Musical, Rhetorical, And Visual Material In The Work Of Feldman, Kurt Ozment Sep 2011

Musical, Rhetorical, And Visual Material In The Work Of Feldman, Kurt Ozment

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Musical, Rhetorical, and Visual Material in the Work of Feldman" Kurt Ozment compares early and late scores by Morton Feldman and argues that Feldman's interest in the visuality of the score was not limited to his experiments with graphic notation. More specifically, Projection 3 (1951) and String Quartet (II) (1983) suggest that Feldman experimented with notation from beginning to end. Up until the early 1980s, one of Feldman's main strategies for commenting on his music was to refer to painting. In his essay "Crippled Symmetry" and in an interview with the percussionist Jan Williams, Feldman also turns …

Digital Media, 419, And The Politics Of The Global Network, Paul Benzon Sep 2011

Digital Media, 419, And The Politics Of The Global Network, Paul Benzon

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Digital Media, 419, and the Politics of the Global Network" Paul Benzon analyzes advance fee fraud, a scam in which con artists communicate with potential victims via email, promising them a monetary reward in return for financial assistance in extracting an allegedly astronomical (yet ultimately nonexistent) fortune from within a geographical zone often characterized as highly violent and unstable. Advance fee fraud is often referred to simply as 419, in accordance with the section of Nigerian penal code that addresses fraud. Benzon reads advance fee fraud as a practice of epistolary narrative that self-consciously allegorizes central processes …

Intermediality As Cultural Literacy And Teaching The Graphic Novel, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2011

Intermediality As Cultural Literacy And Teaching The Graphic Novel, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Intermediality as Cultural Literacy and Teaching the Graphic Novel" Geert Vandermeersche and Ronald Soetaert argue for the inclusion of the graphic novel for the teaching of cultural literacy and literature. As the printed book is no longer the sole carrier of cultural literacy, Vandermeersche and Soetaert postulate that literary culture must be repositioned in intermedial culture and practices. In order to do so, Vandermeersche and Soetaert apply Werner Wolf's typology of intermediality, aspects of narratology, and scholarship about comics. Following a theoretical discussion they analyze the graphic novel series The Unwritten, a text that thematizes the …

Digital Humanities In Developed And Emerging Markets, Verena Laschinger

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Digital Humanities in Developed and Emerging Markets" Verena Laschinger discusses the impact e-culture has on humanities pedagogy both in affluent countries and emerging markets. Claiming that e-literacy training generally offers opportunities to recover the traditional agency of the humanities thus catapulting the disciplines into the educational forefront of the creative economy, special attention is given to the chances digital humanities education offers in Turkey’s emerging market economy. Given that technology promotes the country's economic development, which includes a rapidly growing private educational sector, digital humanities education helps citizens to adjust to critical democratic exchange, to facilitate and …

Intermediality, Architecture, And The Politics Of Urbanity, Virgilio Tortosa Garrigós Sep 2011

Intermediality, Architecture, And The Politics Of Urbanity, Virgilio Tortosa Garrigós

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Intermediality, Architecture, and the Politics of Urbanity" Virgilio Tortosa Garrigós discusses aspects of the exponential development of large cities, the neoliberal economy, and the "spectacle" of architecture in the context of intermediality. With the connivance between land speculators and politicians — which has led not only to the loss of spatial identity but to irreversible pollution and geographic degradation — urbanity is epitomized on the Mediterranean coast line. In reaction to this development, a series of anti-globalization organizations and social movements, rooted in urban neighbourhoods, resist the homogenization of taste with anti-billboards and anti-advertising against consumerism and …

Intersubjectivity And Intermediality In The Work Of Serra, Rocío Von Jungenfeld Sep 2011

Intersubjectivity And Intermediality In The Work Of Serra, Rocío Von Jungenfeld

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Intersubjectivity and Intermediality in the work of Serra" Rocío von Jungenfeld examines the intersubjective space in which artworks are conceived and the cross boundaries of media in order to construct a general understanding of intersubjective perception in visual and plastic arts and an understanding of the processes that determine works of art, reflective perception, and intersubjective experience. Although the argument is that perception is subjective and untransferable, (i.e., a unique personal experience) influenced by innumerable factors and bound to a specific context, there are some elements of perception which can be understood intersubjectively as they apply to …

A Case Study Of (Inter)Medial Participation, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "A Case Study of (Inter)medial Participation" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek presents survey data followed by quantitative and qualitative analysis about the daily intake of media in cultural participation. The survey data of the study are the result of questionnaires conducted 2001-2002 with advanced undergraduate students enrolled in media and communication studies at Northeastern University and with advanced undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Halle-Wittenberg. As the survey was conducted in 2001-2002, the data and the analysis have "historical" relevance with regard to (inter)medial cultural participation in the digital age. The data are from a mid-size …

Participational Agency, Stephen C. Yanchar Sep 2011

Participational Agency, Stephen C. Yanchar

Faculty Publications

Participational agency is presented as a conceptual account of human action, volition, and possibility. Rooted in hermeneutic and narrative traditions, this view differs from other theorizing about agency (and most psychological theorizing in general) in that it makes no effort to explain human action by virtue of reified constructs. As an alternative to traditional theorizing in this area, participational agency is defined as meaningful engagement in the world and treats the experienced meaningfulness of practical human activity as its central feature. The concept of meaningful engagement is clarified through the presentation of four related themes—situated participation, existential concern, dispositional action, …

A Naturalistic Study Of The Associations Between Changes In Alcohol Problems, Spiritual Functioning And Psychiatric Symptoms, Melissa L. Miller, Stephen M. Saunders

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The study evaluated how spiritual and religious functioning (SRF), alcohol-related problems, and psychiatric symptoms change over the course of treatment and follow-up. Problem drinkers (n = 55, including 39 males and 16 females) in outpatient treatment were administered questionnaires at pretreatment, posttreatment, and follow up, which assessed two aspects of SRF (religious well-being and existential well-being), two aspects of alcohol misuse (severity and consequences), and two aspects of psychiatric symptoms (depression and anxiety). Significant improvements in SRF, psychiatric symptoms and alcohol misuse were observed from pretreatment to follow-up. Although SRF scores were significantly correlated with psychiatric symptoms at all three …

Relationships Between Fathers' Attachment, Their Parenting Behaviors And Child Adjustment, Cristy Salome Ricaurte Aug 2011

Relationships Between Fathers' Attachment, Their Parenting Behaviors And Child Adjustment, Cristy Salome Ricaurte

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored how fathers' attachment in close relationships (as measured by three dimensions--(a) comfort with dependency, (b) comfort with closeness, and (c) relationship anxiety) relates to their observed parenting behaviors, and how the fathers' attachment dimensions are related to their children's adjustment outcomes. Differences in attachment dimensions between Mexican American and Caucasian fathers were also explored. The sample included in the analysis was a subset from the Supporting Father Involvement study based in California. Participants were ninety fathers, predominantly low-income, with two thirds Mexican American and approximately one fourth European American. The findings indicated that fathers' attachment was related …

Procrastination In Relation To Self-Efficacy In Graduate Students Writing A Doctoral Dissertation, Zoeн_ Alberta Kahn Aug 2011

Procrastination In Relation To Self-Efficacy In Graduate Students Writing A Doctoral Dissertation, Zoeн_ Alberta Kahn

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Procrastination and self-efficacy have been studied over the years; however, there is a gap in the literature on the relationship between the two constructs and in relation to the populations in which researchers have chosen to focus. The present study used quantitative approaches to explore the relationship, if any, that existed between procrastination and self-efficacy in graduate students finishing a doctoral dissertation (N=19). Data were collected using an anonymous online survey which included demographic questions, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and the Tuckman Procrastination Questionnaire (TPQ). The GSES calculated levels of self-efficacy and the TPQ assessed levels of procrastination. The …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study investigates the subjective experiences of Mexican migrant farmworking women in the South Texas region. This study will provide an understanding of how stress of the migrant farmwork lifestyle affects Mexican migrant farmworking women. Specifically, the line of inquiry is guided by one main research question: How do Mexican migrant farmworking women cope in reaction to stress? This study reviews a range of literature on migrant farmworkers and the significant stressors they are faced with. Through their own narratives, 12 female Mexican migrant farmworkers from the South Texas region reveal how they are confronted with the complex stressors …

Los Tres Grandes - Herman Gallegos, Ernesto Galarza, Julian Samora: Rooted In Community, Guided By Friendship, Cultivating Leadership., Carmen R. Samora

American Studies ETDs

Los Tres Grandes, Ernesto Galarza, Herman Gallegos, and Julian Samora, fused intellectual constructs and grassroots strategies to reverse the societal dynamics they understood had marginalized Mexican Americans at both governmental and social levels. In 1968, the three scholar/activists launched the Southwest Council of La Raza (SWCLR), which four years later became the National Council of La Raza. My dissertation explores the relationship of these three men, a nexus of history and personality that launched what became the largest civil rights organization for Latinos in the United States. At a time when foundations earmarked minority support primarily for African Americans, Los …

Oxygen Isotopes In Diatom Silica : A New Understanding Of Silica-Water Oxygen Isotope Fractionation In Diatom Frustules And An Application Of Diatom D180 Values As A Record Of Paleohydrologic Variability In A Middle-Pleistocene Lacrustine Core From The Valles Caldera, New Mexico, Justin Dodd Aug 2011

Oxygen Isotopes In Diatom Silica : A New Understanding Of Silica-Water Oxygen Isotope Fractionation In Diatom Frustules And An Application Of Diatom D180 Values As A Record Of Paleohydrologic Variability In A Middle-Pleistocene Lacrustine Core From The Valles Caldera, New Mexico, Justin Dodd

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

I present oxygen isotope data from modern diatom frustules that were collected from freshwater systems in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. The frustules display a constant silica-water fractionation over the measured temperature range (5.1 to 37.8°C) regardless of species. This relationship is in close agreement with other published silica-water fractionation factors for laboratory cultured diatom samples; however, it is as much as 8° lower than equilibrium quartz-water fractionations and 3 to 4° lower than observed silica water fractionations in diatomaceous silica collected from sediment traps and sediment cores. Post mortem loss of organic material results in an alteration …

Land, Gender, And The Politics Of Identity Formation: Uncovering Hispana/Mexicana Voices In The Southwest, Karen R. Roybal

American Studies ETDs

The southwestern United States has an exceptional history that makes the region a prime focus for study concentrating on culture, tradition, language and land. As an area closely tied to the concept of conquest, the Southwest has had its share of issues related to colonization, imperialism, Manifest Destiny, and cultural erasure. This study focuses on the Southwest as a region that is closely linked to the land as it relates to the formation of identities of its people. Mexican Americans in the Southwest have historically experienced struggle, particularly after 1848 and the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, when …

African Americans (AA) tend to have heightened systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Endothelial microparticles (EMP) are released from activated/apoptotic endothelial cells (EC) when stimulated by inflammation. The purpose of our study was to assess EMP responses to inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α) and antioxidant (superoxide dismutase, SOD) conditions in human umbilical vein ECs (HUVECs) obtained from AA and Caucasians. EMPs were measured under four conditions: control (basal), TNF-α, SOD, and TNF-α + SOD. Culture supernatant was collected for EMP analysis by flow cytometry and IL-6 assay by ELISA. IL-6 protein expression was assessed by Western blot. AA HUVECs had greater EMP levels …

Using a exploratory approach, the study tested whether a consensus exists among advocates of these initiatives about the key concepts, exploring the meanings that scientists attach to the various mechanisms for sharing their work, and the social context in which this takes place. The study used a purposive sampling strategy to target scientists who have been active …

Knowledge Management In A Project Environment: Organisational Ct And Project Influences, Taya Polyaninova Aug 2011

Knowledge Management In A Project Environment: Organisational Ct And Project Influences, Taya Polyaninova

Articles

During a project implementation various forms of information and experience are generated within the organization. If this accumulated knowledge is not recorded and shared amongst other projects, this knowledge will be lost and no longer be available to assist future projects. This may lead to increased future projects costs as resources, time and money will be wasted on redefining the knowledge that once existed within the company. By not capturing and redeploying this knowledge, the quality of a project’s deliverables may adversely suffer. First the publication reviews the concept of project knowledge management. It defines the reasons for managing project …

Imagining The Saints: Representations Of Mormonism In American Culture, Jeremy R. Ricketts Aug 2011

Imagining The Saints: Representations Of Mormonism In American Culture, Jeremy R. Ricketts

American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to address how representations of Mormons in American culture reveal not only key aspects of the history of Mormonism in America but also tell us a great deal about American life and thought since the founding of the religion in 1830 to the present day (2011). Representations are powerful vehicles for creating, shaping, reflecting, and naturalizing society's understanding of religious institutions and revealing cultural concerns and anxieties, and the methodology of this dissertation thus focuses on interdisciplinary analytical critiques of diverse texts to better elucidate the complicated but deeply intertwined history of the Mormon …

Semiotics, Habitus And Music In The Transmission Of Tibetan Culture In Toronto, John Robertson Aug 2011

Semiotics, Habitus And Music In The Transmission Of Tibetan Culture In Toronto, John Robertson

Masters Theses

This ethnographic study explores the role of music in cultural transmission in the Tibetan community of Toronto, Canada. Beginning with an integration of Peircian semiotics, Bourdieu's habitus and musical semiosis, I then identify certain non-Tibetan cultural elements being encountered by those in the Toronto community which are potentially creating cognitive structures foreign to those which have their generative principles in pre-exile Tibetan past, and the ways in which Tibetans are transmitting (to varying degrees) cognitive schemata which identify these non-Tibetan elements and protect against their appropriation. After exploring elements which are not Tibetan, I turn to those which are: a …

A Genre-Specific Study Of English And Persian Newspaper Editorials / Alireza Bonyadi Babaee, Alireza Bonyadi Babaee Aug 2011

A Genre-Specific Study Of English And Persian Newspaper Editorials / Alireza Bonyadi Babaee, Alireza Bonyadi Babaee

Student Works (2010-2019)

Newspaper editorials constitute a part of media discourse, which is an extremely important field of research in intercultural rhetoric analysis. The interface between the linguistic analysis of newspaper editorials and teaching of English as a foreign/second language is also a relevant issue in language teaching. Thus, drawing on the theory of inter-cultural rhetoric analysis and considering the important role of newspaper editorials in shaping public opinions, the present study aimed at conducting a genre-specific analysis of newspaper editorials culled from the editorials of the English newspaper, The New York Times, and those of Persian newspaper, Tehran Times. Addressing different discourse …

The Holistic Complementary Structure Of Western Bio-Medicine And Traditional Healing And Achieving Complete Health, Candace Gail Oubre Aug 2011

The Holistic Complementary Structure Of Western Bio-Medicine And Traditional Healing And Achieving Complete Health, Candace Gail Oubre

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Achieving complete health requires a deep understanding of complementary cultural competency sensitivity between physician and patient. This may include but is not limited to access to preventative health care resources, access to health educational resources and access to cultural healing resources, for example, shamans, Ayurvedic physicians, and herbal healers. Advocates of cultural competency emphasize great importance on knowledge of the patients' cultural background; however, the transcendence of this knowledge can be explained further through complementary cultural competency sensitivity. This is when the cultures of the physician and patient complement each other in terms of understanding what is in the patients' …
