An Online Project & Portfolio Management Application: Implementing Project Selction And Prioritization Model To Reolve Priority Conflicts And To Build Strong Linkages Between Projects And The Strategic Plan, Rohit Gupta Jan 2011

An Online Project & Portfolio Management Application: Implementing Project Selction And Prioritization Model To Reolve Priority Conflicts And To Build Strong Linkages Between Projects And The Strategic Plan, Rohit Gupta

Theses

This Capstone Project will address two important problems. The first problem concerns resolving priority conflicts over the projects among the managers in an organization and the second problem concerns the gap between the projects and the organizational strategies. To complete this project, I have developed an online project and portfolio management application by using the software development life cycle methodology and project management methodology. The outcome of this project is a software product that helps in obtaining a general consensus as to which project has the highest priority. This priority awareness helps in resolving conflicts among the managers. This product …

Military Entrepreneurs: Patterns In Latin America, Kristina Mani Jan 2011

Military Entrepreneurs: Patterns In Latin America, Kristina Mani

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Despite the recent shift to democratic regimes and market-based economies, in many Latin American countries the military retains important economic roles as owner, manager, and stakeholder in economic enterprises. Such military entrepreneurship poses a challenge to the development of democratic civil-military relations and, by extension, to the development of liberal democracy in the region. While scholars have noted this situation with concern, they have given little attention to distinguishing the different types of military entrepreneurship, which reflect distinct historical patterns and implications. This article identifies two major types of military entrepreneurs in Latin America: industrializers, determined to build national defense …

Death's Laughter (Novel) And Crafting A Novel (Exegesis), Fémi A. Adédínà Jan 2011

Death's Laughter (Novel) And Crafting A Novel (Exegesis), Fémi A. Adédínà

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis consists of a creative component, a novel, Death’s laughter and an exegetical essay, Crafting a novel. The novel centres on a true Nigerian story: a Pentecostal pastor, who died in a plane crash, was a government official found out to have amassed large sums of money and assets that were far greater than could be accrued from his modest salary. In addition, he was accused of bigamy because he had two wives who did not know each other in two different cities within the country. This basic story serves as the nucleus of the novel. The novel tells …

You Don't Know What You Don't Know: Investigating The Information Needs Of Clients Of Web Based Public Sector Information Services, Julie Ann Johnson Jan 2011

You Don't Know What You Don't Know: Investigating The Information Needs Of Clients Of Web Based Public Sector Information Services, Julie Ann Johnson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research grew from two frustrations. The first was the personal frustration experienced when attempting to find information on websites; especially government websites. Often the sites were loaded down with all sorts of information such as corporate organisation charts and press releases but lacked the information which would allow clients to interact effectively with the agency or meet their information needs and move on. The second frustration was that of Edith Cowan University students who battled with a diverse, overlapping and incomplete set of both online and paper based resources as they sought to make decisions about their selections of …

An Investigation Into The Feasibility Of Using Digital Representations Of Students’ Work For Authentic And Reliable Performance Assessment In Applied Information Technology, David G. Miller Jan 2011

An Investigation Into The Feasibility Of Using Digital Representations Of Students’ Work For Authentic And Reliable Performance Assessment In Applied Information Technology, David G. Miller

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The assessment of student performance in areas such as drama, physical education, art and Information Technology (IT), does not lend itself to traditional, paper-based testing methods. In these domains, much emphasis is placed on the acquisition and demonstration of practical skills and these may be difficult, if not impossible, to measure by scores on theoretical, written assessments. Alternative forms of assessment, which are both valid and reliable, need to be devised for the practical aspects of these subject areas. The capture, in digital form, of students’ work, may allow the development of authentic forms of summative, high-stakes assessment with high …

Parental And Carer Responses To Angelman Syndrome And Prader-Willi Syndrome, Allyson K. Thomson Jan 2011

Parental And Carer Responses To Angelman Syndrome And Prader-Willi Syndrome, Allyson K. Thomson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The research project undertaken as part of this thesis was designed to assess family stress levels and the use of coping strategies among the carers of people with an intellectual disability caused by Angelman syndrome (AS) or Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Both syndromes are genomic imprinting disorders that arise from disruptions in genes located within human chromosome 15q11-q13. Although the disease phenotypes are quite distinct, the genetic mechanisms involved are common to both syndromes but involve paternally-derived mutations in PWS as opposed to maternal mutations in AS. Previous investigations in Western Australia (WA) indicated that people with AS and PWS experience …

An Investigation Into Internetworking Education, Woratat Makasiranondh Jan 2011

An Investigation Into Internetworking Education, Woratat Makasiranondh

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Computer network technology and the Internet grew rapidly in recent years. Their growth created a large demand from industry for the development of IT and internetworking professionals. These professionals need to be equipped with both technical hands-on skills and non-technical or soft skills. In order to supply new professionals to the industry, educational institutions need to address these skills training in their curricula. Technical hands-on skills in internetworking education can be emphasised through the practical use of equipment in classrooms. The provision of the networking equipment to the internetworking students is a challenge. Particularly, university students in developing countries may …

Teacher Understandings Of Responsibilities For Reading Instruction In Stage One And Two English Courses Of Study In Western Australian Schools, Liana Strutt

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of the study was to explore secondary teachers’ understandings of their responsibilities towards students who demonstrate poor literacy skills with regard to the Reading Outcome in the Western Australian English Courses of Study. As an experienced secondary English teacher, the researcher was aware that the reading demands of senior secondary classrooms were challenging for some students and that many teachers were unsure of how they should respond to the needs of the students. Since the education reforms which began in Western Australia in the late 1990s and the subsequent introduction of Courses of Study in 2006, a great …

Cancer analysis from different perspectives is necessary to provide the information for health research and the initiation of prevention and treatment programs. The purpose of this study was to analyse five top cancers in the Perth metropolitan area, including lung, melanoma, breast, prostate and colorectal cancers, using two methodologies: Area-to-Point Poisson (ATP) kriging and fitting an inhomogeneous Poisson process model using the Berman-Turner algorithm. ATP Poisson kriging was used to undertake the analysis on the spatial distribution of cancer rates per 100,000 person-years for Perth Statistical Local Areas during the period …

The Characterisation Of Pax3 Expressant Cells In Adult Peripheral Nerve, Judith A. Blake Jan 2011

The Characterisation Of Pax3 Expressant Cells In Adult Peripheral Nerve, Judith A. Blake

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Pax3 has numerous integral functions in embryonic tissue morphogenesis while knowledge of its complex function in cells of adult tissue continues to unfold. Across a variety of adult tissue lineages, the role of Pax3 is principally linked to maintenance of the tissue’s resident stem and progenitor cell population. In adult peripheral nerves, Pax3 is reported to be expressed in nonmyelinating Schwann cells, however, little is known about the purpose of this expression. Based on the evidence of its role in other adult tissue stem and progenitor cell maintenance, it was hypothesised that the cells in adult peripheral nerve that express …

Orthodontic-Prosthetic Implant Anchorage In A Partially Edentulous Patient, Jenny Zwei-Chieng Chang, Pi-Huei Liu, Ya-Ting Wang, Yi-Jane Chen, Chung-Chen Jane Yao, Eddie Hsiang-Hua Lai Jan 2011

Orthodontic-Prosthetic Implant Anchorage In A Partially Edentulous Patient, Jenny Zwei-Chieng Chang, Pi-Huei Liu, Ya-Ting Wang, Yi-Jane Chen, Chung-Chen Jane Yao, Eddie Hsiang-Hua Lai

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Three-dimensional planning of a dental-implant site is critical when implants are to initially be used as orthodontic anchorage for tooth movement and to later serve as prosthetic abutments. The combined orthodontic and prosthetic implant restorative treatment of an adult patient with multiple missing teeth, an upper midline deviation, and malocclusion is described in this article. Plastic model bases combined with customized position plates allowed the precise transfer of the proposed implant position from the diagnostic arrangement to the original cast to avoid compromising subsequent orthodontic tooth movement.

Using Growth Rate Of Reading Fluency To Predict Performance On Statewide Achievement Tests, Rachelle Whittaker Hinkle Jan 2011

Using Growth Rate Of Reading Fluency To Predict Performance On Statewide Achievement Tests, Rachelle Whittaker Hinkle

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Federal legislation has prescribed the increased use of statewide achievement tests as the culmination of a student's knowledge and ability at the end of a grade level; however, schools need to be able to predict those who are at-risk of performing poorly on these high-stakes tests. Three studies served to identify a means of predicting statewide achievement test scores in either third or eighth grade based on CBM reading scores and rates of improvement at first, second, and third grades or third, fourth, and fifth grades using readily available statistical procedures. One-half of the third-grade data was used in Study …

A Study Of A Management Supported Single Minute Exchange Of Die (Smed) Program For The Flexible Packaging Industry, Jared Unterborn

Theses

The principle objective of this study was to quantify the effectiveness of a management supported process improvement program versus a non-management supported program. The test took two plants with the same machine and a similar job mix were chosen to implement a common process improvement program in the exact same way with the only difference being that one of the plants would have strong involvement from the management team. The data that was used to quantify this theory was an employee survey and data collection. The data showed Plant A's management supported program resulted in a 25% lower changeover time …

Low Power Digital Design Using Asynchronous Logic, Sathish Vimalraj Antony Jayasekar Jan 2011

Low Power Digital Design Using Asynchronous Logic, Sathish Vimalraj Antony Jayasekar

Master's Theses

This thesis summarizes research undertaken at San José State University between January 2009 and May 2011, which introduces a new method of achieving low power by reducing the dependency of the clock signal in the design. A clock signal consumes power even when the circuit is idle, but asynchronous circuits by default move into the idle state and involve no transition in the circuit during that state. In addition, in an active system, only the subsystem that is in use dissipates power. This work mainly focused on obtaining low power by implementing asynchronous logic. The work also studied the measure …

Evaluating Trademark Design, Katherine L. Spencer Jan 2011

Evaluating Trademark Design, Katherine L. Spencer

Master's Theses

Trademarks serve as visual representations of a company's name, product, or values. This research sought to determine the effect of the application of human factors principles and graphic design principles on trademark design. A computerized questionnaire was employed to investigate the emotional impact, comprehension, and recall of trademarks based on their type (typographic elements or graphic elements), their subject-content compatibility, and their adherence to human factors and graphic design principles. Trademark type had a significant effect on comprehension of trademarks but no significant effect on emotional impact or recall. Trademarks with high subject-content compatibility and trademarks that use visual metaphor …

Avant Garde In Chinese Art, Curtis Carter Jan 2011

Avant Garde In Chinese Art, Curtis Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

The question that I propose to examine here is to what extent or in what sense there has been an avant-garde presence in Chinese art. And in what sense is the avant-garde present in contemporary Chinese art connected to avant-garde in the west. Before examining the relevance of the avant-garde to developments in Chinese art, it is necessary to provide a brief account of avant-garde in western art.

Protecting Information Privacy, Charles D. Raab, Benjamin J. Goold

All Faculty Publications

This report for the Equality and Human Rights Commission (the Commission) examines the threats to information privacy that have emerged in recent years, focusing on the activities of the state. It argues that current privacy laws and regulation do not adequately uphold human rights, and that fundamental reform is required. It identifies two principal areas of concern: the state’s handling of personal data, and the use of surveillance by public bodies. The central finding of this report is that the existing approach to the protection of information privacy in the UK is fundamentally flawed, and that there is a pressing …

The largely statutory appearance of U.S. administrative law be surprising in light of the existence of the federal A Procedure Act of 1946 (APA).1 The APA, including its a amendments, is a relatively comprehensive guide to much of law in the United States. It contains the procedures agencies to follow in both rulemaking and adjudication and provisions on the availability and scope of judicial review of agency action. As includes open meeting and open file requirements as well as negotiated rulemaking and legislative review of agency rules generally held view that federal courts should not make com should act only …

Rebel Without A Clause: The Irrelevance Of Article Vi To Constitutional Supremecy, Gary S. Lawson Jan 2011

Rebel Without A Clause: The Irrelevance Of Article Vi To Constitutional Supremecy, Gary S. Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

With Stare Decisis and Constitutional Text, 1 Jonathan Mitchell has produced what I think is the most interesting and creative textual defense2 (or at least partial defense) to date of the use of horizontal precedent in federal constitutional cases.3 Mitchell’s careful analysis of the Supremacy Clause is fascinating and instructive, and he does an impeccable job of drawing out the implications of his premise that the Supremacy Clause prescribes only a very limited choice-of-law rule—a rule that does not, by its own terms, specifically elevate the Constitution above federal statutes and treaties. His innovative and intriguing framework yields four distinct …
