Ischemia–Reperfusion Impairs Blood–Brain Barrier Function And Alters Tight Junction Protein Expression In The Ovine Fetus, X. Chen, S. W. Threlkeld, E. E. Cummings, I. Juan, O. Makeyev, W. G. Besio, J. Gaitanis, W. A. Banks, G. B. Sadowska, B. S. Stonestreet

Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The blood–brain barrier is a restrictive interface between the brain parenchyma and the intravascular compartment. Tight junctions contribute to the integrity of the blood–brain barrier. Hypoxic–ischemic damage to the blood–brain barrier could be an important component of fetal brain injury. We hypothesized that increases in blood–brain barrier permeability after ischemia depend upon the duration of reperfusion and that decreases in tight junction proteins are associated with the ischemia-related impairment in blood–brain barrier function in the fetus. Blood–brain barrier function was quantified with the blood-to-brain transfer constant (Ki) and tight junction proteins by Western immunoblot in fetal sheep …

Effects Of Response Elaboration Training On Sentence Production Of Persons With Chronic Agrammatic Aphasia, Ryan S. Husak Dec 2011

Effects Of Response Elaboration Training On Sentence Production Of Persons With Chronic Agrammatic Aphasia, Ryan S. Husak

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Purpose: Response Elaboration Training (RET) is a treatment program for increasing the amount of information contained in the speech of individuals with aphasia. This study employed a sentence production task (SPT) to examine whether RET will (1) generalize to a task not worked on in treatment and (2) affect syntactic performance.

Methods and Procedures: Three adults with chronic non-fluent Broca’s aphasia received RET in this prospective, repeated case study. The dependent variable was a SPT requiring the participant to put a verb in a sentence. Changes in the syntactic performance of the participant’s sentence productions were classified across …

Foot Pain Related Factors For Nursing Aides At Long-Term Care Institutions: A Preliminary Study, Chien-Hua Huang, Won-Tin Chang, Chun Pei, Chih-Chin Hsieh, Shu-Chuan Wu Dec 2011

Foot Pain Related Factors For Nursing Aides At Long-Term Care Institutions: A Preliminary Study, Chien-Hua Huang, Won-Tin Chang, Chun Pei, Chih-Chin Hsieh, Shu-Chuan Wu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Nursing aides at long-term care institutions need to stand and walk all day. As a result, the average burden of lower limbs for nursing aides is greater than nurses was. Feet have to bear the bodies weight as well as for support, shock absorption, and wear and tear from walking. This study investigated major factors of foot pain as caused by functional activities or the abnormal foot structures from prolonged standing and walking due to work. The participants were nursing aides at a special education school in central Taiwan. The first questionnaire gathered foot pain history for the previous three …

Bilateral Cataract Caused By High-Voltage Electrical Injury: A Casereport, Chin-Man Wang, Jui-Yung Yang, Pei-Ying Hsueh, Yu-Cheng Pei, Cheng-Fung Tsai, Katie P. Wu Dec 2011

Bilateral Cataract Caused By High-Voltage Electrical Injury: A Casereport, Chin-Man Wang, Jui-Yung Yang, Pei-Ying Hsueh, Yu-Cheng Pei, Cheng-Fung Tsai, Katie P. Wu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Few victims can survive high-voltage electric burns in which the electricity passes through the scalp. Notably, 0.7% to 8.0% of these survivors will progressively develop cataracts caused by the electric injury. This report presents a unique case manifested with rapid visual deterioration as a result of posterior subcapsular cataract. A 36-year-old male was incidentally injured by an electric burn of 11,000 volts during work. Immediately following the injury, his vision remained sufficient in daily activities. Unfortunately, progressive non-painful visual loss developed in his right eye within a month during rehabilitation training and then later in the left eye. Ophthalmologist confirmed …

Ulnar, Median, And Radial Neuropathies After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: A Casereport, Wang-Lin Su, Chia-Yu Hsu Dec 2011

Ulnar, Median, And Radial Neuropathies After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: A Casereport, Wang-Lin Su, Chia-Yu Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Peripheral neuropathies after cardiac surgery are usually attributed to manipulation during the surgical procedure itself. A 54-year-old man developed left ulnar, median, and radial neuropathies after off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery. An electrodiagnostic study indicated a lesion located in the distal part of the upper arm. In view of the anatomy, this patient most likely developed neuropathy associated with intraoperative blood pressure monitoring. Iatrogenic peripheral neuropathy after cardiac surgery should be carefully assessed to find the exact cause.

Time Trends In Expenditures For Rural Veterans' Healthcare, Alan N. West, Todd A. Mackenzie Dec 2011

Time Trends In Expenditures For Rural Veterans' Healthcare, Alan N. West, Todd A. Mackenzie

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

We studied rural-urban differences in medical spending trends over eleven years for VA as well as non-VA care received by male veterans who used any VA services, and compared those trends to trends for other healthcare-using men. Using inflation-adjusted annual medical expenditures for non-veterans, VA users, and other veterans who participated in Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys from 1996 through 2006, we examined trends in spending on inpatient, hospital-based outpatient, office-based, pharmacy, and other care, by major payers (self/family, private insurance, Medicare, other sources, and VA), to assess changes in expenditures for the care of rural veterans, younger or older than …

“Reckoning” With America’S Past: Robert Penn Warren’S Later Poetry, Joan Romano Shifflett Dec 2011

“Reckoning” With America’S Past: Robert Penn Warren’S Later Poetry, Joan Romano Shifflett

Robert Penn Warren Studies

Robert Penn Warren’s later poetry, specifically Rumor Verified and Altitudes and Extensions, deserves closer critical attention to the function served by the American past. Whether it is facing the bloody reality of westward expansion or acknowledging the alienation and dehumanization that results from the Industrial Revolution, Warren’s poems suggest a method of self-reflection that yields a fuller sense of American identity and, consequently, an awareness and knowledge of how to live in this modern world. A close study of the poetic techniques in “Going West” serves as a model for how Warren uses historical backdrops to employ his underlying philosophy …

Acute Paraplegia After Spinal Manipulation: A Casereport, Kao-Chih Chen, Yao-Jen Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This is a casereport about a 53-year-old female patient with a history of chronic back pain, suffered from complete paraplegia shortly after spinal manipulation. CT and MRI images consistently showed ossification of the ligamenta flava in conjunction with bilateral facet joints hypertrophy at the T10-11, T11-12 and L1-2 levels. Spinal cord injury with T12 paraplegia ASIA-A was thus diagnosed. Posterior laminectomy at the T10, T11, L1 and L2 levels and interbody fusion from T10 to L2 spines for fixation were performed. After rehabilitation, the patient regained some activities of daily living despite complete paraplegia. To raise public awareness, our report …

Ann Application In Maritime Industry : Baltic Dry Index Forecasting & Optimization Of The Number Of Container Cranes, Han Cui Dec 2011

Ann Application In Maritime Industry : Baltic Dry Index Forecasting & Optimization Of The Number Of Container Cranes, Han Cui

World Maritime University Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of dry bulk freight index forecasting and port planning, both based on Artificial Neural network application. First the dry bulk market is reviewed, and the reason for the high fluctuation of freight rates through the demand-supply mechanism is examined. Due to the volatile BDI, the traditional linear regression forecasting method cannot guarantee the performance of forecasting, but ANN overcomes this difficulty and gives better performance especially in a short time. Besides, in order to improve the performance of ANN further, wavelet is introduced to pre-process the BDI data. But when the noise (high frequency parts) …

Pengaruh Modal Intelektual Dan Pengungkapan Modal Intelektual Pada Nilai Perusahaan Yang Melakukan Initial Public Offering, Wahyu Widarjo

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of intellectual capital performance and intellectual capital disclosure on the value of the firm after an initial public offering (IPO). The Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAICTM) method is used to measure of intellectual capital. Intellectual capital disclosure in this research is measure with Zingh and Zahn (2008) index, and value firm is determined by market value of the firm. The result of the analysis fails to support the first hypothesis that intellectual capital is affected to firm’s values. The result probably is an indication that market is incapable to assess …

Barriers To Women's Access To Justice In Haiti, Meena Jagannath Dec 2011

Barriers To Women's Access To Justice In Haiti, Meena Jagannath

City University of New York Law Review

While gender-based violence is not a new phenomenon in Haiti, the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 earthquake further exposed the vulnerability of Haitian women and girls to gender-based violence and the limited possibilities for women to evince a judicial response to gender-specific violations of the law. Drawing from the experiences of Haitian lawyers and women’s rights advocates, this paper will examine women’s barriers to accessing justice in Haiti by drawing on actual examples of gender-based violence at each step of the investigatory process under the Haitian justice system. It will provide, by way of background, an overview of the …

An Irrational Oversight: Applying The Plra's Fee Restrictions To Collateral Prisoner Litigation, Walker Newell Dec 2011

An Irrational Oversight: Applying The Plra's Fee Restrictions To Collateral Prisoner Litigation, Walker Newell

City University of New York Law Review

The Federal Prison Litigation Reform Act precludes prisoners from filing lawsuits in forma pauperis and imposes significant limitations on the recovery of attorney’s fees. Many states have followed the lead of Congress by prohibiting their courts from waiving filing fees in prisoner cases. The federal fee provisions have withstood a barrage of constitutional challenges, with courts uniformly holding that the provisions are rationally related to a legitimate government interest in deterring frivolous inmate litigation. Many courts, however, apply these fee restrictions in a manner that cannot be justified by the analysis generally supporting the constitutionality of the provisions. In both …

The Spatial Turn In Literary Historiography, Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza Dec 2011

The Spatial Turn In Literary Historiography, Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Spatial Turn in Literary Historiography," Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza examines the spatialization of literary history in recent years. He evaluates the resurgence of interest in literary geography and argues that the geographic dimension is not the only aspect of the predominant spatiality in new literary histories. Further, Cabo Aseguinolaza postulates that although the emphasis on spatiality marks many current literary histories, all literary histories imply spatial elements of different character and scope and that these options constitute an essential part of the performative capacity of history writing. In particular, Cabo Aseguinolaza discusses categories proposed by Henri Lefebvre …

Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry And The Iberian Interliterary System, Santiago Gutiérrez García Dec 2011

Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry And The Iberian Interliterary System, Santiago Gutiérrez García

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry and the Iberian Interliterary System" Santiago Gutiérrez García explores the notion that the possibility of carrying out a comparative study of Iberian literatures is determined by its interliterary system. Gutiérrez García postulates that the said interliterary system comprises a series of peripheral literatures which seek their self-affirmation through opposition to the hegemonic center, namely Castilian literature. He uses the example of Galician Portuguese medieval poetry and illustrates the problematic nature of his approach elaborating that despite the fact that this medieval poetic tradition is shared by both Galician and Portuguese literatures, as literary …

Comics And The Graphic Novel In Spain And Iberian Galicia, Antonio J. Gil González

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Comics and the Graphic Novel in Spain and Iberian Galicia," Antonio J. Gil González develops a comparative and interart analysis of graphic novels by examining the evolution of the genre on the Spanish peninsula in general and in Galicia in particular. Gil González builds his analysis on Roman Ingarden's concept of literature as not only traditional fiction, but also theater and cinema. Gil González presents his argumentation by identifying the peculiarities of the comic as a medium, starting with its historical beginnings, and discussing its principal formats and generic and thematic variants. Further, he discusses the principal …

Narration And Identity In Iberian Galician Literature, Dolores Vilavedra Dec 2011

Narration And Identity In Iberian Galician Literature, Dolores Vilavedra

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Narration and Identity in Iberian Galician Literature" Dolores Vilavedra discusses the contribution made by Galician narratives to the process of codifying models of a supposedly Galician identity. She shows how the development of literary narration has not always been gradual and that it has undergone stages of stagnation. Further, Vilavedra discusses how the narrative genre itself has gradually altered the prime objectives of its own development according to the apparent need to impose certain paradigms. She proposes that this process is closely linked, on the one hand to the process of language standardization and, on the other, …
