Inside Out, Kathleen Ann Pheney Jan 2011

Inside Out, Kathleen Ann Pheney

LSU Master's Theses

Because I process my external world internally, I often think of my mind as a vessel-housing my internal reality: fears, demons, curiosities, joys, sorrows, etc. My body of work is comprised of paintings and drawings that present surreal interpretations of these occupants as depicted through line, color, gesture and form and, as such, are true self-portraits in that they bring the “inside out.”

Assessment Alchemy: Transforming Data Into Action--Why It Is Mostly Myth And What To Do About It, Gary R. Brown Jan 2011

Assessment Alchemy: Transforming Data Into Action--Why It Is Mostly Myth And What To Do About It, Gary R. Brown

Office of Academic Innovation Publications

There is evidence that institutions and faculty are doing more to assess their programs and their innovations. But subsequent evidence that assessment and research are useful for guiding productive changes in teaching practice and that they improve the student learning experience remains elusive. This presentation will share the story of several different studies that have produced little impact on practice despite substantial or significant results. In comparison, a few (sometimes small) studies have offered insights and avenues that have demonstrated an impact, though not necessarily in ways we might expect. This session will explore conditions and strategies that can make …

Environmental Migrants And The Future Of The Willamette Valley: A Preliminary Exploration, Alison Wicks Jan 2011

Environmental Migrants And The Future Of The Willamette Valley: A Preliminary Exploration, Alison Wicks

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

This report reviews existing data and research on predicted impacts of climate change in the Northwestern United States, and specifically focuses on the level of preparedness to accommodate new population growth due to climate migration in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Climate change impacts in Oregon are predicted to be less severe than in other areas of the country. Generally, models project warmer, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers in the Willamette Valley and other areas west of the Cascade Range. This will likely make the Willamette Valley a more desirable place for environmentally displaced people to locate. This report considers how …

Simulation And Emulation Of Massively Parallel Processor For Solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems Based On Oracles, Gunavant Dinkar Chaudhari Jan 2011

Simulation And Emulation Of Massively Parallel Processor For Solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems Based On Oracles, Gunavant Dinkar Chaudhari

Dissertations and Theses

Most part of my thesis is devoted to efficient automated logic synthesis of oracle processors. These Oracle Processors are of interest to several modern technologies, including Scheduling and Allocation, Image Processing and Robot Vision, Computer Aided Design, Games and Puzzles, and Cellular Automata, but so far the most important practical application is to build logic circuits to solve various practical Constraint Satisfaction Problems in Intelligent Robotics. For instance, robot path planning can be reduced to Satisfiability. In short, an oracle is a circuit that has some proposition of solution on the inputs and answers yes/no to this proposition. In other …

Pedagogical Catalysts Of Civic Competence: The Development Of A Critical Epistemological Model For Community-Based Learning, Stephanie Taylor Stokamer Jan 2011

Pedagogical Catalysts Of Civic Competence: The Development Of A Critical Epistemological Model For Community-Based Learning, Stephanie Taylor Stokamer

Dissertations and Theses

Civic competence is critical to the successful functioning of pluralistic democracies. Developing the knowledge, skills, and motivations for effective democratic participation is a national and global imperative that many higher education institutions have embraced through the teaching strategies of community-based learning and service-learning. Yet, scant research literature has focused on the relationship between pedagogical approaches and civic competence outcomes. This five-year longitudinal study of 11,000 students in 700 senior-level capstone courses at an urban research university empirically tested a new theoretically constructed model of civic competence development in order to identify epistemological and pedagogical elements that enhance civic competence. Eight …

Development Of A Hybrid Atomic Force And Scanning Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect Microscope For Investigation Of Magnetic Domains, Andrew James Lawrence Jan 2011

Development Of A Hybrid Atomic Force And Scanning Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect Microscope For Investigation Of Magnetic Domains, Andrew James Lawrence

Dissertations and Theses

We present the development of a far-field magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope. An inverted optical microscope was constructed to accommodate Kerr imaging and atomic force microscopy. In Kerr microscopy, magnetic structure is investigated by measuring the polarization rotation of light reflected from a sample in the presence of a magnetic field. Atomic force microscopy makes use of a probe which is scanned over a sample surface to map the topography. The design was created virtually in SolidWorks, a three-dimensional computer-aided drafting environment, to ensure compatibility and function of the various components, both commercial and custom-machined, required for the operation of this …

Dissertations and Theses

This study describes how information spread on the internet by examining diffusion, framing and source use surrounding coverage of the 2010 best-selling book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The book presented a rare opportunity to view how a story about science, discovery and race became a best-seller within weeks after its publication. Through a mixed-methods and case study approach, the author examines patterns of coverage using Google Alerts that traced the book's online coverage in the first six months of its release. The author found that online information clustered around several themes with the most prominent describing aspects of …

Toward A Taxonomy Of Diversity At Work: Developing And Validating The Workplace Diversity Inventory, Aisha Smith Taylor Jan 2011

Toward A Taxonomy Of Diversity At Work: Developing And Validating The Workplace Diversity Inventory, Aisha Smith Taylor

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research was to develop a taxonomy of workplace diversity and examine its implications for understanding and predicting diversity at work. A 7-dimension taxonomy was originally developed by reviewing contemporary literature on diversity in the workplace. The taxonomy is grounded in Social Identity Theory. Preliminary research found that each of the seven dimensions of the taxonomy were present in 78 critical incidents describing work-relevant diversity dynamics. The current study reports the development and administration of an instrument, the Workplace Diversity Inventory (WDI), which was used to empirically examine the 7-factor model of the taxonomy in over 20 …

A Study Of Soil Organic Matter And Its Controlling Factors In Portland, Oregon, Megan Dillon Jan 2011

A Study Of Soil Organic Matter And Its Controlling Factors In Portland, Oregon, Megan Dillon

Dissertations and Theses

Traditionally, local above- and below-ground plant and microbial communities, temperature and precipitation, topography and texture and composition of parent material have been thought to govern the soil processes that lead to soil organic matter accumulation over decades or centuries. Soil organic matter is a substantial global reservoir of carbon and disturbance of equilibrated soils often leads to efflux of significant quantities of CO2. Anthropogenic influences shift the inputs, disturb the structure and alter the biochemistry of soil, profoundly disrupting soil-forming processes. Urbanization leads to soil organic matter equilibria that are different from those in naturally forming soils. Measurement of soil …

Low-Latency Estimates For Window-Aggregate Queries Over Data Streams, Amit Bhat Jan 2011

Low-Latency Estimates For Window-Aggregate Queries Over Data Streams, Amit Bhat

Dissertations and Theses

Obtaining low-latency results from window-aggregate queries can be critical to certain data-stream processing applications. Due to a DSMS's lack of control over incoming data (typically, because of delays and bursts in data arrival), timely results for a window-aggregate query over a data stream cannot be obtained with guarantees about the results' accuracy. In this thesis, I propose a technique, which I term prodding, to obtain early result estimates for window-aggregate queries over data streams. The early estimates are obtained in addition to the regular query results. The proposed technique aims to maximize the contribution to a result-estimate computation from all …

Effects Of Evaporative Cooling In The Thermal Performance Of Green Roofs, Giorgina Beatriz Castillo Garcia Jan 2011

Effects Of Evaporative Cooling In The Thermal Performance Of Green Roofs, Giorgina Beatriz Castillo Garcia

Dissertations and Theses

Green roofs have become an important urban mitigation technology due to their ability to address multiple environmental issues. One of the most common benefits attributed to green roofs is the reduction in heating and cooling loads in buildings by dissipating heat through evaporation. This study focuses on evaluating the effect that evaporative cooling has on the thermal performance of green roofs. Sponge and floral foam were used as porous media for their ability to retain water inside its body, transport it to the surface, evaporate it at a constant rate and for their different pore sizes. Test trays containing sponge …

Perceptions And Voices Of South Sudanese About The North-South Sudan Conflict, Machar Wek Aleu-Baak Jan 2011

Perceptions And Voices Of South Sudanese About The North-South Sudan Conflict, Machar Wek Aleu-Baak

Dissertations and Theses

The conflict in Sudan reflects historic hatred and ethnic discrimination between Northern Arab Muslims and Southern African Christians and Animists. The longest and worst conflict began in 1983 and ended in 2005, when African Christians and Animists struggled to form an interim autonomous government. This conflict claimed 2 million lives from both sides and displaced almost 4 million people from the South. This thesis attempts to understand how people from Southern Sudan perceive the root causes and sustaining factors of the Sudanese conflict between Arab Muslims and African Christians. This research looks specifically into the roles of ethnic differences and …

Working In An Artist Collective In Portland Oregon: The Artistic Benefits Of Cooperation And Place In An Underground Art World, Elizabeth Furlong Borders

Dissertations and Theses

This ethnography explores the underground art world in Portland, Oregon by showing how a Portland area artist collective, Oregon Painting Society, navigates their art world. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, and a short latent content analysis triangulate data to show the features and values of the underground art world. Using Becker's concept of art worlds, I show how artists working outside of a traditional art career in a commercial gallery system do their work by exploring how Portland's art world is structured and sustained. I find that group work, cooperation, and resource sharing in a vibrant neighborhood based social network enables …

The Moving To The Beat Documentary And Hip-Hop Based Curriculum Guide: Youth Reactions And Resistance, Jennifer Wallin-Ruschman Jan 2011

The Moving To The Beat Documentary And Hip-Hop Based Curriculum Guide: Youth Reactions And Resistance, Jennifer Wallin-Ruschman

Dissertations and Theses

Many of the academic and popular treatments of hip-hop overlook the complexity of the phenomenon. Hip-hop is often portrayed solely as a source of corruption and regressive tendencies or, alternatively, as a sort of savior for otherwise marginalized individuals and source of revolutionary power. This thesis situates hip-hop between these poles and draws out its progressive and regressive aspects for analysis. Considering its vast global influence and a growing body of academic literature, hip-hop has been notably understudied in the field of psychology. Alternatively, educational theorists and practitioners have realized the power of hip-hop in revisualizing an emancipatory education that …

Logic Realization Using Regular Structures In Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (Qca), Rahul Singhal Jan 2011

Logic Realization Using Regular Structures In Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (Qca), Rahul Singhal

Dissertations and Theses

Semiconductor industry seems to approach a wall where physical geometry and power density issues could possibly render the device fabrication infeasible. Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is a new nanotechnology that claims to offer the potential of manufacturing even denser integrated circuits, which can operate at high frequencies and low power consumption. In QCA technology, the signal propagation occurs as a result of electrostatic interaction among the electrons as opposed to flow to the electrons in a wire. The basic building block of QCA technology is a QCA cell which encodes binary information with the relative position of electrons in it. …

Family-Supportive Supervisory Behaviors As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Job Strain And Workers' Blood Pressure, Christopher Scott Harper Jan 2011

Family-Supportive Supervisory Behaviors As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Job Strain And Workers' Blood Pressure, Christopher Scott Harper

Dissertations and Theses

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in industrialized nations. Research indicates that job strain may be significantly related to cardiovascular disease in employees with little to no social support. Using the JDC-S model developed by Karasek (1979) and elaborated upon by Johnson and Hall (1988), the family-supportive supervisory behaviors (FSSB) measure created by Hammer et al., (2009), and the blood pressure wrist monitor device Omron317T, this study examined FSSB as a moderator of the relationship between job strain, job demands, job control and workers' blood pressure on work and non-work days. Sixty-nine grocery store workers from …

Toward A Richer Shade Of Blue: The Impact On Oregon Police Officer Perceptions Of Racial Minorities After Anti-Racial Profiling Training, David Andrew Kline

Dissertations and Theses

Four fatal shootings, during police interactions, of unarmed people-of-color occurred in the Portland, Oregon Metro Area from 2003 to 2010 calling into question from members of the community whether or not the officers involved and hence their representative police departments had been racially profiling. Of interest in this study is whether or not cutting edge anti-racial profiling police officer trainings have an impact on how officers in Oregon perceive members of racial minority groups. A review of literature found that previous inquiries into racial prejudice among police officers may be present and that previous efforts to address racial ethics in …

Poverty And Conflict: A Self-Perpetuating Cycle In The Somali Regional State (Region 5), Ethiopia: 1960-2010, Bisrat Teshome Jan 2011

Poverty And Conflict: A Self-Perpetuating Cycle In The Somali Regional State (Region 5), Ethiopia: 1960-2010, Bisrat Teshome

Dissertations and Theses

Region 5 is one of the most impoverished and insecure regions of Ethiopia. For decades, the region has suffered from a multitude of armed conflicts involving state and non-state actors. Region 5 is also one of the most underserved states of Ethiopia with some of the lowest levels of human development indicators nationwide. Although the adversities of poverty and conflict are widely acknowledged in their own respect, there has been little or no inquest into why poverty and conflict have prevailed under the same space for decades. Poverty and conflict have often been seen as separate phenomena that are dealt …

Race, Ethnicity And Attitudes Toward Same-Sex Unions In The United States, Claudia Plesa Jan 2011

Race, Ethnicity And Attitudes Toward Same-Sex Unions In The United States, Claudia Plesa

Dissertations and Theses

Recent political and cultural trends have led to an evaluation of the meaning of marriage within American society, and especially marriage as it concerns couples of the same sex. However, little research has been done to find out how attitudes toward same-sex marriage might vary according to race and ethnicity. Drawing on data from the 2004 National Politics Study, the author investigates same-sex marriage attitudes and tests hypotheses concerning the attitudes of various American race-ethnic groups. This study employs multinomial logistic regression analysis to compare attitudes of African Americans, Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites. Results indicate that even when socio demographic …

Assessment Of An Optimal Bus Stop Spacing Model Using High Resolution Archived Stop-Level Data, Huan Li Jan 2011

Assessment Of An Optimal Bus Stop Spacing Model Using High Resolution Archived Stop-Level Data, Huan Li

Dissertations and Theses

In practice, the design of bus routes and stop placement involves calculated trade-offs between service frequency, quality, and access. Increased stop density improves access but contributes to slow operating speeds and increased operating costs. In this thesis, a optimized bus stop spacing model is applied using the high resolution archived stop-level bus performance data from the Bus Dispatch System (BDS) provided by TriMet, the regional transit provider for the Portland metropolitan area. Two cost components are considered in the stop spacing model including passenger access cost and in-vehicle passenger stopping cost, and are combined and optimized to minimize total cost. …

Storytelling As Loving Praxis In Critical Peace Education: A Grounded Theory Study Of Postsecondary Social Justice Educators, Amanda Smith Byron Jan 2011

Storytelling As Loving Praxis In Critical Peace Education: A Grounded Theory Study Of Postsecondary Social Justice Educators, Amanda Smith Byron

Dissertations and Theses

Looking through the philosophical lens of love, this study seeks a deeper understanding and appreciation of how postsecondary social justice educators use storytelling, in the context of critical peace education, to create social change. This research explores the guiding question of how storytelling is used to encourage social change and to inspire action toward the goal of greater social justice. The argument for the importance of this research is located within the crisis of neoliberalism, where the very tenets of democratic education are being challenged by an educational agenda that favors standards-based learning and employment training over the critical and …

Microbial Ecology Of Active Marine Hydrothermal Vent Deposits: The Influence Of Geologic Setting On Microbial Communities, Gilberto Eugene Flores Jan 2011

Microbial Ecology Of Active Marine Hydrothermal Vent Deposits: The Influence Of Geologic Setting On Microbial Communities, Gilberto Eugene Flores

Dissertations and Theses

The discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents in 1977 revealed an ecosystem supported by chemosynthesis with a rich diversity of invertebrates, Archaea and Bacteria. While the invertebrate vent communities are largely composed of endemic species and exist in different biogeographical provinces, the possible factors influencing the distribution patterns of free-living Archaea and Bacteria are still being explored. In particular, how differences in the geologic setting of vent fields influence microbial communities and populations associated with active vent deposits remains largely unknown. The overall goal of the studies presented in this dissertation was to examine the links between the geologic setting of …

Bus Replacement Modeling And The Impacts Of Budget Constraints, Fleet Cost Variability, And Market Changes On Fleet Costs And Optimal Bus Replacement Age, A Case Study, Jesse Alexander Boudart Jan 2011

Bus Replacement Modeling And The Impacts Of Budget Constraints, Fleet Cost Variability, And Market Changes On Fleet Costs And Optimal Bus Replacement Age, A Case Study, Jesse Alexander Boudart

Dissertations and Theses

Overwhelming evidence throughout the literature has shown that bus overhead and maintenance (O&M) costs increase as buses age. This has implications toward a fleet manager's decision of when one should buy, use, or sell buses to minimize total fleet costs. Unfortunately, there are uncertain market conditions associated with bus fleets that cloud the manager's ability to make appropriate decisions. Using integer programming (IP), O&M trends and changing market conditions are integrated into a model to better analyze bus fleets. Due to recent budget constraints of transit agencies, needs for a bus fleet replacement model have arisen. King County in Washington …
