Cavaliers, Heroes, And Devils: A Metaphoric Criticism Of Dan Gilbert’S Attempt To Dethrone The King Of Cleveland, Darren Valenta
Cavaliers, Heroes, And Devils: A Metaphoric Criticism Of Dan Gilbert’S Attempt To Dethrone The King Of Cleveland, Darren Valenta
Humanities and Creative Projects
This study focuses on the letter written by Dan Gilbert, the owner of the National Basketball Association’s Cleveland Cavaliers, in response to LeBron James’ decision on July 8, 2010, to play for another franchise. Metaphoric criticism is used to examine this artifact to reveal Gilbert’s motives for fabricating this letter. The discovered metaphors include LeBron as villain, LeBron as native son, LeBron as fallen hero/king/god, and ownership as hero. These separate metaphors coalesce to form the ultimate metaphor of LeBron as devil and expose Gilbert’s true feelings of anguish and betrayal after James’ departure. Particular attention is paid to what …

Watch What You Eat: From Self-Surveillance To Affective Eating, Constance Calice
Watch What You Eat: From Self-Surveillance To Affective Eating, Constance Calice
Cultural Studies Capstone Papers
How is it that Americans are so obsessed with nutrition and dieting and yet remain unhealthy? This project attempts to give a theoretically driven answer to this great paradox within the Western diet. Constance Calice analyzes the practice and rhetoric of dieting as a crystallization of a problematic relationship to food using a Foucauldian understanding of discipline. Using examples from the media, she illustrates the way in which outside forces effect our food choices and the power relationships formed in this exchange. To offer an alternative view to nutritionism she looks to the Local Food Movement and affect theory to …

Lessons From Gilead: Producing A Student-Directed Musical At Western Kentucky University, Stephen G. Tabor
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
In recent years there has been a surge of interest in directing musical theatre in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Western Kentucky University. Western’s theatre department offers three directing classes and three musical theatre classes, but no class that teaches how to direct musical theatre. The Musical Theatre History and Repertoire class, however, provides students with the opportunity to present half-hour summaries of musicals, in order to experience the process of succinctly telling a story with scenes and songs. It is because of this class that I and many other students have taken an interest in the art …

Envisioning An African Child Development Field, Kofi Marfo
Envisioning An African Child Development Field, Kofi Marfo
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Institutionalization of an African child development field is a necessary aspect of strategies for strengthening the continent’s contributions to a global knowledge base. A disciplinary structure advances inquiry as it facilitates professionalization and provides space to formulate the canons and conventions that will guide knowledge production and the preparation and socialization of future researchers. Using the term disciplinary development to denote the process of bringing such a field about, this article outlines a pathway to disciplinary development, emphasizing important lessons that must be learned from (a) internal challenges to knowledge production in African universities, (b) Euro-American psychology’s disciplinary development history, …

Contribution Of Dietary Supplements To The Nutritional Status Of College Students, Caroline Yu
Contribution Of Dietary Supplements To The Nutritional Status Of College Students, Caroline Yu
Honors Scholar Theses
Little is known about the prevalence of dietary supplement usage among college students. Though taking dietary supplements can cover nutrient shortages not achieved through diet alone, it is often recommended to improve the quality of one's diet rather than rely on supplements. The main objective of this research study was to determine the prevalence of dietary supplement use among college students in relation to a variety of demographic and lifestyle variables, and to find out what portion of total nutrient intake is supplied by supplements. Subjects were all recruited from the University of Connecticut, and each participant completed a health …
Faith Versus Reason: A Discourse Analysis, Eric M. Hengstebeck
Faith Versus Reason: A Discourse Analysis, Eric M. Hengstebeck
Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal
The debate between reason and faith has grown to a fever pitch in recent years. My paper aims to make a contribution to this debate by suggesting a way beyond the trap of reason, by offering narrative rationality as an alternative to the epistemological terms of rationality established by reason. To do this I apply discourse analysis to a debate between Sam Harris and Andrew Sullivan with the aim of showing how narrative rationality might offer a productive response to reductive accounts of reason.

Texting Versus Talking: Age Sex And Extroversion As Predictors Of Frequency And Preference Among An Undergraduate Cohort., Chris J. Labowe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines text messaging behavior of ETSU undergraduates. Data come from a survey of 485 students enrolled during the 2010 fall semester. The current study explores the effects of sex, age, and extroversion on (1) the volume of texts a person sends and (2) preferences for texting or calling. The study also explores the use of cell phones as a means of avoiding others during co-present interaction. Findings reveal that age is the strongest predictor of text messaging, with younger respondents being more likely to text. The study also finds that women prefer texting, while men prefer voice calls. …

The Word And The World: Exploring World Views Of Monolingual And Bilingual Chinese Through The Use Of Proverbs, Li Ma
Open Access Dissertations
Many thinkers argue that major differences among languages lead to major differences in experience and thought. Each speech community possibly embodies a distinct world view. The purpose of this study was to explore, through the use of proverbs, the relationship between acculturation and world views among monolingual and bilingual Chinese, with proficiency in Chinese and/or English used a proxy for level of acculturation. Data were collected through questionnaires and qualitative interviews regarding attitudes to English and Chinese proverbs. Data were analyzed by means of SPSS and modified grounded theory methodology. The statistical and qualitative findings contradicted each other: the former …
Aligning Organizational Culture To Training And Development In A Spiritually Based Company, Jasmine Williams
Aligning Organizational Culture To Training And Development In A Spiritually Based Company, Jasmine Williams
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Drawing on research about the increasing number of organizations that label themselves Christian-based companies (Ibrahim, Rue, McDougal, & Greene, 1991), training and development, and spirituality in the workplace, this study investigates the ways in which the Chick-fil-A© corporation aligns their training and development practices toward achievement of their corporate purpose. The corporate purpose of Chick-fil-A© as recorded on the company‘s website is ―to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A©‖ (Chick-fil-A©, 2010). The researcher seeks to determine whether the organizational …

Political Institutions And Regional Inequality In China: 1949 To 2005, Qiang Yan
Political Institutions And Regional Inequality In China: 1949 To 2005, Qiang Yan
Dissertations
Patterns of economic inequality across three Chinese regions-- the West, the Inland, and the Coastal area-- changed twice from 1949 to 2005. During the period 1949 to 1979 regional inequality decreased, and after 1979 inequality increased. Previous studies, including economic models, cultural studies, and international relations theory, cannot fully explain changes in Chinese regional inequality after 1949. This dissertation uses Institutional Theory (IT) to analyze the changing patterns of Chinese regional economic inequality after 1949. Analyzing economic data and political documents with IT, the dissertation shows that changes in Chinese political institutions, including political parties, policy-making agencies, and institutionalized ideologies, …
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Social Influence: An Empirical Comparison Of Two Theoretical Models, Chauncy Thomas Brinton
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Social Influence: An Empirical Comparison Of Two Theoretical Models, Chauncy Thomas Brinton
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The relationship between social influence and self-esteem was examined in two studies from the lens of two different theoretical approaches, Leary’s sociometer theory and Henriques’ Unified Theory of Psychology (HUTP). Whereas sociometer theory contends that self-esteem functions completely as a barometer of relational value, HUTP posits that human self-esteem should also be significantly influenced by the cultural context, especially the extent to which self-enhancement is justified. This conception leads to the prediction that socialization will influence self-esteem, after controlling for social influence. Specifically, individuals socialized to self-enhance should demonstrate higher levels of self-esteem after controlling for social influence. Two studies …

Religion, Spirituality, And School Psychology: A National Survey Of Training Programs, Jessica Marie Bass
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
As school psychologists strive to become culturally competent in our growing diverse society, an important piece that seems to missing from the typically accessed conceptualization of culture is religion and spirituality. The focus of this study was to survey NASP approved training programs to determine how these programs intentionally incorporate knowledge and skills and determine the competence of their graduate students in matters of religion and spirituality. All NASP approved school psychology programs were sent a survey and the program director served as the sole participant. Most programs do not believe that their students have been involved in casework involving …

Counterpublics And Aesthetics: Afro-Hispanic And Belizean Women Writers., Melva Marguerite Persico
Open Access Dissertations
My project explores ways in which legitimacy is granted within the literary field. This is done through an analysis of literary anthologies, university course syllabi, publishing trends, literary prizes, and levels and sources of critical attention. The project seeks to determine the extent to which the works of Afro-descendant Spanish American and Belizean writers are reflected in the hegemonic Spanish American and Anglophone Caribbean literary canons. I examine the works of Cristina Rodríguez Cabral (Uruguay), Shirley Campbell Barr, and Delia McDonald Woolery (Costa Rica), and Zee Edgell, and Zoila Ellis (Belize). The project records the varying degrees of legitimation these …

Ground Zero: Tourism, Terrorism, And Global Imagination, Maxwell E. Loos
Ground Zero: Tourism, Terrorism, And Global Imagination, Maxwell E. Loos
International Studies Honors Projects
At Ground Zero, the transnational phenomena of tourism and terrorism intersect. In this thesis, I introduce the concept of global imagination, and analyze how tourism and terrorism affect this process of global imagination for Americans, arguing that tourism plays an important role in constructing a globe, while terrorism – particularly the 9/11 attacks – works to interrupt imaginative process itself. I then explore how tourism of terrorism at Ground Zero influences global imagination, containing the events of 9/11, allowing for the construction of only a very specific globe in which the U.S. is an innocent, benevolent actor in world history.
Defining The Bacterial Flora Of Periodontal Pockets In Chronic Periodontitis Patients, Rafael Rodriguez
Defining The Bacterial Flora Of Periodontal Pockets In Chronic Periodontitis Patients, Rafael Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the subgingival bacterial biodiversity in untreated chronic periodontitis patients through the use of next generation 16S rRNA molecular analysis, and to determine similarities or differences between deep and shallow pockets within the same patients. METHODS: The analysis involved paired subgingival plaque samples from 24 subjects diagnosed with Generalized Moderate to Severe Chronic Periodontitis. One sample was selected from a single site having a probing depth >5 mm (i.e. Deep Site), and the other from a site with a probing depth <3mm (i.e. Shallow Site) within each subject. Bacterial DNA amplification of the V4-V6 region of the 16S rRNA was performed. The amplicons were sequenced via 454 Roche Genome Sequencer FLX System. The identified sequences were evaluated, and then compared to calculated false discovery rates. RESULTS: A total of 119 independent microbial genera were identified within the samples analyzed. Seven genera were identified to be statistically significant (p<0.05) in their association to deep or shallow sites following t-test and boot strap randomization: Actinomyces (p=0.004), Methylobacterium (p=0.028), Veillonella (p=0.028), and Rothia (p=0.038), and Streptococcus (p=0.033) in Shallow sites; while Mycoplasma (p=0.007) and Fusobacterium (p=0.016) were associated with deep sites. However, taking into account the calculated false discovery rates, it is suggested that none of the 119 microbial genera identified in this study were significantly associated with either deep nor shallow sites. CONCLUSION: The microbial genera identified within this study to be associated with deep and shallow sites follows the traditional pattern anticipated from the literature. However, the calculated false discovery rates suggest that these results may have occurred by chance and not due to a true difference.
