Influence Of Particle Size And Specimen Preparation On The Iowa Pore Index, Christopher Paul Davis Jan 2011

Influence Of Particle Size And Specimen Preparation On The Iowa Pore Index, Christopher Paul Davis

Masters Theses

"This study was performed in order to identify a size correction that would allow aggregate of different sizes, other than the standard 1/2-3/4-inch fraction, to be used in the Iowa Pore Index (IPI) test. This size correction would allow for the IPI to be determined for aggregate gradations of material that have a nominal maximum size (NMS) smaller than 3/4-inch. The interest in a size correction for the IPI developed from its use in a Durability Factor (DF) estimation equation. The estimation equation was developed with the use of 19 different DF from Missouri aggregate sources, where eight aggregates had …

Mitophagy And Mitochondrial Morphology In Human Melanoma-Derived Cells Post Exposure To Simulated Sunlight, Luciene M. Zanchetta, Amaya Garcia, Fiona Lyng, James Walsh, James E.J. Murphy

Articles

Purpose: To assess changes in mitochondrial morphology and mitophagy induced by simulated sunlight irradiation (SSI) and how these changes are modulated by mitochondrial activity and energy source. Materials and methods: Human malignant amelanotic melanoma A375 cells were pre-treated with either a mitochondrial activity enhancer, uncoupler or were either melanin or glutamine supplemented/starved for 4 hours pre-exposure to sunlight. A Q-Sun Solar Simulator (Q-Lab, Homestead, FL, USA) was employed to expose cells to simulated sunlight. Confocal microscopy imaging of A375 cells co-loaded with mitochondria and lysosome-specific fluorescent dyes was used to identify these organelles and predict mitophagic events. Results: SSI induces …

Role Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, Placental Growth Factor And Cytokines On Outer Blood Retinal Barrier Breakdown., Sangeetha Sukumaran

Masters

The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effect of the VEGF family of growth factors and
cytokines TNF- α and IL-1β on oBRB function. The human RPE line ARPE-19 was
employed as an in vitro model of the oBRB. Two-Dimensional gel electrophoresis was
employed to study the effect of growth factors on the RPE proteome. The barrier properties of
the oBRB were evaluated by expression of the TJ proteins occludin or Zo-1, or claudins-1, 2,
3 and 4, determined by western blotting analysis. Claudins 2, 3 and 4 were found to be
significantly up-regulated by TNF-α, while interleukin …

The Freedom Of Information Act Trial, Margaret B. Kwoka Jan 2011

The Freedom Of Information Act Trial, Margaret B. Kwoka

American University Law Review

This Article examines the paucity of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) cases that go to trial and courts’ preference for resolving these disputes at the summary judgment stage. Using traditional legal analysis and empirical evidence, this Article explores whether we should expect FOIA cases to go to trial and how the scarcity of FOIA trials compares to the trial rate in civil litigation generally. It concludes that the unusual use of summary judgment in FOIA cases has unjustifiably all but eliminated FOIA trials, which occur in less than 1% of FOIA cases. It further examines how conducting FOIA trials in …

School Counseling Site Supervisor Training: An Exploratory Study, Lorraine Dekruyf, Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson Jan 2011

School Counseling Site Supervisor Training: An Exploratory Study, Lorraine Dekruyf, Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This study explored the supervision training needs of site supervisors of master’s program school counseling interns via the construct of selfefficacy. Using the Site Supervisor Self-Efficacy Survey developed for this study, the authors surveyed school counseling site supervisors in the states of Oregon and Washington (N = 147) regarding their hours of supervision training and their supervisor self-efficacy. Results indicated that 54% of school counseling site supervisors had little or no counseling supervision training. Supervisor self-efficacy appeared to be relatively strong, consistently so for school counseling site supervisors with over 40 hours of supervision training. A partial correlation indicated a …

Foreign Language Housing In The United States: Results Of A Nationwide Survey, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen Jan 2011

Foreign Language Housing In The United States: Results Of A Nationwide Survey, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen

Faculty Publications

FOREIGN language housing (FLH), residences on or near college campuses where speakers of the same foreign language live together, have been a part of United States higher education since 1914 (Jordan). As Gregory Wolf points out, “Ideally, the language house is a hermetically sealed linguistic environment where residents agree to speak the target language” and are able to experience “everyday vernacular that is difficult for instructors to replicate in the classroom” (81). Alice Schlimbach and Emil L. Jordan note, FLH “cannot possibly be as advantageous as an extended student-tour to Germany; but it does form a second-best opportunity to come …

Association Of Retinoic Acid Receptor Genes With Meningomyelocele, Phong X Tran, Kit Sing Au, Alanna C Morrison, Jack M Fletcher, Kathryn K Ostermaier, Gayle H Tyerman, Hope Northrup Jan 2011

Association Of Retinoic Acid Receptor Genes With Meningomyelocele, Phong X Tran, Kit Sing Au, Alanna C Morrison, Jack M Fletcher, Kathryn K Ostermaier, Gayle H Tyerman, Hope Northrup

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) occur in as many as 0.5-2 per 1000 live births in the United States. One of the most common and severe neural tube defects is meningomyelocele (MM) resulting from failed closure of the caudal end of the neural tube. MM has been induced by retinoic acid teratogenicity in rodent models. We hypothesized that genetic variants influencing retinoic acid (RA) induction via retinoic acid receptors (RARs) may be associated with risk for MM.

METHODS: We analyzed 47 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that span across the three retinoic acid receptor genes using the SNPlex genotyping platform. Our …

Hired Guns And Moral Torpedoes: Balancing The Competing Moral Duties Of The Public Relations Professional, Kati Tusinski Berg, Kevin Gibson Jan 2011

Hired Guns And Moral Torpedoes: Balancing The Competing Moral Duties Of The Public Relations Professional, Kati Tusinski Berg, Kevin Gibson

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Public relations helps an organisation and its publics adapt mutually to each other. However, this does not mean that the profession is value neutral or anything goes. There will be cases where professionals have to make discretionary ethical decisions and negotiate their roles and responsibilities, especially when faced with novel or difficult issues. In this conceptual paper, we describe how the notion of professional role morality not only shapes the individual struggles that practitioners endure but also highlights the organisational structures that foster or shun ethics in the decision-making process. Thus we provide a means of assessing professional action that …

Purgatory's Place In The South: A Black Woman's Journey To The Promised Land, Consuela Jean Ward Jan 2011

Purgatory's Place In The South: A Black Woman's Journey To The Promised Land, Consuela Jean Ward

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Using critical race theory (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Ladson-Billings, 2003; Stovall, 2005), Black feminist thought (Collins, 2000), and identity theory of oppression (Hardiman & Jackson, 1997) as the theoretical framework and autobiographical narrative inquiry (He, 2003; Moody,1968; Angleou, 1969; Hurston, 1965; hooks,1996; Jacobs, 1861) as the methodology, I explored the formal and informal educational experiences I received and reciprocated in Black church ideology and white schools and how they shaped my identity and lived experience as a Black woman in the South. I chronicled paradigm shifts in my thinking along my journey from Black Christian fundamentalism and poverty to a …

Overcoming The Odds: The Success Story Of An African American Gifted Male Student, Jhondra Anderson Barnes

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to identify how and why some African American students included in gifted programs maintain academic and social success. Data from semi-structured interview responses, behavioral checklists, and personality traits rating scales were coded and themed as a means to tell Elijah's story. Currently a 20 year old African American college student, Elijah was initially overlooked by his elementary school teachers for a potential gifted placement and subsequently referred himself. Participants of this study include Elijah and eleven of his former teachers, administrators, coaches, and mentors. Emerging themes from the research as sources of qualities to …

The Relationships Between Optimism And Pessimism And Burnout In Youth Soccer Players, Brandy A. Rentz Jan 2011

The Relationships Between Optimism And Pessimism And Burnout In Youth Soccer Players, Brandy A. Rentz

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Sport related burnout has become a concern for many athletes, coaches, and sport psychologists. Although burnout in sport is receiving more attention, the research still remains relatively limited (Capel, 1986; Dale & Weinberg, 1990; Fender, 1989; Gould, Udry, Tuffey, & Loehr, 1996). Dale and Weinberg (1990) indicated a need for future research concerning the identification of characteristics that may predispose athletes to burnout. No past research was found that investigated the relationship between optimism/pessimism and sport burnout. The primary purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationships between optimism and pessimism with burnout. A secondary purpose was to determine …

Thermal-Aware Cell And Through-Silicon-Via Co-Placement For 3d Ics, Jason Cong, Guojie Luo, Yiyu Shi Jan 2011

Thermal-Aware Cell And Through-Silicon-Via Co-Placement For 3d Ics, Jason Cong, Guojie Luo, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Existing thermal-aware 3D placement methods assume that the temperature of 3D ICs can be optimized by properly distributing the power dissipations and ignoring the heat conductivity of though-silicon-vias (TSVs). However, our study indicates that this is not exactly correct. While considering the thermal effect of TSVs during placement appears to be quite complicated, we are able to prove that when the TSV area in each bin is proportional to the lumped power consumption in that bin, together with the bins in all the tiers directly above it, the peak temperature is minimized. based on this criterion, we implement a thermal-aware …
