History Of Misunderstanding: The Colonization Of New Zealand, William Rumbold Jan 2011

History Of Misunderstanding: The Colonization Of New Zealand, William Rumbold

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Through examination of first contact between the British Empire and the Maori natives of New Zealand, as well as the failed treaty attempt between the two, I aim to illustrate England’s role in the escalation of conflict between these two cultures. Although at first glance it appears that the war was an eventual escalation of previous tensions, I maintain that British officials in New Zealand had the resources and the knowledge to prevent the New Zealand land war. They used this knowledge to speed up the process of conquest. The British crown was trying to conquer the Maori through ambiguous …

Analysis Of Mutant Manganese-Superoxide Dismutase On The Lifespan Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae"", Sarah Salem Jan 2011

Analysis Of Mutant Manganese-Superoxide Dismutase On The Lifespan Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae"", Sarah Salem

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Previously isolated mutants of the superoxide dismutase 2 gene (SOD2), selected for increased activity in E. coli, were transformed into yeast cells in order to observe their effects on aging. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing were used to confirm that the yeast incorporated the mutant form of the gene. The strains with mutant forms of the SOD2 gene were observed to have decreased growth rates compared to the unmutated strain. Lifespan analyses were then conducted in order to see if yeast with mutant versions of SOD2 had lifespans that differed significantly from those with the unmutated forms of the …

Isolating The Manganese Superoxide Dismutase Gene (Sod2) From T. Scripta"", Jairo Sanchez Jan 2011

Isolating The Manganese Superoxide Dismutase Gene (Sod2) From T. Scripta"", Jairo Sanchez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are molecular oxygen-derived molecules that are exceedingly reactive, often generated as free radical bi-products of mitochondrial respiration, which cause oxidative stress that leads to aging. To avoid the generation of ROS, aerobic organisms have antioxidant defense mechanisms that use enzymes such as Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) to convert the superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. Manganesecontaining SOD (Mn-SOD), a product of the SOD2 gene is found in all eukaryotic organisms in the mitochondrial matrix, including T. scripta (red-eared slider turtle). Extraordinarily, T. scripta can live without oxygen for long periods of time without experiencing adverse effects …

Fundamental Value And Transaction Frequency: A Cross Sectional Study In Residential Lots, Katherine Towers Jan 2011

Fundamental Value And Transaction Frequency: A Cross Sectional Study In Residential Lots, Katherine Towers

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The existence of market bubbles raises questions about economists‘ long held assumptions of rationality, costless arbitrage, and the efficient market hypothesis. I take a theoretical approach to the debate on market efficiency by modeling a ―no-value asset,‖ which are residential vacant lots that cannot be developed. I employ a data set that naturally controls for a number of market characteristics thought to contribute to inefficiency. I find that no-value assets traded persistently during the market upturn, in the early 2000s, suggesting limits to arbitrage. In the absence of inefficiency-causing market characteristics, the behavior of agents is likely the cause. To …

Lysander Spooner, Lifestyle Anarchism, And Jury Nullification, Ed Skrod Jan 2011

Lysander Spooner, Lifestyle Anarchism, And Jury Nullification, Ed Skrod

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Individual anarchism, a social movement of the early nineteenth century, was founded on the principles of self-sovereignty and individualism. One such anarchist, Lysander Spooner, argues in “Vices are not Crimes” that vices should not be criminalized by the State. To do so, “deprive*s+ every man of his… liberty to pursue his own happiness.”1 I argue that Spooner’s essay lays the foundation for “lifestyle anarchism,” the doctrine that all the affairs of human beings within the domain of their lifestyle choices (provided they do not harm the person or property of another), should be managed by individuals or voluntary associations. One …

Studies Towards Synthesis Of Paraconic Acids, Karenia Soto Jan 2011

Studies Towards Synthesis Of Paraconic Acids, Karenia Soto

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Paraconic acids are naturally occurring compounds synthesized by bacteria and fungi. They are known for having antitumor and antibiotic properties. By use of a phasevanishing (PV) halolactonization with PTFE (Teflon) as a phase screen, we were able to synthesize precursors to these compounds. The PV-PTFE halolactonization of alkenoic acids with iodine monochloride gave the corresponding iodolactones, while halolactonization with bromine gave the corresponding bromolactone. Halolactonization of 4-pentenoic acid with water as a solvent also gave good results. Future experiments will explore the synthesis of further precursors by means of a photolytic carbonylation of iodolactone and a phenylation-ruthenium tetroxide oxidation sequence.

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Organometallic Complexes Of Iridium And Iron In Aqueous And Basic Media, Michael Webster-Gardiner Jan 2011

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Organometallic Complexes Of Iridium And Iron In Aqueous And Basic Media, Michael Webster-Gardiner

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The catalytic activation of C-H bonds and the subsequent functionalization of hydrocarbons into heteroatom containing products is an area of fundamental importance in chemistry. Three different iridium pincer complexes for C-H activation were synthesized, IrCl3NNN, IrCl3NNN methyl, IrCl3NNNN (NNN= bis-((benzoimidazol))amine), (NNNmethyl = bis-(benzoimidazol)methyl)amine), and (NNNN = tris-((benzoimidazol))amine). These complexes were analyzed for C-H activation between benzoic acid and KOD/D2O solutions. We found that the C-H activation did not proceed catalytically. Also iron containing derivatives containing similar ligand motifs were synthesized , FeCl3NNNN, FeCl3IPI, FeCl3BPB, FeCl3BPB-OH (IPI = 2,6-diimidizoylpyridine, BPB = 2,6-dibenzoimidizoylpyridine, BPB-OH = 4-hydoxy-2,6,dibenzoimidizoylpyridine) and studied for their reactivity towards …

Three Assassins: Women, Revolution And Violence In Modern World History, Ashleah Zigmond Jan 2011

Three Assassins: Women, Revolution And Violence In Modern World History, Ashleah Zigmond

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This thesis examines three women who committed the unprecedented crime of attempting to assassinate a key male figure in three separate times and places. It involves the government’s and society’s reaction and implications about the role of gender in the violent deeds transforming society at times of revolutionary upheaval. The women examined are Charlotte Corday from eighteenth century France, Vera Zasulich from nineteenth century Russia, and Shi Jianqiao from twentieth century China. These women shared numerous qualities that, when combined, provided the women with the ability to see themselves as equals in the patriarchal societies in which they lived, allowing …

OBJECTIVES: Map of Medicine is an evidence-based online clinical knowledge resource. Procured at significant cost by healthcare providers in the UK, Sweden and Denmark, it is important to establish the beneficial impact that investment has had on healthcare practise and, ultimately, on patient outcomes. The objective of this study is to review the evidence for the impact of the Map of Medicine on clinical practice. METHODS: A systematic review of peer-reviewed and grey literature was conducted. Nine healthcare databases, Google Scholar and Google were searched for articles containing the terms 'map of medicine'. RESULTS: The search identified 133 articles. Eleven …

A Clockwork Orange: The Intersection Between A Dystopia And Human Nature, Samantha Moya Jan 2011

A Clockwork Orange: The Intersection Between A Dystopia And Human Nature, Samantha Moya

Best Student Essays

An archetypal depiction of a dystopia is one dominated by bleakness and roboticism, a totalitarian government enforcing upon the people a lifestyle that lulls them into a state of obedience. Anthony Burgess’ 1963 novel, A Clockwork Orange, is a nightmarish vision of future Britain, one in which behavioral modification is taken to dangerous extremes in the quest for preserving the order of a disconnected society. Management Of Patient Adherence To Medications: Protocol For An Online Survey Of Doctors, Pharmacists And Nurses In Europe, W Clyne, C Mshelia, S Hall, S Mclachlan, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Introduction It is widely recognised that many patients do not take prescribed medicines as advised. Research in this field has commonly focused on the role of the patient in non-adherence; however, healthcare professionals can also have a major influence on patient behaviour in taking medicines. This study examines the perceptions, beliefs and behaviours of healthcare professionals—doctors, pharmacists and nurses—about patient medication adherence. Methods and analysis This paper describes the study protocol and online questionnaire used in a cross-sectional survey of healthcare professionals in Europe. The participating countries include Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, The Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy …
