Translational Neuroscience
Depression, a common neurological condition, is one of the leading causes of disability and suicide worldwide. Standard treatment, targeting monoamine transporters selective for the neurotransmitters serotonin and noradrenaline, is not able to help many patients that are poor responders. This study advances the development of sazetidine-A analogues that interact with α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) as partial agonists and that possess favorable antidepressant profiles. The resulting compounds that are highly selective for the α4β2 subtype of nAChR over α3β4-nAChRs are partial agonists at the α4β2 subtype and have excellent antidepressant behavioral profiles as measured by the mouse forced swim test. …

A Study Of The Orbits Of The Logarithmic Potential For Galaxies, Sree Ram Valluri, Paul Wiegert, John Drozd, Matt Dasilva
Physics and Astronomy Publications
The logarithmic potential is of great interest and relevance in the study of the dynamics of galaxies. Some small corrections to the work of Contopoulos & Seimenis (1990) who used the method of Prendergast (1982) to find periodic orbits and bifurca- tions within such a potential are presented. The solution of the orbital radial equation for the purely radial logarithmic potential is then considered using the p-ellipse (pre- cessing ellipse) method pioneered by Struck (2006). This differential orbital equation is a special case of the generalized Burgers equation. The apsidal angle is also deter- mined, both numerically as well as …

Technological advances in DNA recovery and sequencing have drastically expanded the scope of genetic analyses of ancient specimens to the extent that full genomic investigations are now feasible and are quickly becoming standard1. This trend has important implications for infectious disease research because genomic data from ancient microbes may help to elucidate mechanisms of pathogen evolution and adaptation for emerging and re-emerging infections. Here we report a reconstructed ancient genome of Yersinia pestis at 30-fold average coverage from Black Death victims securely dated to episodes of pestilence-associated mortality in London, England, 1348–1350. Genetic architecture and phylogenetic analysis indicate …

We search for resonant production of tt̄ pairs in 4.8fb-1 integrated luminosity of pp̄ collision data at √s=1.96TeV in the lepton+jets decay channel, where one top quark decays leptonically and the other hadronically. A matrix-element reconstruction technique is used; for each event a probability density function of the tt̄ candidate invariant mass is sampled. These probability density functions are used to construct a likelihood function, whereby the cross section for resonant tt̄ production is estimated, given a hypothetical resonance mass and width. The data indicate no evidence of resonant production of tt̄ pairs. A benchmark model of leptophobic Z′→tt̄ is …
Two Tree Trimmers Die When Struck By Errant Semi Tractor-Trailer, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Two Tree Trimmers Die When Struck By Errant Semi Tractor-Trailer, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Motor Vehicle
One spring morning in 2010, three male tree trimmers set up a work site in a highway intersection at the base of a mountain. As one tree trimmer removed equipment from the truck, two other tree trimmers, 21- and 32-years old, posted signage in the intersection. The two tree trimmers were located on the shoulder of the highway. A semi tractor-trailer was driving down the mountain toward the intersection, when its brakes failed. To avoid hitting vehicles in front of the semi, the driver steered to the left, crossed the intersection, striking both tree trimmers with the semi tractor-trailer. Both …

OBJECTIVES: To investigate potential sources of systematic bias arising in the assessment of doctors' professionalism. DESIGN: Linear regression modelling of cross sectional questionnaire survey data. SETTING: 11 clinical practices in England and Wales. PARTICIPANTS: 1065 non-training grade doctors from various clinical specialties and settings, 17,031 of their colleagues, and 30,333 of their patients. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Two measures of a doctor's professional performance using patient and colleague questionnaires from the United Kingdom's General Medical Council (GMC). We selected potential predictor variables from the characteristics of the doctors and of their patient and colleague assessors. RESULTS: After we adjusted for characteristics …
