Keeping It Real: Teaching And Learning In The Harry Potter Series, Mary E. N. Vaughn Dec 2011

Keeping It Real: Teaching And Learning In The Harry Potter Series, Mary E. N. Vaughn

Honors Theses

Scholars have noted that embedded in the plot of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series are representations of teaching and learning in and outside of the classroom. In fact, much study has been dedicated to analyzing pedagogical techniques present in the series, some of which studies I will be discussing below. The novels also reflect real problems and issues in the classroom. How people react to the educational process depicted in the text grows out of popularized conceptions or misconceptions of real-world education. Considering that Rowling was an educator before becoming established as a writer, she probably has some ideas …

A Critical Edition Of Madison Cawein: Examining The Effects Of Modernism On Regional Poetry, Kristin Teston Dec 2011

A Critical Edition Of Madison Cawein: Examining The Effects Of Modernism On Regional Poetry, Kristin Teston

Honors Theses

When I first began this project, I had hopes of discovering that long forgotten poet, Madison Cawein, was one of America’s early Modernist writers. However, as time progressed and as I became intimate with Cawein’s work I realized that he was, in fact, not a Modernist. Rather, Cawein’s writing reveals interesting insight on how poets steeped in traditional form were affected by the shift to the Modernist ways thinking and writing. Although, as this project will later reveal, Cawein was much opposed to the free verse style of Modernist writing his concerns about the ever changing modern world closely relate …

When The State Demands Disclosure, Rebecca Aviel Dec 2011

When The State Demands Disclosure, Rebecca Aviel

Cardozo Law Review

The obligation to provide certain types of information to government authorities - reporting child abuse, say, or insurance fraud - is proliferating. Are these laws enforceable against lawyers who obtain the sought-after information in the course of representing a client? This Article sets out to answer exactly that question. It begins by explaining why it is wrong to approach the question by balancing the policies that underlie attorney-client confidentiality against those underlying reporting statutes. Such an approach fails to grasp the essential nature of the question, which is one of legislative power and legislative intent. This Article is the first …

Exploring First Generation African American Graduate Students: Motivating Factors For Pursuing A Doctoral Degree, Stephanie G. Adams Dec 2011

Exploring First Generation African American Graduate Students: Motivating Factors For Pursuing A Doctoral Degree, Stephanie G. Adams

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose for conducting the study was to examine the factors that motivate African-American first-generation students to pursue doctoral education at a four-year public university. There has been little research on the influence academic or non-academic factors have on first-generation graduate student motivation. Similarly, little research exists that explored how factors might vary by ethnicity. Based on the projected increase of post-baccalaureate enrollment each year (Aud, Hussar, Planty, Snyder, Bianco, Fox, Frohlich, Kemp, Drake, 2010), first-generation African-Americans will become more interested in attending graduate school. It is important to gain a better understanding of the factors and influences that impact …

Returning The Ticket: Rejecting God In Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov And Hardy's Jude The Obscure, Molly Throgmorton

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fyodor Dostoevsky and Thomas Hardy both explored the intricacies of the burgeoning spiritual crisis of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in their works. The two most prominent of these works, Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and Hardy's Jude the Obscure, show the stories of two characters, Ivan and Jude respectively, that choose to reject God. This thesis explores the connection between these two characters, specifically as they represent the two authors' outsider characters. It looks at the reasons behind their rejection, the ways that their rejection plays out in their lives, and the novels' alternatives, namely Christianity and selfless …

The Thundering Throne: Personality, Poetics, And Gender In The Court Of King Henry Viii, Rebecca Marie Moore Dec 2011

The Thundering Throne: Personality, Poetics, And Gender In The Court Of King Henry Viii, Rebecca Marie Moore

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work examines gender in the court of King Henry VIII, focusing specifically on the role that the power and weight of Henry's personal decisions played in shaping the contemporary Social definitions of femininity, masculinity, and courtiership. The space of courtiership is particularly open to such inquiry because this space was so often one that revealed the fissures and failures in attempts to maintain the strict binaries that privileged hegemonic masculinity under Henry. These definitions, then, will be reflected in, as well as shaped by, court poetry and, as explored in the final chapter, prose. Literature produced within the context …

Our lives are filled with routine activities that we do more or less on auto-pilot such as driving to work and cooking. This thesis explores a workflow representation as a way to represent such activities of daily living. The domain of a retail store environment is used. Workflows are initially expressed in a structured English representation, then translated into a Petri net notation and implemented in mix of Petri nets, Lua, and C so that the resulting workflows can be displayed as the actions of collections of avatarbots (avatars controlled by programs) in a 3D virtual world, Second Life. One …

Preserving Euskera In A Globalized World: Determining The Long-Term Efficacy Of Multilingual Schools In The Basque Country, Spain (Thesis), Olivia Destrades Mendoza Dec 2011

Preserving Euskera In A Globalized World: Determining The Long-Term Efficacy Of Multilingual Schools In The Basque Country, Spain (Thesis), Olivia Destrades Mendoza

Honorable Mentions

The Basque Country, Spain is a linguistically unique region where the minority indigenous language, Euskera, competes alongside the dominant state language, Castilian, and a lingua franca, English, for prestige and status. Following a history of cultural and linguistic repression and marginalization, the Basque community has, in the past 30 years, begun to reintroduce Euskera into new, multilingual school systems in order to teach, preserve and maintain their heritage language, while simultaneously acquiring English as an important language for global communication. This multimethod, qualitative study takes data from 36 survey respondents and five interview participants from the Basque Country, and triangulates …

Property's Memories, Eduardo M. Peñalver Dec 2011

Property's Memories, Eduardo M. Peñalver

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This short essay, presented at Fordham's conference on the social functions of property (and in an earlier form at a conference on law and memory at USC), explores the relationship between property and memory. It distinguishes between property as the object of memory ("memory of property") and property as a medium of memory ("memory in property"). With respect to both kinds of memory, the common law expresses a great deal of ambivalence towards memory. Unlimited memory is no less dangerous to a system of property than it is to an individual’s ability to think. Recent reforms of adverse possession, the …

Using A Micro-Integrator To Eliminate The Numerical Butterfly Effect In Non-Linear Chaotic Partial Differential Equations, Joshua Jemegbe Dec 2011

Using A Micro-Integrator To Eliminate The Numerical Butterfly Effect In Non-Linear Chaotic Partial Differential Equations, Joshua Jemegbe

Electrical Engineering Theses

Chaos theory is a relatively new scientific paradigm for the analysis, simulation and prediction of non-linear phenomena whose initial conditions determine the behavior of their entire time series representation. It finds many applications in mathematics, science, and engineering. These include, but are not limited, to data encryption and decryption, designing secure communication systems, predicting weather patterns, noise fluctuations on data lines, understanding turbulence in fluid flow, and analyzing quantum wells. Systems that exhibit chaos are called chaotic systems. In computing solutions to nonlinear chaotic partial differential equation sets, slight deviations in step size could lead to completely diverging trajectories as …

Compressive Sensing For Speech Signals In Mobile Systems, Sabir Ahmed Dec 2011

Compressive Sensing For Speech Signals In Mobile Systems, Sabir Ahmed

Electrical Engineering Theses

Compressive sensing is an emerging and revolutionary technology that strongly relies on the sparsity of the signal. In compressive sensing the signal is sparsely compressively sampled by taking a small number of random projections of the signal, which contain most of the salient information. Compressive sensing has been previously applied in areas like: image processing, radar systems and sonar systems. This research work will discuss the potential implementation of compressive sensing in mobile communication systems and how it will influence their data rates. In a typical mobile communication system, the signal of interest is sampled at least at the Nyquist …

Practical, Scalable Algorithms For Byzantine Agreement, Olumuyiwa Oluwasanmi Dec 2011

Practical, Scalable Algorithms For Byzantine Agreement, Olumuyiwa Oluwasanmi

Computer Science ETDs

With the growth of the Internet, there has been a push toward designing reliable algorithms that scale effectively in terms of latency, bandwidth and other computational resources. Scalability has been a serious problem especially with peer-to-peer (p2p) networks which may have sizes of more than a million nodes. An important problem in designing reliable algorithms is Byzantine agreement. For reasons of scalability, message complexity is a critical resource for this problem. Unfortunately, previous solutions to Byzantine agreement require each processor to send $O(n)$ messages, where $n$ is the total number of processors in the network. In this dissertation, we show …

Keeping Checkpoint/Restart Viable For Exascale Systems, Kurt Ferreira Dec 2011

Keeping Checkpoint/Restart Viable For Exascale Systems, Kurt Ferreira

Computer Science ETDs

Next-generation exascale systems, those capable of performing a quintillion operations per second, are expected to be delivered in the next 8-10 years. These systems, which will be 1,000 times faster than current systems, will be of unprecedented scale. As these systems continue to grow in size, faults will become increasingly common, even over the course of small calculations. Therefore, issues such as fault tolerance and reliability will limit application scalability. Current techniques to ensure progress across faults like checkpoint/restart, the dominant fault tolerance mechanism for the last 25 years, are increasingly problematic at the scales of future systems due to …

Cultural Orientation And Drinking Behaviors Among Chinese University Students, Shiyuan Wang Dec 2011

Cultural Orientation And Drinking Behaviors Among Chinese University Students, Shiyuan Wang

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study aimed to develop a cultural orientation instrument among Chinese university students and to investigate the relationship between cultural orientation and their drinking behaviors. Four research questions were raised regarding these two objectives. A sample of 1421 students from universities in Beijing, Kunming and Wuhan participated in this study. The final instrument included 67 items consisting of 10 factors that loaded on two second-order factors: Chinese and Western culture. Thus, four categories of cultural orientation (Traditional, Western, Bicultural and Marginal) emerged, confirming the applicability of Berry’s acculturation theory in cultural orientation. The result also indicated that traditional oriented group …

Effective Science Teachers’ Professional Development: A Multiple-Case Study Of District-Level Science Supervisors’ Perspectives, Chris J. Schaben Dec 2011

Effective Science Teachers’ Professional Development: A Multiple-Case Study Of District-Level Science Supervisors’ Perspectives, Chris J. Schaben

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

At its heart, science teachers’ professional development is about continual growth and improvement (Yager, 2005). Conducting research to understand what constitutes effective professional development is inherently complex (Hewson, 2007). The imperative to link research on professional development to student achievement (Fishman, Marx, Best, & Tal, 2003) increases complexity of research on the topic. These complexities require multiple research approaches and indicate that all stakeholders could provide insights to identify what constitutes effective professional development. District-level science supervisors’ voices are missing from the data on effective science teachers’ professional development and this provides a potential gap in the literature (Banilower, Heck, …

“The Grin Of The Skull Beneath The Skin:” Reassessing The Power Of Comic Characters In Gothic Literature, Amanda D. Drake Dec 2011

“The Grin Of The Skull Beneath The Skin:” Reassessing The Power Of Comic Characters In Gothic Literature, Amanda D. Drake

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Neither representative of aesthetic flaws or mere comic relief, comic characters within Gothic narratives challenge and redefine the genre in ways that open up, rather than confuse, critical avenues. Comic characters in the Gothic texts of Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, and Clara Reeve establish the comic as a serious and legitimate part of the Gothic aesthetic. Comic characters continue to appear in all forms of the Gothic, including its parodies, well into the nineteenth-century, suggesting that these characters endure as necessary and vital elements within the evolving Gothic genre. As the genre evolves, the characters evolve as well, progressing from …

Religious Affiliation And Attendance As Predictors Of Immigration Attitudes In Nebraska, Courtney Lyons Breitkreutz Dec 2011

Religious Affiliation And Attendance As Predictors Of Immigration Attitudes In Nebraska, Courtney Lyons Breitkreutz

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study examines the relationship between religious affiliation, church attendance, and attitudes towards immigration. Following the ethnoreligious perspective, I predict that those who identify as Mainline Protestant, Evangelical Protestant, or Catholic will hold more positive attitudes than those who do not affiliate, which would reflect the teachings of their churches. I also predict that Catholics may have particularly positive attitudes because of social identity theory. Attending church services should be associated with more positive attitudes, according to religious restructuralism. Using 2006 telephone survey data of 1,135 Nebraskans from the Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (NASIS), I use binary logistic regression …

Federalizing Medicaid, Nicole Huberfeld Dec 2011

Federalizing Medicaid, Nicole Huberfeld

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This Article is one of only a small number of proposals over the past forty-six years for federalizing Medicaid. None of these proposals has grappled directly with the reasons that Medicaid does not satisfy federalism goals, and thus a key reason for modernizing Medicaid’s structure has been ignored. Despite being an area of “traditional state concern,” healthcare should no longer be left to the economic and political whims of the states, as Medicaid is not an effective Brandeisian “laboratory of the states.” Admittedly, some would oppose centralization on the ideological grounds that more federal government power is bad, and more …

Fundamental Rights In Latin America A Comparative Study Addressing Human Rights Violations In Venezuela, Colombia, And Argentina, Maria Eugenia Rios Dec 2011

Fundamental Rights In Latin America A Comparative Study Addressing Human Rights Violations In Venezuela, Colombia, And Argentina, Maria Eugenia Rios

HIM 1990-2015

Over the last few decades the importance of human rights has increased considerably in international relations. With globalization and democratization, more states and individuals develop concerns about the fundamental rights every human is entitled to; regardless of sex, religion and ethnicity. Latin American countries began obtaining their independence over 200 years ago while progressing into becoming working democracies. Yet, they have been plagued by oscillating authoritarian regimes and social conflicts that constrain and inhibit their hopeful development. The majority of the Latin American states have reached a point where further positive growth was expected; yet human violations have taken a …

Explaining The Economic Control Of Iran By The Irgc, Matthew Douglas Robin

HIM 1990-2015

In 1979, Iran underwent the Islamic Revolution, which radically changed society. The Iranian Revolution Guard (IRGC) was born from the revolution and has witnessed its role in society changed over time. Many have said the IRGC has reached the apex of its power and is one of if not the dominating force in Iranian society. The most recent extension of the IRGC's control is in the economic realm. The purpose of this research is to explain the reasoning and mechanism behind this recent gain in power. The literature review demonstrates flaws by previous studies of Iran. Most used a singular …

Rand Takes On The Constitution An Objectivist Perspective Of The United States Constitution, Farin C. Robinson Dec 2011

Rand Takes On The Constitution An Objectivist Perspective Of The United States Constitution, Farin C. Robinson

HIM 1990-2015

Author and philosopher Ayn Rand has gathered a cult like following thanks to her bestselling novels We the Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Through Rand's fictional writings she illustrates the principles of her philosophy objectivism. Objectivism employs five principles; objective reality, reason, self -interest, capitalism and individualism as the truths that govern the philosophy. Objectivists believe that their self-reliant philosophy holds the key to all life's answers. This thesis examines the following question: what would the founder of objectivism Ayn Rand think about the U.S. Constitution? Sadly Ayn Rand passed away in 1982 and never expressed her full …
