The Effect Of Culture On The Implementation Of International Financial Reporting Standards, Mitchell A. Skotarczyk
The Effect Of Culture On The Implementation Of International Financial Reporting Standards, Mitchell A. Skotarczyk
CMC Senior Theses
As globalization increases at a blistering pace, more and more business entities continue to get involved in cross-border capital investments. A considerable cost can be applied to these types of transaction for the translation of financial statements prepared under dissimilar accounting guidelines into a comparable form. There exist a multiple number of accounting systems that create these dissimilarities, because accounting is a language of business that has been created by society to provide information as to the economic health of an entity. Similar to any other language, varying types of “accounting language” are used across different regions of the globe …
The Effect Of Culture On Female Labor Force Partcipation, Joycelyn J. Ho
The Effect Of Culture On Female Labor Force Partcipation, Joycelyn J. Ho
CMC Senior Theses
This article looks at the effect of culture on female labor force participation. Proxies of culture used are Globe cultural social practice dimensions, and Hofstede cultural dimensions. This article finds that globe cultural dimensions have a stronger explantory value that Hofstede cultural dimensions. It confirms that gender eglaitarianism is a predictor of female labor force participation. It also suggests that assertiveness and uncertainty avoidance are also predictors of female labor force participation.
Trait Anxiety And Trait Disgust In Spider Phobia, Laura Vernon, Michiyo Hirai
Trait Anxiety And Trait Disgust In Spider Phobia, Laura Vernon, Michiyo Hirai
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
There is evidence for the role of trait anxiety in the specific phobias, and spider phobia in particular. Recently, trait disgust has received attention in relation to specific phobia and researchers and theorists have begun to address its contributions to phobia etiology, maintenance, and treatment processes. There is now strong evidence that a trait or dispositional proneness to experience disgust is related to spider phobia. What is perhaps more important is emerging evidence that both trait anxiety and trait disgust may contribute to spider phobia severity independently of one another. However, the overall picture is far from clear and distinguishing …
Securitizing Gender: Identity, Biometrics, And Transgender Bodies At The Airport, Paisley Currah, Tara Mulqueen
Securitizing Gender: Identity, Biometrics, And Transgender Bodies At The Airport, Paisley Currah, Tara Mulqueen
Publications and Research
It is widely assumed that the more information surveillance apparatuses can collect about an individual, the less risk she poses. In this article, we examine how gender figures into and potentially disrupts the link between identity and security. Our analysis centers on one very particular event: the confusion that erupts at the airport when US Transportation Security Administration agents perceive a conflict between the gender marked on one's papers, the image of one's body produced by a machine, and/or an individual's perceived gender presentation. Gender has been so deeply naturalized—as immutable, as easily apprehended, and as existing before and outside …

Gender, Genre And Slavery: The Other Rowson, Rowson's Others, Eileen Razzari Elrod
Gender, Genre And Slavery: The Other Rowson, Rowson's Others, Eileen Razzari Elrod
English
Readers familiar with Susanna Rowson as the author of Charlotte Temple (1791, 1794) do not think of her as an abolitionist. But in 1805 Rowson articulated an anti-slavery position in Universal Geography, a textbook addressed to schoolgirls such as those she herself taught at the Young Ladies Academy in Boston. Condemning those who viewed sugar and slavery as a winning equation that would make them rich, Rowson denounced the “purchase and sale of human beings,” and insisted that anyone “enlightened by reason and religion” would oppose the “horrid trade,” and see it as she did, as “a disgrace to humanity.”1 …
Domestic Violence In Men's And Women's Magazines: Women Are Guilty Of Choosing The Wrong Men, Men Are Not Guilty Of Hitting Women, Pamela Hill Nettleton
Domestic Violence In Men's And Women's Magazines: Women Are Guilty Of Choosing The Wrong Men, Men Are Not Guilty Of Hitting Women, Pamela Hill Nettleton
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Men's and women's magazine discourse on domestic violence characterizes women as guilty of choosing the wrong men but does not hold men responsible for hitting women. Using qualitative narrative analysis on 10 leading titles over 10 years, I find an ongoing tolerance for and celebration of domestic violence in men's magazines and an enduring expectation in women's that women bear responsibility for both genders. No magazines discuss patriarchal cultural structures that enable violence against women.
A Cross Cultural Study Of Disability In The United States And Brazil, Emily Kirsten Stortz
A Cross Cultural Study Of Disability In The United States And Brazil, Emily Kirsten Stortz
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Disability is not only a biological issue, it is an inherently social one. People are only as disabled as their society allows them to be. Enhancing our understanding of the social processes affecting the disabled will allow for their increased participation within society. The researcher employed qualitative methods including semi-structured interviews and participant observation to perform case studies at fieldwork sites providing care to the disabled in Chicago, IL, USA and Santarém, Pará, Brazil. The researcher spent two consecutive weeks in each location. The former location is a residential facility for people with developmental disabilities and the latter is a …

The Legitimacy Of Children's And Young Adult Literature As Literature, Timothy Akers
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This article offers the idea that children's and young adult literature is true literature and not merely a sub genre of fiction. There are unique critical approaches that can be applied to children's literature which can be used in the teaching and promotion of such literature.

How Do Students Of Diverse Achievement Levels Benefit From Peer Assessment?, Lan Li
How Do Students Of Diverse Achievement Levels Benefit From Peer Assessment?, Lan Li
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Although the potential of peer assessment activities in promoting student learning and fostering student cognitive development has been widely studied and well documented across the world, it is unclear how peer assessment may benefit students of diverse achievement levels. This study examined this issue via a mixed methodology approach that combined students’ project scores and survey responses with a qualitative interview technique. Findings of this study suggested that peer assessment activities employed in this study had a differentiated impact on students’ learning and perceptions. Students in early learning development stages showed more learning gains than high achieving students in terms …

The Potential For Teaching Quantitative Reasoning Across The Curriculum: Empirical Evidence, Nathan D. Grawe
The Potential For Teaching Quantitative Reasoning Across The Curriculum: Empirical Evidence, Nathan D. Grawe
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Educational theorists have argued that effective instruction in quantitative reasoning (QR) should extend across the curriculum. While a noble goal, it is not immediately evident that this is even possible. To assess the feasibility of this approach to QR instruction, I examine papers written by undergraduates for submission to a sophomore writing portfolio. I distinguish papers in which QR is central to the main thrust of the argument (“centrally relevant”) from those in which QR would strengthen the argument by providing context, enriching description, or presenting background (“peripherally relevant”). I find extensive potential for QR instruction across the curriculum. In …
"The Faults Of A Virginian": John Marshall And Republican Legal Culture, Nathan Thomas Hall
"The Faults Of A Virginian": John Marshall And Republican Legal Culture, Nathan Thomas Hall
LSU Master's Theses
As chief justice of the United States for thirty-five years, John Marshall molded the Supreme Court into a co-equal branch of government. His efforts to fashion a powerful and independent federal court often ran counter to popular sentiment in his home state of Virginia. There, Marshall’s ideological and political opponent, Thomas Jefferson, dominated the political landscape. The adversarial narrative of Marshall and Jefferson’s national political battles is the subject of much scholarship. Rarely considered, however, is the common legal culture from which they both emerged. Understanding the personalities and the decisions that populated Virginia’s legal culture from the American Revolution …

Mediating Multiculturally: Culture And The Ethical Mediator, Carrie Menkel-Meadow, Harold I. Abramson
Mediating Multiculturally: Culture And The Ethical Mediator, Carrie Menkel-Meadow, Harold I. Abramson
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This commentary on mediating multiculturally in a chapter of Mediation Ethics (edited by Ellen Waldman) suggests there are times when mediators should not mediate, because of their own ethical commitments. Commenting on a hypothetical divorce scenario (of Ziba, a 17 year old from her 44 year old husband, with two children aged 3 and 2, where the parties claim to want Shari’a principles to apply), the author (Carrie Menkel-Meadow) suggests that she would not mediate a case which might violate formal laws (American marriage and divorce laws) or infringe on rights that one of the parties might not be fully …
Shotguns,Weddings, And Lunch Counters: Why Cultural Frames Matter To Constitutional Law, Anders Walker
Shotguns,Weddings, And Lunch Counters: Why Cultural Frames Matter To Constitutional Law, Anders Walker
All Faculty Scholarship
Though most constitutional scholars celebrate the civil rights movement, few have asked whether and to what extent the movement relates to current efforts of constitutional reform. Yet, the rise of direct action in the 1960s marked a bold realignment of the collective action, social movement frames of the civil rights struggle, a movement that has direct relevance to current constitutional battles, particularly over marriage and guns. As this Article will show, both the constitutional challenge to gun bans in Illinois and the constitutional challenge to California’s same-sex marriage ban have dealt with issues of frame alignment similar to those confronted …
The Populist Dilemma: Frank Capra's Increasingly Unresolved Populist Films Of The Depression Era, Nathan Johnston
The Populist Dilemma: Frank Capra's Increasingly Unresolved Populist Films Of The Depression Era, Nathan Johnston
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
As the United States endured the depths of the Great Depression, Hollywood's studio system sought to entertain the masses through a standardized process designed to maximize profit. Frank Capra, a director with more freedom than was customary under the classical model, attempted to reassure the American public of the fundamental strenghth of the American system through his populist films of the period. This, however, became more difficult as the financial concerns of the decade were joined by the totalitarian threats emerging in Europe.
The Impact Of Cultural And Environmental Factors On The Experiences Of Survivors Of Gendered Violence In The African American Community, Alana Fields
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
I propose to examine cultural factors mediating silence surrounding “gendered violence†in the African American community, utilizing St. Louis as a case study. I hypothesize that two phenomenon are in play, “Black Male Privilege†in conjunction with “collectivismâ€. I expect to demonstrate that - using an ethnographic methodology - these phenomena work to create and normalize a climate of silence relating to gendered violence. I suggest that these phenomena also work to perpetuate a culture of acceptability about gendered violence and preclude the understanding of the dynamic intersection of race, gender and class which cause insufficient access to culturally sensitive …

Pottery Production, Mortuary Practice, And Social Complexity In The Majiayao Culture, Nw China (Ca. 5300-4000 Bp), Ling-Yu Hung
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The Majiayao Culture: ca. 5300-4000 BP) is famous for its stunning painted pottery vessels. First discovered in the 1920s in northwestern China, these Neolithic painted pottery vessels have become one of the most popular icons used to depict the rich material culture of ancient China. Today, many museums throughout the world hold Majiayao painted pottery vessels in their collections. We know much about the pottery, but research on the associated Majiayao Culture has been limited to cultural histories that emphasize chronology and trait-list classification. These approaches present the Majiayao Culture as static and simplify the social and economic complexity of …
