Beyond Lean: Simulation In Practice, Charles R. Standridge Ph.D. Dec 2011

Beyond Lean: Simulation In Practice, Charles R. Standridge Ph.D.

Open Textbooks

Lean thinking, as well as associated processes and tools, have involved into a ubiquitous perspective for improving systems particularly in the manufacturing arena. With application experience has come an understanding of the boundaries of lean capabilities and the benefits of getting beyond these boundaries to further improve performance. Discrete event simulation is recognized as one beyond-the-boundaries of lean technique. Thus, the fundamental goal of this text is to show how discrete event simulation can be used in addition to lean thinking to achieve greater benefits in system improvement than with lean alone. Realizing this goal requires learning the problems that …

Vortex Tilting And The Enhancement Of Spanwise Flow In Flapping Wing Flight, Spencer Frank Dec 2011

Vortex Tilting And The Enhancement Of Spanwise Flow In Flapping Wing Flight, Spencer Frank

HIM 1990-2015

In summary the tilting mechanism helps to explain the overall flow structure and the stability of the leading edge vortex.; The leading edge vortex has been identified as the most critical flow structure for producing lift in flapping wing flight. Its stability depends on the transport of the entrained vorticity into the wake via spanwise flow. This study proposes a hypothesis for the generation and enhancement of spanwise flow based on the chordwise vorticity that results from the tilting of the leading edge vortex and trailing edge vortex. We investigate this phenomenon using dynamically scaled robotic model wings. Two different …

Investigation On Interactions Of Unsteady Wakes And Film Cooling On An Annular Endwall, Matthew J. Golsen Dec 2011

Investigation On Interactions Of Unsteady Wakes And Film Cooling On An Annular Endwall, Matthew J. Golsen

HIM 1990-2015

In recent decades, greater interest in the effect of rotational wakes on gas turbine film cooling applications has produced increasing numbers of studies on these unsteady phenomena. Wakes are primarily shed from upstream components such as transition duct walls, stator vanes, and rotors. Studies have shown that in areas of unsteady flow, the best performing parameters in conventional steady investigations may not be the best for unsteady applications. One common method of modeling the unsteady wake interaction in subsonic flows is the use of spoke wheel type wake generators using cylindrical rods to produce the velocity detriment and local increase …

Context-Driven Agents In Computer Supported Cooperative Works, Brian D. Lichtman Dec 2011

Context-Driven Agents In Computer Supported Cooperative Works, Brian D. Lichtman

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis describes a research project that investigates the level of contextualization needed to successfully build context-driven agents that can manage a cooperative project. Many times in industry, collaborators in a large project may be located vast distances from each other. It is for this reason that management of such projects can often be difficult. The purpose of this research is to design an agent that can take on the role of a project manager (PM) to assist the human project manager. Specifically, this thesis looks to give such project management agents full situational awareness. It is hypothesized that only …

Small-Scale Hybrid Alternative Energy Maximizer For Wind Turbines And Photovoltaic Panels, Ross Kerley Dec 2011

Small-Scale Hybrid Alternative Energy Maximizer For Wind Turbines And Photovoltaic Panels, Ross Kerley

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis describes the creation of a small-scale Hybrid Power System (HPS) that maximizes energy from a wind turbine and photovoltaic array. Small-scale HPS are becoming an increasingly viable energy solution as fossil fuel prices rise and more electricity is needed in remote areas. Modern HPS typically employ wind speed sensors and three power stages to extract maximum power. Modern systems also use passive rectifiers to convert AC from the wind turbine to DC that is usable by power electronics. This passive system inefficiently wastes power and introduces damaging harmonic noise to the wind turbine. The HPS described in this …

The Role Of Judges In The Development Of Mixed Legal Systems: The Case Of Malta, Biagio Andò Dec 2011

The Role Of Judges In The Development Of Mixed Legal Systems: The Case Of Malta, Biagio Andò

Journal of Civil Law Studies

Mixed jurisdictions that are a historical by-product of the convergence of common and civil law traditions may give the impression of entities with stable and fixed traits. Upon a closer look however, this impression is found to be inaccurate. An analysis of court judgements is the best way to evaluate how these legal systems develop. This paper focuses on Maltese private law, which is firmly rooted in the French legal tradition. Some issues concerning private law will be discussed solely because they are significant examples of the relevance that judgements have for the development of the system, notwithstanding the fact …

Rethinking Maltese Legal Hybridity: A Chimeric Illusion Or A Healthy Grafted European Law Mixture?, Kevin Aquilina Dec 2011

Rethinking Maltese Legal Hybridity: A Chimeric Illusion Or A Healthy Grafted European Law Mixture?, Kevin Aquilina

Journal of Civil Law Studies

Although Maltese Law is traditionally classified as a mixed system of Civil Law and Common Law, this paper suggests that it is more appropriate to do away with this designation, which is not entirely exact, and instead call it what it really is, namely, a ‘European’ legal system.

The paper proposes a typology of the Maltese legal system divided into nine distinct phases which contain traces of Civil Law, Common Law, Customary Law, Canon Law, Maltese Autochthonous Law, European Union Law, Regional Law (Mediterranean Law and, in its widest sense, European Law), Public International Law and elements of foreign national …

From Capitulations To Unequal Treaties: The Matter Of An Extraterritorial Jurisdiction In The Ottoman Empire, Eliana Augusti Dec 2011

From Capitulations To Unequal Treaties: The Matter Of An Extraterritorial Jurisdiction In The Ottoman Empire, Eliana Augusti

Journal of Civil Law Studies

In the nineteenth century, justice in the Ottoman Empire appeared to international jurists deeply corrupted and far from the Western model. European consular jurisdictions, as in the past, solved this embarrassment in the prevalent and private interest of Western States in order to control the Mediterranean area. This perpetrated abjuration to recognize an autonomous and sovereign Ottoman administration of justice in civil or criminal cases in which foreigners were involved continued, in spite of the fact that the Porte provided excellent examples of intersection, reception and appropriation of foreign models to construct a new legal system, and to transform society. …

Article 1045 Of The Maltese Civil Code: Is Compensation For Moral Damage Compatible Therewith?, Claude Micallef-Grimaud Dec 2011

Article 1045 Of The Maltese Civil Code: Is Compensation For Moral Damage Compatible Therewith?, Claude Micallef-Grimaud

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The paper focuses on Article 1045 of the Maltese Civil Code regulating liquidation of compensation (damages) under Maltese tort law and examines whether or not compensation for moral damage is compatible therewith. French law and Austrian law (being the main sources of Article 1045) are analysed and contrasted with the peculiarities of Maltese tort law whilst the motivations of the original legislator (Sir Adriano Dingli) are also critically discussed. The paper subsequently examines the dichotomy between responsibility in tort and damages under Maltese tort law and concludes by analysing some selected case law.

A Jurilinguistic Study Of The Trilingual Civil Code Of Québec, Jimena Andino Dorato Dec 2011

A Jurilinguistic Study Of The Trilingual Civil Code Of Québec, Jimena Andino Dorato

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The author seeks, with this article, to introduce jurilinguistics as a growing discipline that could contribute a new and …

Context-Based Friend Suggestion In Online Photo-Sharing Community, Ting Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tao Mei Dec 2011

Context-Based Friend Suggestion In Online Photo-Sharing Community, Ting Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tao Mei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the popularity of social media, web users tend to spend more time than before for sharing their experience and interest in online photo-sharing sites. The wide variety of sharing behaviors generate different metadata which pose new opportunities for the discovery of communities. We propose a new approach, named context-based friend suggestion, to leverage the diverse form of contextual cues for more effective friend suggestion in the social media community. Different from existing approaches, we consider both visual and geographical cues, and develop two user-based similarity measurements, i.e., visual similarity and geo similarity for characterizing user relationship. The problem of …

Ancient Chinese Power, Modern Chinese Thought, Linsay Cunningham-Cross, William A. Callahan Dec 2011

Ancient Chinese Power, Modern Chinese Thought, Linsay Cunningham-Cross, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Ancient Chinese Thought, Modern Chinese Power is the latest publication to come from Yan Xuetong's ongoing research project that explores the interstate political philosophy of China's pre-Qin era. This book is interesting on many levels, and has already drawn attention from public intellectuals and scholars in the West. This essay thus first will examine the scholarly issue of how Yan and his colleagues are employing pre-Qin thought to make philosophical and political arguments about how China will rise. It will consider the relation of the ‘kingly way’ (wang 王) and the ‘hegemonic way’ (ba 霸) to critically analyze Yan's argument …
