Access To Green Space In Boston, Jillian Howell
Access To Green Space In Boston, Jillian Howell
Atlas of Maine
The purpose of this project was to use GIS and statistical analyses to explore the relationship between access to green space and race in Boston. Using census data, the city was divided by race and block groups. Block groups were categorized based on whether or not they were adjacent to green space. Findings concluded that races are not equally distributed across adjacent and non adjacent block groups, indicating unequal access to green space.

Dayton, Ohio: A Study, Nolan Nicaise
Dayton, Ohio: A Study, Nolan Nicaise
Honors Theses
The urban forest is an important element of cityscapes today. Urban trees provide a habitat to wildlife populations, create more tolerable city living conditions, and better the lives of residents around them. The urban forest, however, is not distributed equitably to the urban population, and some residents receive more or less of its positive externalities. Montgomery County, Ohio, was chosen as the study site to determine if environmental injustice was present regarding the urban forest. It was found that there was environmental injustice present in Montgomery County, as the density of the urban forest was limited by the educational obtainment …

The Built Environment’S Effect On Obesity In The United States, Charlie Cowell
The Built Environment’S Effect On Obesity In The United States, Charlie Cowell
Major Themes in Economics
Obesity is a growing concern in the United States. Obesity results from eating more calories than one’s body can use as energy per day. To lose weight one must either eat fewer calories or use more energy. Some suggest that certain public amenities may encourage healthy lifestyles. Others suggest public amenities have no effect on personal activity levels. This paper looks at the influence the built environment has on obesity rates in U.S. cities. An Ordinary Least Squares regression model is used and finds that significant characteristics of the built environment include acres of parkland, number of recreation facilities, commute …

Faculty Articles
The Journal of Public Management and Social Policy begins its seventeenth volume by examining various issues that not only impact people today, but have policy implications for future generations. Intergenerational social policy is a critical discussion for academic and practitioners to continually have and we hope this particular issue of JPMSP furthers those discussions. Some underscoring themes found in this issue's articles include housing and human services. Overall, the issue brings together five general articles in the first issue of this seventeenth volume of JPMSP.
A Rights-Based Approach To Global Injustice, Brooke Ackerly
A Rights-Based Approach To Global Injustice, Brooke Ackerly
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Is reflection on global injustice part of the everyday lives of those who live in global privilege? Or does privilege let us wait to raise concerns about justice only when the media bring the graphic images of genocide and tragedy to our family rooms?

Vulnerability, Risk Perception, And Health Profile Of Marginalized People Exposed To Multiple Built-Environment Stressors In Worcester, Massachusetts: A Pilot Project, Timothy Downs, Laurie Ross, Robert Goble, Rajendra Subedi, Sara Greenberg, Octavia Taylor
Sustainability and Social Justice
Millions of low-income people of diverse ethnicities inhabit stressful old urban industrial neighborhoods. Yet we know little about the health impacts of built-environment stressors and risk perceptions in such settings; we lack even basic health profiles. Difficult access is one reason (it took us 30 months to survey 80 households); the lack of multifaceted survey tools is another. We designed and implemented a pilot vulnerability assessment tool in Worcester, Massachusetts. We answer: (1) How can we assess vulnerability to multiple stressors? (2) What is the nature of complex vulnerability-including risk perceptions and health profiles? (3) How can findings be used …

Environmental Equity In Illinois: A County-Level Comparison Of Toxic Releases, Ted Richards '11
The Park Place Economist
A large body of research exists covering a variety of topics that can be classified under environmental justice. Studies examine air pollution, water pollution, and locally unwanted land uses (LULUs) – such as landfills or hazardous waste sites – to conclude whether or not their environmental burdens are shared equally between individuals of different income levels or race. Research has also been done to determine whether TRI facilities are disproportionately located in low-income and minority communities. These take the form of nation-wide studies, state level studies, county level studies, or those that look at specific communities. The purpose of this …

“One Nation, Indivisible”: The Value Of Diversity In Higher Education, Nancy Cantor
“One Nation, Indivisible”: The Value Of Diversity In Higher Education, Nancy Cantor
Chancellor's Collection
For many of us, certainly for me, it seems particularly appropriate to be reflecting today on the value of diversity in higher education from a podium at the University of Michigan. This is a place where many of us crafted a defense of diversity as a critical element of educational excellence in the Supreme Court cases of Gratz and Grutter. The State of Michigan is also a place that has now turned its legislative back on affirmative action to achieve diversity in higher education. Indeed, with the passage of Proposal 2, the State of Michigan joined with many other …

Unjust Enrichment: An Alternative To Tort Law And Human Rights In The Climate Change Context?, Aura Weinbaum
Unjust Enrichment: An Alternative To Tort Law And Human Rights In The Climate Change Context?, Aura Weinbaum
Washington International Law Journal
It is generally accepted within the scholarly international community that global climate change is occurring and is due at least in part to anthropogenic activity. Strategies to mitigate climate change harms and adapt to inevitable climate change-induced consequences are influencing legal, political, and human rights frameworks. Thus far, international litigation attempts to hold emitters accountable have been unsuccessful: Tuvalu’s threat to sue the United States and Australia at the International Court of Justice, and the Inuit’s petition to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights were both hampered by procedural and substantive legal issues. Perhaps in response, the United Nations and …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The advance of remote-sensing technology and data-storage capabilities has progressed in the last decade to commercial multi-sensor data collection. There is a constant need to characterize, quantify and monitor the coastal areas for habitat research and coastal management. In this paper, we present work on seafloor characterization that uses hyperspectral imagery (HSI). The HSI data allows the operator to extend seafloor characterization from multibeam backscatter towards land and thus creates a seamless ocean-to-land characterization of the littoral zone.
