Explaining Investment Policies In Microstates: The Case Of The Fiji Islands, Sudarsan Kant Dec 2011

Explaining Investment Policies In Microstates: The Case Of The Fiji Islands, Sudarsan Kant

Dissertations

Prevailing theories have failed to take into account the development of policy and institutions in microstates that are engineered to attract investments in areas of comparative advantage as these small islands confront the challenges of globalization and instead have emphasized migration, remittances and foreign aid (MIRAB) as an explanation for the survival of microstates in the global economy. This dissertation challenges the MIRAB model as an adequate explanation of investment strategy in microstates and argues that comparative advantage is a better theory to explain policy behavior of microstates. These small economies can take advantage of their exotic locations and natural …

Online Doctoral Student Research And Writing Self-Efficacy In A Publishing Internship, Lee M. Stadtlander, Amy Sickel, Daniel Salter Dec 2011

Online Doctoral Student Research And Writing Self-Efficacy In A Publishing Internship, Lee M. Stadtlander, Amy Sickel, Daniel Salter

Higher Learning Research Communications

The present project purposed to develop a publishing internship program and evaluate its effect on doctoral student participants. A key assumption was that direct experience with the publishing process as a doctoral student would help build some of the necessary skills and self-efficacy to be successful as authors/scholars in the future. Because there has not been previous research in this area, the present study addresses this gap. Two different assessments, a writing knowledge and self-efficacy inventory and a research self-efficacy inventory, were used in a pre–posttest design to evaluate the impact of participation in the 6-month internship program on 22 …

Financial-Linkages And Cost Efficiency: Lessons From Tanzanian Microfinance Cooperatives, Esther Ishengoma Dec 2011

Financial-Linkages And Cost Efficiency: Lessons From Tanzanian Microfinance Cooperatives, Esther Ishengoma

Business Management Review

This paper attempts to examine the effect of financial linkages on cost margin and efficiency of microfinance cooperatives (MCs) in Tanzania. Based on data from six focus group discussions comprising 112 managers from 102 MCs, the paper starts by exploring the nature of linkages between commercial banks and MCs. It further applies quantitative analyses: the stochastic frontier and semi-logarithm regression models to examine the effect financial linkages on cost efficiency and cost margin. The paper reveals that financial linkages increase cost margin and inefficiency of MCs. It therefore enlightens MCs ' stakeholders on the possible explanations of the positive effects …

Factors Influencing The Effectiveness Of Maintenance Of Construction Equipment, S. M. Mongomongo, Emmanuel A. M. Mjema

Business Management Review

The objective of this study was to establish the factors influencing the effectiveness of maintenance of Construction Equipment (CE). The methodology used included literature review, observation, interviews, and questionnaire. The established factors influencing the effectiveness of maintenance of CE include: wrong perception of users of the effect of maintenance on productivity and on effectiveness of the machine; failure of the owners and users to comprehend the importance of outsourcing maintenance, which denies the companies the opportunity of using specialised expertise of OEM personnel trained in maintenance given that the companies have maintenance personnel with a low level of skills. Therefore …

The East African Community (Eac) And Its Influence On Tanzania's Manufactured Exports Intensity And Competitiveness, Deusdedit Rwehumbiza

Business Management Review

This paper examines the relationship between the revived EAC and both export intensity and competitiveness of Tanzania ' s manufactured exports in the East African region. The study uses simple descriptive statistics, which is later supplemented with export intensity and export competitiveness models (also termed as indices) to determine the dynamics and competitiveness of Tanzania ' s intra-EAC manufactured exports. Manufactured export intensity is above 100 whereas export competitiveness is found to have increased but below unit since the establishment of the current EAC. Concerted efforts should be taken within both, Tanzania and the EAC as a whole so as …

Increasing The Competitive Strengths Of Tanzanian Tourism Firms-The Strategic Role Of Information Technology, Tumsifu Elly, Hakan Boter

Business Management Review

This study investigates the relationship between information technology (IT) and firms ' competitive advantage. A conceptual model hypothesizing the relationship between human and IT resources and their influence on firms ' capabilities and competitive advantage is conceived. Market and resource-based views are applied to investigate what differentiates firms ' performance as they deploy IT. Confirmatory factor analysis is used to validate the model and test the hypothesized relationships using 217 cases of SMTEs in Tanzania. The findings demonstrate that IT value depends on both IT and human resources. Industry-specific skills, knowledge and experience and managements ' skills, knowledge and experience …

Gm Issues Investigated, Lisa M. Roth Dec 2011

Gm Issues Investigated, Lisa M. Roth

Research Journalism

It was important to investigate and tell this story as GM issues receive limited exposure in the news media, though the Steve Marsh case has gone some way towards remedying this. Marsh lost his organic farming licence in 2010 because of contamination from his neighbour’s crop. Primarily this investigation served to highlight the lack of hard data about whether GM and non-GM crops can coexist, in a way that had not previously been published.

It was also important to investigate Monsanto’s intentions regarding potential future acquisition of a larger share of the WA Government wheat-breeding company InterGrain, as this could …

Community Outreach English: Marketing A Community Esl Program, Carrie Lane Drake

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this MA TESOL project was to develop promotional products for BYU's Community Outreach English (CORE) program. The purpose of these products is to create greater community awareness of the program and the resources it provides to learners. It is also hoped that the promotional products will aid in the process of recruiting students for the program from one year to the next. While the essential elements of the marketing mix (product, place, promotion, and price) were reviewed, an emphasis for this project was placed on promotion, which translated into developing materials for this purpose. Promotional materials that …

C-Met Initiates Epithelial Scattering Through Transient Calcium Influxes And Nfat-Dependent Gene Transcription, Peter R. Langford Dec 2011

C-Met Initiates Epithelial Scattering Through Transient Calcium Influxes And Nfat-Dependent Gene Transcription, Peter R. Langford

Theses and Dissertations

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) signaling drives epithelial cells to scatter by breaking cell-cell adhesions and migrating as solitary cells, a process that parallels epithelial-mesenchymal transition. HGF binds and activates the c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase, but downstream signaling required for scattering remains poorly defined. This study addresses this shortcoming in a number of ways.A high-throughput in vitro drug screen was employed to identify proteins necessary in this HGF-induced signaling. Cells were tested for reactivity to HGF stimulation in a Boyden chamber assay. This tactic yielded several small molecules that block HGF-induced scattering, including a calcium channel blocker. Patch clamping was used …

Third-Party Forgiveness In Ambivalent And Supportive Relationships, Daniel Stephen Allen Dec 2011

Third-Party Forgiveness In Ambivalent And Supportive Relationships, Daniel Stephen Allen

Theses and Dissertations

A recent trend in the study of forgiveness is to look at forgiveness outside of traditional victim-perpetrator dyads. One way of going beyond these dyads is to look at third-party forgiveness. A recent advance in the study of relationship valence is to look at the amount of positivity and negativity in a relationship as on independent scales rather than on two ends of the same spectrum. This allows for categorization of relationships that are high in both positivity and negativity—ambivalent relationships. This study attempts to combine these two recent advances. I hypothesized that participants would have more difficulty forgiving offenders …

The Tornado Tree: Drawing On Stories And Storybooks, Toni A. Wood Dec 2011

The Tornado Tree: Drawing On Stories And Storybooks, Toni A. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Storytelling has been used by many cultures to record events, research genealogy, and to teach moral lessons. Some cultures passed on their histories and important events through oral narration, papyrus, or cathedral stained glass windows. More modern cultures write personal histories, and use modern technology to communicate with each other. This study is an arts based project based on writing a storybook. It is an exploration of why storytelling is important from a cultural point of view using my experiences to write a storybook based on a true event from my family history.

Examining Implementation Processes Of Positive Behavior Support, Julia Helzer Rollins Dec 2011

Examining Implementation Processes Of Positive Behavior Support, Julia Helzer Rollins

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a summary of themes found in the meeting notes of school teams implementing school-wide Positive Behavior Support. Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a systems change process of reorganizing a school's discipline structure to put in place a positive, teaching and reinforcing focus for the improvement of student behavior (Sugai & Horner, 2006). In recent years, education researchers have established that school-wide PBS is an effective way to deliver research- based interventions to improve student behavior (Colvin & Kameenui, 1993, Gottfredson, Gottfredson, & Hybl 1993; Taylor-Green & Kartub, 2000). This study focused on the implementation process in order …

A Comparative Case Study: Investigation Of A Certified Elementary Art Specialist Teaching Elementary Art Vs. A Non-Art Certified Teacher Teaching Elementary Art, Jordan Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Most colleges and universities offer a general course in elementary art education to provide instruction to the elementary generalist to enable that student to later provide art instruction to students at the elementary level. This course is commonly referred to as the two-credit course in elementary art education throughout this thesis. This thesis is a case study investigation of a certified elementary art specialist and a non-art certified teacher teaching elementary art in the Subject School District in Utah. It asks and gathers data on three main questions. How is art education valuable for elementary students? What is a quality …
