Preserving Euskera In A Globalized World: Determining The Long-Term Efficacy Of Multilingual Schools In The Basque Country, Spain, Olivia Destrades Mendoza

Masters Theses

The Basque Country, Spain is a linguistically unique region where the minority indigenous language, Euskera, competes alongside the dominant state language, Castilian, and a lingua franca, English, for prestige and status. Following a history of cultural and linguistic repression and marginalization, the Basque community has, in the past 30 years, begun to reintroduce Euskera into new, multilingual school systems in order to teach, preserve and maintain their heritage language, while simultaneously acquiring English as an important language for global communication. This multimethod, qualitative study takes data from 36 survey respondents and five interview participants from the Basque Country, and triangulates …

A Speculative Approach To Parallelization In Particle Swarm Optimization, Matthew Gardner, Andrew Mcnabb, Kevin Seppi Dec 2011

A Speculative Approach To Parallelization In Particle Swarm Optimization, Matthew Gardner, Andrew Mcnabb, Kevin Seppi

Faculty Publications

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has previously been parallelized primarily by distributing the computation corresponding to particles across multiple processors. In these approaches, the only benefit of additional processors is an increased swarm size. However, in many cases this is not efficient when scaled to very large swarm sizes (on very large clusters). Current methods cannot answer well the question: “How can 1000 processors be fully utilized when 50 or 100 particles is the most efficient swarm size?” In this paper we attempt to answer that question with a speculative approach to the parallelization of PSO that we refer to as …

Characterizing The Sediment Provenance Of East Antarctica's Weak Underbelly: The Aurora And Wilkes Sub-Glacial Basins, Elizabeth L. Pierce, Trevor Williams, Tina Van De Flierdt, Sidney R. Hemming, Steven L. Goldstein, Stefanie A. Brachfeld

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

[1] The Wilkes and Aurora basins are large, low-lying sub-glacial basins that may cause areas of weakness in the overlying East Antarctic ice sheet. Previous work based on ice-rafted debris (IRD) provenance analyses found evidence for massive iceberg discharges from these areas during the late Miocene and Pliocene. Here we characterize the sediments shed from the inferred areas of weakness along this margin (94°E to 165°E) by measuring40Ar/39Ar ages of 292 individual detrital hornblende grains from eight marine sediment core locations off East Antarctica and Nd isotopic compositions of the bulk fine fraction from the same sediments. We further expand …

Toxicity Profiling Of Engineered Nanomaterials Via Multivariate Dose Response Surface Modeling, Trina Patel, Donatello Telesca, Saji George, Andre Nel Dec 2011

Toxicity Profiling Of Engineered Nanomaterials Via Multivariate Dose Response Surface Modeling, Trina Patel, Donatello Telesca, Saji George, Andre Nel

COBRA Preprint Series

New generation in-vitro high throughput screening (HTS) assays for the assessment of engineered nanomaterials provide an opportunity to learn how these particles interact at the cellular level, particularly in relation to injury pathways. These types of assays are often characterized by small sample sizes, high measurement error and high dimensionality as multiple cytotoxicity outcomes are measured across an array of doses and durations of exposure. In this article we propose a probability model for toxicity profiling of engineered nanomaterials. A hierarchical framework is used to account for the multivariate nature of the data by modeling dependence between outcomes and thereby …

Effects Of Tuition Price, Grant Aid, And Institutional Revenue On Low-Income Student Enrollment, Nathan E. Lassila Dec 2011

Effects Of Tuition Price, Grant Aid, And Institutional Revenue On Low-Income Student Enrollment, Nathan E. Lassila

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Evidence of greater economic stratification brings challenges to higher education’s enrollment of low-income students. With a growing proportion of potential college students coming from low income households, increasing their post-secondary participation rate is vital in developing and growing the pool of educated individuals for the labor force as educated baby boomers retire. Using a combination of IPEDS, NPSAS:08, U.S. Census, and ACT data, this study analyzes three empirical models for public, private not-for-profit, and all institutions (both public and private not-for-profit institutions combined). Findings support previous scholarship in that price and grant aid affect student enrollment. Adding to the research …

American Environmentalism And The City: An Ecosystem Services Perspective, Dorothy C. Ibes Dec 2011

American Environmentalism And The City: An Ecosystem Services Perspective, Dorothy C. Ibes

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This study traces the evolution of eight influential American environmental organizations and their relationship with, and conceptualizations of, ‘the city’ and ‘nature.’ Guided by the ecosystem services framework, the organizations’ urban-based initiatives were analyzed to determine what types of ecosystem services they emphasized and what the implications are for cities and environmental health. Results from historical, content, and interview analyses reveal the potential of the ecosystem services framework to unite the interests and efforts of multiple stakeholders, including urbanists, ecologists, economists, and environmentalists in a way that enhances both urban quality of life and conservation efforts overall.

Meteoric Diagenesis Of Plio-Pleistocene Reef Terraces In The Southern Dominican Republic, Yulaika Hernawati Dec 2011

Meteoric Diagenesis Of Plio-Pleistocene Reef Terraces In The Southern Dominican Republic, Yulaika Hernawati

Open Access Theses

Four prograding reef terraces (6, 15, 30, and 50 m) have been repetitively exposed to marine and freshwater alteration during the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods. Prolonged freshwater alterations have resulted in many diagenetic overprints that obscure early diagenetic products. This study investigates the sequence of the diagenetic processes and products in the terrace deposits using five long cores and 14 short cores taken from these different reef terraces. The lithologic changes in the cores were documented for reconstruction of the original depositional frameworks prior to embarking on a diagenetic study. Both textural and geochemical changes were examined within all four …

Development And Validation Of A Music-Based Attention Assessment For Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury, Eunju Jeong Dec 2011

Development And Validation Of A Music-Based Attention Assessment For Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury, Eunju Jeong

Open Access Dissertations

Impairments in attention are commonly seen in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). While attention assessment measurements have been developed rigorously and utilized frequently in cognitive neurorehabilitation, there is a paucity of auditory attention assessment instruments that are ecologically valid and that assess different subtypes of attention. Yet, deficits in auditory attention can severely limit everyday functioning, negatively impact work and personal relationships and compromise personal safety. The purpose of this study was to develop and to investigate the psychometric properties of a Music-based Attention Assessment (MAA) instrument. The MAA is a multiple choice, melodic contour identification test, designed to …

Objecting Objectification: Finding The Links Between Self-Objectification, Views On Harassment, And Agreement With Traditional Sex Roles, Amy M. Bishop

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between self-objectification levels, opinions on the impact of non-violent stranger sexual harassment on a personal and societal level, and agreement with traditional gender roles in college women. College women at Western Kentucky University were surveyed using the Objectified Body Consciousness Scale, the Social Roles Questionnaire, and original scales to measure views of street harassment. The hypotheses that viewing stranger harassment as both individually direct and complimentary would be positively correlated with self- objectification, and viewing it as innocuous in society were supported with correlation coefficients of r(103) = .211, p …
