Habitat Characteristics Affecting Site Occupation In Wintering Henslow’S Sparrows At Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge, Mary E. Nicholson
Habitat Characteristics Affecting Site Occupation In Wintering Henslow’S Sparrows At Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge, Mary E. Nicholson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Henslow’s sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii) winters in recently burned sites in pine savannas of the Southeastern United States. Previous studies have suggested that factors such as seed abundance and litter depth are important to wintering Henslow’s sparrows. My study asked how habitat variables including vegetation structure, seed abundance, and arthropod abundance predict Henslow’s sparrow site occupancy at Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge. In this study, Henslow’s sparrow more often occupied sites burned one growing season earlier than sites burned two growing seasons earlier, and did not occupy sites burned three or more growing seasons earlier. Data indicated that mass …

Promoting Unity Through Propaganda: How The British Government Utilized Posters During The Second World War, Elizabeth Tate Goins
Promoting Unity Through Propaganda: How The British Government Utilized Posters During The Second World War, Elizabeth Tate Goins
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Comprised of four separate countries, the United Kingdom is a state unlike any other. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have distinct identities, which has been a cause for discord throughout British history. However, during the Second World War the Ministry of Information, under the guidance of the Conservative government and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, launched a poster-based propaganda campaign aimed towards unifying the UK under a common national self-identity. By emphasizing shared qualities such as resilience, pragmatism, humor, patriotism and even the concept of unity itself, the Ministry of Information fostered a sense of national self-identity with the …
The Vulnerability Assessment And Penetration Testing Of Two Networks, Steven L. Simpson
The Vulnerability Assessment And Penetration Testing Of Two Networks, Steven L. Simpson
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Vulnerability assessments and penetration testing are two approaches available for use by internet security practitioners to determine the security posture of information networks. By assessing network vulnerabilities and attempting to exploit found vulnerabilities through penetration testing security professionals are able to evaluate the effectiveness of their network defenses by identifying defense weaknesses, affirming the defense mechanisms in place, or some combination of the two. This project is a discussion of the methods and tools used during the vulnerability assessment and penetration testing, and the respective test results of two varied and unique networks. The assessment and testing of the first …

Nonparametric Copula Density Estimation In Sensor Networks, Leming Qu, Hao Chen, Yicheng Tu
Nonparametric Copula Density Estimation In Sensor Networks, Leming Qu, Hao Chen, Yicheng Tu
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Statistical and machine learning is a fundamental task in sensor networks. Real world data almost always exhibit dependence among different features. Copulas are full measures of statistical dependence among random variables. Estimating the underlying copula density function from distributed data is an important aspect of statistical learning in sensor networks. With limited communication capacities or privacy concerns, centralization of the data is often impossible. By only collecting the ranks of the data observed by different sensors, we estimate and evaluate the copula density on an equally spaced grid after binning the standardized ranks at the fusion center. Without assuming any …
The Effect Frequent Organizational Restructure Has On Employee Perceptions, Lisa Sabasteanski
The Effect Frequent Organizational Restructure Has On Employee Perceptions, Lisa Sabasteanski
Theses and Graduate Projects
This qualitative study investigates the effect frequent organizational restructure has on employee perceptions. Frequent is defined as two or more restructures in less than eighteen months. For this study, I evaluated findings from ten employees who worked in various industries throughout the Midwest who had experienced at least two restructures in less than eighteen months. Interviews were conducted with individuals to understand their perspective of organizational restructures they've participated in at their company. Findings from this study suggested when leaders clearly articulate the rationale for the organizational restructure and when they are honest and transparent about what is going on …

Rn Transition To Practice Program In The Primary Care And School Settings: Development, Implementation, And Evaluation, Maria-Idalia O. Lens
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
New graduate registered nurses (RN) are facing a difficult time finding jobs since the economy of the United States has declined. Since then the California Institute of Nursing and Health Care, along with funding from the Betty Moore Foundation, have developed RN transition programs. These programs were developed to increase skills, confidence, and experience among new RN graduates to promote their transition into the nursing workforce. The programs also were designed to retain newly licensed nurses in the nursing profession while engaging competencies that could be transferred to both acute and outpatient care settings. In addition, the programs are intended …

Reducing Data Loss And Saving Money By Acquiring Data Loss Prevention Software, Patarika Tipwong
Technical Reports
Choosing and implementing the right security software tools can protect a company’s assets. In particular, data breaches might not happen if a company is aware of its information flow and has the proper tool to protect it. This thesis paper will explain why and how acquiring data loss prevention (DLP) software will help a company to reduce data loss, mitigate the loss impact and save money. Facts and examples are provided to support and illustrate the statement above.
Towards A Better Use: The Utah Shakespearean Festival, Teaching Artists, And Outreach Programs, Karen Marie Kidd
Towards A Better Use: The Utah Shakespearean Festival, Teaching Artists, And Outreach Programs, Karen Marie Kidd
Theses and Dissertations
Teaching Artists are an important component of the Utah Shakespearean Festival's Education Department's outreach touring program that visits K-12 schools throughout Utah each year. However, the Education Department could be using Teaching Artists in different and better ways to help K-12 teachers infuse theatre into their curriculum. This work looks carefully at the outreach offered by the Utah Shakespearean Festival's Education Department and then compares it to the outreach work being done by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. Based on the analysis of the three festivals, assessment benchmarks are identified to aid the Education Department in evaluating …
Sexuality, Rights And Personhood: Tensions In A Transnational World, Dina M. Siddiqi
Sexuality, Rights And Personhood: Tensions In A Transnational World, Dina M. Siddiqi
Publications and Research
Background This article discusses what happens when normative ‘global’ discourses of rights and individuated sexual identity confront the messiness of ‘local’ realities. It considers the tensions that emerge when the relationship between sexual and social identities is not obvious and the implications of such tensions for public health and sexual rights activism. These questions are addressed through debates over the naming of male-to-male sexualities and desires in the context of globalization and the growth of a large NGO (non-governmental organization) sector in urban Bangladesh. Methods The material in the paper draws on a research project undertaken in 2008-9 in Dhaka, …

Childhood Family Factors That Influenced The Enrollment Of College Students With Learning Disabilities, Abigail Kirk
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to use qualitative measures to investigate the childhood family factors that influenced the enrollment of college students with learning disabilities. Six participants were interviewed, all of whom were registered through the University Accessibility Center at a four-year university and were served at some point during their school years for a learning disability. Interviews were held in a confidential location and lasted approximately thirty minutes. The interview protocol was constructed in a way that allowed participants to reflect on their experiences and tell their story in their own manner. Planned prompts were included to solicit …
Barcelona's Public Market System: Bridging The Gap Between The Global And The Local, Larissa Hernandez
Barcelona's Public Market System: Bridging The Gap Between The Global And The Local, Larissa Hernandez
Master's Theses
The unique public markets of Barcelona are poised for a thriving future based on their theoretical and empirical grounding and commitment to both global influences as well as the local traditions of trade and consumption. This global/local balance keeps the markets relevant to contemporary consumers and allows them to have a well-rounded experience as they shop. In this paper, I trace the history and previous incarnations of public markets through the Greeks, Romans and Arabs, as well as consider the European situation and its fluctuations over the centuries. I then uncover the debate surrounding globalization, its influence on the food …
The Impact Of Immigration Policies & Integration Programs On Multicultural Identity In Germany, Laila Bernice Schneidergossens
The Impact Of Immigration Policies & Integration Programs On Multicultural Identity In Germany, Laila Bernice Schneidergossens
Master's Theses
Discussed against the background of current political developments and attitudes in Germany, the following research examines what roles immigration policies and locally implemented integration programs play in the development of immigrant identity in Germany. Further, this thesis illustrates how these policies and programs can effectively lead to a new conscious understanding of multiculturalism. Germany has created a society where the cultures of immigrants and autochthonous Germans do not intersect, thus creating separate entities that exist in a parallel reality. Immigrants face the dilemma of maintaining their ethnic sense of identity while simultaneously adapting to the cultural and political norms in …
Latino/A Lgbtq Migrations, Sarah V. Rodriguez
Latino/A Lgbtq Migrations, Sarah V. Rodriguez
Master's Theses
Despite Latin America’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) movement’s recent ground-breaking political achievements, wide spread social acceptance of LGBTQ individuals is not evident in every institution, nor in every part of the region. For some, migration to the U.S. is the solution for escaping the strict social constructs of the region. Of the many studies focusing on the LGBTQ individuals, limited research examines the Latino/a segment of the LGBTQ population. The study explores the motivations behind migration as well as the resettlement process of those immigrating to the San Francisco Bay Area from Latin America, focusing on the …
Divergent Discourses: Development Knowledge And Malian Family Planning, Savannah A. Thompson
Divergent Discourses: Development Knowledge And Malian Family Planning, Savannah A. Thompson
Master's Theses
I propose that in order to approach corrective recommendations for family planning initiatives an examination of initiative fitness is necessary. Using a Foucauldian approach, this analysis identifies the discursive formations (ideologies) at work in centralized family planning in order to elucidate the female normative model for whom initiative programs are constructed. This norm is contrasted with the lived experiences of Malian women in order to determine if the ideology dictating family planning structures is suitable for the local population. When combined with existing analyses of family planning structures and outcomes, this research helps triangulate family planning in a three-dimensional space, …

A Career Development Program For At-Risk Youth Created For Writerz Blok, Anjanette Maraya-Ramey, Nicole Miller-Coleman, Kathy Myrers, Sharon Van Bruggen
Program Design and Evaluation
Research indicates at-risk youth (ages 15-24) in Southeast San Diego are likely to be unemployed or underemployed, and lack the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue meaningful living-wage (or better) employment. A review of the literature and primary data collection is presented and suggests an individualized career development program, supported by family members, community mentors and peers, would improve the opportunity for these youth to secure meaningful living-wage (or better) employment. The researchers propose the implementation of such a program, utilizing a quasi-experimental study design to determine program effectiveness. Program objectives, work plan, assessment, social marketing, program evaluation, and proposed …
Systems At Play: The Construction Of International Systems In Social Impact Games, Jorge Albor
Systems At Play: The Construction Of International Systems In Social Impact Games, Jorge Albor
Master's Theses
This thesis explores how game makers conceive of and navigate the intersection between digital systems and real world systems by asking, how can social impact game designers shape procedural rhetoric to effectively address complex real world systems with digital systems? By examining three game case studies, I reach four significant findings regarding player agency, subversive play, design approaches to scale, and game difficulty in regards to systems fluency.
