Smoking Topography And Smoking-Related Outcome Expectancies In Smokers With Schizotypy, Diana Williams Stewart Jan 2011

Smoking Topography And Smoking-Related Outcome Expectancies In Smokers With Schizotypy, Diana Williams Stewart

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Individuals with schizophrenia have extremely high smoking rates (70-88%). Compared to smokers in the general population, smokers with schizophrenia have more intense smoking patterns (e.g., more cigarettes per day; smoke stronger cigarettes; higher nicotine dependence, carbon monoxide (CO) boosts, cotinine, and nicotine levels; more extreme smoking topography) and more positive smoking outcome expectancies. However, the relationship between smoking and symptomatology is quite complex. Insight might be gleaned by studying the relationship between smoking and schizotypy, or the putative genetic vulnerability to developing schizophrenia, as it avoids many confounds associated with schizophrenia. This study investigated schizotypy symptoms, smoking characteristics and behaviors, …

(Be)Coming Home: The Complexity Of Home As Revealed In Young Adult Novels Of Disaster, Charity Elise Cantey Jan 2011

(Be)Coming Home: The Complexity Of Home As Revealed In Young Adult Novels Of Disaster, Charity Elise Cantey

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Inspired by the researcher’s work with five displaced New Orleans teenagers in the months after Hurricane Katrina, this research examined twelve young adult novels in which characters face a loss of or damage to home in the wake of a natural or humanly-caused disaster. The study sought ways in which home is represented in young adult literature of disaster by analyzing passages in which characters discuss, remember, imagine, and rebuild or reestablish home after its damage or loss. A phenomenological approach was used to examine these fictional experiences of home in order to discern their contribution to an understanding of …

The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity, Disordered Eating And Body Image Among Chinese And Caucasian Students, Lauren E. Baillie Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity, Disordered Eating And Body Image Among Chinese And Caucasian Students, Lauren E. Baillie

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It is generally believed that Western culture’s emphasis on thinness is responsible for the presence of eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction. However, Asians living in Western societies who are more acculturated to Western values have shown fewer body image and eating problems than their less acculturated Asian peers, while those who are highly acculturated to their native culture may be at increased risk for eating disorder symptoms. In this study, Chinese and Caucasian students attending United States universities completed measures of body image, body esteem, disordered eating and ethnic identity in the language of their choice (English or Simplified …

Regarding Westernization In Central Africa: Hybridity In The Works Of Three Chadian Playwrights, Enoch Reounodji Jan 2011

Regarding Westernization In Central Africa: Hybridity In The Works Of Three Chadian Playwrights, Enoch Reounodji

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The second half of the nineteenth century played a determining role in the political, economic, social, and cultural spheres of Africa. The Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 witnessed European interests bargaining over the territories of Africa and arbitrarily dividing much of the continent into different countries under European control. This historical moment may be regarded as the height of Western influence over Africa, though it only continued the colonial tradition of viewing Africa as a land without culture, theatre, literature, or history (prior to the advent of the white man). The legacy of this outlook has placed African intellectuals and literary …

A Comparative Study Of And Performer's Guide To Selected Songs By The Swiss Composer Othmar Schoeck, Travis Archie Richter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This written document compares three songs settings of Othmar Schoeck to three other settings, written to the same text, by Hugo Wolf, Alban Berg, and Franz Schubert. The three pairings discussed are as follows: Schoeck’s Er ist’s (1937) as compared to Hugo Wolf’s setting, 1888; Ergebung (1918) as compared to Alban Berg’s setting Es wandelt, was wir schauen, 1908 (both settings were set to the same text); Rastlose Liebe (1909-1914) as compared to Franz Schubert’s setting, D. 138 (1815). Each comparison discusses how the respective composers treated text, dynamics, melody, harmony, and various other musical elements. The comparisons will show …

Comorbid Psychopathology In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders - Cut-Off Scores For The Autism Specturm Disorders-Comorbidity For Children (Asd-Cc), Ryan Thomas Thorson Jan 2011

Comorbid Psychopathology In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders - Cut-Off Scores For The Autism Specturm Disorders-Comorbidity For Children (Asd-Cc), Ryan Thomas Thorson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Once considered rare, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are increasingly becoming viewed as common disorders. Prevalence rates of ASD have increased drastically in recent years. Recent studies suggest comorbid psychopathology within ASD to be more common than previously thought. Though these deficits exist, specific instruments to diagnose psychopathology in this population do not yet exist. This highlights the underlying need for instruments to identify psychopathology in individuals with ASD. The aim of this study was to establish cut-off scores for the Autism Spectrum Disorder – Comorbidity for Children, an instrument designed to assess for comorbid psychopathology within individuals with ASD.

These will not be just passive systems such as cell phones, but active assistive systems like robot aides in use in hospitals, homes, entertainment room, office, and other work environments. Such systems will need to be able to properly deduce human emotional state before they determine how to best interact with …

Latinos, Immigration Policy, And Geographic Diversification: Examining The Effects Of Concentrated Poverty, Segregation, And Low-Skill Employment On Homicide, Raymond Barranco Jan 2011

Latinos, Immigration Policy, And Geographic Diversification: Examining The Effects Of Concentrated Poverty, Segregation, And Low-Skill Employment On Homicide, Raymond Barranco

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study consists of three separate, yet interrelated analyses - all three examine the effects of Latino immigration. Since the mid-1980s, the pattern of settlement by Latino migrants has changed dramatically. These migrants are now settling in parts of the United States that have never before had significant Latino populations. This has led many to fear an increase in crime. Unfortunately, early explanations of immigration and crime focused on the experience of Eastern European immigrants. Therefore, it has not been clear whether the experience of Latino immigrants could be explained in the same way – especially with some researchers finding …

Chinese Influence On Western Women's Dress In American Vogue Magazine, 1960-2009, Yao Zeng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Chinese culture has dramatically influenced Western women’s fashionable dress over many centuries. Researchers have studied Chinese dress and its influence on Western women’s dress in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth century. However, no research has systematically examined Chinese dress influences on Western women’s dress from the time that China reopened its door to the West in the 1970s and into the twenty-first century. The purpose of this study is to trace Chinese influence in Western women’s dress from 1960 to 2009 in American Vogue magazine. The specific aims of this study are to identify and record the influence of …

Prevention Of Constipation In The Older Adult Population, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario Jan 2011

Prevention Of Constipation In The Older Adult Population, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario

General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials

The purpose of this guideline is to reduce the frequency and severity of constipation among older adults through the use of adequate hydration and dietary fibre, regular consistent toileting and physical activity. Achieving and maintaining a pattern of normal bowel elimination will prevent constipation, decrease the use of laxatives, and improve the quality of life for older adults. There is no agreed upon definition of constipation in the clinical and research communities (Koch, Voderholzer, Klauser & MullerLissner,1997). Some authors maintain that defining constipation on the basis of symptoms is misguided (Probert, Emmett & Heaton, 1995).

Assessing Common Variance In Psychopathy Measures, Rochelle Taormina Jan 2011

Assessing Common Variance In Psychopathy Measures, Rochelle Taormina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Youth who demonstrate callous and unemotional traits along with aggressive antisocial behaviors are more likely than youth who do not display callous and unemotional traits to continue those acts into adulthood. Similarly there is support in the literature that the psychopathy construct measured in adulthood are evidenced in youth. For example, psychopathy traits measured by the Psychopathy Check List-Revised (PCL-R), noted as the gold standard assessment measure of psychopathy in adults, has been slightly modified for use with youth (i.e., Psychopathy Checklist - Youth Version [PCL-Y V]). The PCL-YV has been identified as a useful predictor of aggressive behaviors among …

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of An Instrument To Assess The Treatment Fidelity Of A Brief Opportunistic Intervention To Reduce Substance Use Among Pregnant Women, Antonia Torrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) among pregnant women is a leading national objective, prenatal use has not decreased. Evidence-based interventions that can be replicated in practice are critically needed and brief interventions have shown promise in reducing prenatal ATOD use. The "I Am Concerned" (IAC) brief opportunistic intervention is currently being implemented by frontline primary prenatal care staff members in several areas of the United States. Evaluation of treatment fidelity, to determine if behavioral interventions are delivered as intended, is essential to controlled research. This study constituted the first step in the development and psychometric evaluation …

"The Colossal Vitality Of His Illusion": The Myth Of The American Dream In The Modern American Novel, James E. Ayers Jan 2011

"The Colossal Vitality Of His Illusion": The Myth Of The American Dream In The Modern American Novel, James E. Ayers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the American dream is a large-scale cultural myth, and that through an analysis of the dream’s mythic structure we can locate a paradigm according to which both American literature and American culture are organized. The American dream has maintained unique relevance across the historical, regional, and cultural diversity of the American nation, in part because it always remains abstract and resists firm definition. Nevertheless, by breaking the broad myth into its most basic elemental parts we can begin to see patterns across the many distinctive versions of the American dream, such that we can identify the …

Relationships Among Early Literacy Curriculum Based Measurement And Reading State Criterion Tests Over Time, Lynn Utchell Jan 2011

Relationships Among Early Literacy Curriculum Based Measurement And Reading State Criterion Tests Over Time, Lynn Utchell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite significant regulations regarding the reading proficiency of students in the United States, more than half of students graduating high school are continually reading below proficiency (National Center for Education Statistics, 2010). In 2000 the National Reading Panel (NRP) identified phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension as the five main areas of reading development. As a result of the NRP's findings and the low rates of literacy, No Child Left Behind (2002) mandated that all students are proficient readers by 2014 and that proficiency is measured on a yearly basis by state mandated high-stakes assessments, beginning in Grade 3. …

Synthesis, Biological And Photophysical Studies Of Novel Compounds For Cancer Therapy, Edith Khavwajira Amuhaya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the United States. It is therefore imperative that a lot of effort be put into finding a cure for this dreadful disease that shows no discrimination, and virtually anybody is at risk of developing the disease. Chapter 1 introduces basic facts about cancer and the available treatments, including PDT and BNCT. Our focus will be on these two bimodal therapies, which form the basis of my research work, which involves the synthesis of potential sensitizers to be used either in PDT or BNCT or both. In Chapter 2, I discuss …

Musical Allusion To The Rite Of Spring In Four Contemporary Works For Solo Bassoon, Scott Miller Jan 2011

Musical Allusion To The Rite Of Spring In Four Contemporary Works For Solo Bassoon, Scott Miller

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The bassoon solo that begins The Rite of Spring has had a profound and lasting influence on the treatment of the bassoon as a melodic instrument, both in the context of the orchestra and as a solo instrument. It has been alluded to and directly quoted in many works over the past century, and has become associated with the modern concept of the bassoon as a solo instrument. Four works for solo bassoon by contemporary composers—Canto XII by Samuel Adler, Metamorphoses by Leslie Bassett, Paisagem sonora no. 5 by Rodrigo Lima, and From Rite to Rite by Claudia and Maíra …

Neuroendocrine Mechanisms Mediating Pheromonal Modulation Of Behavior In Terrestrial Salamanders, Corina Wack Jan 2011

Neuroendocrine Mechanisms Mediating Pheromonal Modulation Of Behavior In Terrestrial Salamanders, Corina Wack

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pheromones are chemosensory cues released by an individual to cause a behavioral or physiological change in a conspecific. These changes can range from increasing a female's receptivity to altering hormone secretions in the body. The red-legged salamander (Plethodon shermani) is an emerging non-mammalian model for understanding the evolution of chemical communication due to their well-characterized pheromones. Plethodontid salamanders secrete pheromones from their submandibular gland, called mental gland pheromones. Previous studies showed that mental gland pheromones increased receptivity in females during courtship and also increased corticosterone (CORT) concentrations in males. CORT is a metabolic hormone that mediates vertebrate stress responses. To …

Novel Sample Preparation And Tof-Ms Analysis Of Environmental And Toxicological Analytes Using Epa Method 6800, Rebecca Wagner Jan 2011

Novel Sample Preparation And Tof-Ms Analysis Of Environmental And Toxicological Analytes Using Epa Method 6800, Rebecca Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quantitative analysis of environmental and toxicological samples must be reliable, rapid, and in some cases field portable. In the United States, the employment of chemical weapons by rogue states and/or terrorist organizations is an ongoing concern. Nerve agent degradative products (methylphosphonic acid) as well as surrogates (glyphosate) must be detected at low quantities in various water matrices. Current methods involve tedious and time-consuming derivatizations for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography in tandem with mass spectrometry. Two solid phase extraction (SPE) techniques for the analysis of glyphosate and methylphosphonic acid are described with the utilization of isotopically enriched analytes …

Examining The Association Between Peer Rejection, Loneliness, And Depressive Symptoms In Children And Adolescents, Beth Whipple

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although positive peer relations play a significant role in children's development, not all children are accepted by peers. Peer rejection can have a tremendous impact on children's lives and future adjustment. This study took a closer look at the experience of loneliness in children and adolescents. The stability of loneliness as well as the presence of depressive symptoms was explored. The study also examined if rejected children vary in their experience of loneliness and depression. Results indicate that withdrawn rejected children reported a higher degree of loneliness than aggressive rejected children over time. Analyses also provided evidence of the connection …

Living With Schizophrenia: A Phenomenological Investigation, Andri Yennari Jan 2011

Living With Schizophrenia: A Phenomenological Investigation, Andri Yennari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the experience of living with schizophrenia through seven participants' accounts of the way they have been perceived and treated by others, as well as the way they viewed themselves after having been identified with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. Participants were recruited through psychologists at the mental health facility where they received treatment and were interviewed by the researcher in that facility.

To analyze the data of this study, an empirical phenomenological method was used to explicate the meaning of schizophrenia as it was experienced and lived by participants. A hermeneutic component was included to interpret the data …
