Comparison Of Proposed K Sample Tests With Dietz's Test For Nondecreasing Ordered Alternatives For Bivariate Exponential Data, Jyothsnadevi Pothana Jan 2011

Comparison Of Proposed K Sample Tests With Dietz's Test For Nondecreasing Ordered Alternatives For Bivariate Exponential Data, Jyothsnadevi Pothana

Statistics

Comparison of powers is essential to determine the best test that can be used for data under certain specific conditions. Likewise, several nonparametric methods have been developed for testing the ordered alternatives. The Jonckheere-Terpstra (JT) test and the Modified Jonckheere-Terpstra (MJT) test are for testing nondecreasing ordered alternatives for univariate data. The Dietz test is for testing nondecreasing alternatives based on bivariate data. This paper compares various tests when testing for nondecreasing alternatives specifically when the underlying distributions are bivariate exponential. The JT test and the MJT test are applied to univariate data which is derived by reducing bivariate data …

“Which Is The Wisest Course?”: Political Power And Prophetic Agency In Nineteenth-Century Mormon Rhetoric, Richard Benjamin Crosby Jan 2011

“Which Is The Wisest Course?”: Political Power And Prophetic Agency In Nineteenth-Century Mormon Rhetoric, Richard Benjamin Crosby

This article enters the conversation about religion and communication at the crossing of two important but under-traveled paths: prophetic rhetoric and Mormonism. Mormon polygamy has a rich and controversial history that includes a series of public arguments and internal debates over how to navigate the historically radical religion through the political landscape of nineteenth-century mainstream America. Wilford Woodruff, president and prophet of the church when the government compelled the Mormons to stop the practice of polygamy, needed to end “plural marriage” without undermining the vitality of the church’s revelatory claims. I argue that Woodruff’s response breaks the limited rules of …

Elicited Imitation For Prediction Of Opi Test Scores, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Kevin Michael Brooks Cook, Jeremiah Lane Mcghee Jan 2011

Elicited Imitation For Prediction Of Opi Test Scores, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Kevin Michael Brooks Cook, Jeremiah Lane Mcghee

Automated testing of spoken language is the subject of much current research. Elicited Imitation (EI), or sentence repetition, is well suited for automated scoring, but does not directly test a broad range of speech communication skills. An Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tests a broad range of skills, but is not as well suited for automated scoring. Some have suggested that EI can be used as a predictor of more general speech communication abilities. We examine EI for this purpose. A fully automated EI test is used to predict OPI scores. Experiments show strong correlation between predicted and actual OPI scores. …

Coal Swelling Model For High Heating Rate Pyrolysis Applications, Randy C. Shurtz, Kolbein K. Kolste, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2011

Coal Swelling Model For High Heating Rate Pyrolysis Applications, Randy C. Shurtz, Kolbein K. Kolste, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Thermal swelling of coal during pyrolysis strongly influences combustion and gasification rates. Coal swelling is known to vary strongly with coal rank, heating rate, and total pressure. New experiments confirm and clarify previous observations that maximum swelling occurs for high-rank bituminous coals at heating rates slightly below 104 K/s. Advanced swelling models based on bubble physics yield good qualitative trends at low heating rates, but they fail to predict observed decreases in coal swelling as particle heating rates increase beyond 104 K/s. An empirical swelling correlation for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications that correctly describes experimentally observed trends …

The Development Of Psychometrically Equivalent Cantonese Speech Audiometry Materials, Shawn L. Nissen, Richard W. Harris, Ron W. Channell, Brooke Conklin, Misty Kim, Lena Wong Jan 2011

Objective: The aim of this study was to develop and psychometrically evaluate speech audiometry materials that can be used to measure word recognition (WR) and speech recognition testing (SRT) in quiet for native speakers of Cantonese. Study Sample: Commonly used bisyllabic and trisyllabic Cantonese words were digitally recorded by native male and female talkers and then evaluated by twenty normal-hearing Cantonese listeners. Design: The recorded bisyllabic words were psychometrically evaluated and arranged into four WR lists and eight half-lists that are relatively homogeneous in audibility. Using logistic regression, SRT materials were developed by selecting 28 trisyllabic words with relatively steep …

States must collect and report post-school outcomes of youth with disabilities as defined in the SPP/APR Indicator #14, specifically: “Percent of youth who are no longer in secondary school, had IEPs in effect at the time they left school, and were: A. Enrolled in higher education within one year of leaving high school. B. Enrolled in higher education or competitively employed within one year of leaving high school. C. Enrolled in higher education or in some other postsecondary education or training program; or competitively employed or in some other employment within one year of leaving high school.” (20 U.S.C. 1416(a)(3)(B))

The Use Of Asynchronous Video Communication To Improve Instructor Immediacy And Social Presence In A Blended Learning Environment, Jered Borup, Charles R. Graham, Andrea Velasquez Jan 2011

The Use Of Asynchronous Video Communication To Improve Instructor Immediacy And Social Presence In A Blended Learning Environment, Jered Borup, Charles R. Graham, Andrea Velasquez

Faculty Publications

Instructors in a blended learning format struggle to find an effective balance between face-to-face instruction that is high in fidelity and online instruction that is high in flexibility. This chapter presents three cases where asynchronous video communication was used to help offer students instruction high in fidelity and flexibility. Although the medium for sharing asynchronous video varied between the three cases, findings indicate that video was a useful tool to improve instructor immediacy and/or social presence with a minimum amount of face-to-face instruction. The instructors in all three cases saw asynchronous video communications as an effective way to communicate with …
