding environments. The chapters in this E-book go from the philosophical underpinnings of the causes of environmental injustices to case studies of the empirical work of practitioners who faced first hand the successes and failures of environmental practices and research. As a true inter-disciplinary compilation, this volume shows the links and the gaps between theory and practice and between viewpoints and disciplines. It exposes both the current fragility of the current …

Songs Of The Mountains, Songs Of Resistance A Study Of Protest Music Against "King Coal" In Southern Appalachia, Historically And Today, Sara Henry Jan 2011

Songs Of The Mountains, Songs Of Resistance A Study Of Protest Music Against "King Coal" In Southern Appalachia, Historically And Today, Sara Henry

Theses & ETDs

The focus of this project has been compiling a collection of music about mountaintop removal coal mining and the history of coal mining in Southern Appalachia. The songs are ballads, folk, bluegrass, and old time songs of the past and present. Some songs already focused on this important environmental and social justice issue, and others were changed lyrically to encompass this subject. The practice of changing lyrics to suit a new cause has been common in the history of folk music in America. For example, in Mark Allan Jacksons Prophet Singer, he spends part of a chapter outlining the ways …

Madre An Ethnographic Study Of Feminism, Social Change And Women's Human Rights, Erica Lindegren

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an ethnographic exploration of how the staff members of one New York City-based nongovernmental organization, MADRE Inc., effect transnational social change. MADRE is a self-proclaimed womens human rights organization that works with grassroots womens organizations worldwide to provide rights, resources, and results. Using anthropological and feminist theoretical frameworks, I draw from interviews with staff members, observations from my internship experience, and research from MADRE and its partner organizations to analyze how MADRE serves as a conduit for social transformation through two partners in Sudan and Colombia. I examine how feminist goals have informed women's human rights, and …

Toxic Entanglements Florida's Farmworkers And The Fight For Environmental Justice, Samuel Chillaron Jan 2011

Toxic Entanglements Florida's Farmworkers And The Fight For Environmental Justice, Samuel Chillaron

Theses & ETDs

Environmental Justice is the pursuit of equitable treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender and income in questions of environmental regulation, management and public health. This thesis explores the environmental justice issue of pesticide exposure amongst Floridas farmworkers, with an ethnographic and historical focus on the activism of the Farmworker Association of Florida and the former farmworker community of Lake Apopkas muck farms. From the early 1940s to the late 1990s, not only did Lake Apopkas farmworkers endure low wages, substandard living conditions, and exposure to a variety of hazardous pesticides, but were also excluded …
