Anticancer Effects Of Red Raspberries On Immune Cells And Blood Parameters, Jannet Romero

All Dissertations

There is an abundance of research correlating diets rich in fruits and vegetables to the reduction or prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Plants extracts have also been claimed to possess antiviral, antibacterial, and immunological properties. This study focused on the in vitro and in vivo effects of a water extract from lyophilized Meeker red raspberries on tumor cell viability and immune parameters. A large number of studies have demonstrated the cytotoxic effect of different fruit juices and extracts against tumor cell lines in vitro. However, studies also show that the blood plasma levels of berry …

"When They Called Us Jie Mei (Sister)" An Autoethnographic And Narrative Study Of Religious Development In Emerging Adulthood, Katie Nichole Ball

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The years from the late teens through the twenties increasingly have become an important area of study. The age range between 18 and 25 makes up a new, distinct developmental period that is referred to as “emerging adulthood.” Recent work has suggested that individuals engage in their most extensive identity exploration during emerging adulthood. This study uses autoethnography and narrative biographical material to study emerging adulthood in the contexts of spiritual and personal growth. The study explored adult development among young women serving abroad as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The sample consisted of …

Curating Cultures: An Empirical Inquiry, Toni Laviece Calder Aug 2011

Curating Cultures: An Empirical Inquiry, Toni Laviece Calder

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The last twenty-five years have witnessed not only a veritable explosion of critical discourses across the entire gamut of academic disciplines, but also the virtual inseparability that characterizes their contemporary entanglement with one another and within the field of art history. Moreover, it is safe to say that each and every one of those fields of inquiry has made its mark on the discourse of non-Western art in some way. But while the post-colonial writer may address the visual arts and their involvement in Western cultural hegemony, or the curator of an exhibition might quote Said, or the catalogue might …

Mood Of Metaphor: Tropicality And Time In The Philippine Poetic, Jayson Pilapil Jacobo Aug 2011

Mood Of Metaphor: Tropicality And Time In The Philippine Poetic, Jayson Pilapil Jacobo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

When the trope is exhilarated and enervated by a milieu, which in this case is tropical, the category of mood must be apprehended as a theoretical opportunity where a phenomenology of the time that it takes for the imagination to work through the limits of the earth could be delineated. What is at the heart of this undertaking is to draw the history and theory of metaphor in the Philippines nearer to its original point of reference--nativity, where time is posited as self-generative in its commencement, but also potentially moving towards the modern, in spite of this anterior existence. The …

The Effects Of Self-Expansion In Relationships On Nicotine Craving In Deprived Smokers: Fmri And Behavioral Evidence, Xiaomeng Xu Aug 2011

The Effects Of Self-Expansion In Relationships On Nicotine Craving In Deprived Smokers: Fmri And Behavioral Evidence, Xiaomeng Xu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

fMRI studies have found that brain areas associated with the reward of relationship self-expansion are also the same areas that are associated with the reward of smoking cigarettes (Aron et al. | 2005; Ikemoto et al. | 2006; Xu et al. | 2011). This raises the possibility that one reward may be able to substitute for another, and that self-expansion may be able to aid in smoking abstinence and cessation. One recent study found that successful quitters experienced significantly more self-expanding experiences (both in and out of the relationships context) immediately prior to their quitting, and even unsuccessful quitters were …

The Effect Of Endpoint Knowledge On Dot Enumeration, Alex Michael Moore Aug 2011

The Effect Of Endpoint Knowledge On Dot Enumeration, Alex Michael Moore

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study attempts to extend the principle tenets of the Overlapping Waves Theory (Siegler, 1996), a framework designed to explain the progression of trends in cognitive development, to adult participants’ performance in a dot enumeration task. Literature in the 0-100 number line estimation task (Siegler & Booth, 2004, Ashcraft & Moore, 2011) has revealed a pervasive trend in child estimation such that young children (especially those in kindergarten) respond with a logarithmic line of best fit, while children at the third grade and above overwhelmingly respond with linear estimates to this same range of numbers. A similar developmental trend is …

Postmodern Subjects And The Nation: Contemporary Arab Women Writers' Reconfigurations Of Home And Belonging, Ghadir Khalil Zannoun Aug 2011

Postmodern Subjects And The Nation: Contemporary Arab Women Writers' Reconfigurations Of Home And Belonging, Ghadir Khalil Zannoun

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A lot has been said about the declining status of national paradigms. Most recently, the forces of change have been located in the transnational and global phenomenon. Contemporary Arabic literature, however, identifies globalism as only one among many factors undermining the existing national formations in the Arab countries. Among these factors is the postcolonial condition, and in the case of Palestine, the struggle against the continuing military occupation of Palestinian lands, wholesale and unsystematized modernization, and complex internal Social, cultural, religious and racial differences exacerbated by neo-colonialism. The contemporary Arab women writers' fiction analyzed in this dissertation posits yet another …

Mitigating Cisplatin Resistance In Ovarian Cancer., Clarisse S. Muenyi Aug 2011

Mitigating Cisplatin Resistance In Ovarian Cancer., Clarisse S. Muenyi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Epithelial Ovarian cancer (EOC) is the leading cause of gynecological cancer death in the USA. Recurrence rates are high after front-line platinum chemotherapy and most patients eventually die from platinum-resistant disease. P53 plays an important role in cellular response to platinum-DNA damage. It transcriptionally activates XPC, a platinum-DNA damage recognition protein in the global genome repair (GGR), sub-pathway of nucleotide excision repair (NER). The goal of this research is to investigate the effect of a novel combination of cisplatin, sodium arsenite (NaAs02) and hyperthermia (CPA 39 DC) on EOC cells with different p53 status. Human EOC cells were treated with …

Development And Evaluation Of Polymeric Implants Of Curcumin For Enhanced Chemopreventive Activity., Shyam Sunder Bansal Aug 2011

Development And Evaluation Of Polymeric Implants Of Curcumin For Enhanced Chemopreventive Activity., Shyam Sunder Bansal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Curcumin, a plant derived compound has shown significant potency against various chronic diseases like cancer in cell culture and animal studies. However, the introduction of this compound into clinical setting is limited by its poor oral bioavailability and thereby requires high doses for efficacy. We hypothesized that localized/systemic delivery of curcumin by polymeric implants can improve its efficacy by bypassing the oral route and by restricting majority of the drug at the tumor site. Therefore, we developed a polymeric implantable drug delivery system using poly (E-caprolactone) as the polymer and optimized it with respect to polymer molecular weight, drug load …

Prevention And Treatment Of Lung Cancer By Green Tea Polyphenols., Pengxiao Cao Aug 2011

Prevention And Treatment Of Lung Cancer By Green Tea Polyphenols., Pengxiao Cao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Green tea polyphenols (GTPs) are gaining increasing attention because of their potential anti-tumor effects. However, poor oral bioavailability limits their efficacy in vivo. In this dissertation, two hypotheses were tested: 1) GTPs administered systemically by a sustained release system will circumvent the problem of limited bioavailability and lower the effective dose compared to the traditional oral route, and 2) adjuvant treatment of GTPs with a standard chemotherapeutic agent (e.g. cisplatin) will enhance efficacy of the therapeutic agent. In our lab, a polymeric implant delivery system was developed, in which GTPs were uniformly embedded within a polycaprolactone matrix to provide sustained …

The Rhetoric Of A Buffy Fandom : A Study Of Fan Writing, Interaction, And Activism In An Online Community Environment, Kristen Julia Anderson

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

As a topic for academic focus, fan fiction provides a unique medium for studying how multiple factors intersect with and influence a writer from invention to creation through revision. The act of writing fan fiction itself provides multiple possibilities for engaging with and analyzing a source text. In addition, an interactive online fan fiction community formed and based around a specific idea becomes, not only a location for sharing common interests, but also a space for active discourse. Arguments presented in a fan fiction online community are strengthened and supported through the writings posted within its frames. My thesis studies …

Predicting Intent To Install A Rain Garden To Protect A Local Lake: An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Bret R. Shaw, Barry T. Radler, Richard Chenoweth, Paul Heiberger, Paul Dearlove

Journal of Extension

Many lakes are degraded by urban stormwater runoff. One way to reduce these impacts is installing rain gardens that absorb water running off impervious surfaces. The study reported here explored how the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) can be used to inform storm water management outreach campaigns. Regression analyses of survey data were used to inform how Extension natural resource educators can more effectively encourage people to install rain gardens. Attitudes toward rain gardens and subjective norms were positively associated with behavioral intent. Perceived behavioral control was not significantly associated with behavioral intent. Implications for Extension educators are discussed.

Iron Limitation Of A Springtime Bacterial And Phytoplankton Community In The Ross Sea: Implications For Vitamin B12 Nutrition, Erin M. Bertrand, Mak A. Saito, Peter A. Lee, Robert B. Dunbar, Peter N. Sedwick, Giacomo R. Ditullio

OES Faculty Publications

The Ross Sea is home to some of the largest phytoplankton blooms in the Southern Ocean. Primary production in this system has previously been shown to be iron limited in the summer and periodically iron and vitamin B-12 colimited. In this study, we examined trace metal limitation of biological activity in the Ross Sea in the austral spring and considered possible implications for vitamin B-12 nutrition. Bottle incubation experiments demonstrated that iron limited phytoplankton growth in the austral spring while B-12, cobalt, and zinc did not. This is the first demonstration of iron limitation in a Phaeocystis antarctica-dominated, early …

Paradigma Ilmiah Pada Ilmu Sosial-Budaya Kontemporer, Akhyar Yusuf Jul 2011

Paradigma Ilmiah Pada Ilmu Sosial-Budaya Kontemporer, Akhyar Yusuf

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

An American philosopher, Thomas Samuel Kuhn (1922-1996) in his books, The Structure of Scientific Revolution (1962) and The Essential Tension; Selected Studies in Scientific Tradition and Change (1977) poses a paradigm of a universal foundation of science which uses a common fact, method, language and criteria. He does not think that even in the realm of the natural sciences, there are differences, more so that there is a paradigm in the humanities including the arts and literature. Kuhn, however, has established a new paradigm for the philosophy of science which he called “the sociology of science” or a social construction, …

Pedagogy On The Ethnomathematics--Epistemology Nexus: A Manifesto, Ilhan M. Izmirli Jul 2011

Pedagogy On The Ethnomathematics--Epistemology Nexus: A Manifesto, Ilhan M. Izmirli

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In this paper, we will elaborate on a pronouncement that should be at the onset of any study in epistemology and ethnomathematics, namely, we will argue that learners do think mathematically and it is our responsibility as educators to recognize and appreciate their modes of mathematical reasoning.

We will conduct our study in five parts. Following a brief introduction, in the second part, we will briefly discuss some of the critical tenets of epistemology especially as it applies to mathematics. The third part will be devoted to elucidating the basic nomenclature and hypotheses associated with ethnomathematics. In the fourth part …

Communication Deviance, Expressed Emotion, And Family Cohesion In Schizophrenia, Radha G. Carlson Jul 2011

Communication Deviance, Expressed Emotion, And Family Cohesion In Schizophrenia, Radha G. Carlson

Open Access Dissertations

Although schizophrenia is a biologically-based disorder, environmental stress (including stress within familial relationships) plays a major role in the onset and maintenance of symptoms. This study examined family variables that have implications for psychotherapeutic treatment of schizophrenia. Previous research has found Communication Deviance (CD), Expressed Emotion (EE), and family cohesion (FC) to be related to symptom severity. However, the exact nature of the relationship between these constructs is unclear. The current study tested a model whereby the tone and content of family member’s communication (EE) and the sense of family unity (FC) are hypothesized to mediate the relationship between CD …

Temple Of Ancient Knowing: Music Therapy Portraits Of Globalized Indian Identity, Sangeeta Swamy Jul 2011

Temple Of Ancient Knowing: Music Therapy Portraits Of Globalized Indian Identity, Sangeeta Swamy

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This dissertation study assessed ethnic identity in adults of Indian origin through Culturally Centered Music & Imagery (CCMI), an arts-based, psychotherapeutic technique. The purpose was to examine how Indian music, in the context of CCMI, could evoke identity-based imagery and assess Indian identity in a globalized context. Five Indian men and women participated in CCMI sessions, and the qualitative methodology of portraiture was used in this study. The results provide support for the cultural or ethnic unconscious and suggest the potential for CCMI to access this internal, collective space. Results also indicate that CCMI may be used in a clinical …

Ethnic/Racial Differences In The Experience Of Burden And Psychological Outcomes For Caregivers Of Patients With Schizophrenia: The Influence Of Family Cohesion And Interdependence, Giulia C. Suro Jul 2011

Ethnic/Racial Differences In The Experience Of Burden And Psychological Outcomes For Caregivers Of Patients With Schizophrenia: The Influence Of Family Cohesion And Interdependence, Giulia C. Suro

Open Access Theses

Research has demonstrated that taking care of a patient with schizophrenia has serious mental health costs to caregivers including high levels of burden and poorer overall mental health. Research also indicates that caregivers from certain ethnic/racial groups may fare better in this process. Specifically, prior research indicates that African American and Hispanic caregivers often exhibit better mental health than their Caucasian counterparts. Using a sample of 176 caregivers of patients with schizophrenia, the present study was specifically aimed at examining whether three variables (caregiver burden, family cohesion and interdependence) may account for part of the formerly observed ethnic/racial differences in …

Teaching Social Justice Through The Lens Of Multicultural Education, Alana Cimillo Jul 2011

Teaching Social Justice Through The Lens Of Multicultural Education, Alana Cimillo

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

With public school populations growing in socio-economic and racial diversity, as projected by the Census Bureau, there is a clear need for an understanding of this diversity to occur at the early childhood level. In order to truly adopt multicultural education as an integral part of a student’s academic growth, teachers must consider the meaning of “cultural competence”. In the first years of a student’s education, fundamental values can be developed as the building blocks for future culturally responsive human beings. This presentation will review concrete evidence that supports the incorporation of multicultural education early childhood classrooms.
